Chapter 48

Epilogue -- part 2

“I’m not talking to you,” answered Gigi, trying to pull away.

“You’re cute when you’re stubborn, you know?” he teased, hugging her tighter, not allowing her to move. “Gigi, I know you hate that I’ve lied about so many things, but please understand that I never intended to have you hurt in anyway. You always came ahead of my mission. You’re safety and well being means the world to me. I promise you that I won’t lie or hide anything from you again, okay?”

“Don’t make promises you can’t keep,” Gigi answered coldly.

“You lack that much trust in me?” Julian asked.

“I don’t ever know when your truthful or not,” she answered.

“Love me enough and believe in me,” Julian pleaded, kissing the back of her hair.

(half a year later)

“Okay, you rest sweetie, mommy will pick you up so shark fin soup later,” Maggie spoke to the phone, “Now get back to bed,” she ordered, hanging up the phone.

Gillian entered then.

Maggie looked at her, “Gillian, do you mind driving me home now?” she asked.

“Me?” Gillian asked.

“Ya, is that a problem?” Maggie asked.

“No…No…not at all,” Gillian replied. “Let’s go.”

“You’re a dear,” Maggie said smiling.

Gillian nodded.

They headed down to Gillian’s car, and made their way to the Lin mansion.

“Can you stop here for a second,” Maggie said, telling Gillian to pull over by a little restaurant, she ran in, and came out with take out in ten minutes.

“What did you get?” Gillian asked, starting the car again.

“Soup, Jimmy’s sick,” Maggie announced.

“Oh really?” Gillian asked.

“He was out all weekend,” Maggie answered.

“Was he now?” Gillian asked, as if she didn’t care.

“I mean it out, out all weekend,” replied Maggie. “You remember the storm the other night right? He came home soaked and wet.”

“Just a little cold, serves him right for staying out all weekend,” Gillian replied. Sooner than expected, Gillian pulled up into the Lin mansion driveway.

“You want to come in?” Maggie asked.

Gillian shook her head, “I need to get home.”

“You know Jimmy’s been calling for you,” Maggie said.

“Me or Annie?” she asked. She closed hr eyes and sighed. “I don’t know Aunt Maggie, I always thought he was a good guy, but the way he led Annie on, and then just left her was cruel, I don’t know, I can’t trust him, not to do the same to me,” Gillian answered.

“I don’t know what’s going on between the two of you and Annie, and I’m not going to interfere, but really think about this, are you willing to let him go? Do you love him at all?”

“It’s just a little cold, he won’t die,” Gillian replied.

“What are you angry at though?” Maggie asked, handing Gillian the bowl of soup, and getting out of the car.

Gillian sat and thought about her and Jimmy.

--- “I love you Gillian.”---

---“You’re so different from her.”---

---“I don’t know what I’d do without you…”---

---“Gillian don’t ever leave me again.”---

Gillian couldn’t stop thinking about him.

Jimmy was sleeping in his room. “Gil…” he mumbled. “Come back…” He coughed and sneezed so much that he woke himself up. He looked around and found himself in his room. “MOM!” he called. “MOM!”

“Still calling for your mommy, when you’re sick?” a familiar voice echoed in his room.

Jimmy looked at her, “Gil…” he said happily. “You…”

Gillian carried the soup into the room. “It’s really stupid to go out and get yourself sick,” she said, taking out the soup and pouring it into a bowl, and checking it to see if it was still hot.

“I was at your place all weekend,” he replied.

“Since when?”

“Well I was just outside,” he answered. “Just checking on you, make sure nothing happens, or anything.”

“You were outside my apartment all weekend?” she asked.

Jimmy nodded.

“Why didn’t you call me or come up?” she asked.

“Because you said you didn’t want to see me,” Jimmy answered.

“Then why did you come?”

“Because I had to see you, even if it was from afar,” Jimmy replied.

Gillian sat on his bed with the bowl of soup, to feed him, “Here, eat it up while its still warm,” she said spoon feeding him.

It wasn’t until a year later that Edison was ready for his operation, for the bullet to be removed. It was successfully removed, and he awoke a week after. He was devastated by the news of Ruby’s disappearance. He was stuck in bed for another three months.

“Ed, glad you’re up, everyone’s been worried about you,” Won Bin announced, his eyes focused on the street.

Edison was silent, his eyes focused on everything outside, “Ruby…” was the only person on his mind. “Did you just leave me? Just like that?”

“A lot happened,” Won Bin said. “Jimmy and Gillian got married last month, Gigi’s an expecting mom now. Louis is a lot more stable now, especially since Jessica’s been training him and everything. Kenix and Mike things are still a little crazy with them, they’re a couple, but just won’t admit it to each other or anyone else. And Chelly is still Chelly, wanting to shoot me every time I do something wrong,” he laughed.

Edison still wasn’t listening. “Uh-huh…” he mumbled. “I was expecting to see you when I awoke this time,” he announced.

“Aren’t you going to ask where we’re going?” Won Bin asked.

“Where?”

“There’s this great restaurant down by the harbor, we’re celebrating your recovery there tonight,” Won Bin answered.

