She begged the doctor to give her medicine, to give her anaesthesia and make her unconscious so she wouldn’t feel the pain. But the doctor refused. He believed that every woman must give birth naturally. She thought he should try giving birth for a change, with resentment.
“Please doctor! I cant take it anymore.”
“Push harder, she’s about to come out.” The doctor cringed his nose at the smell. Forty years he helped give birth to countless babies, and he still couldn’t stand the smell of newly born babies. Or stand the sight of them covered in blood and white dispatch.
The woman gave a final scream of pain and pushed with all her might. Finally her pain was gone, and in it’s place lay a beautiful baby girl.
The doctor reluctantly took the baby in his hands and showed her to her mother. Although he hated seeing or touching a baby just out of her mother’s womb, he loved the part of showing the baby to their proud parents.
“She’s beautiful.” The woman gasped.
“Where’s the father?” The doctor asked with a smile.
“He…he…” The woman hesitated. She had dreaded this question. She knew the society would frown upon hearing that this child was a bastard.
“Ohh, he died?” The doctor asked her. He was old-fashioned and would always assume something tragic, than something taboo.
The woman sighed. She was never to see this man again, it didn’t matter to her what he assumed. She was doing wrong in the eyes of so many; it wouldn’t matter if in the eyes of just one man, she was a saint who gave birth to the child of a dead man.
“Yes.” She lied, praying to God that it wasn’t considered a sin to lie to the man who helped give birth to your child.
“Poor child, you have to raise her by yourself. Be strong woman, I’m sure God will find you a way.”
“Thank you doctor.” She smiled.
“She’ll just be taken for a little clean up. Get all the blood out of her. Then we will put her right next to you. Rest for a day, and then you may leave.” He said as he gave the child to a nurse for the clean up.
“Yes doctor.” The woman replied.
“Erm…when you leave, please pay at the reception. Have a wonderful life my dear.” He said and left the room.
Hebe watched as the doctor left the room. She sighed. The only reason she had chosen this hospital, was because of him. She couldn’t really afford the hospital. The fees would take her entire life savings, but she didn’t have another choice. The baby’s father was here, with his wife. The happy couple, Hebe thought resentfully, were going to have a child as well.
Arron and Gui Gui, must have seemed as a happy couple to their friends and relatives from afar, but in reality, they bickered and argued over every second point. There was no love there.
‘She cant love you like I love you Arron.’ Hebe thought to herself.
“Here she is Mrs. Yan.” The nurse said handing over the baby to Hebe. Hebe had registered herself as Mrs. Cheng. Arron Yan’s wife. If the hospital authority took one look at Gui Gui and her form, they would definitely be confused. Hebe laughed.
“What’s so funny Mrs. Yan?” The nurse smiled at Hebe.
“Nothing. Erm, do you by any chance know…where is Mrs. Gui Gui Yan’s ward?”
“Mrs. Yan?” The nurse asked puzzled. She tried to put two and two together, how were Mrs. Yan and this lady related? They shared the same last name. “She’s in the luxury ward, in room 2.”
“Thank you.” Hebe said laughing inwardly at the nurse’s confusion.
*** “You!” Arron yelled pulling Hebe away from the room. “She’s sleeping.”
“Then this is a good chance for us to discuss our situation.” Hebe said firmly. She wasn’t going to shy away this time. She wasn’t going to get scared. This concerned her life, her life and her child’s. If she got scared this time, she would ruin her chances of entering the privileged Yan family.
“Situation? What situation? I have nothing to do with you!”
“Really? Then what about our baby?” She asked brimming with tears; Arron believed they were fake tears.
“I told you to abort it. You should’ve listened. There’s no room for her in my life.”
“Why are you doing this Arron? You said you loved me. You said you would take care of me, protect me.”
“That’s before I realised you were after my money, not me!” Arron snapped. He had had enough of this. He couldn’t take the sight of Hebe anymore. He loved her, until the day he heard her plotting about what she would do with all his money. That was the day that broke his heart. He was ready to leave Gui Gui for Hebe, until that fateful day.
“I…I’m not. I love you. I really do.”
“You love my money! I heard it myself!”
“You’re mistaken Arron! I really do love you. If I only loved your money, I would’ve looked for someone else, someone richer, when you left me.”
“You overestimate your beauty.” Arron replied coldly.
“Arron, don’t do this please! Look…look at our child. I named her, the name you loved so much, Lucy!” Hebe said almost shoving the baby at Arron’s face.
“How am I to believe she’s mine? You must’ve slept with a million rich men.”
“Arron!” Hebe gasped.
“Get lost.” Arron spat. “I have a baby with Gui Gui. I don’t want to see you ever again!”
“Arron! Arron!” Hebe pleaded after Arron went into the room. She pound on the door, but was soon dragged away by the nurses.
She left the hospital, she couldn’t bear to be there anymore. All was lost, her dreams for her and her baby. He love, her money. To make it worse this baby had no rights over the Yan fortune too. Arron even refused to recognise the baby as his.
She was to raise the baby on her own, with no support and the world looking down on her.
*** “Mom,” Lucy Tian looked up at her mother, tears crawling over her cheeks, “where’s my father?” She had to know the answer to this question. Since she was five, and the children at her school teased her about her not having a father, she had asked this question to her mother over and over again.
Hebe looked into those innocent eyes. For seven years, she had raised her daughter alone. With no help of any sort. She had to tolerate disgusted looks from parents. No one supported her or took her side. She was shunned in meetings with parents. The teachers had requested her not to attend them. No one liked a bastard among them.
“Your father…he’s in heaven.” Hebe gave her daughter the same answer she always gave when Lucy would ask such a question.
“That’s not what Thomas says…he said you were a bad lady, and that I’m a bad girl because I’m your daughter.” Lucy said bluntly not knowing the consequences of her words.
“Thomas…is wrong.” Hebe replied. She tried to hide the tears forming in her eyes. She needed to be brave for her daughter.
“Where’s my daddy, mommy?” Lucy asked again.
“The truth?” Hebe asked bravely. Her daughter was ready to hear the truth and she wasn’t going to lie.
“The truth.” Lucy nodded.
“Your father, doesn’t want us. Your daddy has another wife and daughter. He doesn’t need us. He told us to never see him again.”
“But why mommy?” Lucy asked tears forming in her eyes at her mother’s words. Her father didn’t want her?
“Because, his wife is afraid we would take away all his money, the money we deserve.”
“The money we deserve?” Lucy repeated not realising her mother was lying to her.
“Daddy has a lot of money and factories, but his wife was afraid he would give it all to us, so she stole it from us, see, daddy loves us more than them.” Hebe replied. She didn’t know if she was lying or she truly believed this.
“She is a bad woman.” Lucy said angrily. Hebe bent down and wiped Lucy’s tears. She wasn’t to know the damage she had done. She wasn’t to know the monster she had created with those words.
‘I promise to bring back the money and the factories we deserve mommy.’ Lucy thought to herself. ‘I promise to bring back daddy!’
