Killing Me Softly

Chapter 1: The Email

In the large, warm, stuffy, humid, office, all was silent, except for the tapping of keyboards of the busy workers, and the constant ringing of the phones, at the three heads of customer service’s table. It was always busy on Friday afternoons, but today was even busier, everyone was instructed to keep busy, or at least try to.

At a little cozy desk in front of the co-executive office, a young below average looking woman, with large thick black glasses, pale skin, no-make up, with hair tied back in a messy bun. Her glasses sat at the tip of her nose, as if she didn’t need them. She was busily typing away on her computer, absorbed in writing her email. She was biting her bottom lip.

Email read:

Pearl, Jade, Emerald, and Sapphire,

Went shopping seven days ago. Bought couple OUTingSKIRTS. Neighbor, she abandoned me. There was warehouse sale across the street. Clothes very important to me. Very big meeting now. I going late. Grammar bad today. Hehehhe…

Love always,

Ruby

“Waw! You really do have bad grammar!” exclaimed a gentle male voice. “I sure hope the letters I asked you to type up this morning doesn’t sound like that,” he laughed.

Ruby was startled. She looked up, and saw her boss, “Mr. Lin, I…I…What are you doing here?” she asked.

“Ms. Lin, how many times have I told you already?” he asked. “You’ve been here a month, I must’ve told you everyday, call me Jimmy.”

“Alright, Jimmy, what are you doing here?” she asked trying to sound professional.

“Well just checking on my favorite secretary,” announced Jimmy, looking over her shoulder and re-reading her email. “Waw, this sounds like something my six year old niece would write,” he laughed.

Ruby blushed.

“Ruby? Who’s Ruby?” he asked.

“That…that’s my screen name,” replied Ruby.

“Ruby, Ruby, Ruby,” he repeated. “That name sounds like a name of a beauty,” he announced. He looked at her, trying to look beyond her glasses and pale skin, trying to look into her eyes.

Ruby looked away not wanting him to stare at her like that, “Boss, what are you looking at?” she asked.

“Just thinking how you’d look without those glasses, with your hair down, and in more feminine clothing,” he said still staring at her intently. “You know, you wouldn’t look half bad.”

“Do I really look that bad?” she asked.

Jimmy shook his head, “But I think you can look a lot better,” he replied.

“Listen Mr. Lin, I don’t tell you how to dress or how to look, you shouldn’t be telling me how I should look. Some of us weren’t born perfect like supermodels, and you. People like me know their place. I don’t want to be a wanna be,” she replied.

“Ruby…I didn’t mean that,” answered Jimmy, sounding compassionate.

She was laughing inside. “Mr. Lin, my name is not Ruby, its Xin Ru,” replied Ruby.

“Alright, Xin Ru, I won’t call you Ruby anymore, if you don’t call me Mr. Lin,” he announced. “I really didn’t mean to offend you in any way.”

Ruby nodded.

“Shouldn’t you be working?” he asked pointing at the screen.

“I’m done,” she answered.

“You sure are fast, I’m going to run out of work to give you soon,” Jimmy laughed.

“Maybe you can try raising my salary,” Ruby suggested.

“We’ll see dear,” he said. “Sending emails?” he asked.

“Ya just keeping in touch with few friends online,” she answered clicking send. “You got a problem with that?”

Jimmy shook his head and chuckled, “And they don’t mind your hideous grammar? That they actually understand it?” he asked.

“They know me pretty well,” replied Ruby. “Besides, I have to write properly everyday, using proper grammar and junk, I need to be able to free myself and write rubbish, don’t you think?” she asked, trying to sound as logical as possible.

“Alright, let’s go Xin Ru, or we’re going to be late, the meeting is about to start,” Jimmy announced.

She pushed her chair back, accidentally crushing Jimmy’s foot.

“OUCH!” he exclaimed.

“I’m so sorry Boss,” she exclaimed, swinging her arm across the table accidentally knocking over all her documents off the table. “SHIT!” she exclaimed, looking at the mess she made.