“Great…” Edison answered.

“Smile a bit would ya?” Won Bin asked.

Edison ignored him.

At his party Edison was out of it, he kept wondering where Ruby could be. They were by the harbor, he remembered how much she loved the water. Coincidentally, they were right beside the old light house, where Ruby had taken him, after the museum incident. He remembered how lovely she looked sitting at the top of that lighthouse staring out into the ocean.

“What’s wrong with him?” Louis whispered.

“He’s out of it,” Jimmy answered.

“He’s worried about Ruby,” Won Bin replied.

“Edison, you okay?” Gillian asked. “Since you’ve awaken you’ve barely said two words to anyone.”

Edison looked at her and shook his head, “You guys have fun, I’m going on a walk.” Edison got up from his party and walked away. He walked away aimlessly in the streets. When he bumped into someone, causing her to drop his things. “Sorry…” he mumbled.

“My fault,” her soft voice rang in his ears.

Edison abruptly grabbed hold of her arm, holding her back, and stared at her face. His heart stopped when his eyes founded hers. His face lit up, and his usual dumb grin that only appeared around one person.

She stared at him afraid, and angry at first, but after staring into his warm brown eyes her gaze softened, she’s met him somewhere before, she was certain. She stared at him confused, and blankly. She had this unusual serge and rush of emotions burst open from within. She reluctantly pulled her wrist away from him, and held it to herself protectively.

Edison bent down and gathered her things, and handed it to her, “I’m sorry,” he apologized again.

She reached out to take her belongings back, suddenly her body stiffened, and she heard and saw two gun shots, and images flashing through her mind. The first was of her being injured, the second was of him. “Do I…do I know you?” she asked.

“Ruby…” Edison called her name ever so sweetly, reaching out for her hand. “Ruby I,” he called her again, with more passion, and longing in his voice.

“Ruby?” she repeated awkwardly as if she were unfamiliar with her own name.

“Don’t you remember me?” he asked, his eyes begging her to recognize him.

She stared at him intently, her heart was beating wildly. She stared at him and a few images flew through his mind.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“KISS!” yelled a crowded room yelled.

He gazed at her, longingly, and held her chin in his warm palm, and positioned it to his face, and slowly closed the gap between their lips. The moment their lips touch, they were pulled into a world of their own. He couldn’t get enough of her. After at least 5 minutes, they finally broke apart.

Everyone was howling, and clapping.

She looked away blushing.
He tried to look into her eyes, but she kept turning away. He was still holding on to her. “I’m Edison Chen,” he announced smiling at her.

She nodded and smiled.

“And you are?” he asked.

“Ruby, Ruby Lin Xin Ru,” she answered.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

She stared at his face intently. She had a feeling that she knows him.

Edison felt his heart cringe, seeing her struggling to remember who he was. He suddenly thought back to when he first bumped into her again after the four long years, how he had reacted in the same manner, not recognizing her. “Could she have somehow lost her memory?” he thought. He held her hand out towards her face.

She cringed, afraid that he might hurt her, but instead he started caressing her cheek.

“Ruby…” he called to her, moving closer towards her, and slowly embracing her in his arms.

She froze in his arms, visualizing another image.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Edison chuckled to himself. “Rubes, what are you planning to do after this is all over?” he asked.

“I can’t think that far right now,” Ruby answered. “I can only think of now, the moment at hand.”

Edison nodded.

“Do you have things planned?” Ruby asked.

“Not much,” answered Edison, “Just you.”

“What?” Ruby asked.

“You’re my past, present and future. Just you,” Edison announced.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“I missed you so much,” Edison cooed in her ears. He was delighted to see her.

She didn’t know what was going on, but she wasn’t frightened of the stranger, he made her feel comfortable. She felt safe and secure. She didn’t want him to ever let go of her, so stayed silent in his arms.

“Angel!” a voice called from behind them.

She pushed away from the stranger, and looked back to the young man running towards her.

“Ruby…” Edison called to her, wondering why she pushed him away.

She didn’t look at him, but at the floor.

The young man came closer and closer, “You okay, Angel?” he asked, his arm around shoulder securely.

“Ya, I’m fine Nic,” she said turning in towards him, yet her eyes wandering towards the stranger.

“Did she find someone new?” Edison assumed. “She forgot about me, about everything we’ve been through, everything we shared. Has she forgotten who she is too?”

He was going to take her back into his arm and tell this guy to keep away from her but her voice rang in his mind. “I just can’t do this anymore, my life is stressed enough as it is, I really want to give up sometimes, but I can’t…there are a lot of people depending on me. I don’t need you to be an added weight placed upon my shoulder!”

All Ruby ever wanted was out. She just wanted to get away from it all. If she found true happiness with someone else, then so be it. He can’t ruin it for her.

“Is he bothering you?” Nic asked her.

She shook her head. “Do I know you?” she asked again.

Edison stared at her and that guy, being so intimate. She was still in his arms. “Sorry,” he said. “I must’ve mistook you for someone,” he said turning and walking away.

“WAIT!” she exclaimed.

“Sorry…” Edison said without looking at her.

