Chapter 3

A New Found Family

~At the hospital~

The next day, Ruby opened her eyes and sat up straight. Her aching head was spinning. Every time she tried to remember her past it would get worse.

Soon Joyce entered the room. "Ah! Good morning Ruby! I see you're finally up," greeted Joyce.

"Yeah, I guess I am," replied Ruby. "What time is it?"

"Almost noon! Boy for just a little girl you sure love your sleep!" laughed Joyce. "When I tried to wake you, you threatened to bite me."

Ruby forced a smile. "Miss…umm Tang…is it??" she asked.

"Yeah, but call me Joyce, Miss Tang sounds so old! I'm only 16 you know!" continued Joyce.

"Alright, Joyce do you know what actually happened to me?" asked Ruby.

"Well, there was a car crash on the main highway, when investigators arrived, they had discovered you in one on the cargo crates in the truck." answered Joyce. "Ruby, what were you doing in there??" she asked.

"I don't remember! The only thing I remember was waking up and finding myself here. I tried to remember things but my head keeps hurting," replied Ruby.

"Do you remember your parents? Your family?" asked Joyce.

"Nope, all I can remember is that I have nobody now and that nobody cares for me anymore and that I'm an orphan now!" answered Ruby ready to burst into tears.

"It's okay Ruby let it all out! Cry all you want! You know crying helps," comforted Joyce. Ruby calmed down a bit. "You know you're a lot like me, I'm an orphan too! And I live and grew up in the Chan Orphanage. Do you know where that is?" asked Joyce.

Ruby shook her head.

"You were talking about it yesterday, you said you belonged there now. Have you ever been there before? Do you know anyone their?" asked Joyce.

Ruby shrugged her shoulders.

"Hmm….." thought Joyce.

A doctor enters. "Joyce does the girl remember anything?"

"No doctor, she just remembers the same information as yesterday," replied Joyce. "Did you find any record that may belong to her?" asked Joyce.

"No, there is no one named Ruby Lin, who is a female 10 year old in Hong Kong," replied the doctor.

"No family?" asked Joyce, "Is she an orphan?"

"She may be. I guess you have a new member added into your family now Joyce. Do you think Benny will mind?" asked the doctor.

"Of course not Uncle Benny runs the orphanage, he never refuses anyone, not even me," joked Joyce trying to lighten up the mood.

"Alright come with me and get the papers for this young lady here to be put in the orphanage," replied the doctor looking at Ruby.

"Okay, Ruby I'm going to go with Dr. Zhou here, I'll be right back alright??" explained Joyce.

Ruby just nodded. Somehow she felt glad to be put in an orphanage, but at the same time she felt scared. Ruby slowly got out of bed to enter the bathroom. She looked into the mirror. The child in the mirror was like a stranger, Ruby didn't even recognize her own reflection. She wished she could remember what her family was like. All of a sudden her head started to hurt again. She held her head in her hands and started rubbing it to ease the pain. She then noticed something hanging off her neck, it was a heart-shaped locket with the letter R engraved on it. She opened it up and saw the girl in the mirror (her reflection), a pretty lady, a good looking man and another little girl who looked quite familiar. Was this her family? Looking at the picture eased her pain greatly.

~Half an Hour Later~

"Ruby, I'm back," greeted Joyce. "Now I'm going to take you to my house now, okay?"

Ruby just nodded.

"First we have to go down the hall and pick up a friend of mine, I think she's about your age," announced Joyce.

Ruby just nodded again, she didn't feel like talking at the moment. She was too nervous, what if the other kids don't like her?

The walked down the hall and entered a room. In a chair by the bed you can see a little girl, with long black hair and a friendly smile. Seeing this girl smile caused Ruby to smile.

"Joyce!" screamed the girl in excitement.

"Hey Jesse," greeted Joyce. "Jesse this is Ruby she's going to come live with us at the orphanage."

"HI!" exclaimed Jesse as she embraced Ruby with a hug.

"Hi, I'm Ruby Lin," she introduced with an adorable smile.

"Jessica Hsuan at your service miss Lin," answered Jesse with a gentlemen's bow.

Ruby giggled at her silliness.

"Ruby this is my grandma!" said Jesse pointing at the elderly lady lying on the bed.

"Hi," said Ruby politely.

"Oh what a pretty little lady," answered Grandma Hsuan.

Ruby smiled.

"Grandma Hsuan, it's time for me to take Jesse back to the orphanage, I'll bring her back to visit soon," said Joyce.