“Xin Ru, its okay, get up,” he said grabbing her hand and pulling her up. He looked at her, “Let’s go.”

“Wait!” she said, picking up the documents, needed for their meeting. She grabbed her notepad and pen, so she could take notes.

They headed off to the room.

The room was very large, with plenty of fresh air, and large windows that looked down on the entire city.

“Xin Ru, start handing out the documents, make sure there is a copy in front of each desk,” announced Jimmy.

“Yes sir,” replied Ruby, she began handing out the documents.

“Call Lawyer Koo, from the fifth level to come up,” Jimmy told Erica, another secretary.

“Lawyer Koo?” she squealed.

Jimmy nodded.

“Yes sir, right away!” she exclaimed practically running out of the room.

“What’s with these girls and their infatuation of Louis?” Jimmy laughed to himself. “Eh...Xin Ru, do you know why all the girls love seeing Lawyer Koo, so much?”

“From what I’ve heard, Lawyer Koo is a very attractive man. With very fine skin. He has a very cool attitude. He’s mysterious, all the girls want to get to know him personally,” answered Ruby.

“How about you?” Jimmy asked.

“I don’t know, haven’t seen him yet,” replied Ruby.

“You seem to know a lot about Lawyer Koo, you hear it from the other girls?” Jimmy asked.

“What do you think they do in their spare time?” Ruby asked.

“So what do they say about me?” Jimmy asked.

“You want to know?” Ruby asked.

“Come on Xin Ru; tell me what do the others think of me?” Jimmy asked.

“Sweet, friendly, cute, adorable dimples, you got the cute look going, but people wonder why you change girlfriends every month?” answered Ruby. “They kinda question whether you’re straight or not.”

“They think I’m gay!” exclaimed Jimmy.

“I didn’t say anything, just passing along the rumors, remember boss, you never heard it from me, and if you decide to cut the salaries, remember I’m your friend,” Ruby said patting his back.

He nodded. “Well Lawyer Koo, changes his girl every night,” replied Jimmy.

“So it’s true?” Ruby asked.

Jimmy nodded, “Watch when he comes up, Erica will be smiling happily, because she has a date with him,” announced Jimmy.

“You seem confident,” said Ruby.

“I am,” replied Jimmy. “Wait and see.”

“Lawyer Koo,” Erica said knocking on the door.

“What is it?” a strong masculine voice answered.

“Mr. Lin, said the meeting is going to start soon,” replied Erica.

“Alright, let’s get going,” he answered.

They headed to the elevator. It opened.

As the doors opened, it revealed a stunning beauty, someone so different so unique, he’s never seen anyone like her before in his life. He smiled slyly, and stood closely beside her. Her hair was almost shoulder length. She was wearing a tight gray business suit skirt. He could see the curves of her body clearly. She carried a fancy black leather suitcase in her hands.

“Louis Koo,” he said, in his most charming voice.

She looked around, “You talking to me?” she asked coolly.

“Who else would I be talking to other than this magnificent beauty beside me?” he asked, looking at her.

She took one quick glance at him and looked away. He had neatly cut hair, he wore a charming olive green suit, and he carried a black, men’s suitcase. “Typical playboy type,” she muttered under her breath.

“Excuse me?” Louis asked.

She turned to look at him, “I said typical playboy type!” she repeated loudly.

“You say it as if you know me well,” Louis said whispering in her ears.

She turned and looked at him, there faces were inches apart. He was smirking at her. She placed her hand in between their faces, “You’re too close! I can’t breath! You’re making me nauseous!” she said pushing him away.

Louis almost fell over, “Watch it, even if you are rudely rejecting my friendship, no need to result in violence,” he announced. “Even if you are, I do deserve to know your name don’t I, so I can be careful next time. Put a name to your lovely face.”

“Call me what you want, it’s not like we’re ever going to see each other again,” she replied. “Even if we do, then it’s going to be against my will.” The elevator door opened. “This is my stop, good day,” she announced trying to leave.

Louis stopped her, blocking her way. “Come on tell me your name,” he said. “You know mine.”

