Chapter 22

Lost Love.

First Selina, then Gillian, and now Ariel. Why is everybody in my life leaving me? And now my mother...she’s shot. I have to save her, or she’ll leave me too.

“Joe...I’m sorry I couldn’t save her...” Lucy was saying as she was led into the ambulance, lying on a stretcher.

“Mother, it’s fine. Please concentrate on yourself.”

Am I destined, to be alone?

“I’m really sorry Joe.” Lucy said as they got her into the van.

Why now when Ariel and I got so close? When I fell in love with her? Why can’t I protect the women I love? I couldn’t protect Selina, Gillian probably died because of me, and now Ariel...I couldn’t protect her even though I was so close.

“Take care, Joe. I’m sure they’d find her.”

“Thanks Mom.” Joe said making sure she was surely in the van. “I’d be in the hospital soon, I promise.”

“Ok honey, just take care of yourself.” Lucy said as the doors closed.

Now my mother, she’s shot on her arm, and then that bloody...he shoots Ariel, and now she’s nowhere to be found.

“Where could she have gone? My mother said the man shot her on her chest and she fell back into the deep cliff.” Joe said annoyed by the police. They were taking so much damn time.

“Sir, we checked everywhere, but she’s nowhere. There’s blood around the place she fell, and then she disappeared.”

“But, surely this must mean she’s alive. She has to be, if she could get up and walk away from the spot...”

“Sir, we’re pretty sure she’s dead, we found too much blood loss, we’re sure someone must have picked her body and dumped it somewhere...”

“Shut up!” Joe snapped at the inspector. “What kind of inspector are you? I’m asking you to investigate, and you refuse? Isn’t it your duty? How can a dead body be moved without any trace! I’m sure she’s alive, maybe someone took her to a hospital...please go check all the hospitals in this area...I’m sure someone must have...”

“Sir, we’ve done our job, there’s no more investigation to be made. I am sorry, but I have to call my team back. Excuse me.” The inspector says trying to walk away, but Joe grabs him by the collar and makes him meet his eye.

“She’s alive damn it! She’s alive.” Joe said shaking him profusely. “I want you to further investigate the case, go check the hospitals, ask the locals. Surely this is not the end of the investigation. Surely I don’t have to tell you how to investigate a case.”

“Sir, please leave my collar.” The inspector said as he shakes Joe off him. “The investigation is over. We have proclaimed Ariel dead, please move on and let us move on. There’s many a pending case demanding our time.”

Joe let go of him, and watched him summon his team. They all got into cars and left the area. Joe looked after them in disbelief. They were behaving very odd.

Wasn’t it their duty to collect every possible information, and go through every single possibilities? Ariel’s body couldn’t be found, surely it would mean something. Maybe she was alive. But the carelessness of the inspector was unbearable.

If Ariel really is alive, then right now she must be wounded. She must be struggling between life and death, and he had to rescue her. He didn’t care about anything now, he was going to find Ariel.

Joe got into his car and drove to the area beneath the cliff. He looked around for Ariel. There was blood on the green grass and stones. A large portion of the grass was pressed down, and scattered.

“This must be where she landed.” Joe thought and bent down to examine the grass. “There’s drops of blood leading the way...” He followed those drops and reached at a point near the sea.

“No!” Joe exclaimed. He ran into the sea and started swimming around looking for Ariel. “She might still be floating somewhere. She’s alive! She didn’t drown!” Joe mumbled frantically as he searched around the sea for Ariel. “She’s not dead...she’s not dead...” He chanted like a mantra.

“What are you doing? Are you trying to drown?!” A voice came from behind. Joe ignored it and looked around some more. Occasionally kneeling down and dropping his head inside the sea for more clues.

As he moved farther into the sea, he felt a hand behind him. “Please get out, the sea is not safe. It has sharks, and other such dangerous creatures. The deeper you go, the more dangerous it becomes.”

“Please get lost!” Joe replied and went deeper into the sea without even turning around to see the woman who was now trying to turn him to face her.

