Killing Me Softly

Chapter 4: Meeting Him At The Pub

There is a little flouriest shop called Just For You, located in the heart of Hong Kong, where many beautiful flowers are found, from lilacs, to lilies, to roses, to carnations, to any possible flowers that can be thought of, are be found. The owner of this quaint little shop, was the gentle, elegant Kenix Kwok.

The shop was the perfect size, nothing was crowded, and it didn’t look empty at all. In the back, before the storage room, there was the counter in the left corner, where the cash register sat. There were many different vases displayed along the wall, behind the register. The counter was made of class, in the glass, lucky gems, and good luck charms were displayed. Phone cards were also sold in the shop. Beside the cash register there was a white, Phalaenoposis Orchid. Kenix loved that plant the most, when she was at the shop she’d bring it down with her, she’d take usually kept it at home. It was her most precious possession. She could kill or even die for it. She’s had the Orchid for over twenty years. Across from the counter there was a big copper cage, with five little budgies in it, flying around and chirping happily. Around the room there were fresh, healthy green vines boarding the room. There were some vines that hung from the ceiling. The walls were sponge painted orange, red and yellow. When entering the store, the first thing you’d see are plants, and flowers on both your left and right. In the center was the pathway. There were three aisles, full of mainly flowers, neatly spaced. In the back room, that was more like a green house, there were more plants and a few flowers. Kenix kept an example of each plant she had in the aisle furthest to the right, while the other two rows were filled with different bouquets of flowers.
The owner, Kenix Kwok, gave her hired help the day off today and was working alone. She was walking around the shop, watering her plants and flowers. She loved plants, and flowers, she loved nature. Nature was her sanctuary, away from all her problems. After watering the plants, she sat down grabbing some sticks of lucky bamboo, of different sizes and started placing them nicely in a vase, placing some colored pebbles, and rocks around them at the bottom to keep them standing straight. She poured a little bit of water in the vase. It took her an hour to get it they way she wanted.

It was an ordinary day in the little flouriest shop, just a few customers coming in and out. So far three people came in to buy bouquets of flowers, one bouquet of yellow roses bought by a young girl, possibly for a sick friend, one bouquet of red roses, bought by a young man, anxiously, probably for an angry girlfriend, one bouquet of pink roses probably for a secret crush. A couple came in to choose flowers for their wedding. It was a normal day.

At about 5 that afternoon she received a phone call.

“Hello?” she answered.

“Pearl?” the voice asked.

“Sapphire? Why are you calling me? What happened?” Kenix asked.

“You know the meeting Ruby and I were in?” Sapphire asked.

“Ya,” replied Kenix.

“Well, right before the contract was signed, my client was shot dead,” announced Sapphire.

“And?” Kenix asked.

“Well, Ruby pretended to faint, so it can go with her persona well, but you’d never guess who came at that exact moment!” declared Sapphire.

“Who?” Kenix asked.

“Who caused our dear old Ruby so much pain, four years ago?” Sapphire asked.

“NO!” exclaimed Kenix unbelievably. “It can’t be! Why is he in Hong Kong? What happened, how’s Ruby?”

Sapphire sighed loudly, “She’s acting perfectly normal on the outside, but I know, that she’s really broken up now, I bet you, she’s at home crying, right now,” replied Sapphire.

“How were their reactions when they met?” Kenix asked.

“At first they stared at each other for the longest time, while he was looking at her, not recognizing her, he tried to, but didn’t,” replied Sapphire. “The pain in her eyes were so evident again.”

“What’s going on here?” Kenix asked. “First Jade, runs into the playboy jerk, now Ruby runs into the stupid jerk that almost killed her. What’s going to happen next?”

“I know,” replied Sapphire. “Why does life have to be so cruel? It’s bad enough will lead such cold and heartless lives, but why do we have to suffer, we didn’t choose neither did we want to be like this.”

“I know what you’re talking about,” replied Kenix, “We all do.”

“Pearl, let me ask you one question,” announced Sapphire.