She looked at him, and brushed his hand away from her, “I hope the door closes on your arm and breaks it,” she said walking out of the elevator.

“Don’t think so sweetheart!” he yelled to her, removing his hand for the door to close. He looked up at the elevator, “Floor 12,” he mumbled. “Aww Shit!” he exclaimed, sticking his arm in between the door. The door closed on his arm. “OUCH!” he screamed in pain.

“Lawyer Koo, you alright?” Erica asked, trying to help him up.

“Call an ambulance, a doctor! Somebody!” he yelped in pain.

The fine girl turned back and looked at him. “Good you deserved it!” she laughed. There was a triumphant smile on her face. She looked like an angel.

Louis couldn’t help but stare at her dumbfoundedly. He forgot all pain in his arm. When she was out of sight, he began screaming in pain.

(Back in the conference room)

“Excuse me, Mr. Lin, there’s a Miss Hsuan here, she claims to be Mr. Wong’s lawyer,” announced Shirley, another one of Jimmy’s secretaries.

“I’ll be there in a minute,” answered Jimmy. “Come Xin Ru, let’s go.”

Ruby stood up and followed Jimmy out of the room.

They approached a young woman, who was sitting in the comfortable lounge chair, reading the latest HER magazine. Her legs were crossed. She was absorbed in the fashion magazine.

“Excuse me, Miss Hsuan?” Jimmy announced.

She looked up, and him, “Yes? Can I help you?” she asked.

Jimmy smiled his adorable smile, “I should be asking you that,” he chuckled. “I’m Jimmy Lin, co-executive of this company,” he announced proudly, offering her his hand to shake.

“Jessica Hsuan, I’m Mr. Wong’s lawyer for today, his old lawyer Robert Lee, is on vacation, the firm sent me to fill in,” she announced, shaking his hand.

“I didn’t know Unique Law Firm, had such young, attractive lawyers such as yourself,” declared Jimmy.

“Oh please, no wonder you’re co-executive you have a wonderful way with words,” laughed Jessica. “I just started at the firm two weeks ago.”

“You must be really talented if they let you handle this case,” Jimmy complimented.

Jessica laughed softly, “You are too much.” She looked around the office. “This place seems very busy.”

“Usually is,” answered Jimmy.

“And who might this be?” she asked smiling at Ruby.

“This is my top secretary, Lin Xin Ru,” announced Jimmy.

Ruby smiled nervously and nodded at Jessica.

“Nice to meet you Xin Ru,” Jessica announced. “You’re both Lin, are you two married or related in anyway?” she teased.

Ruby’s eyes looked like they were ready to pop out.

Jimmy laughed, “Nah, just a coincidence, we aren’t related in any way.”

“For your information Ms. Hsuan, Lin is a very, very common surname,” Ruby rudely declared, pushing her glasses up from the tip of her nose. “If you excuse me, I have some photocopying to do.” Ruby stomped off, towards the photocopying room.

“Excuse her she’s a very touchy and unopened minded person, I think it’s that time of the month,” laughed Jimmy.

Jessica nodded.

“Here, let me show you to the conference room,” announced Jimmy leading her inside the room. “Have a seat, the everyone else will be here in a moment.”

“Mr. Lin,” Shirley said knocking on the door.

“What is it?” he asked.

“Lawyer Koo, wants to talk to you privately,” answered Shirley.

Jimmy nodded, he looked at Jessica, “Miss Hsuan, please excuse me, make yourself comfortable,” he announced.

Jessica nodded.

Jimmy left the room.

Jessica opened her brief case, and took out a tape recorder and started the recording.

Ruby entered the room, and started placing some more documents in front of each seat.

Jessica was watching Ruby’s every move.

“What are you looking at?” Ruby asked.

“Ms. Lin, I find that your fashion sense is…is well very poor,” announced Jessica, looking at Ruby’s attire. She wore really ugly black dress pants, and an oversized pink top. “Can I ask you a question?” Jessica asked.

“What is it?” Ruby asked.

“Have you lost a lot of weight recently? Maybe a hundred pounds?” Jessica teased, “By the look of your clothes it looks like you have.”

