Chapter 11

The truth.

“Ariel, why are you so scared? Trust me, no silly mummy would come crashing out to curse you. And if you get cursed…I will pray to the Gods till you are curse free again. After all, the good always triumphs over the evil!”

“Will you stop making fun of me?” Ariel asked irritated. She had had enough of Joe and his rubbish! He kept poking fun at her and her beliefs. Ariel was a practical woman, she knew that she must have seemed a bit crazy, but it was on Discovery channel! Discovery never lies!

Besides these, ever since Ariel left the hotel, she had been having weird vibes. From the doorman, to the guide/manager/helper/assistant-Akbar! None of these people seemed right to her. Specially Akbar. She pushed that thought aside quickly. Akbar had been nothing but nice to them. She was feeling more and more paranoid by the minute. She had enough, she had to get away from Joe.

“Excuse me.” She whispered to Joe, and then louder…”Excuse me!” to Akbar.

“Where are you going?” Joe asked grabbing hold of her hand.

Ariel quickly looked toward Akbar. He had a weird expression on her face, she couldn’t describe. Maybe he was smiling within, thinking how much in love Joe was with Ariel.

“As far away from you as possible!” Ariel hissed, but only so Joe could hear him. She gave a little smile towards Akbar to gesture that everything was OK between her and Joe.

“Oh, well, I don’t think I can give you that privilege.” Joe said a little hurt. He knew Ariel was a bit moody now, but he didn’t know she was angry. He guessed he went over board with his jokes.

“And why the hell not?” Ariel challenged him.

But Joe couldn’t control this retort.

“Because I don’t want you walking alone in this cursed city!” He smiled.

“Argh!” Ariel let out, not caring about Abar or the people around her. ‘I…’

“I know you love me…” Joe smiled and leaned forward to kiss Ariel.

Ariel realized Akbar was watching, so she obliged. She really wanted to kick him hard and run the opposite direction, but she decided to act like a civilized being.

“Aww honey, that’s right…now can I please go back to the hotel? I’m feeling a bit funny.”

“Ariel, come on! You know you shouldn’t! I bet you don’t want to either. You look fine…promise!” Joe said flashing the biggest smile he ever did. “Akbar, doesn’t she look fine to you?”

“Oh sir, she looks absolutely stunning! I think there shouldn’t be any problem. But just to be sure we wont go too far away from the hotel, just in case.”

“There you go! That’s a solution to our problems! Akbar you’re a genius! I must say!”

“Thank you sir…now if you look to your right, you will see the…

Ariel was so infuriated. She let Joe kiss her, and now she has to spend the rest of the day sweet taking to him. She wanted to punch him hard across his stomach!

“Now pyramids were made, to bury the kings and queens. In each pyramid, you would find the body, of a king or a queen. These bodies have been mummified to be preserved. Next to the bodies you would have found gold, and silver. Ornaments that these rulers possessed. They like any wealthy fool, liked to be buried with their most prized possessions, and thought that they would spend their time as the dead, by guarding these ornaments. That’s why you probably have their most trusted servants placed in the pyramids too.”

Ariel heard every word fascinated. She was intrigued by the tales Akbar told them about king and queens. How they lived, how they died. Were they good at ruling…every word gripped Ariel.

Joe too was very intently listening to Akbar. He always was a fan of the subject of history, and Egypt, India, and Greece intrigued him. As they had ancient history attached in their culture.

Akbar showed them new sites, introduced them to his friends, took them to lunch, in one of Egypt’s finest restaurant. At night he showed them the local village, where the cultures of ancient Egypt were still prominent.

The promise of staying close to the hotel was long forgotten. Ariel and Joe, forgot about their quarrels and started enjoying the tour as a real couple. They laughed, shared jokes, and played together.

“Well, I think it’s dinner time…your dinner is waiting back at the hotel. If you don’t mind, I have prior commitments. Excuse me, and bye. See you tomorrow.” Akbar smiled and walked away.

“Aww, this is where the fun ends eh?” Ariel sighed.

“If we have too much fun, we could get cursed!”

