Chapter 8

The flight.

“Waaah! An aeroplane! I’m actually sitting on an aeroplane!” Ariel sighed loudly.

“You never sat on these before?” Joe shrugged. He tried to form his face into that of someone who doesn’t care, but couldn’t help smiling at Ariel’s innocence.

Ariel screwed up her nose and walked ahead without replying. She didn’t want to get close to this man. Already she had almost turned into the perfect wife! If she continued to talk to him as though they were friends, she would loose her marbles!

Joe noticed that she didn’t reply and walked behind her towards the business class or rather referred to as first class room. They found their seats and sat there in silence, Ariel was looking out of the window. Joe busied himself with a newspaper.

Suddenly a though occurred to him. He was not going to sit in the plane quietly with no one to talk to. This was a one day flight for Lord’s sake! A 24 hour flight and he had to sit quietly? He would die of boredom! He knew Ariel would not talk to him now. She had seemed strange ever since she agreed to come to this trip. She didn’t look at him, or talk to him. She acted quite strange and he didn’t know why.

“I finished packing my things.” Ariel had announced half an hour after she agreed to going to Egypt.

“Well, that’s...that’s great!” Joe smiled up at her. His smile quickly turned to a frown when he saw the expression on her face.

“What happened?” He asked cautiously.

“Ohh...nothing.” Ariel beamed at him.

‘Probably not nothing.’ He thought to himself slowly. ‘Probably something big.’ He sighed.

“Will you help me pack?” He asked her politely, half expecting the answer.

“Sure.” She said not even looking at him, then she marched into his room. Joe stood open-mouthed. She agreed for this too? She agreed to help him pack? Was something wrong with her?

“Joe! Come in here, I don’t know where everything is!” Ariel called out from his room fifteen minutes later.

“Coming!” Joe got up when a suddenly something tugged at his heart. ‘Darling.’ He whispered and smiled at himself.

“Joe!” Ariel called again.

Joe couldn’t stop grinning; he went into the room and leaned against the door. He was tempted to say ‘Yes, my love?’ But settled for...

“What’s the problem?”

“Where are your clothes?”

“Erm...in the cupboard across you.” Joe pointed at the cupboard frowning.

“Well, they aren’t in there.”

“What?!” Joe asked, his frown growing deep.

“Check for yourself...” Ariel suggested.

Joe walked over to his cupboard and opened it quickly. He looked at it aghast. The cupboard which was once full with jackets, suits, shirts and trousers, was now completely empty! All he could see were his drawers which were untouched. Except for one of them, which had moved slightly an inch from where it was before.

Joe, being a neat freak, quickly adjusted the underwear to its rightful place. Looked at it for a second or two to admire his work, happy that order had once again been restored to his drawers, and then turned around and returned to his state of fury and confusion.

“Where...what...how...when...”

“I don’t know...I don’t know...I don’t know...I don’t know...”

“Where have they gone?” Joe asked her in a very calm tone. It was clearly obvious she had done something to his clothes. The last time he checked his clothes were in place, and when he comes back home, BAM! His clothes are gone!

“Well, hmm...you must have misplaced them.” Ariel replied innocently.

“All of them?” He asked patiently.

“Well, you are kind of...you know...stupid.” Ariel sighed.

Joe refused to reply. He simply had to look for his clothes. They were leaving for Egypt the next day, and he wasn’t going to explore the mysterious country in his underwear.

He searched his entire house and turned the place upside down with a heavy heart. He was, after all, a neat freak. Seeing his house in this state of mess, broke his heart and made him want to weep.

An hour or so had passed, and the house was in complete disarray. Realization dawned on him. His clothes were in his cupboard when he had left, and then Ariel went into his room and they were gone! She hadn’t come out at all for fifteen minutes, and then she called out for him! Obviously the clothes were in his bedroom!

He rummaged through all his belongings in the bedroom. After that too, was turned into rubbish, he gave up and sat on his bed. He wondered what he would have to do, to get all his clothes back from Ariel. He had packing to do, and this wasn’t funny at all!

