"So, how's it going with Alicia?"
Fabien hesitated for a moment. "Well, I'd say we're quite ready to take it to the next level.”
Owodog grinned as he glanced sideways at his best friend. "What do you mean by 'next level’?”
Fabien laughed as he emptied his glass and called for another glass of beer. "What do you think I mean?”
-----------------------------------------------------------
Alicia’s brows were knitted as she worked on a sweater for Fabien.
"You’re really serious this time, eh?”
"You bet. Very soon, he’s gonna be mine and mine alone only. All mine." She told Sarah in an overly sweet voice.
Sarah shuddered. "Al you’re giving me goose bumps! It might work on him, but not me!”
Alicia giggled.
She was the kind of girl who attracted attention everywhere she went. Slim and equipped with a body every other girl would die for, she aced her studies and had a well-paid job. And she had a boyfriend who was handsome, sweet and had a healthy paycheck. In short, her life was perfect.
-----------------------------------------------------------
A few months ago, Fabien was the newly promoted Creative Manager who was seen as a frivolous playboy with the amazing touch in advertising. Girls wanted him but were afraid of him. Guys wanted to be like him but were respectful of him.
He had known Owodog since they were little kids of just three years old. And the friendship had evolved into their undying brotherhood now. Both of them kept no secrets from each other; but even if they did, the other would see through him and find out anyway.
As close as the both of them might be, they still had rather different interests and tastes. The only similarity they had was probably women—Owodog was no less a playboy than Fabien. But that, no doubt, only strengthened their bonds.
Owodog was the more serious of the two, though. Fabien had been more academically inclined, so he didn’t spend much of an effort to pass his exams. Owodog was the lazier one, because he only had passion for solving crimes.
From young, whenever anyone lost an eraser or a pen, Owodog was the one who found the thief. And once when Fabien was accused of cheating in a major examination in high school, Owodog spent almost a week investigating right after class everyday. And his efforts paid off when he tracked down the person who made changes to Fabien’s exam script.
That was when he decided to be a full-time detective, which was what he was now. He was a homicide detective with the police force and just the previous year, he and his partner were commended for solving the most homicide cases.
Owodog was now a work-before-love person. The only indulges he had were the regular drinking sessions with Fabien.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Owodog felt his cell phone vibrate. He pulled it out. "Zhuang Hao Quan.”
"Quan, we’re needed at the station. I’ll wait for you at the junction.”
Owodog looked at his watch. "Okay I’ll be there in five.”
"Yeap." And the line was cut.
Owodog looked at Fabien.
Fabien just waved him off. "See ya, bud.”
"Yup! Bye!" Owodog said as he gave his friend a pat on the back.
As he left the darkness of the pub, Owodog walked hastily and pulled out his car keys. He jammed the key into ignition and drove off before even putting on his seatbelt as he got into his car. He stepped on acceleration, to ensure that he’d get to his partner’s place in five minutes to pick her up.
He passed a junction, and braked.
A girl got into his car. She consulted her watch. "You’re half a minute late, Mr Zhuang. Now, hurry up.”
"Yeah. Give me the lowdown.”
"Yeap! Okay, first a body was found in an apartment on Hill Lane about one and a half hours ago—”
"Shit and they took so long to tell us?”
"—by the victim’s boyfriend. And Chad estimates she should have been dead for over 12 hours already. Five stab wounds in the stomach but not much blood loss. And a wound in her neck caused by strangulation. So, the victim had already been dead before being stabbed. The state of the apartment is pretty okay. The only things damaged, were pictures of her and her boyfriend. So it’s definitely personal. The boyfriend’s being questioned at the station now. Chad is performing the autopsy now. I think we can pay him a visit later.”
Owodog nodded.
They reached the station in another five minutes and hurried in.
The boyfriend was sobbing as he told a junior detective, Ben, the things he knew and saw.
Then Owodog caught sight of Landon and waved him over. He shut the three of them in his office and asked Landon about the situation.
"Well, basically I think Ash has already told you everything that we know so far. So now we’re just waiting for Chad’s autopsy report. Anyway the apartment’s locked up. If you need to make a trip down just tell me.”
"Yeah okay. Thanks Lan. Okay, Ash, let’s go find Chad.”
They nodded and walked off in their respective directions.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Fabien yawned as his alarm rang the next morning. He wearily hit the snooze button. Then a shrill ringing sound jolted him out of bed. Irritated, he picked up the phone.
"Rise and shine!”
Fabien took a moment to register that voice. "Alicia?”
"Yeah well, I just wanted to tell you that I miss you! And see you later at work!”
Fabien arched his brows in amusement. "Just that? Yeah okay see you. Bye." Then he hung up and fell right back into bed.
-----------------------------------------------------------
As usual, Fabien reached his office in the Sugar Factory right on time. There was a box on his table, looking nice and pretty with a brown satin ribbon. It came with a card. He put down his suitcase, sat down and untied the ribbon.
Then he opened the box to reveal a grey-coloured knitted sweater. Fabien grinned as he flipped the card to read what was written on it.
'To my sweet Yu. Candy love from your sugar Al~’
Fabien raised a brow. He wasn’t really used to such sweet cards. But whatever, he liked the way it sounded.
Putting the lid back, Fabien pushed the box to the corner of his table, and set about to doing work.
-----------------------------------------------------------
At the Research & Development (R&D) department, Sarah was at Alicia’s desk, prying gossip from her.
"So, tell me, how did he react when you gave him the sweater? Was he happy? Did he hug you? Did he kiss you?”
Alicia made a face at Sarah. "I don’t know~ Seriously. I just left it on his desk." She sighed, "I hope he likes it.”
It was Sarah’s turn to make a face at her. "You mean you just left it on his desk?! I thought you went to his office so you could give it to him personally! Al, you sure don’t know how to make use of your chances.”
Alicia sulked. "Okay, it’s too late for regrets now. I really hope he likes it. That’ll be the best reaction I can get.”
Sarah stared at Alicia in disbelief. "You’re so easily contented! Oh man.”
"I’m not like you, Sarah. I prefer to let my guy be in control.”
Sarah shrugged nonchalantly.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Owodog knocked on the door. "Chad?”
"Yup, come on in! Grab two masks as you do, and two pairs of gloves too, if you need.”
Owodog slid the door open and handed Ashley a mask and gloves as he put them on for himself. Ashley shut the door behind them.
"So what’ve you got?”
Chad shook his head. "Nothing much. The killer obviously had everything planned out properly, including the victim’s reactions. Look." Chad picked up a limp hand to show Owodog and Ashley the fingernails. "Clean, without a trace of any skin. I already tried looking but there’s really nothing in there. Obviously the killer made sure that she won’t come in any contact with him or her." Chad put down the hand and pointed to the neck. "Those marks are caused by a rope. There’re some bits left in the flesh where the rope cut into her neck. But the rope is easily found in supermarkets and D.I.Y stores. Not much of a help.”
"The stab wounds?” Ashley asked.
"By a fork, it was stuck right through her. The killer purposely left it deep inside with the last stab. But yeah, like I have already told you last night, she was already dead when she was stabbed so there wasn’t much blood loss.”
Owodog looked at Ashley. "Jealous lover, you think?" He asked, remembering the broken photo-frames.
Before Ashley had time to reply, Chad butted in.
"Oh, I think there’s one more thing you need to know.”
"What?”
"There’s a lollipop stuffed down her throat.”
