Ashley awoke to the noise of a motorbike racing past. She blinked a couple of times then realized she was in Owodog’s car, which was parked in the car park below her apartment. She looked at Owodog. He was lying rather straight on the seat and he was fast asleep. Ashley glanced at the clock. It was 8.57AM. She shrugged off the jacket covering her then tapped Owodog gently on the shoulder.
“Quan~ Ao Quan~ Wake up.” Ashley said.
Owodog hit her hand away and groaned, “Go away.”
Ashley chuckled. Owodog looked so adorable when he was pouting. She studied his features as she’d never done before. He’s got single eyelids, a very sharp nose and rather thin lips in addition to his big ears, she noticed. She smiled to herself without realizing, then she nudged him with her elbow in another attempt to wake him up.
“Aieee.” He hissed as he continued to sleep.
“God, you’re damn hard to wake.” Ashley mumbled as she started poking him. “Owodog! Zhuang Hao Quan! Wake up! We need to get to work you blockhead!”
“Shut up!”
Ashley was beginning to get pissed off. She had one more trick up her sleeve though. “Shut up, eh?” She said in a challenging tone. Then she pulled his left ear and twisted it real hard.
“AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!”
It got Owodog howling in agony, but it sure woke him up.
“ASHLEY WUUU! OWWWWWWWWWWWWW!”
“You can shut up. Now hurry, we’ll head up to my place first and freshen up before going to work.” Ashley commanded.
“Now I know why you said my big ears were cute last time.” Owodog started sulking; it was something Ashley seldom saw.
She curbed her laughter but smiled sweetly at him instead. “Mr Zhuang, hurry and get your butt out of this car.”
Owodog was still fuming as he followed her up.
Ashley reckoned his foul mood might linger the whole day and sort of regretted doing that to him.

Fabien woke up feeling like he had just been working out for ten hours non-stop. His bones were all aching from sleeping in a strange posture the previous night. He stretched a bit and pulled his tee over his head and chucked it in the washer as he walked towards the bathroom.
He bent over the basin, both hands holding on to each side of the basin. Then he looked into the mirror. His dark eye-rings were starting to emerge.
Outside, his alarm started to ring but he was lazy to go all the way to his bedroom to switch it off. He let it ring; perhaps the shrill ringing would really wake him up. Fabien punched the wall in frustration as he studied his reflection.
Who would be his next victim; who would in turn become Alicia’s victim? Why was Alicia doing all these? When would Owodog find enough evidence to put her behind bars? And, why couldn’t he stop thinking of Ashley?
-----------------------------------------------------------
Owodog splashed water onto his face. He glanced at the things in the bathroom. Ashley might seem like a boyish woman, but everything in her bathroom spelled Female with a capital F. In fact, Owodog was quite overwhelmed by the scent in the bathroom. Ashley’s scent.
Ashley stuffed her previous night’s clothes into the washer. Yawning, she pulled her tee straight and smoothed out the creases. She was just leaving the kitchen when she heard the bathroom door open and Owodog call her name.
“Yeah?” She replied as she came out of the kitchen.
Owodog closed in on her like a wolf cornering his prey.
“What?” Ashley asked, avoiding his avid gaze.
“Dammit, Ash. Two years I’ve worked with you so closely yet I’ve never realized that you’re so beautiful.”
“Er.” Ashley laughed nervously (and rather unconvincingly). “That’s because I’m not.”
By then, Owodog already had her trapped in between his arms and the wall right beside the kitchen door.
Ashley squirmed edgily and tried to escape from his clutch, but her efforts were in vain.
“Ao Quan, what’re you doing? Let me go…” Ashley said in a composed manner. Her face was turned to the side as Owodog’s nose nuzzled her face. His body was pressed against hers, and she put her hands onto Owodog’s chest and made an effort to push him away. But he was obviously much stronger. “Quan…”
“Hell, Ashley, will you just shut up for a moment?” Owodog hissed, with a low growling sound rising in his throat.
