Chapter 12

Giggles.

“Eh?” Ariel asked taken aback. At first she thought it was a joke and was about to laugh, when she saw the serious expression on Enrique’s face. Then she searched his face for some amusement, but nothing came, so she just said, “eh?”

“Will you marry me?” Enrique repeated one more time.

“Um...” As she was about to think of a reply, he turned around, walked back into the room and asked another girl to marry him, and then another, and then another. Then he came back into the balcony, and Ariel looked at him horrified.

“Are you mental?”

“No, I’m just trying to prove something to myself.” He replied, a thoughtful look on his face.

“What? That you’re mental?”

“No.” He grinned. “That I’m not as irresistible as I thought I was.”

Ariel looked into his eyes, finally she could see some amusement. She followed the crinkle of his eye, and started giggling. Then the giggling became more severe, and turned into a fully fledged laugh.

Enrique joined her, and soon they both were clutching their stomach and belting out roars of laughter that had heads turning towards the balcony in alarm.

“We should stop...people are staring.” Ariel squealed in between giggles. She had never laughed so much before. But there was that one time with Joe. Suddenly the laughter from Ariel’s face faded, and she felt her eyes water. She held the tears in, forcing herself to concentrate, and not break out in front of a complete stranger.

“Ok, so let’s go out then?” Enrique asked and again didn’t wait for Ariel to reply. He took her hand and led her to where the coats were lying. He gestured to her to pick up her coat, and Ariel hesitated for a moment.

‘I can’t go with this complete stranger.’ She thought in surprise. ‘I came to this party to enjoy myself, to...to...meet someone.’ She remembered her motive and looked up at him once again. He had a frown on his face, and looked at her with narrowed eyes. She knew he was probably thinking, ‘will she...Won’t she...’ in his mind.

She turned her gaze away from his face, turned around and looked across the room, everyone was busy dancing, or eating, or having a lovely conversation. She met Hebe’s gaze which read, ‘you go girl!’

Ariel gave her a tentative smile, to which Hebe jerked her head towards Enrique and signed ‘best of luck’ with her thumb.

“Oh well!” Ariel exclaimed and turned around. “I don’t normally do this.” She said grabbing her coat. She had come to meet someone, and she had, so why not go ahead with it?

“I can tell.” He gave a false sigh of relief and grabbed her hand. She looked down at his hand on hers and looked back up in confusion. Then she narrowed her eyes in a teasing way and said, “You better keep those to yourselves or the deal is off.”

“Ah, sorry.” He replied and gave her a smile of complete innocence.

Enrique guided her towards his Lamborghini nervously. He was not sure Ariel would like the car. His ex-girlfriend, sure as hell hated it. Was it all women, or some? He met women who say fancy cars and swooned at the sight of them. Some complimented them, and asked him out. Some just looked horrified, like his ex-girlfriend, and asked him to take them home in something safer. Which category did Ariel fall into?

“Aah! What else, a Lamborghini.” Ariel sighed and ran a hand around it’s hood.

“Y-you know what it is?”

“You don’t know what it is?” Ariel asked surprised.

“I...of course I know! I own it.” Enrique chuckled. “I’m asking if you know. Most girls wouldn’t recognise her name.”

“Oh, it’s a ‘her’ is it?” Ariel asks and gives a giggle of her own. “Well, frankly I don’t know much about cars, but I do know that this particular one is called a Lamborghini. It’s been in the news as one of the sleekest cars, and I’m glad you got it in its original colour.”

Enrique’s looked at her for a while and then smiled. “Would you like to take a drive in her?”

“Oh sure. Give me the keys.” Ariel joked.

“I wouldn’t let my baby be driven by anyone but me...unless you’re willing to be my girlfriend.” He smirked and gave another chuckle at the fake look of outrage on Ariel’s face.

“Oh, if I have to pay such a high price, I’d rather buy my own Lamborghini.” Enrique imitated her look of outrage.

“You’d rather buy a car that costs thousands of bucks than go out on a date with me? I’m paying you know.”

“Well then, I didn’t know that...would you pay for the dinner and not show up?” Ariel asked innocently.

Enrique made a gesture with his hand of a broken heart and burst out laughing.

“That would be more convincing if you weren’t laughing so much.” She said laughing so hard, she had to place a hand on his chest for support.

“You make me laugh!” Enrique said grabbing hold of her hand, he pulled her close and leaned in towards her.

Ariel watched him lean towards her helplessly. ‘This is not supposed to happen. This is too quick!’ She thinks but doesn’t stop Enrique. ‘Then somehow, this feels right too.’ She thinks and leans towards him too. Just as she was about to place her mouth on his a horn sounded from behind, and she jumped away from Enrique.

“Get a room! Move on!” The driver shouted in Chinese.

“Get a life you baby!” I yelled back. Enrique looked at me surprised. “You probably want translations?” I asked giving him an awkward smile.

“I want the moment back but, eh...unless you’re willing to kiss me now?” He asked with an expression so helpless, Ariel started giggling again.

“Naah, what I want to do, is ride in this car.” She replied controlling herself.

“Well, this is a first. A woman chooses a car over me, I really am not as irresistible as I thought I was.”

“Well, I’m glad I’m the one to give you a reality check.” Ariel smirked and got into the car, Enrique followed.

He sat in the car and turned on the ignition. Then he pulled the lever and off they went. Enrique and Ariel chatted about many things, and the more they spoke the more nervous Ariel got.

‘I’m not ready for this...’ She thought helplessly. ‘He’s cute, but can I forget Joe? It’s too fast, we’re moving too fast. To think, I might have kissed him, had it not been for that...that ridiculous driver. And I was angry at the time...but Enrique’s funny, why shouldn’t I have a good time? Joe’s probably off with Ella dancing in the beaches or something. Um, wait, they’re in a beach...does Paris have beaches?’

“Ariel...you look lost.” Enrique said pulling the car to a stop.

“Oh?” She looks around and sees a restaurant in the corner of the street.

“I saw that you didn’t eat anything at the party. You might be hungry, right?” Enrique asks following her gaze.

“Oh...” Ariel tries to focus back on reality, and the here and now. “Yeah, I guess I am.” She said and then hears her tummy growl. “I definitely am.” She says trying to hide another giggle. “What is it with you? I haven’t stopped laughing all evening!”

“Well, I’m glad to hear that. Unless it’s in a oh-you’re-so-stupid-I-cant-believe-I’m-with-you way.”

“No, no...it’s in the oh-I’m-having-so-much-fun-way.”

“Aah, well that’s nice to hear.”

“I feel nice saying it too, all content and important.”

“Content I can understand, but important?”

“Well, if it was in a oh-you’re-so-stupid-I-cant-believe-I’m-with-you way, you would have been disappointed, and that means I have the power to disappoint you.”

“Well, this is tough.” Enrique gives a nod of his head in disapproval. “I guess I’m going to pay to give you that power.”

“You will pay...but not for the power, for dinner.” Ariel joked and gave a little giggle.

“Your laugh is really cute.” Enrique smiled at her and again leaned forward to kiss her, but Ariel was quick and walked out of the car, slammed the door, and pulled a tongue at him and ran towards the restaurant.
