Owodog and Fabien stopped their staring war, but because Owodog didn’t want the previous day’s happening to repeat itself again, he suggested that they just sleep over at Fabien’s place.
“Fine with me.” Fabien shrugged.
Ashley glowered at Owodog. “You know, this is a VERY BAD arrangement because I’m stuck in the same house as a DOG and a… wolf. UGH! I’m taking the guest room.” She announced and fled into it with her bag.
“It’s all your fault.” Fabien scowled.
Owodog gaped at him. “MY fault? When is it my fault?”
“Yeah it has always—”
“SHUT UP!” Ashley shouted from the room. “We have loads of work to do tomorrow!”
-----------------------------------------------------------
And so they had. Ashley’s cell rang at the ungodly hour of 5AM. She had barely slept three hours. “Hello. Detective Ashley Wu speaking.”
“Ashley? It’s Landon. Someone just called to say they heard violent screaming and strange sounds coming from a Messings Road apartment, level four, unit number zero-eight.”
“Uh-huh. Okay why is it our case then?” Ashley said, scratching her head as she sat up in bed.
“The caller saw a lollipop on the floor outside the apartment, and blood stains too.”
“Lollipop, eh? Okay, Ao Quan and I will be right there…” She hung up the phone.
Ashley wearily got out of bed and switched on the lights. She checked her reflection in the small mirror stuck on the wall before opening the door.
“Quan?” She called as she wandered around Fabien’s bachelor pad. She realized she had no idea where Owodog was. She walked all the way to the living room and saw a figure on the couch. Thinking it was Owodog, she stood beside the couch and hit the guy’s chest.
“Huh?” The guy said as he sat up in shock.
That was when Ashley realized it wasn’t Owodog, but Fabien. “Oops sorry! I thought you were Quan. I should have switched on the lights first.” She apologized sheepishly. “Er, where’s Quan?”
Fabien pointed towards his own bedroom. “He took over my room,” He drawled.
“Okay thanks.” Ashley said.
Fabien looked at the illuminated clock. “God, it’s only five.” Realizing Ashley was already leaving to wake Owodog, he stretched out his hand and grabbed hers.
The sudden grip made Ashley lose her balance for a moment but she managed to regain it as she was back at the same spot where she stood just then.
“Erm, Ashley,” Fabien started.
Shit, not again, Ashley thought. “Er, Fabien, me and Quan have to rush to a scene of crime. I don’t have time for unimportant things.” She stated.
“Uh… Alright then. Uh… Wait! Before you wake Quan, uh. Can you, uh, call me ‘Xiaoyu’ next time?”
Ashley didn’t know if she should bash Fabien up for wasting her time or ruffle his hair like a little boy for being so shy and adorable. Eventually she just said, “Okay, will do.” Then she pulled her hand free of Fabien’s grip and went to wake Owodog.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Owodog was definitely in a bad mood that day. He detested having to wake up so freaking early. Plus he and Fabien were still fighting with each other. It only added to his vexation.
“Oh, look. The guys are there already.” Ashley remarked upon seeing an unmarked police car and a marked one.
Owodog didn’t say anything.
They quickly got out of the car and rushed straight to level four.
“Lan!” Ashley called.
Landon spun round. “There’s a dead guy found inside.”
“Shit.” Ashley swore. Then she thanked Landon and dragged a stoning Owodog into the apartment.
Chad was bent over the body. He saw Ashley and Owodog coming to stand beside him and he said, “It’s your lollipop killer again, guys.”
“How did he die?” Ashley asked.
“Excessive blood loss. He was stabbed by a high-heel shoe but didn’t die immediately. The killer also attempted to choke him with a lollipop though he managed to spit it out. And he wrote this.” Chad pointed to a note that was now contained in a ziplock bag.
Owodog and Ashley followed the direction of his finger.
“ ‘Heather. Sugar Factory’.” Ashley read after scrutinizing the scrawly and faint handwriting for almost a minute.. Then she looked at Owodog. “Dennis Yong, Grenadine Glasses, remember? Heather?”
“Could she be Alicia?” Owodog wondered aloud, his brows furrowed.
“Why would she keep calling herself ‘Heather’? Why wouldn’t she change names?”
