Chapter 12

Killer Consequences.

Joe knew something was wrong with her. It was written all over her face. It was written all over her behaviour. He didn’t know what it was. Was she sad? Was she angry? She looked lost. The expression in her eyes-it scared Joe. Her hazel eyes were blank. There was nothing in them. No emotion. The case was the same for her face. It was as if around her, the world became gloomy.

Joe wanted to talk to her, he wanted to ask her what was wrong. But he was afraid he might be the problem. Maybe he was causing her to be so depressed. He didn’t know what he did wrong. But then a thought occurred to him. Maybe she missed her fiancé. Ex- fiancé. What was his name?

Whatever the reason was, Joe knew she was sad. Knowing that she was sad, made him sad. He couldn’t explain why. Maybe now that he knew her for ten days, he felt closer to her. Even though there were many distances between them. Maybe it was because she was his wife, and no matter what the circumstances, or what the situation was between them, she was still his wife and he was a very family oriented person.

But then Joe thought of her. How she forgot to smile for the past day, how she didn’t pick a fight with him even once throughout yesterday, how she looked like she was on the verge of tears. What could possibly do this to her? Joe thought as he lay on his bed. Today was the end of their honeymoon. Ariel had taken the excuse of going gift shopping for her parents and Ella.

Ella! A thought struck Joe. Ever since that phone call from Ella, Ariel had started acting weird. Joe had a feeling Ariel wanted to tell him something, but couldn’t muster up the courage to tell. Maybe Ella had the answers.

Joe quickly looked around. He hoped Ariel’s phone was around. He started rummaging through the room. Everything was packed, but he was sure Ariel’s phone wouldn’t be. He hoped Ariel didn’t take her phone with her. But he was out of luck, she did take her phone.

“Damn! Now what do I do?” Joe cursed. “How do I know what’s wrong with her.”

What do women think? Was it even possible to decipher their moods? What they do and why they do it?

Ariel was a big mystery to Joe. Joe had never seen anyone like her. He just couldn’t understand her. Everything she did was weird, everything she thought was different, her beliefs were amusing. The first time they met, she forced him to marry her.

The second day, she insulted his parents.

But that day itself, she protected him, by acting like a loving wife in front if his friends.

Then she made him laugh with her fear of cockroaches.

The day next, she tortured him by acting as though she had her first strike at him.

Then in Egypt, she was just as amusing as ever.

Her moods and behaviours changed like the weather. They were just as unsteady, just as unpredictable. He just hoped that now Ariel would come back to normal and fight with him. Because in the past ten days, he had begun to love their charade. He didn’t want things to go different. He wanted to fight with Ariel for the rest of his life.

“Are we ready to go?” Joe asked as they left the comfort of the air-conditioned hotel. They were now walking towards their driver, suitcases in hand, in the deserted parking lot.

“Yes...we are.” Ariel replied in her recently attained soft tone.

“You...um...ok?” Joe finally muttered up the courage and asked her what he wanted to for the past 36 hours.

“Yeah, I am.” Ariel smiled.

“OK what’s wrong? You never smile up at me!”

“Oh...” Ariel blushed embarrassed.

“What happened to you?”

“Noth...nothing.”

“Well, what did Ella say?”

There it was, that expression Joe dreaded. Ariel looked up at him as soon as he spoke those words, and he could see she was choking up. She looked like she would cry.

“I...I’m sorry I...”

“Excuse me sir, your plane is in one hour, we better get moving.” The irritated driver interrupted.

Ariel got into the car. She chose to sit in the passenger seat rather than the back seat. This way she could avoid Joe. She looked down at her feet and cursed in her mind. Why did she wear sports shoes and not her Hawaii shoes? Now her feet were really warm and she could feel herself sweat. Even though it was ten in the night, the temperature was radical.

She bent down to take out her shoes, as she did she felt droplets fall on her back and neck preceded by a deafening sound. She didn’t understand anything, until the icy cold liquid dripped along to her front. It was thick and red. Horrified Ariel looked up. The driver next to her was lying dead with a bullet on the side of his head.

Ariel let out a loud scream! Suddenly she felt her seat pull backwards and another deafening sound. As she was being pulled back she caught something silver pass by her.

“Get down!” Joe yelled from behind.

“What’s happening?” Ariel was surprised she could still speak.

“Someone is attacking us! I think there has been a mistake! We better...” Another deafening sound was heard. There were echoes of footsteps heading towards them. Ariel felt terror. She looked over at Joe, he seemed calm but Ariel knew better.

“Come out now! I just want the girl, give me the girl and no one gets hurt!”

“Ariel don’t be scared, stay calm.” Joe whispered. She knew he was fidgeting with something next to her.

“Give me the girl! I don’t want to hurt you!”

Joe quietly shifted the driver out of the car. He prayed the killer wouldn’t realize what he was doing, but you couldn’t move a man out of your car without a thud.

“What’s happening?! Don’t try anything funny!”

“Ariel...” Joe whispered again. “Do you know how to drive?”

“Yes.” Ariel replied. Her voice seemed alien to her. It was shaky, and cracked.

“Do you think you could handle the stick now? Are you in a position to do it?”

“I...I think so...”

“Good.” Joe pressed a key against her hand, and urged her to be brave.

“I’m counting to five! Give me the girl, or else I take drastic meas...”

But Ariel didn’t wait for him to complete his sentence, she quickly raised herself, pushed herself in the drivers seat, put the key in the ignition and hit the pedals! She speeded out of the parking lot, as the deafening sound of bullets filled the air.

They drove in silence for the following five minutes, they didn’t have any words to say. They were scared the shooter might try and follow them. Finally Joe cleared his throat.

“That man...whoever he is...he’s after you!”

Ariel dreaded those words. That thought had haunted her throughout the drive. Hearing it from Joe, just confirmed it.

“But...but why?”

“I don’t...” Joe cut off. Ariel turned to look at him. She relaxed her foot from the accelerator. She could feel the fear on her face. The fear he felt was probably ten times more than she did, but neither Ariel, nor Joe had realized that.

“Do you...do you think he’s following us?”

“Well, I haven’t...he didn’t...” Joe took a great calming breathe. “There are no signs of anyone following us, but to be safe, let’s keep driving.”

“Where do we go?”

“Home...I have the tickets, and the directions to the airport. I say, we just get on the plane, and go home.”

“But...” Ariel didn’t want to ask the question, but she didn’t want to hide anything from Joe. “But, what if he reaches the airport?”

“It’s a crowded place, I’m sure he wouldn’t try to attack us there. There is a lot of security in the airport.”

“Yeah, yeah you’re right. You’re right. I...could you take over the wheel? I cant...handle this anymore.”

“Sure.”

“Thanks.”

“Ariel...don’t be scared. It would be fine now.” Joe smiled at her. Ariel sighed and smiled back.
