“What are you doing here?” He asked her as she sat down, exhausted, in one of the chairs in the back.
“I’m moving here,” Chun Hei said, putting her hands on her knees and looking at him. “I was wondering if you could help me out while I got on my feet.”
Kong Dae looked at her, trying to find the words to tell her the truth, “Sweetie, you know that I would love to, but your auntie and I are having another baby in a few months, and we’ve already got two kids. The café really doesn’t bring in that much money. I can’t hire anyone else without firing the help I already have. This was a really bad time for you to come. You should have called ahead.”
She looked at her uncle in shock. She thought for sure that there wouldn’t have been any problem. “Oh,” she replied simply, unsure of how else to respond.
“You can stay with us for a week, but we can’t afford any longer than that,” he said, putting his arm around her in comfort.
“Okay,” she said with nod, worried that she would have to go crying to her parents for money. Her parents had never accepted her decision to move, but Chun Hei had saved up the money on her own working over the summer to pay for her ticket. She had a little money left, but not enough to support herself for any extended period of time. She would have to get a job soon.
Her uncle led her out into the café, where he had her sit at the counter and gave her a cup of coffee and a small sandwich. She put her chin in her hands, placing her elbow on the counter. She ate silently for a few minutes until the young man working for her uncle came over, “I’m Ko Sang Ki,” he said, drying his hands with a towel and smiling.
“Yong Chun Hei,” she replied with a polite smile, still thinking hard about her situation.
“You’re related to the boss?” he asked her, nodding to Kang Dae.
“He’s my uncle. I’m visiting from America,” she told him, picking off pieces of her sandwich and putting them in her mouth. “Do you know where I should go to look for a job?”
“There are a lot of places,” Sang Ki began, but he was quickly interrupted by the gentleman that was sitting at the table behind them.
“You’re looking for a job?” The man asked, turning in his seat.
“Yeah,” Chun Hei replied, facing him as well. He was wearing a black suit, with a blue undershirt and white silk tie. He still had thick hair, though it was grey with a few streaks of white.
“Why don’t you come by my office, we can talk about you working for my company. I think I have something you could do,” the man said. He stood up, revealing that he was done with his food and coffee. “My name is Park Jinsang,” he handed her a little white card. “Come by tomorrow at two and we’ll talk.” Mr. Park left the café with Chun Hei and Sang Ki staring at him in shock from the counter.
Chun Hei flipped the little card over in her hand. At the top in bold English letters were the words, “SM Entertainment.” The rest of the writing was in Korean, and gave his name and contact information. “What happened?” Kang Dae asked, coming from the back and finding the two still in shock.
“Mr. Park just offered Chun Hei a job,” Sang Ki said pointing to the card. Kang Dae was speechless.
