Chapter 4

The New Girl

~HONG KONG~

"I heard there's going to be a new girl transferred to our orphanage," whispered one girl.

"Yeah, I heard they had to transfer her over here because she always picked fights with people, and they call her the Mean Queen. They say she's really mean and cruel," said another person.

"I heard that she doesn't want to be adopted, so who ever comes for her, she'd scare them away!" said another person.

"Well I heard she's really pretty!" exclaimed Louis.

"You people judge people way to quick!" snapped Ruby. "Give them a chance they can surprise you, you know?" she said while looking at Vicki, Jessica and Annie.

Ruby's POV

Vicki has really opened up in the past 2 months, Jess says that she's a completely new person now. She's not the same girl I met crying in the closet. She's become more confident, there is a sense of courage in her, and a lot more independence. Everyone loves seeing her smile, because her smile brought a smile onto everyone else's face. Annie says that I must've rubbed some of my cheerfulness off on her. I've noticed that Vicki is a very hot headed person, and can be very stubborn.

I turned to look at Jessica and smiled, Jesse's always so out going , so fun to be with, yet there is a sense of innocence and sweetness in her, which reminds me of someone I once knew. Jesse's the type of person that when your with them your troubles and worries seem to just disappear.

Then there's Annie. What can I say that girl always has a smile on her face. She's so innocent, so carefree, so naive and always so happy. It seems like nothing can bring her down.

I don't get it why does everyone think we're all too straight forward?? And sometimes rude? We're only 10, what do you expect? Do they want us to lie? See, everyone said that I taught them how to be rude, because I use too much sarcasm that it makes my comments sound rude and ill-mannered. They say I'm to wild. WILD can you believe that? What do I look like a caveman? That's who I am. I'm me. What do they expect?? Perfect little angels??

END Ruby' POV

Mr. Lam soon arrived at the orphanage with the new girl. Mr. Lam was the chairman of all the orphanages in Hong Kong. What he says goes. When he arrived at the door, Ruby noticed him limping. Ruby noticed the girl standing near him, she looked as cold as ice, but still beautiful, well as beautiful as a 10 year old can get. She noticed that she was secretly glaring at Mr. Lam with satisfaction written all over her face. Ruby instantly knew that Mr. Lam was limping because of this girl. She tried to hold in her giggles, but couldn't control herself. It's not like Ruby to laugh at other people's misfortunes, but she knew that he probably deserved it. She knew Mr. Lam wasn't a good man.

Ruby's giggles soon caught the attention of Mr. Lam and everybody else at the scene, which wasn't unusual, she loved being the centre of attention.

"Excuse me young lady, what do you find so funny?" he asked sternly.

"Oh nothing sir, its just that I saw a limping dog pass by," Ruby answered coolly.
Giggles could be heard throughout the room. The new girl looked at Ruby as if she was impressed by her guts to speak to Mr. Lam in such a manner. A smile appeared on her face.

"What is your name, young lady?" asked Mr. Lam.

"Oh so do you want to know my first name, my middle name, my last name, my nick names, my full name or my first and last name or…" Ruby was cut off.

"Just tell me your name!" demanded Mr. Lam.

"That was awfully rude of you sir. My name sir, is Ruby Lin," answer Ruby in a goofy way.

"Well Miss Lin, do you find other people's misfortunes humorous?" he asked.

"Oh no sir! Only when I think they deserved it!" answered Ruby calmly.

"So, you are saying that I deserve to be limping?" he asked angrily.

"Oh no sir I never said that! I said I was laughing at a limping dog!" explained Ruby. "Sir are you comparing yourself to a limping dog?" Ruby asked covering her mouth to hide her smile.

Everyone in the room bursted out laughing. Including Benny.

"LIN ARE YOU TRYING TO MAKE A FOOL OUT OF ME??" yelled Mr. Lam.

"What gave you that idea sir? You're doing it all by yourself!" replied Ruby innocently.

"CHAN! ARE YOU GOING TO LET HER SPEAK TO ME LIKE THAT?" screamed Mr. Lam.

