She laughed inwardly. She had taken a course in journalism, and prepared herself with good grades and high accomplishments, just for this day.
She had worked, two jobs, and juggled between her studies and work, to earn enough money to pay for her fees, and take care of her ailing mother.
For eighteen years, she had been reading about Yan Industries. About how they went into a loss, and formed a partnership with Howard Cheng. The business world had gone into a shock, when the dark ages hit them. Everyone had gone into loss, except for a few blessed companies.
At the time there were rumours of Lucy Yan, dating Baron Cheng, son of Howard Cheng and owner of Cheng communications. They were the ones who hadn’t gone into a loss, even though most of their clients did.
In fact they had made profit out of their clients miseries. Their clients kept making deals, asking them to show their products in a better light, so their products would be bought by the common man, suffering from losses of his own. More and more clients joined them.
Yan Industries had gone into a total loss. Mr. Arron Yan sold every last factory, offices, and bungalows he had, and also his shares. He was in a desperate situation. With only NT$ 2 Million in his hands, he decided to get his daughter married off to Baron and formed a deal to be 20 percent partner of Cheng Communications.
Lucy Tian, had been following every piece of information about the Cheng’s and the Yan’s for the past eighteen years. Everything from their alliance, to the romance between Lucy and Baron Cheng.
Every time she read about Lucy Yan, and how beautiful she was, or how sophisticated she was, or what a good wife she made, Lucy’s head boiled. She kept thinking how that was supposed to be her place. She was supposed to marry Baron Cheng, she was to be loved and adored by him and her father. She was supposed to be featured in newspapers and articles.
Lucy took in a deep breath. She didn’t want to ruin her mood. Today she was going to meet her father. Finally after 25 years. She had only seen him in papers and news articles. Of course, then she had seen him on Lucy Yan’s wedding. She was so happy that day. She took a picture with him on that day and ran back to the hospital to show her mother.
“You have his eyes.” Her mother said gleefully.
She wondered if he would be interested to know her. After all, it was his pathetic wife Gui Gui Yan that wouldn’t allow for her mother and herself to be a part of his life. So maybe, if she told him, she wanted to know him better and that she was his daughter, maybe he would want her.
But another thought occurred to Lucy. Arron Yan could have gotten close to his daughter without letting Gui Gui know about it. If he really wanted it, he could make it happen. Was it really that difficult to find out where she was and come to her and be her father? She had been reading about him travelling the world recently, was it really that difficult to lie to Gui Gui Yan saying he was touring the world, and come meet his daughter?
She immediately pushed the thought aside. Maybe he forgot he had another daughter. Maybe Gui Gui Yan lied to him saying she was dead. As absurd as these thoughts were, she wouldn’t put it past Gui Gui. Because her mother had called at least five times in the past twenty five years, asking him to come meet his daughter. And she told Lucy, as she cried later, that every time Gui Gui picked up and told her to get lost.
Lucy fumed inwardly at the thought of Gui Gui. She bet that just like her mother, Lucy Yan would be a spoilt rich brat, who wouldn’t let her father share his love with her. She got to know if that was true in person five years ago in college. She met Lucy and Baron. She acted as the soul of good will, as she helped them get together. She danced in their wedding, and blessed them both with a smile on her face.
Lucy Yan after the wedding, was completely drunk, and just as the guests were leaving, she pulled Lucy aside and confided in her, the secret her and her father were hiding from her mother Gui Gui, for the past twenty four years.
“Lucy, when I first saw you, I really hated you.” She said half asleep. “I saw my father in you. The way you walked, the way you talked, and your name, Lucy, Lucy Tian, when I told my father, he was shocked. He said to me, that he once dated a girl called Tian, and that she had a daughter Lucy. She named her after my father’s favourite name, and said that that child was my father’s. Can you believe that? That friggin bitch!” Lucy Yan hiccupped.
Lucy Tian gulped. Was her secret going to be out? Was Lucy going to tell her she knows everything? She looked at Lucy and wanted to slap her. She called her mother a bitch. When the fact was her mother was the biggest bitch alive!
“When I saw you…” Lucy Yan continued. “I believed you were my father’s daughter. Your eyes…” Lucy subconsciously closed her eyes, and opened them again. She was terrified of her secret being revealed.