“Come out, or I’ll put you in jail.”

“Oh you will put me in jail, will you?” Joe snapped. He turned around to find himself staring at a very beautiful woman. But Joe didn’t care who she was, he had to find Ariel, and he had to find her before the sharks got to her, as the woman pointed out.

“Yes, my father is the chief of the security in this area, and one word to him would put you in jail.” The woman replied. She looked into his eyes and felt a warmth spread through her. “You...you’re very handsome.” She said unexpectedly. Joe looked at her for a moment, and turned away.

“I need to find my wife.” He said, and then an idea struck him. “Your father is the chief of coast guard? Do you think he could help me look for her?”

“Y-your wife?” The woman asked, she felt disappointment rush through her.

“Yes my wife. She was shot up on the cliff, she landed down here, and then, I think she walked over to the sea.”

“She was shot? Who shot her?” The woman asked incredulously. “This town is very safe, no one could possibly shoot anyone here.”

“Well then the shooter wasn’t from this town, was he?” Joe snapped. This woman was irritating him a lot.

“I’m...I’m sorry...I must come across very stupid...but, if she fell from such a great distance, there’s no chance for her to survive.”

“Shut up! I’m telling you, she walked over from there,” Joe said pointing to a spot near the cliff. “To the sea. She was obviously capable of moving, but she was injured, so she might drown...please either help me, or leave me alone.”

“I’ll help you.” The woman replied instantly. Joe felt a wave of relief go through him. “I’m Rainie...Rainie Yang. My father’s name is Lucius. I’ll call him now. We could search the sea in his boat.” She smiled at him. “Don’t lose hope.” She said and ran towards a beach house, which Joe hadn’t seen before.

Rainie went into the house and looked for her father. She was pretty sure the man’s wife was dead, but she had to help him. Surely he must love her a lot, if he thought she was still alive even after the mighty fall.

Rainie being a true romantic, had to help him. She smiled to herself as she remembered him. His face was gorgeous. His body lean and tall. His wife was really lucky to have him.

“Papa.” She called out. “There’s a man out there who needs your help, come out fast papa, we may need your boat.”

“I cannot believe we didn’t find her. This means it’s true. She’s still alive, but somewhere far away.”

“Or, um...she sank to the bottom of the sea and was taken by a shark.” Rainie replied softly. She didn’t want to offend Joe, or hurt him, but it was pretty obvious that his wife was dead.

“Please don’t say that...” Joe said putting a hand to his mouth. He was tired, very tired. Ariel really was dead? He couldn’t believe it.

“I’m sorry...”

“Don’t be, you’re probably right. She’s...dead.” Joe said trying to stay calm. He didn’t want to get hysterical. Another woman in his life, dead.

“What was her name?” Rainie asked out of curiosity.

"Ariel...Ariel Lin Yi Chen.” Joe replied. The name bringing a sorrow to his face.

"Oh…that’s a lovely name.” Rainie replied wincing at Joe’s pained expression.

“It really is, isn’t it.” Joe said giving a smile. Rainie felt a tremor of desire run through her when she saw him smile.

‘If that smile was for me, wouldn’t I be so lucky?’ She thought and gave a smile of her own.

“I don’t know why it’s me...I fall in love with women, and they die. I’ve never hurt any woman, and I’ve never been disloyal. Heck my first fiancé was my very first girlfriend. After her, I never had anyone else in my life. And then Ariel came along...she was everything I ever wished for. And now she too, she’s dead.”

“Life isn’t fair.” Rainie replied as they got out of the boat.

“I have to go. I need to meet my mother at the hospital.” Joe said, as he put his hand forward for Rainie. “Nice to meet you, and thanks for the help.”

“Nice to meet you too.”

“And thank you Mr.Lucius.” Joe waved at the pair of them and left.

“Papa, do you think...I’d ever find someone like him?” Rainie asked as she saw him get into his car.

“Of course you would my love...of course you would.” Lucius Yang replied, just as Rainie’s pager beeped.
