But the little tear that dropped from his eyes, was the thing that broke the wall. She realized that that tear was because of her. She made another person cry. She was sad, upset and felt really pathetic. She wanted to slap herself.
She was just about to take a step to him when he finally spoke.
“Do you hate me that much?” He asked in a whisper.
She didn’t reply.
“They were my parents. They love me and they want me to be happy. They can’t see me in pain. They can’t see me marry someone who doesn’t love me, and know that I can’t have happiness. They were so happy…they were so happy that I am married now…so happy that I fell in love. So what if that didn’t really happen? I could still pretend…but you…you made them…how do I explain this to them now? They are so upset now because of you. Do you hate me that much…that to hurt me, you would hurt my parents?”
Ariel stood still. She realized her mistake. She wanted to hurt Joe, of course she did. She wanted him to feel pain. She wanted him to hurt, but not at the expense of his parents. He had done wrong to her, not his parents. She realized that she did wrong. But would apologising really make him forget what happened and forgive her?
Ariel sighed. Her plan was to make him beg for forgiveness, not the other way around. She thought it would be best to just leave the room. She got up to leave.
“I know Ariel...you’re upset with me, because I ruined your wedding. You might want to make me suffer. And for that I am ready. In fact, I beg you, to make me suffer. I deserve a punishment for what I did. I deserve to be tortured and ripped-apart. I deserve to be hated. But my parents don’t! Please, next time you want to hurt me, make sure you’re only hurting me. Not my family.” He said and left the room.
Ariel froze. He knew she wanted revenge? He knew she wanted to hurt him? Then why did he marry her when he knew all she wanted to do was make him suffer?
Ariel pushed that thought aside and picked up the phone directory, she knew what she had to do.

“The girl is not on his side.” The woman beamed. “If she can hurt his parents, she would be willing to do anything to hurt him.”
“Yes Madam. But I am sorry to say I have bad news.”
“What is it?” The woman frowned.
“She called in today. She called his father. She apologised.”
“What exactly did she say?”
“I don’t know madam. But whatever she said didn’t really make a difference. His father is still angry at her. He slammed the phone as soon as she apologised. I know this as I heard their conversation through the other phone.”
“Hmm. Let me go talk to his father then.”
“Yes madam. He has gone out for a walk.”
“Trying to throw away some steam, are we?”
“Madam, she wished to speak to you too, but your husband would not give her a chance. He told her she was a disgrace, and asked her to leave Joe immediately. He said only if she gave him a divorce will he forgive her.”
“Oh my! This is a problem. She cannot leave Joe. No! We need her. I have hatched a plan, and it all revolves around her.”
“What is the plan then madam?”
“In good time, Watson, you will come to know. You are my faithful assistant. I cannot exclude you from any of my schemes. You will know in good time.”
“Yes madam.” Watson said with a disappointed sigh. He knew this woman ever since she came into this house as Joe’s mother. He was with her all through thick and thin. He couldn’t believe she wouldn’t let him know her plan.
“Aww. Don’t be disappointed Watson. I just don’t think, now is the good time to discuss these plans. Now, be a good boy and get me some juice.”
“Yes Madam.”

“Joe! I heard you got married.” Dean said as he walked into Joe’s cabin.
“You heard right.” Joe answered not bothering to look up.
“You really got married?”
“Who’d you hear it from? Larry or Angelina?”
“Larry of course, he may be a man, but he sure can blab.”
“Why am I not surprised?”
“So...when’s the party?”
“What party?” Joe finally looked up from his work.
“Your wedding party of course!”
“What do you mean?”
“Well, you never had a bachelor party...you never had a reception...you never invited any of us for your wedding...”
“Who are us? Who does this us involve?”
“Well, me and the guys of course! And a few girls.”
“When Larry told you about the wedding, he never really went into the details did he?”
“Well, all he said was, Joe is married. Then he mumbled something like, ‘it’s all my fault.’ But I reckon I heard it wrong. He must’ve said something like, ‘He asked me to keep it in the vault.’ You know. He was upset he blabbed.”
“Of course he did.” Joe went back to his work. “There will be no party.”
“Sorry buddy, too late...it is closing time, and I already spread the word. Larry and Angelina have already left for your house with the food and the drinks. In about five minutes, the rest of us will be heading for your house too.”
“What!” Joe said getting up. He ran to his office door, and pushed it open. “Oh my God! They all left!”
“Wow. They work fast!”
“Are your crazy?! You...you...what will Ariel say!”
“Oh come on man! Are you that scared of your wife? She wouldn’t say a thing. We all just want to meet her and get to know the boss’s wife that’s all! She’ll be happy instead. We all chipped in and bought you guys a wedding present.”
“I...I...I have to get home.”
“I’ll give you a ride...come on.”

Joe walked into his house nervously. Ariel would’ve already thrown half of them out by now. He was sure about that. He was sure, she would be telling things about him, throwing attitude. Bitching about him or telling them to get lost.
He was about to knock on the door when Ariel opened it.
“Hello honey! I sure am surprised to see you. They told me you work till 10 P.M. I thought you wouldn’t come. I was just about to call you.” She then turned to the room. “Everyone, meet my husband, and your boss. Joe Cheng!”
Joe didn’t move. He stood there still as a wooden stick. Ariel turned around and kissed him on the lips briefly.
“Ah! What a lovely wife.” Dean said as he got into the house.
“Come in dear. Why are you standing there? Everyone’s waiting.”
“Hey lovely couple, dance for us will you?!”
“Oh no! I don’t dance...I’m very awkward.”
“Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaassssssssssssssssssssssssssseeeeeeeeeeeee!” Dean made a puppy dog face. “Wouldn’t everyone love to see them dance?” He asked turning around to the crowd. Everyone else followed suit and made a puppy face too.
“Ok!” Ariel said grabbing Joe’s arms and putting them around her waist.

“Bye then, hope you enjoyed the presents. Sorry about the lack of creativity from some people, they gave you cash, but hey, it’s useful!”
“Of course it is! Thanks again for the presents, and this lovely surprise party. I would love to see you guys again.” Saying this she closed the door and turned to leave to her room.
“Wait!” Joe stopped her. “I...just wanted to say...thanks...for...for all this...”
“No problem...sit down...I need to talk to you.” Ariel said signalling the chair. She took a pause and waited for Joe to be seated then continued. “I wanted to apologise to you...for the way I acted with your parents. I was just...just so eager to make you suffer. To take out my anger, frustrations, and my hate, that I forgot what’s right and what’s wrong. I even called your parents to apologise, but your father didn’t seem too pleased with me. I can understand why.”
“I hate you Joe. I really do. But I don’t hate you so much, that I would hurt your parents and friends just to displease you. I will continue to hate you, and to try and hurt you, and make you feel the pain, you gave me. But I won’t do that at the expense of your loved ones. This enmity is between me and you, and no one else. And from now on, I promise not to hurt anyone you love.”
“That’s...that is...thank you.” Joe smiled.
“Well...today has been a long day, shifted to the new house, upset your parents, and had a grand party and all this in a day...I cant wait to see how the rest of my life would be with you...See you!” She smiled and walked away.
Joe couldn’t think of anything else. All he could think of was the dance they shared, the brief kiss, and the fact that Ariel thinks they would spend the rest of their lives together.
