(Three months later)
Eleanor Chan and Dennis Yong had been dead for three months, but Owodog and Ashley weren’t making any headway on the case. Either the killer was really damn smart, or they had missed out something important. But they had already covered every single clue they could find and all of them were dead ends. And the killer hadn’t struck again since. Owodog and Ashley were starting to feel frustrated with themselves but they had already exhausted every last lead they had. In short, it was really quite impossible to find the killer now, even more so because three months had passed. Any remaining evidence would have been rid of by then.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Owodog guzzled down his seventh glass of beer and called for another one. That was when he felt a pat on his back. His head whirred to the right. “Yu?”
Fabien sat down on the high stool beside Owodog. “Let me guess. You haven’t been able to find the killer yet.”
“Duh. What else?”
Fabien shrugged. “Who knows? The last time you looked like this, you just fell out of love.”
Owodog squinted and thought about it for a while. “That was five years ago.”
“Yeah! I’m glad you know that. It’s high time you got yourself another girl. A serious one.”
“You mean other than hook-ups in the pub,” Owodog downed another glass. “Well, there aren’t many people I meet that I can have a ‘serious’ relationship with. In fact, the only girl I ever see and can consider is Ashley.” Owodog waved his hand at the bartender. “One more, please!”
“Ashley? You keep mentioning her. But the thing is, how come you never ever introduced her to me when you’ve been working with her for like, what, more than two years already?”
The bartender slid a full glass topped with a whole layer of froth to Owodog, who took it gratefully. “She’s only my partner. Why do you need to know her anyway?” He said in a raspy drawl.
“Because… I broke up with Alicia.” Fabien said, as a matter of fact, drinking a mouthful of beer.
Owodog snorted. “I knew it’d come sooner or later. You just can’t get used to the idea of monogamy, can you?”
Fabien grinned and put an arm around his best friend’s shoulder. “Yeah, yeah. You know me best, alright? But three months is really one of my best records.”
“Yeah I know that.” Owodog deadpanned. “So how did she take it? It seemed like she really liked—or loved—you a lot.”
“Went insane. Threw a hissy fit. Hurled all kinds of vulgarities at me. Said I only wanted to be with her for sex. Et cetera, et cetera…”
Owodog’s ears pricked up at Fabien’s last sentence. “Sheesh, that sounds familiar,” he ignored Fabien’s constant queries of “What sounds familiar?” as he mulled over that thought. Finally, Dennis Yong came to mind. “Ah!”
“Seriously, Zhuang Hao Quan, WHAT?” Fabien demanded.
“Oh, sorry, I was just thinking about the murder case. Apparently this guy said his ex-girlfriend said the same thing.”
“So? All of them say the same thing.” Fabien pointed out.
Owodog scratched his head. “Oh yeah, that’s quite true. UGHHH. This is driving me crazy!”
“YEAH. That’s why I said you need to find a real girlfriend. Hell, just go find yourself a wife for good.”
Owodog made a face at Fabien.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Alicia was stuffing herself with ice cream. She was staring blankly at the television which was blaring. It had been almost a week since they broke up. And she still couldn’t accept it nor understand why.
She had finished six tubs of strawberry ripple ice cream in the past week already. Every day she went to work like a robot programmed to, and every night after work she went straight home, sat herself in front of the television (that she wasn’t watching) and ate ice cream.
She didn’t even speak to Sarah even though Sarah kept bugging her. To put it simply, she was living in her own isolated world where nothing else mattered or existed. Perhaps Fabien still did.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Owodog decided to ask Ashley out for a drink after Fabien left the pub. Needless to say, he just hooked up with another woman.
Ashley was in the vicinity, so she reached the entered the car park the same time Fabien’s car left it. She parked her black and flame colored Honda Shadow Sabre in an empty lot nearest to the building and walked to Wolf’s Tooth.
She walked straight to the counter and saw Owodog there. “Hey bud.”
Owodog turned. “Hi Ash! Didn’t expect you to be here so fast,” He looked at his watch with an unbelieving expression. “Seven minutes. Wow. Anyway,” he patted the empty seat next to him. “Come on, sit down.”
Ashley nodded. “So, what’s up?”
“Nothing much, just asked you out for a drink.”
“Okay.” Then she waved to the bartender. “Can I have a beer please?”
The bartender nodded and then passed her a glass topped with lots of froth like Owodog’s had been.
“Thanks.” Ashley smiled sweetly at the waiter.
That was when she realized Owodog was staring at her. No, observing her was more like it.
“What?”
Owodog snapped out of his trance. “Oh, nothing.” But it seemed like what Fabien said was getting to him already.
Ashley narrowed her eyes at him. “You seem strange today.”
“DO I?”
“WHOA. Relax!” Ashley was rather shocked by his sudden explosiveness.
“Oops.” Owodog mumbled. “Sorry.”
“Well, anyway, SEE. That further proves my point!”
Owodog sighed. “I was just thinking…”
“Okay, was that supposed to be a sentence, or the starting of a sentence?”
Owodog made a face at Ashley. “Stop being witty today, okay? I called you out to chill, not to poke fun at me.”
Ashley grinned. “Ha, okay, you relax. But I think we’ll be doing this for a long time ‘cause I don’t think we’ll make any significant findings in the near future.”
Owodog sighed again. “Unless the killer strikes again.”
Ashley nodded.
Owodog fished around in his pocket and dug out two lollipops. He handed one to Ashley. “Come on, finish your drink and let’s go for a game of pool.”
“You’re on!” Ashley gulped the remainder of her beer and took the lollipop from Owodog. “What flavor is this?”
“Orange!” Owodog answered, plopping his into his mouth.
“Great.”
-----------------------------------------------------------
Fabien blinked as his eyes grew accustomed to the dark surroundings. Without disturbing the woman next to him, he slid out of bed and pulled on his jeans and shirt. He checked his wallet, cell and made sure all his stuff were intact, then he headed silently out of the room. The illuminated clock in the room read 0230h before he left. The woman was still sound asleep.
He checked his reflection as he descended the hotel building in a lift. He looked alright except for his slightly bloodshot eyes. Then he went to the counter and paid the four hundred bucks for the hotel room and left the place in his black Mazda MX-5.
-----------------------------------------------------------
The next two days were long, boring days for Ashley and Owodog again. But the third day, they finally had work to do.
Owodog was sleeping when his cell rang. Peeking at his clock, which read 0601h, he picked up the call reluctantly.
“Owodog, head down to Wolf’s Tooth pub now. It’s at—”
“Yeah I know where it is.” Owodog cut the officer off impatiently.
“A worker just found a dead woman in the alley.”
“Yeah got it.” Owodog hung up.
Then he quickly dialed Ashley’s number.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Owodog and Ashley stood over the half-naked corpse. Chad was bending down over it, probing different parts of the body with his gloved hands.
Ashley grimaced. “I don’t think I’m coming to Wolf’s Tooth again.”
Owodog shrugged.
Then Chad waved to get their attention. “Guys, guess what? The lollipop killer has struck again!”
“Great.” Owodog mumbled. Ashley wasn’t sure he meant it to be sarcastic or he really thought it was good. “Okay, Chad, give us the report ASAP. Come on, Ash, we have some detective work to do.”
Ashley nodded. “Thanks Chad. See you.”
Then both of them made their way purposefully to the station, where the worker who found the corpse had been brought in for questioning.
