Chapter 11

Enrique's Song.

Ariel looked up to see Hebe approaching her, arms stretched out, ready for a delicate hug, and air kisses. She sighed and stretched out her arms in welcome. She had decided as she bathed, dressed, and combed, that she would move around in the party circuit a bit more. She could meet interesting guys here, and begin her dating life! She had dated just one guy, Mike He, and then he turned his attentions to Hebe, and her to Joe.

Ariel knew in her heart that Mike and her would never work out, her feelings were developing for Joe, and there was no room for Mike in her heart. Instead of hurting him, she steered him towards Hebe, who was more than happy for gaining the attention.

She repaid her debt to Ariel by inviting her to all the parties she’d hosted, or been invited to. Or by introducing hordes of guys to Ariel, and trying to set her up on a date.

“Ariel!” Hebe exclaimed as she dropped an air kiss on either cheek. Though Hebe was fake in the party scenes, she was a really sorted girl in reality. She had to act as a good socialite for her image. Ariel wondered if she ever got bored of raising her voice to a shriek every time she saw someone she wanted to talk to, but she guessed it just came naturally to her now. Hebe was never fake to Ariel.

“Hebe.” Ariel said lightly. She turned her eyes to where Hebe was a moment ago, and her eyes met the most handsome pair she’d ever laid eyes on. Granted Joe’s eyes were killer, but this particular pair of eyes had depth, meaning, and a longing, and a certain happiness that she couldn’t understand.

She quickly looked away, but too late, Hebe caught the direction of her eyes. She gave a loud squeaky, “Oh.” Followed by , “I forgot to introduce you two, how rude of me,” and dragged her towards the man holding those incredible pair of eyes.

As she walked over to them, Ariel shifted her gaze to his face. Her eyes widened in surprise. She knew this party was in honour of him. She knew she would meet him here, but she hadn’t known he would actually be here --- in flesh and blood!

She was staring at him, when he raised his eyebrows and she quickly looked away. She hated it when people stared, and yet, she was staring at him now! Well, he was a masterpiece of a man. Everything she loved in a man. Tall, lean, and a beautiful set of eyes. Exactly like Joe.

She gasped at the direction her thoughts were going to, and quickly brought her attention back to the happenings of right now.

“Enrique meet Ariel. Ariel meet Enrique...Huh? Who’s that calling? Excuse me.” Hebe said moving to the other end of the room.

Ariel watched Hebe leave in utter horror. Subtlety was a concept totally lost on Hebe. What would Enrique think? That she had come to this party just so she could be introduced to him? And in this manner?

She quickly turned her eyes to Enrique, and searched his face for...what? Anger? Embarrassment? Frustration? But she saw none of that. Instead, there was a glow in his face, and his smile glued her eyes to his face.

“Um...” Ariel tried to distract herself and looked down at his mouth. Big mistake. She realised his mouth was perfect. Just the right amount of puff. Not too thin, neither too fat.

Just like Joe’s...

‘Whoa there! Stop thinking about Joe. First you have to put out this fire! Enrique must be thinking you’re some big opportunist!’

“Um?” Enrique smiled down at her. “I’m Enrique...Enrique Iglesias. Nice to meet you.”

Ariel introduced herself politely and raised her hand to give a shake, when Enrique pulled her close and kissed her cheeks. Not just an air kiss. But real, lip to cheek kiss. Ariel could feel her cheeks burn and blush in the spots where his lips touched it.

She knew coming here was a mistake. Now Enrique thought she was some cheap floozy that he could use and throw. She was about to open her mouth to say just that when he interrupted her.

“Looking down at you’re blushing cheeks.
I feel my heart scream.
‘Grab her before she leaves, and don’t let her go!’
My heart exclaims.

How do I explain?
She’s a stranger.
I can’t make her stay...
Anymore than I can turn night into day.

It’s a natural thing.
It needs to happen for her,
Like it’s happening for me.
Like watching you is...

Is like a million roses,
Have found their way in my path.
Like a billion kisses
Showered upon me by you.

I can’t wait...
Till I unravel you slowly.
Take every inch of you,
And turn it into gravy.

I want you to only blush upon my name.
I need you to hang on to every word I say.
Listen...
I’m not playing.

This feeling comes from my heart.
It’s genuine.
You don’t believe me?
Oh, what can I do?

Besides stare at you.
Turning the lights on and off,
In my room as I sigh,
Your name aloud.

Every time you pass by me,
I take in your aroma.
Hold it in my breathe,
Till I can no longer breathe.

Do you know what you do to me?
Is it possible to stay oblivious?
My love is so obvious.
You just have to look...

And you’ll know...
Yeah, and you’ll know.
Just have to look.
And you’ll know.”

Ariel stared at him as he sang the last verse of that song. She hadn’t heard it before. Granted, she barely heard his music before, but she was pretty sure this song was new.

She wasn’t a big poet, and didn’t know much poetry. But she knew enough to know the words had to rhyme. She recalled the last few verses of the song and realised, not a single verse rhymed. Or did songs not need to rhyme? Perhaps, poetry and songs were whole different things?

She stood there unsure of what her reaction should be. She was awed by the fact that he sang her a song, and stunned and horrified by the fact that everyone heard it.

The sound of her own thoughts were drowned out by loud cheers and applause. She still didn’t know if they were just clapping because they found the song good, or were they doing it out of respect? She had no idea what to do next, she just stood there with her mouth open slightly, and her eyes bore into his.

“I think we need some privacy?” Enrique asked, but it wasn’t a question. He was already dragging her towards the balcony. He asked the other guests to vacate the tiny balcony, and turned around to face her.

“Ariel...”

“That was...a...interesting song...”

“I’m glad you liked it.” He smirked. She had a funny feeling he was laughing at her at the moment.

And why shouldn’t he? She had made an utter fool of herself within two minutes of being with him. She kept staring at him, her cheeks were turning darker shades of red by the second, and she could feel her knees struggling to support her. She shrugged and gave a little smile. “What did you want to ask me? You got me out to the balcony...”

“Will you marry me?”
