The events of last night came to her mind. She blushed at her boldness. Never had she done anything like this. This was the first time with a man, but of all the ways she imagined it would be, she certainly didn’t think she would be the first one to make a move. The fact that she undid her clothes for him, even though he didn’t seem like he wanted to continue, made her wince. When had she gotten so bold? She wondered.
But even her inexperience told her no guy would do it over and over again, all through the night, if they weren’t comfortable with the idea. Maybe he was uncomfortable at first, but warmed up to the idea of her later. And how!
She remembered the entire night, and blushed some more. What was she thinking? She didn’t regret making love to Joe. But she did regret the way they got to it. You wouldn’t guess by the way she acted that this was her first time with a man. Would Joe ever believe her she was if she told him? She guessed not.
But Joe was a nice guy, and she was sure he would believe her. He wouldn’t make her uncomfortable. He had treated her like a delicate angel at first, and then became more passionate as she got more comfortable. She could still remember every detail of the night, and she doubted if she would ever forget it. She would never forget how gentle he was, or how caring.
But another horrible thought struck her, and she opened her eyes quickly. She turned to her side to find Joe gone. He wasn’t in bed. Maybe, he didn’t enjoy last night much. Maybe he found her lacking compared to his other women. Surely a man like Joe...it wouldn’t be his first time. Maybe what was love making for her, was just sex for him? Ariel couldn’t bear the thought.
She quickly showered, and dressed and went down to the kitchen to find Joe busy behind the stove.
“Joe?” She called out unsure.
“Ah! Ariel, you’re here just in time. I was arguing with myself, if I should get you breakfast in bed, or if you would come down to eat with me. I didn’t want to wake you, you looked so pleasant. I’m trying to make some breakfast, but unfortunately I’m failing miserably.” He smiled a charming smile of complete helplessness, and Ariel couldn’t control the grin that broke out on her face.
“Let me do it.”
“No, no, you sit down. I’ll do it. You just give me the instructions.”
“Sure.” Ariel smiled, and told him all there was to making pancakes.
Once the pancakes were out of the oven, Joe served them in two plates, and poured some honey on it, and brought it to the table.
“Mmm. Delicious.” Ariel said taking a big bite of the pancake. As soon as it was in her mouth she realised how hungry she was. They had reached the bungalow in the evening, and spent all night together. They never ate anything in the plane too. Finally at some point of the night, they fell asleep exhausted. Ariel heard Joe’s soothing snores, and fell asleep herself.
“Thank you. Couldn’t have done it without you.”
‘He seems happy.’ Ariel noticed. Maybe last night wasn’t such a disappointment to him. He hadn’t run away from her. He was bringing her breakfast in bed. Maybe he had planned something after that too, and she had ruined it by running down there in a state of panic.
“Thank you Joe. For the breakfast, for not waking me up...because I really needed my sleep, and for...” She swallowed, and decided to say it anyway. “For last night.”
“No Ariel, I have to thank you.” Joe took her hand in his, and looked into her eyes, completely serious now. “After the whole incident with Vikram, and this whole bloody week, I just...wasn’t myself. And you...you gave me the best gift I could ever ask for.”
“No Joe, you don’t know how much it means to me...last night...it was wonderful...I want to say sorry, for all the rotten things I ever did to you. After the truth came out, I was worried. I thought you would hate me, that you would be rotten to me, but you...you’re just so kind. I imagined you to be anything, but this. You made me really happy Joe.”
“I made you happy?” Joe smiled. “You just made me, the happiest man by saying that.”
“I thought this would be uncomfortable...it would be awkward, for us to...to talk about this. I got up today, I was very happy, but I thought...”
“What?”
“I thought...I don’t know. I thought you would regret it, and well, ignore me.”
“That’s impossible Ariel. We both know, last night was special. And the fact that you are sharing this with me, that’s pretty incredible. I didn’t know you could be so...”
“Bold?” Ariel winced.
“...open with me.” Joe finished with a smile.
“Oh Joe.” Ariel reached out for a hug.
The next second she heard a glass break. Joe and Ariel turned to the direction of the sound. They found shattered pieces of glass lying on the floor. The mirror had broken.
“DUCK!” Joe yelled and pulled Ariel to the floor.
“What?” Ariel asked as she landed on the ground with a thud. “What happened?”
“There’s a bullet there. We’re being attacked.” Joe replied. “Quick! Get to the door.” He said and they both crawled towards the door carefully. They could hear another bullet fire, and a vase breaking.
Ariel reached the doorknob, and opened it. She grabbed Joe’s hand and ran out the door. They quickened their pace as they heard the rustling of grass, and heavy footsteps. Joe reached for the car, but remembered he had left the keys back in the house.
“There’s no option, we’ve just got to run for it.” Joe grabbed Ariel’s hand and ran towards the street.
“Joe, he’ll shoot us! We need to get away fast.” Ariel said following Joe.
“I don’t know what to do. We cannot go back in the house! Our only option is to run.”
Ariel didn’t argue, she let Joe lead her to wherever. She couldn’t open her mouth. They turned a corner and found a taxi there. They jumped into the taxi, locked the doors and crouched on the floor of the car to be hidden.
“What are we going to do Joe?” Ariel was starting to panic. This was the second time they were being attacked. She had no idea why they were being constantly attacked, and how the attackers managed to find them a second time. Joe had told her people were expecting them in their house back in Taiwan. But who knew about this place except Joe’s mother?
Ariel’s eyes grew wide open. Joe had only told his mother about being in Dubai and no one else. No! There was someone else. Some girl, he had called her in the plane. Only Joe’s mother, and that girl knew about them going to Dubai. She swallowed the lump forming in her throat. It couldn’t be. Joe’s mother wasn’t setting this up. The other girl...it’s the other girl who is doing this. Who probably informed the killers they were here. But why would she do that? Maybe Joe had the answers.
“Joe...you don’t think...”
She couldn’t complete the sentence. The car was suddenly moving. A sense of doom spread over Ariel. Joe quickly got up and looked at the driver. Whoever it was, Joe wasn’t very happy with it.
“You?!”
There was no reply from the driver. Ariel still sat crouched on the floor of the car. Joe’s hands pressed her face down to her knees.
“Stop the car right now!”
“And have you killed sire? I wouldn’t do that.” Ariel recognised the voice immediately. It was Vikram! She was so glad to hear his voice. She pushed away Joe’s hand and got up to sit on the seat.
“Ariel, what are you doing? Get down! Vikram could be one of them!”
“No sire I’m not. I can promise you this with my life. I would never kill the son of my most adorable mistress.”
“Oh yeah? How do I believe you? According to you, this mistress of yours is dead!”
“Again sire, I ask you, should I show you her grave? Because that might convince you.”
“My mother is back home at Taiwan worried about me and Ariel! She is not dead...why am I arguing with you?!”
“Sire, I do not wish to make you angry. Right now, I must focus on getting you both to a safe place.”
“How do I trust you Vikram?”
“Think of it this way sire...if I betray you, I betray your beautiful mother. The woman who gave me this job that I have been working in for forty years.”
“Fine. But where are you taking us?”
“To my home sire. Where you and mistress Ariel can relax.”
“Thank you Vikram.”
“And sire, I must inform you, sadly...Gillian is dead.”