“…Your eyes…they were like my dad’s. I got close to you, just to see, if you were really what I thought you were. But you know…what changed my mind?”
Lucy blinked in confusion, she turned her head as if to say, she didn’t know.
“Your kindness. The way you helped me and Baron, and how you are so good to us. If it was that whore’s daughter, she would probably try to kill me or something. I mean, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree right?” Lucy laughed, she gave a final hiccup and lay flat unconscious.
Lucy was so angry then, she slapped the unconscious girl, and kicked her around for a while to take off her anger. Then she placed her in her room, and left.
She hid the details from her mother. But she knew now that her father was really in the dark. Gui Gui Yan had told her father that Hebe was lying? The nerve of that woman! Lucy thought angrily.
She tried to remain calm, but inwardly she was angry. She wanted to demolish the pair of mother and daughter. She somehow wanted to wipe them away and put her and her mother in their place.
At the thought of her mother, tears came into her eyes. Her mother was so strong. She fought for her place in the world. She worked endlessly to support Lucy, but still found time to make her happy. When she was little Lucy had no friends, as all the parents would ask their kids to stay away from her. But her mother made every day special for her, so much so that she didn’t even care that she couldn’t have birthday parties. It was always her and her mother cutting a cup cake.
Tears threatened to fall down her cheek when Lucy quickly straightened up. Her mother was now suffering from cancer, and lying in the Government hospitals, which were cheap, but of no help. She wished she could give her mother better treatment, but a Government hospital was all she could afford.
“Hey Lucy!” Lucy quickly wiped her tears and looked up. Baron and Lucy Cheng, the happy couple, were staring down at her.
She forced a smile to form on her face and said a weak…”Hi” in response.
“Aww, are you nervous?” Lucy Yan asked with a smile.
“Kind of.” Lucy replied. She wasn’t nervous because of the job. After all, no one else was in sight, and she was friends with the boss’s son and daughter-in-law. She was nervous because she was going to meet, and talk to Arron Yan. Her father.
This was her chance to bring him back. Her mother’s dying wish was to die in the arms of the man she loves. She would complete her mother’s wish, and also finally fulfil the promise she made to herself.
“Well, what if I told you, you got the job?” Baron smiled.
“What?” Lucy asked surprised. “What do you mean?”
“Well, look around you. Do you see other people in line for the interview?” He asked.
“Well…no.” Lucy said suspiciously. What was going on?
“And, you are friends with the boss’s son and daughter-in-law.” Lucy Yan squealed.
Lucy looked at them wildly. They had just voiced her thoughts. But she still didn’t know what was going on.
“So…?”
“So…my father, Arron Yan, is busy, and so he left it to us to choose the new copy writer!” Lucy Yan smiled brightly.
“So…?”
“So?” Baron Cheng said impatiently. “So we are choosing you, Lucy Dimwit Tian, to be our new copwriter!”
“Oh…”Lucy said disappointed. She had hoped to meet her father today. She had hoped to talk to him, listen to his voice, breathe in the same air as him.
To Lucy, her father was her everything. He was her celebrity, her God. People turned to God when they were down, or to entertainment. She turned to her father. Pictures of him, and she wished she could meet him some day and talk to him, like she was his daughter.
Sorrow washed all over her body.
“What happened?” Lucy Yan asked sensing her disappointment.
“Nothing.” Lucy sighed and gave a bright smile.
“If you’re thinking…” Baron said suddenly. “…that you’re getting this job because of us, well then…you’re right. You don’t have any credit or experience but, being our friend got you this job.”
“Baron!” Lucy Yan exclaimed.
“But what’s wrong in that? Everyone works on the basis of recognition. If there was an option between my friend and some stranger, why wouldn’t I pick my friend? And what’s wrong if my friend took that job? I took my friend, because I know he would be good at the job. Not just because he is my friend. I mean, if you use, a name to go forward, what’s wrong in that?”
“Right!” Lucy Yan smiled.
Lucy looked up at the both of them with tears in her eyes. The only shot she had to meet her father, and talk to him was gone. Arron Yan only hired people, he never worked in the company. He barely came in. He went touring with Gui Gui everywhere. When would she see him again?
“Aww, don’t cry.” Lucy Yan exclaimed, rubbing Lucy’s tears, while Lucy cried over her father, and laughed inwardly at how stupid Baron and Lucy Cheng were.