"Alright, thank you dear for bringing her to visit me," thanked the gentle woman.

"No problem, if I didn't she would have been nagging me all day and night," chuckled Joyce.

"That's my grand-daughter for you," smiled Grandma Hsuan.

"Good Bye, Grandma Hsuan, I hope you feel better soon!" said Ruby waving good bye.

"Good Bye sweetie! Good bye Jessica," said the Grandma Hsuan, "Look out for your new friend," she reminded Jessica.

"Don't worry I will!" said Jessica, "Take care, I'll be back soon."

Joyce walked the two girls home, but stopped to pick up something special.

~Yang Mansion~

"Ruby where are you?? Please come home!" sighed Kristy, while in her room admiring Ruby's things.

Ding Dong! Rang the door bell.

Kristy raced downstairs to see who it was. Maybe Ruby had come home. She approached the door and turned the knob and swung the door opened, "RUBY I MISSED YOU SO…oh it's just you," she starred at the person in front of her.

"What do you mean it's just you! That's a great way to greet one of your best friends," he scolds.

"I'm her best friend, stupid! You're just my ugly older brother, who has no friends!! " screamed Gigi running in from the gates.

"GIGI!! You're finally back!!" yelled Kristy happily. She' hasn't laughed or smiled in days.

"We'd eventually be back you know, school starts in two weeks!" retorted Alec.

"Shut up Alec, don't be smart!" yelled Gigi. "Oh Kristy I missed you two so much," as she hugged Kristy, "where's Ruby?"

The smile on Kristy's faced disappeared immediately at the mention of Ruby's name. Kristy couldn't hold back her tears anymore. She couldn't stay strong anymore. Tears started running down her cheeks. Tears that she's been holding in ever since Ruby disappeared. She didn't want to worry her father.

Gigi noticed the expression on Kristy's face and asked, "What happened?"

"They probably got into a fight!" declared Alec.

"WILL YOU SHUT UP!" screamed Gigi.

Alec pouted and was silent.

"Ruby's…Ruby's not here," sobbed Kristy.

Alec was now interested in what's going on. He paid close attention to Kristy's expression, he knew something was terribly wrong.

"Shh! Kristy don't cry, calm down, Shh! It's alright. Tell me what happened. Where's Ruby?" Gigi tried to comfort.

"Ruby…she…she ran away!" cried Kristy bursting into tears.

"SHE WHAT???" exclaimed both Alec and Gigi. Gigi was stunned she didn't know what to say. She felt tears going down her cheek.

Alec felt an aching pain in his heart. He too felt like crying. He swallowed his pain and asked, "Why?"

Kristy explained the entire situation to Alec and Gigi.

"She can't be far!" exclaimed Alec, "How far can she go with only $35.87?"

"Actually she has $156.25," replied Kristy. "She only took $35.87 from me, she took $40 from my dad, and the rest is hers."

"Still she can't be far!" argued Alec. "She may still be around! I'm going to look for her!"

The three kids went in search of Ruby. They searched high and low but no sign of their friend.

~The Chan Orphanage~

"HELLO! PEOPLE I’M HOME!" shouted Jessica as they stepped into the large orphanage.

The place looked beautiful, it was the perfect place for kids. Everything was colorful and happy.

A bunch of kids ran to greet them, wearing Birthday hats. Behind them was a man in his early thirties, wearing a clown costume.

The man looked at Ruby and said, "Hi, You must be Ruby. Aren't you an adorable little girl. I'm Benny Chan! You can call me Uncle Benny. Today is another little girl's birthday, Ruby would you like to join our party?"

Ruby looked up at this Uncle Benny, he seemed nice enough. She nodded.

Throughout the entire party she looked for the Birthday girl, but couldn't find her. Ruby passed by the coat closet, she heard someone crying. She opened the door and found a cute little girl with large round eyes and pig tails, crying her eyes out. Ruby approached her and asked, "Why are you crying?"

The girl looked up and saw Ruby, she studied Ruby's features carefully. Ruby had beautiful eyes, cute dimples and an adoring friendly smile. The girl stopped crying and starred at Ruby.

"Are you alright??" Ruby asked again.

The girl nodded.

"Then why are you crying? It's a party, you're suppose to have fun! You're going to make the Birthday Girl sad if she sees you like this!" said Ruby shaking her finger trying to imitate the adults.