"Of course not sir! Annie, Jesse, Vicki take Ruby to her room and…umm…keep her in there till further notice!" ordered Benny. When the girls walked by, Benny winked at Annie signaling her to get Ruby out of there quickly.

As the four girls exited the room trying to hide their smiles, Ruby passed by the new girl and smiled at her, she smiled back. The girls ran upstairs into their room.

There were many rooms in the orphanage, big rooms, so each room can properly fit up to 3 beds. The girls stayed in one of the biggest rooms in the house, which can fit 4 beds no problem. It can even fit another bed. They even had room for two study tables and had a humongous closet.

Annie slammed the door shut, and started laughing like crazy. Vicki laughed so hard she had to lean on the wall for support, she eventually was lying on the floor banging the floor and laughing at the same time. Jessica fell on the bed, knocking over her lamp causing it to hit the ground and shatter into pieces, laughing like a crazy donkey.

Downstairs, the sounds of banging and something being broken was heard.

Louis asked his friend Dicky, "What's going on up there?"

Benny shook his head, sighed and smiled.

Teresa looked shocked. "How can they be so cruel?? Poor girl!" she thought.

Mr. Lam had a triumphant smirk on his face. He thought Ruby was getting her punishment at that very moment. "Alright, as I was trying to say before, this is Teresa Mak, she's been transferred here. Treat her as if she's one of your friends. Chan if she gives you any trouble, you can do the same as you did to Miss Lin."

Teresa didn't like the smirk on his face. He wants these people to torture her, just because she didn't obey him, and kicked his leg causing him to limp. Teresa thought up of something to get him back. She suddenly screamed, "AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"

The girls all peeked out of their room to see what the commotion was.

"What's wrong?" asked Mr. Lam with his fake concern.

"THERE'S A BUG!!!" she shrieked.

"Where?" he asked.

Teresa smiled and said, "On your shoe!" as she stomped on his limping foot.

Everyone gasped at Teresa's actions.

"AWWWWWW!" screamed Mr. Lam in pain. "WHY YOU LITTLE……" he said as he razed his hand to slap her.

"Mr. Lam, didn't you say you had to…ummm…had to go somewhere now?" interrupted Benny.

Mr. Lam froze, and remembered, "Ah, yes Benny my boy, I have a ball to attend!" he replied. Everyone one was relived until he continued, "But I want to see her disciplined first!" he pointed to Teresa.

"I…umm…" began Benny, trying to stall.

Upstairs Ruby, Vicki, Jessica and Annie were listening in. They knew that something must be done, and quickly. Jesse came up with a plan. Jesse, Vicki and Annie went downstairs.

"Chan, you're driving my patience. Discipline the girl and be done with it. Let me have my revenge, or do you want me to do it myself!" asked Mr. Lam. "I can easily close this orphanage down you know?" he continued.

"Sir……I……ummm," he began.

"No daddy let me, Jessie and Vicki take her upstairs and give her, her just deserves," answered Annie as she entered the room.

"Let her come with us upstairs to keep Ruby company!" announced Vicki as she winked at Benny.

"Oh!" said Benny, "Alright, I'll leave it to you three!"

"A terrific idea!" exclaimed Mr. Lam.

"Mr. Lam, please take a seat and relax while we take care of our new friend," smiled Jessica.

"Thank you dear. Chan you sure know how to raze children, but I think you should spend more time discipline that Ruby Lin." Mr. Lam complemented, "I think Teresa is left in the right hands."

Vicki and Jesse dragged Teresa up the stairs while Annie cleared the way. "HEY LET GO OF ME! YOU CAN'T DO THIS TO ME! WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE? LET GO OF ME! I'M JUST A KID! I'M ONLY 10 YEARS OLD! LET ME GO!" Teresa screamed.

"WILL YOU BE QUIET?!" snapped Vicki.

"No V, let her scream all she wants," replied Jessica.

"What?" Vicki asked.

"The louder it is the more fun it'll be!" giggled Annie.

"Oh I see!" answered Vicki, she looked at Teresa and gave her a smile that sent chills down her spine.

"HELP! HELP ME! THESE GIRLS ARE CRAZY! I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING WRONG! HELP!" Teresa screamed again.

The girls just giggled. They reached their room and dragged Teresa into the room and once again Annie slammed the door.