She felt a tug at her heart, once she saw him leaving. “Strange…” she mumbled.

“Angel you know him?” Nic asked.

“I don’t know,” she answered, for some reason she couldn’t pry her eyes off him, even though he was disappearing into the crowd. The further he went, the more pain she felt in her chest. Her heart stung. A tear fell from her eyes.

“You okay? Why are you crying?” he asked.

She felt her dampened eyes, “Am I?” she asked. “I don’t know why. I’m feeling chest pains now,” she said, massaging her chest.

“Let’s go sit down,” he said, taking her over to a nearby bench on the beach. He ran off and bought her a bottle of water. “How you feeling?” he asked. “You never cry when you have chest pains.”

She shook her head, “I don’t know, why,” she replied leaning into his chest.

“Ey, stop crying,” he urged. “Stop being such a baby.”

“I don’t know where I’d be without you Nic,” she said. “If you didn’t take me back to your home, and took care of me, that day, I could’ve died.”

He laughed. “Well if you weren’t hot, like an angel, I would’ve left you there, and my mom wouldn’t have adopted you, as a god child, and I wouldn’t have to look after you,” he said.

She laughed. “Seriously if not for you, I wouldn’t even have a name.”

“Angel Tse, that’s your name,” he said. He looked through the bags Ruby had, “Ey, who’s wallet is that?”

She remembered the stranger had picked those things up for her, he probably accidentally given her his wallet. “That guy…” she said.

“What about him?” Nic asked.

“He dropped this,” she said. “I have to give this back to him.”

Nic looked at the wallet, about to open it.

“Don’t open it,” she said. “It’s his stuff. It’s personal.”

“How can we give it back, if we don’t know who or where he is?” Nic asked, opening up the wallet. A picture fell out, “Yo, look at this, its you,” he said looking at the picture, it was a picture of Edison and Ruby, from when they were in university in Toronto. The picture he kept since he found it while in Ruby’s apartment in the passed. “I think you do know him.”

She stared at the picture, “Ed…Edison,” she mumbled.

“What?” Nic asked.

“Edison, I think that’s his name,” she said rubbing her head. “Why did he leave?”

”Maybe he thought I was your boyfriend,” Nic answered.

Edison didn’t go back to the restaurant, instead he strolled along the beach, around the lighthouse, picked the lock went inside and up to the very top, and sat at the spot Ruby use to sit to think. He sat there for hours and hours, the sun had already set, but he didn’t notice. All he could think of was Ruby in the arms of another.

He felt someone tap his shoulder, he turned around and looked at her, there she was again behind him, he just stared at her in awe.

She handed him his wallet. “You dropped it earlier,” she said.

“How did you find me?” Edison asked.

She shrugged, “I don’t know, something just led me here,” she answered. “It’s really cool in there, is it your place?” she asked.

Edison turned away not answering.

She sat down beside him, “Can I ask you something?” she asked.

Edison nodded, “Shoot.”

She held out the picture of her and him, “Is this us?” she asked.

Edison took the picture from her hands, and didn’t answer.

“My brother, Nic, is really nosey, he opened your wallet and that picture fell out,” she said.

“That was your brother?” Edison asked, he felt a heavy weight being lifted off his heart.

“Well no, he’s my god brother,” she explained. “About two years ago, he ran into me in the middle of the streets in Macao, and I fainted. He saved me, and took me in and adopted me as his sister,” she explained. She turned to look at him, only finding him staring at her intently again, like he was before. “You’re Edison, right?” she asked.

He nodded.

“I guess that, you know,” she said. “I think it really suits you. You look like an Edison,” she announced. “You still haven’t answered my question about that picture,” she reminded him. “Is that me and you?”

Edison slowly drew closer and closer to her lips and kissed her, softly, and pulled away. “I love you,” he whispered.

She just stared at him confused.

Edison stood up, and offered her his hand, “There are a lot of people who want to see you,” he said.

She just looked at him unsure.

“Trust me,” he said.

She slowly and cautiously placed her and hand in his.

“Follow me,” Edison whispered in her ears, and led her out of the lighthouse and towards the restaurant.

“Where are you taking me?” she asked.

Edison pulled her towards his party. “GEMS! EVERYONE LOOK!” he exclaimed.

Everyone froze when they saw the person with Edison.

Gillian, Kenix, Gigi, Jessica, and Michelle jumped to their feet and hugged her.

“Where did you go?” Jessica exclaimed.

“You scared us half to death!” “Kenix added.

“I thought I was never going to see you again!” Michelle cried.

“It’s so good to see that you’re okay!” Gigi announced hugging Ruby tightly. Gigi was six months pregnant.

“Where the heck have you been? We missed you so much!” Gillian declared.

Ruby just looked at everyone puzzled. “Edison…who are they? Why are they calling me Ruby?”

“You’re Ruby Lin,” Edison filled her in. “They’re your closest friends. You’ve known them forever.”

“What’s wrong with her?” Michelle asked.

“She lost her memory,” Edison answered.

She studied each and every person. They seemed familiar but she had no idea where she knew them from. “I’m sorry…I don’t know who any of you are,” she said after a long while of studying them.