Ruby dropped all the documents on the table loudly, “You know what Jessica…” she exclaimed.

Jimmy and Louis entered.

Jessica saw Louis so turned her face away, not wanting him to recognize her.

“Xin Ru come here, let me introduce you to our company’s top lawyer,” announced Jimmy. “This is Louis Koo.”

“Good afternoon, Mr. Koo,” Ruby greeted shyly.

Louis smiled weakly at her. He was holding on to his left arm tightly. He looked at Ruby, “Xin Ru is it?” he asked.

Ruby nodded.

“Can you go make me a cup of coffee? Just plain black, no cream, no milk, and no sugar,” announced Louis.

“Yes sir, I’ll go get it now,” Ruby said, heading towards the door.

“Jimmy, buddy, where did you find that?” he asked. “Come on, you’re the boss’ nephew, you deserve a couple hot secretaries not that below average chick,” whispered Louis.

“She gets work done,” answered Jimmy. “That’s all I need, I don’t mix business and pleasure my friend, I’m not you.”

“What a jerk,” Jessica mumbled to herself. “Only a playboy like him cares for looks.” Jessica sat up straight, “AHEM!” she announced calling their attention.

“Ah yes, Louis this is Mr. Wong’s lawyer, Jessica Hsuan, from Unique Law Firm, three blocks down the street,” announced Jimmy. “Miss Hsuan, this is our famous Lawyer, Louis Koo.”

Louis looked at her and smirked. “I see we met again,” he announced.

“Against my will,” replied Jessica. “This just isn’t my day,” she sighed.

“Well darling this is my lucky day, I run into you twice,” Louis said with a cheeky grin.

“I think I’m going to be sick,” declared Jessica pretending to be sick. “Quick get this shallow creep away from me.”

Ruby entered, “Mr. Koo, here is your coffee,” handing him his coffee.

“Thank you Xin Ru,” declared Louis.

Erica entered, “Mr. Lin, Mr. Koo, Mr. Wong had just called, he wants to postpone the meeting for Monday, he’s really busy right now,” she announced.

“What kind of guy is he?” exclaimed Jessica, “Making me come all the way here and waiting for almost half an hour and he isn’t going to show?”

“How about I treat you to lunch?” Louis offered.

“How about no,” answered Jessica.

“Then how about dinner?” he asked.

Jessica looked at him, “Look at me,” she said.

“Already am honey,” he smirked.

Jessica had a disgusted look on her face, “Tell me what you see?”

“I see one beautiful, hot, sexy girl,” answered Louis.

“And?” she asked.

“And…” Louis repeated.

“You expect a girl like me to be free on a Friday night?” she asked. “HA!” she laughed. “Sorry I’m not a dateless wonder like you.”

“Dateless wonder huh?” he asked. “Xin Ru!” he called.

“Yes Mr. Koo?” Ruby asked.

“Want to have dinner with me tonight?” he asked.

“I’m sorry sir, I have plans,” answered Ruby.

“Ha! Even she won’t go out with you and you expect me too?” Jessica laughed.

“How about we all go out for lunch?” Jimmy suggested. “My treat.”

“Boss, I’d like the rest of today off,” announced Ruby.

“Lunch with us first,” said Jimmy.

“Alright,” answered Ruby,

”How about you Miss Hsuan?” Jimmy asked.

Jessica smiled at him, “Call me Jessica,” she said sweetly. “I’d be delighted to go,” she said linking her arm with Jimmy.

“Louis?” Jimmy asked.

“Definitely,” he smirked looking at Jessica. “Anywhere that beauty is, I’ll be there.”

“Does he have to come?” Jessica asked. “Shouldn’t he go see a doctor or something?” she asked patting his left arm really hard.

“Ouch!” Louis exclaimed, the instant she touched him.

“Maybe you should see a doctor,” suggested Jimmy.

“Lunch first,” he announced. He wanted to see this Jessica girl as much as possible, there was something special about her.

They went to lunch in a quaint little restaurant at a near by plaza.

“Damn, my one day off and I have to go around following the target! DAMN YOU SAPPHIRE!” she yelled to herself.