He groaned and lied on his back. Something was wrong. He was dead sure, his clothes were in the bedroom! Unless of course...

‘Naah! She wouldn’t do that!’

Joe smiled at the stupid thought.

‘No she never would do that!’

Maybe...

‘Oh my God! She threw my clothes out of the window!’ Joe gasped and ran downstairs to retrieve his clothes.

When he got down however, there were no clothes. Worried, Joe asked a passerby if he had seen any clothes lying around. When the passerby said he hadn’t, Joe returned into the house relieved that none of his clothes had touched the dirty floor outdoors.

Although, there was a big puncture to his relief, when he realized he still hadn’t found his clothes and it was already seven O’clock. He had to pack, and the flight was of twelve O’ clock that night.

“Ariel...where are my clothes?” Joe smiled at her sweetly, and tried to sound as nice as was possible at the moment.

“I...don’t...know.” Ariel smiled back and spoke with a sweeter voice.

“Well, the clothes were in the room when I left it, and weren’t when you went in. Where do you think they went?”

“Maybe Harry Potter came flying on his broom stick, and swept away your clothes.”

“Or maybe...” Joe tried to be patient but was failing miserably. “...maybe, you took them, and hid...” Suddenly another thought occurred to Joe.

He ran into his bedroom, threw out the mattress and opened the little trap door, that covered the hollow under his bed. There they were! Lying in disarray, all his clothes, including suits and all, in the hollow beneath his bed.

“Well, I guess you found them, eh?” Ariel smiled at him leaning on the doorway. “Well, listen, I’m tired after all my packing, and I’m going to turn in early. I’ll wake up in time for the flight, till then, happy packing!”

Whatever the case was, Joe refused to sit quiet for 24 hours when there was a perfectly good chat mate next to him.

“Ariel...” Joe called out softly.

There was no reply. But Joe knew Ariel was listening. He was hurt that Ariel wouldn’t even bother to act as though she were asleep. She was just looking out of the window.

“Ariel?” He called again. Once more there was a little temptation in his heart, to call her...’darling.’

‘Ariel darling...’ Joe thought with a smile. He looked up at Ariel with a smile, which quickly turned to a frown, as she was still looking out of the window.

“You know Ariel...” Joe said seriously. “If the plane crashes, and we die, then I want you to know...I’m happy I married you...because then I wouldn’t die a single man.” He turned away pretending to wipe a tear from his eye, when in fact, he was laughing.

“What!” Ariel gasped and turned around to face Joe. Joe smirked at his idea and continued to look depressed. “What do you mean if the plane crashes? The plane won’t crash! It won’t!”

“Well these days, planes are crashing left and right. If you’re not careful, it may just crash right next to where you’re sitting in the park. These days, people don’t use planes unless they really have to, or unless they want to die. It’s the quickest form of suicide.” How he could say all this with a straight face was beyond him. But he was impressed with himself.

“Yea right! You’re lying! I don’t believe you.”

“Yes well, that’s because you are new to this. I’ve sat on planes before, and if you ask me, the plane isn’t worth riding on if it hadn’t crashed once or twice, and knocked over a building or two.”

“Wha...really?” Ariel asked seeming worried.

“Yes! It’s very unfortunate. Some die, some just get injured, some are unharmed. I’ve been one of those lucky ones, as you can see.” He gave a toothy smile at this statement.

“How...how did you live on?”

“Well, I normally had one of the centre seats.” Joe sighed.

“Ahan! We’re in luck! This is the centre seat!”

“No...I mean...erm...centre in U.S. A, we’re in the centre in Taiwan. Not U.S.A.”

“There’s a...?”

“Anyway the one thing, to preventing it, I’ve heard, is talking to each other...it works miracles. It’s saved lives of many.”

“But...but the others aren’t talking...” Ariel said looking around. “...I do not believe you!”

“They’re...erm...they’re mourning for all those who are about to die.” Joe said triumphantly. He knew his plan had worked because Ariel had started talking to him throughout the flight. He smirked at his own intelligence.
