In the next two days, two more victims of the lollipop killer had been found. The method the lollipop killer used was still the same as the previous one found at Wolf’s Tooth. But the two latest bodies were found in a car park and outside the 25Days pub.
The only difference was that for the third victim, the killer spent some time writing the word ‘die’ with the girl’s blood on the floor beside her body.
And that was the girl that Ashley found oddly familiar, like she’d seen her somewhere before, but can’t recall exactly where and when.
“Amy Sim, Joanna Lee and Fiona Chan. What do they have in common?” Owodog thought aloud, looking at the profiles of the three women killed in the last three days. Their pictures were arranged in rows on his table and Ashley was sitting opposite him.
Ashley was still studying the picture of Fiona Chan. Where had she seen her before?
Suddenly Owodog sighed. “If this goes on, we might as well quit the force. Five people dead and we are nowhere near solving the mystery.”
Ashley nodded slowly.
“God, we really need to find substantial leads. FAST. Or I won’t have face to call myself a detective anymore.”
-----------------------------------------------------------
Fabien tapped his fingers impatiently on the bar counter. Owodog was late. And he was getting nervous. The past two days the presents he received had become increasingly strange. He needed to tell Owodog and see what he had to say.
Innocent sweets and chocolates had turned into vile blood messages and voodoo dolls.
Ashley and Owodog entered through the double doors just as Fabien finished his fifth glass.
Owodog was making a beeline for the counter as he knew Fabien would be already there. But before Owodog could reach Fabien, he heard Ashley gasp.
He spun round. “What is it?”
Ashley pointed to Fabien with one slender finger. “Fiona Chan.”
“HUH?” Owodog blurted out, with a comical expression on his face. Then he said, “Okay, what do you mean by that?”
“That guy, Fiona Chan. I saw them leaving Wolf’s Tooth together two days ago when I came here to meet you.”
Owodog’s eyes bulged for a moment and Ashley thought he looked like a bulldog. Bulbous eyes.
“What?” Ashley demanded, impatient with his shock taking too long to recover.
Owodog didn’t answer. He walked to Fabien and sat down beside him.
“Hey Quan you’re finally here!” Fabien said, sounding relieved.
It was Ashley’s turn to gape. She walked over to where Owodog and Fabien were, and stood next to Owodog. “He’s Fabien?”
Fabien looked at Ashley with interest.
Ashley’s eyes were narrowed.
Owodog nodded. “Yeap,” he said to Ashley then turned to Fabien, “And may I introduce to you, Ashley.”
Fabien shot her a beguiling smile and stuck his hand out. “Hi, nice to meet you.”
Ashley took his hand distrustfully and nodded.
Owodog glanced at Fabien and hissed, “No attempting to toy around with my partner.”
Fabien laughed. “Okay, whatever you say, Mr Detective.” He snuck a look at Ashley, who had sat herself down on the stool next to Owodog and was waiting for her drink. Then he said in a voice barely above a whisper, “There’s something I need to tell you.”
“What?”
Fabien signaled to Owodog to go closer to him. Then he told Owodog all about the strange presents so softly Owodog was sure no one else would be able to hear.
Ashley was watching them with a queer expression. “Do you need to be so secretive?” She muttered as she downed a glass of beer and called for another one.
When they finished sharing secrets, Owodog straightaway turned to Ashley with a serious face. Ashley shot him a puzzled look. Then Owodog dug out a few photographs from his pocket and showed them to Fabien. Ashley watched on because she knew Owodog already knew something that might be crucial to their case.
Fabien had a slight smirk on his face as he recognized the person on the topmost photograph. Then his eyes moved on to the next picture… And the next... Then his expression changed. He looked Owodog in the eye. “Why are you holding their pictures? What’s wrong?”
Owodog stuffed them back in his pocket and returned the look. “They’re dead.”
“Dead…? Oh my fucking God. You’re kidding me right.”
“I’m not, you dumbo. And I have every reason to detain you for questioning.”
Fabien blinked at Owodog. “Are you saying… You suspect me?”
Owodog shook his head. “I don’t. But they all happen to have a connection with you. I’ll be flouting quite a few police rules but never mind, let’s go someplace quieter to talk about this.”
-----------------------------------------------------------
Ashley got into Owodog’s car’s passenger seat. A minute later, the car was driven off at a high speed. The trip was made in silence.
They reached the building where Fabien’s apartment was located and parked the car in a random empty slot.
Ashley was lost in thought as they ascended the building in the elevator.
Fabien dug out his own house keys and unlocked the gate and the main door. Then he invited Ashley in. After they both entered, Fabien shut the door and locked it. Owodog would take a while to arrive.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Owodog felt somewhat self-conscious in Fabien’s shirt and pants. His haircut was so similar to Fabien’s that in the dark it was hard to recognize him, plus he had on Fabien’s signature pair of sunglasses that Fabien wore everywhere he went. It was a bit ridiculous to be wearing the sunglasses in the pub, but he couldn’t give himself away.
Hoping that he really resembled Fabien, Owodog consulted his watch once more and decided that it was time for him to leave. He tried keeping a low profile as he made his way to the car park and towards Fabien’s car.
Once inside the car, Owodog felt a lot less conspicuous and he glanced at the rearview mirror. He should have made it. Then, quickly, he started the car and drove off, checking the rearview mirror time to time to check if there was anyone following him. Owodog was very sure there was, but he couldn’t see anyone. He hoped that the lollipop killer wasn’t clever enough to see through their identity-swapping trick.
-----------------------------------------------------------
“So… You’re Ashley, eh? I’ve heard a lot about you from Ao Quan.” Fabien said, getting her a can of beer from the fridge.
Ashley was sitting on the sofa, staring into space.
Fabien sat beside her on the sofa and handed her the beer.
Ashley took it. “Thanks.”
“To be truthful, I didn’t expect you to be so pretty. Quan must have been overjoyed when he got you as his partner.”
Ashley ignored his comment.
Fabien continued talking, “Geez, he’s really lucky. What wouldn’t I give to have such a partner…”
Ashley grimaced. “You know,” She stared him in the eye, “It’d be better if you just shut up while we wait for Quan to come. Plus, it doesn’t help that everything you’ve said is cheesy like hell.”
Fabien raised his brows in amusement. “Hey… Relax. As much as I want to have you in bed… Quan gave me special instructions that I am not allowed to touch you.”
Ashley narrowed her eyes at him. “Thanks a lot, but the idea of dying as the price to pay is not exactly appealing to me.”
“Shit, do you always speak like that? No wonder Quan said you were a smart-ass.” Fabien inched closer to her. “But that’s hot.”
Ashley was starting to feel quite nettled by Fabien. “Mr Fabien Yang, suspects and detectives aren’t a very good match. So will you move your butt away from me and think of better pick-up lines? I don’t understand how you can even manage to do one woman almost every two days with lines like that.”
Fabien shrugged. “I don’t need lines.”
Ashley rolled her eyes. ‘Whatever. Will you just shut up and give me some peace while we wait for Quan?”
“No.” He said, and he hadn’t moved a millimeter from where he was sitting yet.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Alicia’s eyes widened as she spotted Fabien’s MX-5 entering the car park. She was rather relieved when she saw that Fabien was alone today. She looked at the pink box tied up in a neat white ribbon in the passenger seat next to her and half wanted to leave the car and run to Fabien. But she thought against it, and after she saw Fabien disappear into the lift, she waited until she saw the lights come on in Fabien’s apartment before leaving. It was a fruitless night.
