Ariel quickly turned around and ran to her car. Jiro wasn’t lying. Joe really did it.
Ariel got into her car, but couldn’t find the strength to drive. She decided she would remain there. But what if Joe and his girlfriend came out? What if they saw her? She didn’t want to be seen by them. She didn’t want them to know she was there. Specially, she didn’t want Joe to see her hurt.
“Joe. What is this place? It’s so beautiful.” Ariel exclaimed.
“This is Mr. Da Shu’s Frankie shop. You get all sorts of rolls and Frankies here. They’re stuffed with veggies and sauces and covered with a roll. Or you could also order some with Chicken, they’re delicious.” Joe announced.
“How did you come to know of this place?”
“Well, I am a struggling actor. I remembered walking by this place feeling very hungry, but I only had NT$10. But I was so hungry, I decided I would be content by smelling the food. When I went closer I saw the prices, and was shocked! You get one roll for NT$10.”
“Wow...really?”
“Yes! And they’re delicious.”
“Isn’t it too cheap?”
“Yes, but it’s very popular you know.”
“Ahh! It certainly looks popular.” Ariel teased. She pointed to the empty stall.
“They have bigger crowds at nights.” Joe snapped.
“Ok, ok, you’re all talk and no action! Buy me a veggie Frankie.”
“Sure!” Joe said happily walking over to the stall and ordering two frankies.
He handed one to Ariel and before she could take a bite, he interrupted her.
“Wait! Wait! Wait!” He held her hand for her to stop talking. “You first have to unwrap it little by little. Don’t unwrap the whole thing at once! You should unwrap as you eat!” He announced.
“Ohh, well tell me, Oh wise one. How should I eat this Frankie?”
“Well, you eat one bite at a time, and slowly unwrap, but before you take a bite, take a sniff. It’ll take you to heaven and back you know.”
“Haha! Silly boy.”
Ariel did just that, she took a sniff of the delicious Frankie, and unwrapped it slowly. Then she took a bite, and cursed under her breathe. Joe was right.
“Hmmm! This is delicious.”
“I told you. I say, never doubt the wise skills of the wise Joe, because he really is wise.”
“I challenge you to say that 10 times without any mistakes.”
“I forgot what I just said, see the power of the Frankie?”
“Ah! You’re just chicken.” Ariel teased. Her eyes flew over to a couple sharing one Frankie. She blushed and wished that that could be her and Joe.
“Joe, how many girls do you bring here in one week?” She teased.
“Well, counting you... one!” Joe answered seriously.
“Really?” Ariel was surprised. She didn’t believe Joe.
“Really, truly, honestly.”
“Hmm, why do I think you’re lying?”
“Ariel, not every girl likes this sort of a place. It’s in the open air, in the park, maybe not so healthy, and it isn’t very glamorous either.”
“So, you bought me here, because you thought I was easy?”
“Silly girl. You’re my best friend. I have no intentions of dating you, and besides, you would like such a place. I know you. You would enjoy being here.”
“True.” Ariel beamed. She was really happy Joe had such an opinion of her. He thought of her as an easy going, happy-go-lucky girl.
“Hey, you’re done! Did you like it?”
“Yeah, very much...so...” Ariel didn’t want to let the topic go. She had a doubt in her mind.
“So?”
“Well, if you never bought anyone here, was it because...no one was that special?”
“Yes. No one, except you. My best friend!”
“So, you would only get your best friends here?”
“Well, not exactly. If there is a girl I really, really like. I would test her compatibility with me by bringing her to such a place.”
“Really?”
“Really. And if she likes it, she would become my official girlfriend.” Joe beamed at her.
“Official girlfriend...official girlfriend...official girlfriend.”
The words ran around Ariel’s mind. So Joe likes someone a lot, and he was testing her out. By what she saw of the girl, she was really pretty. Prettier than Ariel. She was tall, and had a voluptuous figure. One that would attract anyone. Joe was no exception.
Ariel’s phone rang. It was Jiro. She pressed the answering button, and plastered the phone to her ear.
“Ariel, am I right? Did he?”
“Yes Jiro...he brought someone to our place.” Ariel could barely hold her tears back.
“Aww, Ariel.” Jiro sighed. “Do you want to come back to my place? We could talk.” Jiro said brightly. “We’d have loads of fun. What say girl?”
“No Jiro. Today I just want to be alone.”
“Ariel...are you sure?”
“I am.” Ariel said and hung up the phone. She put it back in her purse. She looked up and gave a loud gasp!
“I’m parked right behind Joe’s car!” She said to no one in particular.
She quickly put the key to the ignition and drove off.

“Ariel, you’re shot is ready.” The director announced. “Please come over.”
“Yes director.” Ariel sighed.
“Ariel are you okay?” The director asked looking at her face. “If you’re not feeling well, maybe we could postpone the shoot.”
“No director, it’s fine. I’m perfectly alright.”
“Well, good. Today it’s just you. Joe is busy...dating.” The director said the last word with disgust.
Ariel simply smiled and went to give her shot. After all, it’s Joe’s life. She shouldn’t care. She was only his best friend. Maybe, she should stay that way.
“Joe is only my best friend and nothing more.” She sighed.