The girl chuckled a little. "Are you new here?" she asked.

"WOW! How did you know? Are you a psycho?" Ruby asked in amazement.

The girl laughed again, "It's not psycho it's psychic!"

"Whatever, doesn't matter, I made you smile didn't I?" Ruby exclaimed.

"You're funny!" the girl pointed out.

"NO! I'm Ruby, not funny, I'm Ruby Lin!" Ruby introduced herself.

"Alright Ruby, I'm Vicky, Vicky Zhao," she said with a smile.

"So Vicky, are you going to tell me why you were crying or do I have to tickle you to get the answer?" Ruby threatened.

"NO! Anything but that!" declared Vicki.

"Okay, so talk!" demanded Ruby.

"Today's my 10th birthday! I've only been here for two months. My parents died in a car accident three months ago, and I was in a comma for one entire month, that's thirty days, you know," Vicki paused, "Ever since I came here I always kept quiet, and never played or made friends with anybody. I want to be there friend but they say I'm weird and don't want to play with me. The only person who tries to play with me is Jesse, but she always gets pulled away, because everyone likes her." Tears began to run down her cheek. "My mom and dad left me alone! No one loves me! No one even cares for me. This is suppose to be my party and nobody notices that I'm missing!" cried Ruby.

"Don't worry Vicki, don't cry! I know how you feel. I just woke up last night and found out I was found at the scene of a car crash. Nobody knows who my family is. I don't even remember them. When I woke up all I could remember was my name being Ruby Lin, and that no one loves me anymore, and that I'm an orphan," said Ruby in a sad tone.

"So you don't remember anything else?" asked Vicki.

"Nope, every time I try my head hurts. The doctors say I got Imneeshea!" said Ruby.

"You got what??? Oh amnesia!" replied Vicki.

"That's what I said Imneeshea!" Ruby explained.

Vicki laughed again.

"Vicki?" called Ruby.

"Hmmm?" she asked.

"Don't worry, I'm your friend now!" replied Ruby happily.

"Thank you Ruby!" cried Vicki, but now these were tears of joy.

The closet door opened, a very tanned boy named Louis yelled, "Uncle Benny I've found the new girl and the cry baby!"

Vicki's eyes were all puffy from crying, she just kept her head down to ashamed to look up. Ruby just gave him an evil glare. Pretty soon everyone was by the closet. The girls were told to come out. Everyone starred at Vicki with her puffy pink eyes.

Someone whispered to Ruby, "Hey new girl, you better stay away from her all she ever does is cry!"

Vicki now thinking that she has just lost another possible friend looked down and began crying.

"Vicki dear, stop crying it's your birthday!" said Benny trying to calm her down.

Ruby didn't want to see Vicki cried so she said loudly, "Excuse me!"

Everyone looked at her, including Vicki, curiously.

Out of nowhere Ruby began dancing and singing, "It's my party and I'll cry if I want to! Cry if I want to!"

Everyone starred at her as if she was a freak! Jessica then started singing and dancing with Ruby, "IT'S MY PARTY AND I'LL CRY IF I WANT TO! CRY IF I WANT TO!"

"Now there are two dancing and singing freaks!" yelled Louis.

Vicki began laughing and laughing she couldn't stop. Ruby looked at Jessica and exchanged glances, they both pulled Vicki and made her dance too! Eventually Vicki began dancing willingly, she even started singing.

"Not two, THREE!" yelled his cute short friend, named Dicky.

"I guess this place isn't going to have another second of peace, not with these three girls," sighed Benny.

"No daddy, you're wrong!," said Benny's daughter Annie.

"Huh?" he asked.

"It's not three singing freaks it's four!" she exclaimed.

Benny looked up it was still only Ruby, Jessica and Vicki dancing, he looked at his daughter and asked, "What?" The next thing he knew Annie started dancing and singing too! "HUH?? ANNIE???" he asked.

"There goes the neighborhood!" Benny sighed once again.

"Oh poor Uncle Benny, these girls are going to be a handful," Joyce pointed out while recording the entire thing.

Everyone had a blast that night especially the four singing freaks. None of them would ever forget that night.

~In Taiwan~

Twisting and turning in her bed, Kristy tried but couldn't get to sleep. Everything in her room reminded her of Ruby, even the room itself reminded her of Ruby. It happens every night. Kristy would cry herself to sleep. She tried sleeping in the guest rooms but still somehow everything would remind her of Ruby. This entire house did that to her.