“Alright, what is it?” Kenix asked.

“Are we the good guys or are we the bad guys?” Sapphire asked.

Kenix shook her head, “I don’t know, I truly don’t know, I’ve been asking myself the same question since I was twelve.”

“Aiya,” sighed Sapphire. “The reason I called is because, I wanted to ask you if you can check up on Ruby, I couldn’t because, well at work, people don’t think we get along, and if I acted worried and all, they’d suspect something, plus that idiot Louis Koo is always following me,” explained Sapphire.

“Alright, you want me to see her now?” Kenix asked.

“No, not now,” replied Sapphire. “Tomorrow, tomorrow, she’s taking the day off work, give her some time to cry tonight, then tomorrow try to make her feel better, take her out or something.”

“You can count on me,” replied Kenix. “I’ll watch over her.”

“Okay, I got to go now, bye,” answered Sapphire.

“Bye,” replied Kenix, hanging up the phone.

Both girls were wondering, “What is love? How can one emotion harm someone to such an extent? Why did it bring so much sorrow, and regret? Why can’t Ruby and Jade forget those two jerks? How can they love and hate someone at the same time?”

~Later that evening~

(Chan’s Modeling Agency)

“Gigi, you can go home now, be here before seven tomorrow morning, we have to draft a few more new coming models,” answered a tall, thin beautiful woman.

“Yes, Miss Choi,” replied Gigi.

“Goodbye,” the lady said to her coldly.

As soon as she left, Gigi stuck her tongue out at her. “If I had my gun here, I’d shoot you right here, right now!” she thought. “What a bitch.” Gigi gathered her things. “Where do I go now?” she asked herself. She looked at her watch, “Hmm…7:30,” she mumbled. “Jade might be at the Pub now. Maybe I should check on her,” she thought. She drove to the pub, which was one of the most famous bars in Hong Kong. She entered the quiet bar, there were mostly men in business suits there to drink.

Jade, not only worked as a nurse at the hospital, but also as a bartender at this Pub, in the evenings. Many rich and powerful men came in and out if this Pub. The entertainment for the past few nights were from a beautiful young girl by the name of Cecilia Cheung, who sang every night. Ever since her arrival, the pub had been crowded by many good looking young men.

Gigi made her way over to the bar, “Michelle!” she called.

Jade turned around, because she heard her name being called. “Em…I mean Gigi, what are you doing here?” she asked.

“Was in the neighborhood, so decided to drop by, to see how you’re doing,” answered Gigi. “So you feeling better?”

“Better than before, but I’m swamped with work, you mind lending me a hand?” Michelle asked.

“Is that allowed?” Gigi asked. “What do I get out of it?”

“I won’t beat you,” laughed Michelle.

“I’m not scared of you,” replied Gigi.

“Just get over here and lend me a hand woman!” Michelle demanded.

Gigi listened to her friend and hopped over the counter, and started to mix some drinks. “You owe me Michelle Yip.”

“Ya, ya whatever,” replied Michelle. “I’ll buy you an ice cream later.”

“You’re bribing me with ice cream?” Gigi asked. “What do I look like a four year old?”

“Get to work,” announced Michelle.

“Excuse me Miss, can I get a beer?” someone asked.

“Ya, give me a second,” answered Michelle turning around to look at the person, holding a glass of beer in her hand.

“Chelly?” he asked, smiling at her and staring at her intently.

Her eyes were full of anger, and hate, Michelle took the glass of beer and poured it all over his face.

He smirked to himself, looking at the ground, “I deserve that, didn’t I?” he asked, nodding his head.

“Damn right you did!” exclaimed Michelle.

“A little aggressive, now aren’t we?” he asked. “Very different from the Michelle I use to know.”

“LEAVE!” she declared pointing to the door. “I don’t want to see you!”

“Aww…come on Michelle, you don’t mean that,” he said, touching her hand.

“DON’T” Michelle exclaimed, pulling her hand away from him. “Don’t you dare touch me.”