Ariel scowled. She was back with the ridiculously mean Joe!

Ariel woke up with a start. She was looking forward to touring Egypt again. She awoke, brushed her teeth, had a bath, and was ready to lave for breakfast.

Joe too woke up, did all his morning chores, and wore his plain white shirt with white trousers.

Ariel and Joe were about to leave for their tour when Ariel’s handset started ringing. She had completely forgotten about it. She left it at the top of the dressing table the of check in, and since had never touched it.

“Probably Ella, or my parents missing me…” She thought aloud.

“Well, you answer that call. I too, want to go out and make a call to my dad. Excuse me.” He smiled.

Ariel grunted in response and sprang to answer her handset. She was still very angry with Joe. About practically everything. Anything would go wrong, and she would blame Joe. She felt he deserved it.

The handset screen blinked to show Ella’s name. Ariel was very happy to see her best friend’s name flash. She wanted to talk to her too. She quickly answered the call.

“Ariel?”

“Ella! Thank God you called…I missed you…”

“Ariel, I don’t have time for this. Hear me out. Wu Chun I a crook! He’s a cheat! He was only marrying you because he was forced, he intended to divorce you..”

“Ella? What?”

“Ariel please listen…Wu Chun was in trouble. Angela was pregnant, but she dropped her child for him. He didn’t love Angela, he was using her. At the same time, he was using many other girls. Wu’s parents forced him to get married, so he found you. He decided that he would divorce you in a year. Use you too…you get what I’m saying? The man you loved so much, the man you wanted to marry, he was cheating you. Do you get me Ariel? He was a cheat. He was relieved to get out of that marriage, because his father was ill, and he wrote the will in Wu Chun’s name. So there was no need for a marriage. He was going to break it up anyway…”

“How do you know this?” Ariel gasped. “How do you know this?!” She demanded.

“Ariel, I told you I would find out…I hired a girl, got him drunk, and made him reveal his secrets. He’s still doing wrong with Angela. Ariel…you’re lucky you got out when you did…he…”

“Are you sure?” Ariel asked breathless by now.

“Ariel…trust me…I wont lie to you…”

Ariel turned off her handset, and lied down on the bed. She closed her eyes trying to make sense of what just happened. Trying to understand what Ella told her. So marrying Joe was wrong. He saved her, from a world of trouble and lies. Joe saved her! And she’d trying to make his life miserable…she couldn’t believe herself. She had been an utter fool.

“Ma’am you were wrong…these two are really in love. I’ve observed them for two days, they’re really close. Yesterday, they were really helping each other, laughing, paying. Today Ariel was quiet, so Joe kept asking her what’s wrong, what happened to her…he was really concerned. And the way Ariel looked at Joe, it was…it was pure love.”

“Rubbish! You fool! Are you sure?” The woman yelled over the phone.

“Ma’am…I’m sure of this…I spied on them as their tourist. I was really close to them. Lucy…I mean Ma’am…it’s all true. They’re hopelessly in love.”

“Akbar! Are you sure? You couldn’t be right.” Akbar heard the desperation in Lucy’s voice. He was sure this is the first time he heard her loose control.

“Yes ma’am…I am.” Akbar said firmly.

“Well, I guess the plan I sketched, wouldn’t work out then…”

Akbar didn’t answer.

“What should we do now ma’am?” He was just waiting for further instructions, like an obedient worker. Akbar was asked to spy on Joe and Ariel, from the moment they land in Egypt. To give Lucy a brief about their relationship.

“I guess there’s only one solution.”

“What is that ma’am.”

“Of course you cant do it, you have to hire someone else...” He could hear the confidence in Lucy’s voice coming back.

“Kill her.” Lucy said firmly and put down the receiver.

TADA! Some drama...finally eh?! Well, I wont say the next chapters are going to be damn serious! Coz I realised I cant do that. Serious is just not my thing.

It's more my friend Inaara's forte!

Anyway I started a new story, it's called 'When Love Strikes...'

That too, is like a bit drama, but more comedy.

It stars the regular Ariel and Joe, but it also has Enrique Iglesias in it =P
