“Stupid wall!” She hissed. She stared at the paint buckets and untouched brushes, which she had brought three days ago with anger.
“I cant believe this...third time!” Ariel cried out. She held her face in her palms and gave a huge sigh. “Third time he stands me up!”
It all started with Ariel complaining about her dull wall...
“I hate that dull beige they painted it. I mean, my house is supposed to describe me. All my house says is-BORING! And I...”
“See, it is describing you!” Joe interjected.
Ariel shot him an I-don’t-care-for-that-comment look and continued with her complaints.
“Good housekeeping has been offering to put up my house in their magazine. They said people would like to know how the girl-next-door Ariel lives.”
“Well, that would be a boring article. Remind me not to buy that one when you’re in there.”
“You don’t read good housekeeping. And anyway, that’s not the point!”
“Well, I don’t know what’s the point then. I’ve urged you to change the look of that apartment of yours since you got it. I know back when you were nineteen, you couldn’t afford to make the changes, but now that you are twenty three and hugely successful, why don’t you make a few changes? I keep begging you to do it, and you don’t listen. So I gave up!”
“Well, I came around a bit late, but now I am dedicated to making changes. I promise. Just guide me, ok?”
“What help do you need?”
“Well, I don’t know. I mean I decorated your house, so I don’t need to change anything in the furniture department. I guess, it’s just the paints. They’re this dull beige, and I cant stand it!”
“Hmm, yeah, I remember I chose my own paints. They do look fab don’t they?” Joe grinned.
“Yeah they do.” Ariel rolled her eyes, but made sure Joe didn’t catch the sarcasm in her words. “So will you please help me oh wise one?!”
“Oh, sure why not! Why don’t we meet after I finish my shot? We’ll go together and select the paints.” Joe suggested.
“Sure! This is your solo shot, I can leave now. I’ll head over and pick up my laundry first, then we’ll meet at...MOJO paints?”
“Perfect!”
“You...you will make it right? Please don’t ditch me!”
“I wont I promise.” Joe smiled.
Ariel laughed at her stupidity for believing Joe. Joe didn’t show up that day. Nor the next day, nor the day after that.
The day after each day, Ariel would go and ask Joe why he ditched her and everyday he would say...
“But Arie...the rule...I met a girl!”
“I hate that rule! A promise is a promise. You cant break it! This is the third time Joe! Third time you ditched me! Thanks to this promise, I confidently agreed to the interview with Good Housekeeping! Their expecting an interview next month for the June issue.”
“Arie, baby, I promise I would come and pick the paints today! I promise. How about I finish this shot of mine, and you take yours and then we go together to pick up the paints?”
“Really? No more distractions?”
“No more distractions.”
Ariel agreed to that, and they finally picked up the paints. But they were so tired from work, they decided to paint the apartment the next day. Little did Ariel know, next day wouldn’t come for a long time.
“Argh! Why do I believe him?! Why do I believe him every time? Every time he says he would do it, and every time he lets me down!”
Ariel picked up the phone in anger and dialled with conviction. She would call Joe and give him an earful.
The phone rang, and Ariel’s anger increased with every ring. She waited patiently for five rings and then snorted in impatience.
Typical of Joe to keep her guessing. Whether is was going to pick up the phone or...
“Voicemail! Argh!” Ariel sighed. “Ok...1...2...3...beep! Joe It’s me! I’m waiting in my house with the paints, where are you?”
She hung up the phone. Ok, so this wasn’t exactly a voicemail message which would mirror her anger or her irritation. But she did show him her impatience.
She waited for an hour before she decided it was time to call again. She didn’t want to seem pushy.
“Pushy? Heck he promised me! He promised he would come, and he is two hours late! I have the right to be pushy!”
She redialled Joe’s number. She waited patiently again. Another five rings passed and Ariel was left with the voicemail again.
Ariel hung up the phone in anger. She had already sent him three voicemail messages. That was more than enough.
The gall of the man! He hadn’t replied to any of them!

Joe put his hand on the back of his date-a girl with a punctured tire he met on the way to Arie’s- and leaned in to kiss her.
This one wasn’t so hard to impress, she looked up to see her saviour and gasped audibly. This was enough to convince Joe that she wasn’t going to play hard to get.
Joe sighed. Things were getting too easy. He didn’t have to chase anyone. He didn’t even have to try very hard. Just smile and they swooned for him.
“You’re really sexy in this dress.” Joe teased as he kissed her nape.
“Thank you. If I had known I would meet Joe Cheng today, I would’ve dressed up prettier. Wait till my friends hear this! They’d go wild!”
“Well, if you’re friends are as hot as you, so would I.” She pulled away to have a drink, and Joe took this break to hear his messages. He didn’t understand why his phone was ringing off the hook. But he ignored them all and continued his shenanigans with this new girl.
“Joe, where are you? It’s me. When are you coming?”
Shit! Joe completely forgot! But Ariel would understand. Wouldn’t she?
As he heard the remaining two messages, both from Ariel, he felt more tense. Maybe he should leave for Ariel now.
“Honey, should we move this to my bedroom?”
Well, maybe not right away...

Ariel heard footsteps in her living room at two in the morning. She sat up straight and alert. Maybe it was a burglar! What would she do? She didn’t know Judo, Karate, or any deadly defences.
“Hello? Whoever you are...please don’t hurt me, just take whatever you...”
“Ariel it’s me. And you really need a body guard if you’re going to be so weak!”
“Joe! What are you doing here?” Ariel asked in surprise when she saw Joe. She looked around at the three painted walls, and now at the half finished fourth one. The furniture had been moved and the room had become crowded at the centre due to all the furniture.
“I’m here to paint! Sorry, I couldn’t make it earlier...you know...the rule...” Ariel looked around and smiled. All the anger leaving her. All the words she wanted to say forgotten. She never really could stay angry with Joe. She thought regretfully.
