“Lollipop?” Owodog and Ashley echoed.
Chad nodded. “It’s the round chupa-chups kind. Strawberries and cream. The plastic wrapping had been peeled off but the only DNA I took off the lollipop and the stick is that of the victim’s.”
“Strawberries and cream…” Ashley thought aloud. “Oh yeah, Chad, do you think you can find out where the lollipop is from or made?”
Chad said “Yeah” without the least bit of hesitation.
“Great, then call us when you have anything. Come on, Quan, let’s go.”
Owodog thanked Chad and followed Ashley out.
-----------------------------------------------------------
“So what do you think of the lollipop thing?” Owodog asked as they drove towards the Hill Lane apartment.
“I think it’s probably a whole jealousy thing.” Ashley stated.
Owodog pondered for a while as he unwrapped a lollipop and stuck it into his mouth.
"Hey, can you stop doing that? It’s dangerous.” Ashley said, referring to his taking both of his hands off the steering wheel. “Besides, why are you still eating a lollipop? Doesn’t that case freak you out?”
Owodog shrugged. “Do you want one?”
Ashley stuck her hand out and Owodog grabbed a stick from his pocket and threw it to her.
“Why do you want one? Doesn’t that case freak you out?”
“That’s my line. Anyway. That boyfriend, Dennis Yong, he’s clear right?”
“Seems to be, for the moment. He’s got a pretty strong alibi. But I think we need to bring him in again, see if he can give us any more on the lollipop thing.”
In another few minutes they reached Hill Lane.
The elevator took them to the 12th floor and both of them ducked under the police tape and went through the doorway.
“Hey Lan.” Owodog waved to his fellow detective. Ashley merely nodded to acknowledge his presence.
Landon and another junior detective, Ben, were standing in the middle of the living room, right beside the sofa where the corpse of Eleanor Chan was found.
“Teaching him stuff again?” Owodog asked casually as he and Ashley scouted around the apartment for more evidence that the forensics and other detectives might have left out the previous night.
“Yeah,” Landon sighed. “Well, I guess we’ll get going since both of you are here. See you guys later at the station.”
Then Landon and Ben were gone.
Ashley opened the drawers and rummaged through piles of photographs. Nothing unusual there.
Owodog plowed through the endless kitchen cabinets, hoping to find a trace of where the fork or lollipop might have come from.
-----------------------------------------------------------
By the time they returned to the station, Dennis Yong was already waiting in an interrogation room for them. Needless to say, they returned empty-handed.
“I don’t think there’s much more we can pry from him.” Owodog said.
“Well, you never know.” Ashley pushed the door open and both of them entered.
Dennis Yong was sitting slumped in the chair, head down.
Outside, Landon and Ben were watching the CCTV that showed them what was happening in the interrogation room.
“Hi Mr Yong, I’m Detective Zhuang Hao Quan and this is my partner Detective Ashley Wu. We hope you can cooperate with us on a few more things we need to clarify.”
The guy nodded, “Yeah sure.” His voice was weak; apparently he hadn’t recovered from the loss of his girlfriend yet.
“Was Eleanor your only girlfriend?”
“Right then, yeah she was.”
“And before her, how many other girlfriends did you have?” Ashley asked. Owodog just listened. He knew where Ashley was going, but he wasn’t sure if that would help. Ashley was dead bent on her ‘jealous lover’ theory. Owodog hadn’t made up his mind yet.
“Four…”
“Can you give us their names?”
“Yeah of course.” Then he wrote their full names on a piece of paper Owodog passed to him.
Owodog picked up the piece of paper. “Are you sure this is all?”
“Yes... Oh, no. Wait, there was another girl before Eleanor but I didn’t know anything about her except that her name was Heather.”
Ashley and Owodog exchanged glances. Maybe something good was going to come out of this interrogation after all.
“Tell us more about her.”
“Okay. I met her in a pub around a year ago. It’s the Grenadine Glasses pub at Redford Road.” Dennis Yong recounted. “I was with her for only two months. Then I met Eleanor.”
“Do you know any background information about her?”