“Jade, don’t be like that,” announced an elegant girl, who appeared on the laptop screen. “You know they got work to do, you got the easiest job out of the five of us. Think of Ruby, she has to work everyday, Monday to Friday, from 9am to at least 5 or 6 pm. All you ever have to do is work in that hospital as a nurse,” she reasoned.

“Come on Emerald, you got the best job, you get to work as a secretary in that modeling studio, and you work in the men’s department. I bet I could do a whole lot of damage there, huh?” she asked.

“That’s why you’re at the hospital,” she laughed.

“See look at you, you have no work to do, you have time to go surf the net and use the web camera, I gave you,” announced Jade.

“I don’t have a lot of time,” replied Emerald.

“Ya, look you’re on now, you’re talking to me now aren’t you?” she asked.

“Check your email, Ruby emailed everyone, it’s important, Pearl called told me to remind you,” said Emerald.

“I did but it doesn’t make sense,” replied Jade.

“Use your brain girl, read in between the lines,” announced Emerald.

“EM! Can’t you just tell me?” she begged.

“You know the rules,” answered Emerald. “We shouldn’t even be talking right now.”

“GIGI! Where are the profiles of last week’s models?” they heard some man yell.

“Jade, I got to go now, my boss is calling, remember THREE!” she hinted, hanging up the phone.

“Aiya! Already hinting it to me, might as well give me the damn message, do we really need to be that secretive?” she asked herself.

She sat back in the driver’s seat closing her eyes, remembering the warm secure feeling of being held in his embrace. His face, his smile, and his gentle, loving, warm brown eyes. Drops of tears began trickling down her cheek, thinking to her first love. “Quit it Michelle Jade Yip, haven’t you shed enough tears for that jerk for the past six years? It’s time to get over it! Stop thinking about him! STOP!” she exclaimed, hitting her head against the steering wheel. After half an hour of mourning over the past, she opened the email and read it carefully.

Pearl, Jade, Emerald, and Sapphire,

Went shopping seven days ago. Bought couple OUTingSKIRTS. Neighbor, she abandoned me. There was warehouse sale across the street. Clothes very important to me. Very big meeting now. I going late. Grammar bad today. Hehehhe…

Love always,

Ruby

“What the hell is she trying to say?” Michelle asked herself. She thought about what Emerald told her. “THREES,” she mumbled loudly. She read it over again. “Oh!” she exclaimed happily.
________________________________________________________________________

It was late afternoon, about 4 almost 5 o’clock.

“Really need to get going now,” said Ruby standing up.

“You need me to drive you?” Jimmy asked.

”No thanks boss,” she answered. “Bye Lawyer Koo, Miss Hsuan,” Ruby said heading towards the door.

“She’s such a weirdo, she actually rejected me, a nerd like her rejecting me, Louis Koo!” exclaimed Louis.

“You are so shallow, only judging people by their appearance, I’m leaving!” announced Jessica.

“EY! No good bye kiss!” he laughed, calling to her, but she didn’t look at him, she just left. “What did I do? Jeez girls these days!” Louis chuckled. He looked at the direction Jessica left and smirked, “I’m going to get you my dear Jessica, by any means necessary.”

Jessica was outside but didn’t see Ruby anywhere. “This girl is fast,” she smiled to herself.

Ruby had caught a taxi and went home. She entered her apartment building grabbing her mail, and catching the elevator up to the third floor. She entered her apartment. She kicked off her shoes and flopped down on the couch. She took off her glasses and threw them across the room. She pulled her hair out of the bun. She took a look at her watch, “Exactly two hours,” she mumbled. She stood up and entered the washroom. She threw plenty of cold, cool water on her face, washing off the horrible foundation that made her look pale and dead.

She took off her oversized clothes and looked at herself in the mirror. She had a perfect figure, soft, smooth skin. She was the complete opposite of Lin Xin Ru, the nerd. She looked at her right shoulder. There was a big scar there, and another right beneath her chest. Tears began forming in her eyes, thinking back to that incident.