“Didn’t you miss me?” he asked. “Michelle Yip, I’m hurt,” he said touching his heart. “I’ve been missing you every night and day, ever since the last time I saw you,” he answered. For him the last time he thought he saw her, was last Friday night, but Michelle didn’t know he saw her.

“STOP!” she yelled. “Just stop it! You hear me? I don’t want to hear anymore bullshit from you. I’ve had enough. Six years! I don’t want to hear it anymore!” she declared.

“Miss can I get two martinis?” a man in a business suit asked.

Michelle looked over to the man, “I’ll be there in a minute,” answered Michelle.

He grabbed her hand, “We need to talk.”

“Too bad for you, if you can’t see, I’m busy working,” announced Michelle slapping his hand away.

“Then take a break,” he suggested.

“Take a break?” she asked. “For you?”

He smiled his heart melting smile at her and nodded.

“Who do you think you are to me?” she asked. “Why do I have to do anything for you?” she asked. “Up yours!”

“Feisty now, aren’t you,” he chuckled. “Six years, you’ve changed, but still as beautiful as before.”

“And you,” she began, “Some things never change.” She turned her back, and walked to the other side of the bar.

He smiled at her. He looked at the girl looking at him, “Ey, Gigi, what are you doing here?” he asked.

“Do I know you?” she asked.

He laughed, “What’s up with Michelle? Why does she hate me so much?” he asked.

“I’m sorry mister whoever you are, my friend and I have no idea who you are,” replied Gigi.

“Gigi, don’t talk to strangers,” Michelle announced, still mixing drinks.

“If I’m a stranger, why did you pour beer all over me?” he asked, trying to trap her.

“It slipped out of my hand,” she replied.

“Oh really?” he laughed. “Never knew you were so clumsy. But that’s what I liked about you, huh?”

“Beat it loser, she’s not interested,” announced Gigi.

“I want her to look me in the eyes and tell me that,” he declared.

Michelle closed her eyes, swallowing her pain and sorrow. She looked at him, his eyes, she’d always get lost in his eyes. She couldn’t say it, instead she held out her hand.

“Michelle,” Gigi said shaking her. “Don’t give in.”

“Butt out Gigi,” she announced.

He smiled and held her hand, “I knew you still loved me,” he chuckled.

“HELP MOLEST!” she started yelling. “There’s some stranger touching me!”

Everyone turned to look at them.

“This guy here, is trying to take advantage of me,” Michelle pretended to cry. “Look he won’t let go of my hand.”

Gigi tried to hold in her giggles. “This is what happened, he asked for a beer, and my friend here, got him one, he then said something inappropriate so she threw the beer at him, he didn’t get the message and he continued hitting on and teasing her. Now look, he’s still holding her hand, refusing to let go,” she announced.

“No, I…I…she…I’ve known her for years,” he explained. “I…I know her name. We use to date.”

“Who doesn’t know her name?” Gigi asked. “It’s on her nametag. I she knew you, why would she be crying now! You’re a liar!”

“Let go you bastard the lady isn’t interested,” announced a young sophisticated man.

He let go of her hand. “Michelle…” he said with sincerity in his voice.

Michelle looked at him, tears were building up in her eyes. She shook her head, “I don’t know you,” she announced.

“Can’t we just talk, it’s been six freaking years!” he exclaimed.

Michelle looked at him, about to say something.

“Ey, what’s going on over here?” a girl came towards the bar, wrapping her arms around his neck.

Michelle looked at her, wanting to beat her.

“Hey Michelle,” she greeted.

“Cecilia,” answered Michelle. Cecilia was the singer, who sang to entertain all the people who came to the bar.

“Who’s your friend? She doesn’t work here,” Cecilia said pointing to Gigi.

“Oh this is Gigi Lai, she’s my friend, she’s just helping me out since it’s so busy tonight,” answered Michelle glaring at him.

“Nice to meet you,” Cecilia said to Gigi.

Gigi nodded.

“Michelle, this cutie here, is my date for tonight,” she said hugging him.

“Oh really?” Michelle asked, sounding pissed.