“Sugar Factory.” Owodog suddenly said.
-----------------------------------------------------------
“Heather? No, haven’t heard of any Heather’s before.” Fabien shook his head.
“Are you really, really sure?” Owodog asked. He had called Fabien out for lunch to see if Fabien could help provide any leads to their lollipop killer case.
Fabien still replied no.
“Then is there any way you can get us a list of all the Sugar Factory employees?”
“I think so. I’ll ask Terry. I’ve helped him quite a few times before, I suppose he’ll do me this favour.”
“Okay, thanks a lot bud.”
“So what do I get in return?” Fabien said, his eyes gleaming.
Owodog made a face at him. “Your pathetic existence on this Earth.”
“Fuck you.”
-----------------------------------------------------------
Ashley hung around at Chad’s office as she waited for Owodog to return. Chad had examined the bloody heel-prints, which were very unique, and concluded that they came from a size five heel from Toby’s. He pointed to the distinctive T symbol that was part of the print. But there wasn’t anything he could determine from the print.
Next was the dirt and hairs found on the heel. Apparently the killer wasn’t clever enough to keep her work and personal matters apart. She wore the heels to work, assuming she worked in Sugar Factory. Because there were sugar particles and some colouring particles wedged in the heel’s grooves, which in turn got stuck in the victim, Elliot Lai’s body.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Owodog was finally back and Ashley quickly filled him in on what Chad had found out so far. Owodog listened intently and when Ashley was done he told her that Fabien agreed to help them look for Heather in the list of employees.
Ashley reckoned the woman, assuming it was a woman, should be rather petite to be wearing size five. So the profile of any Heather should match their estimations.
Owodog tapped his fingers on the table. There was one more file on Owodog’s desk now. It belonged to the profile of Elliot Lai.
Eleanor Chan, Dennis Yong, Amy Sim, Joanna Lee, Fiona Chan and Elliot Lai. Just what did they have in common that caused them to become the lollipop killer’s victims?
Ashley’s cell rang and broke their thoughts.
“Xiaoyu? Yeah?” She didn’t realize that the name had subconsciously lodged itself into her brain and she had unknowingly said it without even a moment’s hesitation. It did, however, catch Owodog’s attention.
“ ‘Xiaoyu’? When did she start calling him that?” He muttered to himself.
“Yeap. Sure thing. Yeap, see you later. Bye.” Ashley said into her cell then she shut it and turned to Owodog. “Xiaoyu says there aren’t any Heathers in the employee list. He’s faxing it to us though. He says there’re almost 50 pages. And, he says he wants to meet us for dinner.”
“Okay.” Owodog nodded, thinking why Fabien called Ashley instead of him. Ashley was about to leave Owodog’s office when he called her back.
“Yeah?”
“What do you reckon are the odds of me winning?”
“Ao Quan. Aiee.” Ashley groused and exited his office.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Alicia had already more than five shopping bags in hand when she finally reached Toby’s at the end of the street. A shopping spree wasn’t a shopping spree without Toby’s.
“Hello!” The shopkeeper greeted cheerily upon Alicia’s entrance.
She smiled heartily back and the shopkeeper instantly recognized her.
“On a shopping spree again, Miss Liew?”
Alicia nodded. “Are there any new arrivals?”
“Yes, in fact there are. The stock just came in last night. Mr Toby’s newest design to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Toby’s.” The shopkeeper led Alicia to a shelf situated near the entrance of the shop.
Alicia took one look at the heels and decided on the crystal-encrusted baby blue strappys. “I’ll take that one.”
“You’re in luck, Miss Liew. The crystal-encrusted heels only come in size five’s.”
-----------------------------------------------------------
She admired the gleaming crystals on her new purchase. In two days, just two more days, she would wear them while she ended everything once and for all.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Fabien had specially chosen a restaurant on the far side of town. He hoped no one was following him.
Owodog grumbled a bit at the location but was otherwise cool about it.
They chose a booth at the most secluded corner of the place and kept their voices low as they spoke.
“Do you think there’s anyone following me?” Fabien asked.
None of them knew what to answer. The killer could be anywhere. But they only knew the three of them were definitely clear, including Fabien.