Everything then went silent.

Mr. Lam looked up at Benny about to ask what was going on but all of a sudden "CRASH!"

"Oh no, something else broke," mumbled Benny.

Then it sounded like people were running, and then beating noises were heard, then a scream followed by complete silence.

Mr. Lam stood up with a satisfied look on his face. "Well I better get going, take care Chan. Keep up the good work," he said simply as he headed for the door, still limping.

"He's gone!" Benny yelled up.

~In the Room~

Annie slammed the door.

"What do you want with me?" asked Teresa with fear in her voice.

The three girls just smiled. Someone came up from behind Teresa and tapped her shoulder. Teresa slowly turned around and came face to face with Ruby. "It's you!" she exclaimed.

"Ssshhh!" said Ruby, "Just play along!"

Annie then threw a vase across the room and shattered it into a million pieces. Jessica and Vicki started to run around the room. Ruby joined them, pulling along Teresa. Ruby then signaled everyone to stop. Annie picked up a baseball bat and started hitting the bed creating the sound of a beating. She purposely hit the hardwood floor a couple times to indicate that she missed. While Annie took one last swing at the bed, Teresa screamed with all her might.

The girls were then silent. Not long after, they heard Benny scream up, "He's gone!"

The five girls broke out into laughter that could've been heard throughout the entire house.

Louis and Dicky ran to the room. "Bravo, an excellent performance! You should win an Emmy!" applaud Dicky.
"You guys really had me for a minute," exclaimed Louis.

"Do we look like guys to you?" snapped Ruby.

"Okay, my bad, you girls really scared me for a minute," corrected Louis.

"Oh so we scared you did we?" asked Jessica.

"Aww poor Louis was so scared he wet his pants," Vicki pointed out. Louis' pants were wet.

"I didn't pee in my pants! It's just that I spilled orange juice on it this morning. Tell them Dicky." explained Louis.

"I didn't see nothing man," replied Dicky.

Louis looked as if he was going to explode.

"Awww it's okay Louis, it was just an act. We won't scare you anymore!" promised Annie.

"Louis, Christmas is one month away, I'll get you Pull-Ups for Christmas, okay?" replied Ruby.

"WHY I OUGHT A…" exclaimed Louis.

"Louis, boys aren't suppose to hit girls, it's a rule! So…" said Ruby sticking her tongue out at him.

"I'm going to get you Ruby!" exclaimed Louis.

"Nobody invited you boys in, so get out!" yelled Vicki.

"HEY! What about me?" asked Dicky.

"Hmmmmm…NOPE! Sorry, we're going to have a girl chat right now and do girlie things," answered Vicki.

"BUT…" said Dicky.

"DADDY DICKY SAID A BAD WORD!" screamed Annie. As Ruby shooed them out.

"No I didn't all I said was but!' he complained.

"HE SAID IT AGAIN!" yelled Jessica.

"Hey where do you think you're going?" asked Ruby.

"Oh Ruby I've always known you loved me! They're trying to kick me out..." complained Dicky.

"Not you! Teresa," snapped Ruby as she pulled Teresa back into the room.

"Oh you guys said you wanted to have a girl chat, I didn't want to intrude, so I…ummm," replied Teresa.

"NONSENSE!" shouted Jessica.

"You're one of us now!" said Vicki excitedly.

"Yup all for one and one for all!" exclaimed Annie.

"Annie, you're so corny!" laughed Ruby.

"I am? You guys want to be my friends? Didn't you hear the rumors about me? Aren't you afraid of me? I'm…I'm rude and mean and," announced Teresa.

"Why should we be afraid of you?" asked Ruby. "You're not rude or mean to us. You were nice enough to warn us about yourself, you don't seem that bad," declared Ruby.

"So you're not afraid of me?" asked Teresa.

"NOPE!" announce the four girls.

Teresa began crying, "I never had actual friends before!"

"Awww, don't cry!" said Vicki, "Or Louis will start calling you a cry baby!"

"Then I'll kick him!" announced Teresa.

The girls laughed.

Benny had brought another bed into the bedroom for Teresa, they were all roommates and best friends starting from that day.