“This is Won Bin Kim Do Jin, just call him Won Bin,” Cecilia introduced. She gave Won Bin a peck on the cheek, “This is Michelle Yip, she works here, three nights a week.”

Won Bin, kept his eyes on Michelle, while she was glaring at him.

“Come, let’s go sit over there, where there’s more privacy,” Cecilia told him, pulling him off the stool.

Won Bin was just looking at Michelle, he turned to the beautiful Cecilia, and nodded, “Since I don’t know them, then they wouldn’t mind, now would they?” he asked, hoping Michelle might say something, if she didn’t they he could still have a little fun.

Michelle turned her back to them, “Have fun,” she said.

Won Bin and Cecilia left, to go sit at a table, in the far left corner, where Michelle could still see them clearly.

Michelle tried to concentrate on her work, but her eyes kept wondering over to that left corner, she was there physically, but her mind was floating out in space somewhere. She broke at least six glass cups.

“Michelle, why don’t you take a brake, I’ll take over, your shift is over in an hour anyways,” suggested Gigi.

Michelle looked at Gigi and nodded. She left the bar and sat at a table all by herself, her back facing the same direction Won Bin was in. She couldn’t stand seeing him. She closed her eyes and rested her head on the table.

Gigi on the other hand had her hands tied. Every other second someone was ordering a drink. Things started to cool down, nearing the end of Michelle’s shift. Gigi flopped down on the bartender’s stool, enjoying her moments of peace. She was massaging her legs, “How the heck does Michelle do it?” she asked.

It was nearing ten o’clock, Michelle was dead, asleep while Cecilia had to get ready to go back on stage to sing again, leaving Won Bin all alone. His eyes were set on Michelle. He got up out of his booth, and walked over to Michelle. She was only wearing navy blue jeans, and a pink tank top. He took off his leather jacket and wrapped it around her, and quietly sat down beside her. He rested his chin on the table staring at her, watching her sleep.

He’s known her for so long. He still remembers the first time he met her.

~Flash Back~

It was way back in the early 80s, he was only 4 at the time and she was 3. It’s a mystery how he still remembers so clearly. As a child Michelle has always been adorable. Her she always wore little dresses with little flowery designs. Her hair was always kept in pigtails. She was always sucking on a red lollipop.

It was a beautiful spring afternoon, it was on his fourth birthday too. His parents had taken him to Chucky Cheese, to celebrate. They had invited his entire kindergarten class, to the party. At the time he was really shy and quiet. The other kids were really mean to him, when adults weren’t around. He remembers this one kid named Terrance, had pushed him into the ball pit, but Won Bin always called it the Ball Pit of Doom, or the Pit of No Return, not only did Terrance push him in but stole all his tokens and tickets. He remembered the ball pit being really deep, and at the time he was barely 2’3. He remembered struggling, trying to swim, trying to keep up surface.

“Help! I’m drowning in the ball pit of no return!” yelled little four year old Won Bin.

He kept yelling and screaming but no one came to save him. He thought he was doomed for sure, when he felt two tiny little hands pull him up on his knees. He came face to face with a little girl wearing white overalls with sunflower designs on it. She wore a pink top underneath. Her hair was in pigtails. In her mouth was a lollipop, she looked at him and smiled. She was standing up.

“Why aren’t you drowning?” he asked.

The girl just giggled, and signaled him to stand up. He stood up and realized that the ball pit of doom was only up to his stomach and wasn’t really deep. The little girl started throwing the plastic balls at him, trying to play. But he just stood there like an idiot. He was looking at his left hand that was stinging, he could see a little bit of blood coming out. When Terrance threw him in the ball pit, Won Bin had scratched his tiny hand on something. He began to cry. The little girl ran to him and held his hand. She looked at the blood and wiped it away with her sleeve, she took a sticker and stuck it over his scratch, using it like a band-aid. She then kissed his hand and patted his head, she pulled the lollipop out of her mouth and stuck it in his mouth. She gave him and peck on the cheek. Then a lady came and picked her up taking her away, she waved goodbye to him. Won Bin looked at the sticker on his hand, and the lollipop in his mouth, and waved goodbye.