On this particular night, she had more on her mind. Ruby was right. There father doesn't love their mother or even them anymore. He's getting married tomorrow, and going on a one month honeymoon. Where does it leave Kristy? Home alone and during the first month of school. How can he do that to her? Kristy knew her father loved her dearly, but he shows his feelings with gifts and money now, not with quality time together. Her mother always spent quality time with them and they'd always have fun and end up laughing non-stop. Things are so different now. Things would've been fine if Ruby was still around, only her reasoning got through Ted's thick head. Even if he left for a month at least she'd have her sister, but now she'll be left alone to face life by herself.

Now, more than ever Kristy felt alone. Everybody's left her, her mother, her father who seemed to care but had a hard way to express himself, even her best friend, her sister abandoned her. She just wants give up now, but she can't she promised her mother to look after her father and Ruby. She's lost Ruby, all she can do for her mother is watch after her father. Even if he already has Stacey.

~The Wedding Day~

"I do," said Stacey happily.

"I now pronounce you man and wife, you may now kiss the bride," announced the priest.

They kissed. Stacey and Ted ran to their limo. Stacey threw the bouquet, and it landed on Alec's lap. A swarm of Kristy's female friends chased after him.

Ted approached Kristy and said, "Kristy, honey take care, I'll be back soon okay?"

Kristy just nodded.

The newly wedded couple soon headed to the airport.

Kristy had arrangements to stay at the Su household for that month. It was better than being alone, and she did have Gigi. When she's with Gigi she'd forget about all her problems for that moment.

That night Kristy was chatting with Gigi in her room. They played Truth or Dare.

"Okay, Kristy what is it do you fear most?" asked Gigi.

"I hate thunder storms! I hate thunder!" Kristy answered simply.

"OOOOOO too bad, it's raining pretty hard right now," teased Gigi.

"Stop it quit teasing me!" demanded Kristy.

"Alright! Alright!" chuckled Gigi.

All of a sudden lightning flashed across the sky. Kristy knew what came next.

Her entire life Ruby was always by her side, they'd protect each other, have fun together, talk together, and have deep conversations together. They both were afraid of thunder storms. Whenever there was a storm they'd cuddle up together.

"BOOM!"

"AHHHHHHH!" Kristy screamed with all her might. She hid under the covers with Gigi, shivering. Every time there was a loud noise Kristy would scream and squeeze Gigi's hand. They both eventually fell asleep. By morning Gigi's hand was all red and sore.

"Ummm…sorry?" smiled Kristy innocently when she saw Gigi's hand.

~Back with Ruby~

"Morning girls," greeted Benny.

Vicki yawned and said in a sleepy tone, "Morning uncle Benny…or are you Joyce?"

Annie walked down to the kitchen and bumped into the wall. "Ouch!" she shrieked. "Sorry sir, or madam."

Jessica came down with bags under her eyes, she looked like a zombie.

Ruby also came down, she seemed quite normal, she sat on her chair and started eating her breakfast.

"Whoa! Vicki, Jesse, Annie what happened?" asked Benny.

They all pointed to Ruby eating quietly behind the cereal box.

"She was jumping around all night, from one bed to another!" exclaimed Jessica.

"She's terrified of thunder storms," explained Annie, talking to the bowl of fruit.

All of a sudden they all heard a growling noise, they turned to Ruby, and she had fallen asleep in her bowl of cereal.

"Daddy, let's get our room sound proofed!" pleaded Annie still talking to the bowl of fruit.

Louis and Dicky soon entered the kitchen.

"AHHHHHHHH!" screamed Dicky, "There's a monster!" pointing at Jessica.

Louis took a closer look, "Nope it's just Jesse! Hahaha!"

"Shut up," yelled Jessica.

Louis grabbed an apple from the bowl and took a bite out of it.

"AHHHHHHH!" screamed Annie as she started slapping Louis.

"What did I do?" exclaimed Louis.

"You…YOU BIT MY DADDY'S HAND!" cried Annie.

"I what??" asked Louis. "Since when was your dad's hand an apple?? And why would it be in the fruit bowl???"

"Oh my bad!" said Annie calming down realizing that she's been talking to a bowl of fruit for the last 10 minutes.

The screaming startled Ruby, "What?!!??" she said softly. "Kris, turn off that alarm clock!" Ruby mumbled to herself as she fell asleep in her bowl of cereal again.

"Girls why don't you go back to bed," suggested Benny.