“No I won’t.” Ashley rebutted indignantly; though her heart was already thumping in her ear. Owodog was right then a very hungry dog looking to mate.
“Fine.” He said as his right hand moved up to tilt her head towards his.
Ashley wasn’t fighting back anymore.
He closed his lips on hers.
She let him dictate her movements but slowly her hands reached around him till they were firmly planted on his lower back.
Owodog’s right hand was pressed on the back of her head, minimizing the distance between their faces. His other hand was on the small of her back, pushing her to him.
Ashley tugged on Owodog’s shirt from the back. Somewhere in front a few buttons popped. But the kissing didn’t stop. It only grew more intense. She tugged more forcefully, wanting to get his shirt off. Until she suddenly became aware of something hard prodding her stomach.
She opened her eyes immediately on the realization and pushed Owodog away. This time she succeeded.
Owodog pulled her towards him again, craving for more. But she put her hand between his face and hers.
“Ash, what’re you doing?” Owodog said, his voice low and raspy. It was clear he wanted and needed to finish what they just started.
“Quan, look. I can’t do this now, okay?”
Owodog nodded slowly, with a pained expression.
Ashley glanced at his jeans, which was then tight around his crotch area.
“Dammit, Ashley, stop looking. Ugh.” Owodog said, wondering if he should feel embarrassed or angry. Then he bolted to the bathroom.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Fabien’s left eyelid jumped just as he was locking up his apartment. Instinctively, he spun round and scanned the surroundings for suspicious objects or movement. There was none. He quickly secured the lock on the gate and headed to the lift landing.
He felt much safer once he was in his car, then he sped to work.
He caught sight of a lollipop on his dashboard. He froze as he tried to focus on driving. Then he stretched out one hand and took the lollipop. There was a small post-it note attached to it.
‘Gotcha! –Quan’ it read.
Fabien heaved a sigh of relief. It was Owodog’s handwriting all right. He had to have left it there when he was driving his car last night. Fabien knew Owodog had a habit of bringing lollipops around to eat when he was on cases. But he still couldn’t shake of the feeling of fear that was rising in him.
Thank God for him, though, the lollipop was orange-flavoured.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Ashley knocked on the bathroom door. “Er… Quan?”
“What is it?” He replied in a strained voice.
Ashley felt the temperature in her cheeks rise. She cleared her throat and said, “Uh, I popped a few buttons on your shirt just now. I think you can wear my brother’s for the time being.”
“Yeap. Leave it on the doorknob. I’ll take it myself.”
“Okay.” Ashley answered and retreated away from the bathroom as far as she could. She ended up sitting on her couch. She had changed into another pair of pants and t-shirt.
She exhaled in a long, soft sigh and spaced out.

They picked up burgers from a drive-through and ate as Owodog drove them both to the station. The trip was largely made in silence though, with both of them still feeling awkward about what had happened.
They were grateful when Owodog’s car turned into the station’s car park and stopped in an empty slot.
Ashley picked up the empty wrappers and threw them into a rubbish bin as she passed one while Owodog made his way purposefully towards Chad’s office with the ziplock bags in his hands. Ashley fell in line beside him and they walked in more silence.
“Chad!” Owodog said as he entered Chad’s office, “We have work for you!” Then he held out the ziplock bags for Chad to see.
Chad took the bags from Owodog. “What’re these?”
“We reckon it could contain the killer’s prints. Do us a favour and give us the results ASAP, yeah?” Ashley said in a no-nonsense way.
Chad nodded. “Sure. I’ll contact you guys.”
“Thanks Chad.” Ashley smiled at him.
Owodog shifted uncomfortably.
“What’s with you, Ao Quan?” Chad asked, noticing Owodog’s discomfort.
Owodog shook his head. “Nothing. Er, we’ll come back when you have the results.” Then without waiting for Chad’s reaction or Ashley, he quickly left the office.
Ashley gave a sheepish grin at Chad before leaving his office and a very confused Chad behind.