After that day, Won Bin nagged his parents to take him to Chucky Cheese every Saturday, and every Saturday, he’d see the same little girl. After a while, he learned that her name was Michelle Yip. They took two pictures together, one he kept and one she did. She became his best friend, until one day, she stopped coming to their special meeting place, and he never saw her again.

Until fifteen years later, when he was in his second year of University. He had become more social through the years, and developed a reputation of being a famous playboy, all around campus. It was the first day of his second year, and but her first day of freshman year. She was moving her things into a dorm on the third floor, while he was heading up to the fourth, they bumped into each other on the staircase dropping their belongings.

“I’m so sorry,” a young girl wearing pink track pants and a white t-shirt, apologized.

Won Bin looked at her, she was pretty cute, he decided she would be his target for this semester. “Let me help you,” he said, helping her pick up her things. He picked up a silver picture frame, with a picture of two little children, one being him and one being his best friend, when he was a toddler. He looked up at her.

She looked up and saw what he was holding, and quickly grabbed it back, accidentally pricking her finger on the corner of the sharp frame.

Won Bin saw the blood beginning to drip out, he held her hand, and wiped her finger on to his shirt, then opening her sticker album that had also fallen out, and stuck a sticker on her finger. He looked into her eyes, brought her finger to his lips and kissed it.

She just stared at him.

He held her hand tightly, he took out his wallet and showed her his picture of them together. He brought her hand to his cheek, “I missed you,” he said, wrapping his arms around her.

They sat in the middle of the staircase, with Won Bin hugging her.

~End Flash Back~

Tonight she acted completely different, from the Michelle Yip, he use to know. He really did miss her, but never admitted it. He pulled out his wallet and looked at the picture of them. There were two, one was of them when they were little, the other that was hidden beneath was one taken when they were together. He touched her cheek, and carefully held her hand and kissed it. “I miss you Chelly.”

Michelle was still sleeping, It looked like she was having a bad dream, she grabbed his hand that was gently holding hers, not letting go. It looked like the dream really disturbed her. He patted her back, trying to ease her pain. She soon returned to normal, and was sleeping peacefully again. He smiled watching her sleep. He looked at her lovingly, and moved closer to her lips, wanting to taste her lips, just once.

Gigi approached the table. “What are you doing?” she asked. “The girl’s sleeping for goodness sake!” she scolded. “How can you take advantage of her like that?”

Won Bin immediately sat up. “I…I…” he didn’t know what to say. Sure he loved women, but he usually can control himself, he knew better than to take advantage of someone.

“You know how much she hates you? You know how much pain she’s been through? How long it took her to forget you? You know what you did to her? How you changed her?” Gigi asked.

“I…I…” he couldn’t think of anything to say.

“Let go of her, I won’t be responsible for her actions if she happens to wake up freaking out,” announced Gigi.

“You taking her home now?” he asked.

Gigi nodded.

“Don’t wake her, I’ll carry her to your car,” he suggested.

“But…” Gigi objected.

Won Bin didn’t listen to Gigi, he picked Michelle up and carried her outside.

Gigi shook her head and followed him, leading him to the car. She unlocked and opened the door for him.

Won Bin carefully placed Michelle in the car, he buckled her seatbelt for her. He carefully wrapped his leather jacket around her again, to keep her warm, he stared at one last time before closing the door. He looked at Gigi. “Make sure she gets home okay,” he said.

Gigi got in her car and rolled down Michelle’s window, “Why should you care? She’s not your girlfriend anymore,” she announced. “She sees you as her worst enemy.” Gigi started her car and drove off.

Won Bin watched the car drive off into the darkness. He let out a sigh, he put his hands in his pocket, and walked back inside the pub. For the past few days the only thing on his mind was Michelle. Ever since he thought he saw her at the masseuse parlor that night, he couldn’t get her face out of his mind.