Dennis Yong thought for a while, then slowly shook his head. “No… She didn’t even let me take photos with her. And she didn’t tell me anything except her name ‘Heather’. We mostly arrange our meetings at Grenadine Glasses. I didn’t even have her number, but she has mine.”
Owodog raised his brows. “So, she’s just a casual sex partner.”
Dennis Yong shifted in his seat uncomfortably, mumbling, “Yes.”
“Then what happened after two months?”
“I told her we shouldn’t meet again because at that time I got to know Eleanor.”
“Did she take it nicely?”
“No, she flared up, and shouted at me, saying I only used her for sex. But that’s what she was using me for too. Then after that she just stood up and left.”
“Left where?”
“Grenadine Glasses. After that I never saw her again. I never stepped into Grenadine Glasses ever since.”
-----------------------------------------------------------
Ashley was about to say something when her cell rang. “Hello~ Detective Ashley Wu speaking.”
“Hey it’s Chad.”
“Chad?” Owodog heard Ashley say and looked intently at her.
“Yeah. The lollipop? It’s from the Sugar Factory. Matt had all the lollipop-producing factories send samples of their lollipops to us.”
“The Sugar Factory, eh? Okay thanks a lot, Chad. We’ll get back to you. Bye.”
“Okay. Bye.” Chad hung up.
“The Sugar Factory…” Owodog wondered aloud.
“It’s probably going to be a dead link. The Sugar Factory has seven stores. There’s no way we can spot the killer even if she waves the Strawberries & Cream lollipop in front of us in their CCTV footage.”
“Yeah. Let’s just leave it first. We’ll think about this after we make a trip to Grenadine Glasses. Anyway, stop assuming it’s a she.”
-----------------------------------------------------------
Alicia was waiting at the lobby of the Sugar Factory for Fabien to finish his work.
Sarah was irritating her again with her constant nagging about how Fabien should be the one waiting instead and not her, and about how Fabien should put her in the first place in front of work.
“Okay, okay! Sarah, you’ve said that a million times!”
“So why aren’t you listening?”
Alicia grimaced. “I like doing this, okay? I’ve been telling you since high school. Now, you get your butt out there, and go and find a guy to play with.” She smiled sweetly at Sarah.
“Whatever.” She said and strutted away haughtily.
After half an hour, Fabien was finally done. But he hadn’t expected to see Alicia waiting there for him.
“Al? What are you still doing here?” He said, looking briefly at his watch.
“Waiting for you, of course.”
Fabien smiled and kissed her on the cheek, then he gave her his free hand and she held it as they walked to the car park for Fabien to get his car.
-----------------------------------------------------------
“Heather? No, never heard of her.”
Owodog flashed a picture of Dennis Yong at the bartender. “How about this guy? Do you remember seeing him before?”
The bartender shook his head.
“How long have you been working here?” Ashley butted in.
“Hmm… Around eight months or so. Why?”
Ashley frowned at Owodog, who appeared sheepish. Then she turned to the bartender, “Thanks. Anyway,” Ashley showed him her badge. “I’m Detective Ashley Wu. We’re working on a case and we’d like to talk to your boss.”
The bartender looked slightly taken aback for a moment then he spoke in his monotonous voice again, “Okay, please wait here for a moment, I’ll tell him he has guests.”
Ashley nodded. Then she turned to Owodog. “Very clever of you to ask that guy without even knowing how long he’s been working here.”
“Sorry. Oh, here he comes.”
“Hello, I’m Terry Li, boss of Grenadine Glasses. What can I do for the both of you?”
Both of them flashed their badges. “Detective Zhuang Hao Quan.”
“Detective Ashley Wu.”
“We’d like to have a talk with you regarding a murder case. We think there might be some clues we can get from here.”
Terry Li looked a lot more shocked than his bartender had. “Okay, sure, let’s take a seat in my office.”
-----------------------------------------------------------
Ashley’s cell rang in the midst of their conversation. She excused herself and left the room to pick up.
“Detective Ash—”
“Ashley, we need you and Owodog here right now.”
“What happened?” Ashley’s brows were furrowed.
“Dennis Yong is dead.”
“WHAT?”
