Killing Me Softly
Chapter 9: What Ruby Was Up Too
Everyday at the exact same time, being 10:00 am, the flouriest shop called, ‘Just For You,’ opens to the public, but the owner Kenix Kwok was down at the shop by 8:00 everyday just to clean, sweep, water the plants and get the shop ready for a day of work. Everything Kenix Kwok has ever done was done to the best of her ability, her saying has always been, “If you do it, do it properly, if not don’t bother, I’ll do it.” It has always been like that, and it will probably always will. Kenix had always put all her heart into everything she’s done, especially when it has to do with her flower shop, only her did she feel like a normal girl, with an average life style, with no worries, no concerns about her next mission, who to kill, who to shoot, what to do, she was just the normal, average shop owner named Kenix Kwok.
After going out with the girls the pervious night, it’s a miracle Kenix was up at this hour.
Kenix lived upstairs above her flouriest shop, in a one bedroom apartment, with bathroom, kitchen and living room, an ordinary home for an anything but ordinary girl.
In her room on her queen size bed, the one and only Ruby Lin was sleeping like a log, with the sun’s rays shining on her magnificent face made her look like an adorable sleeping baby. The sun’s rays not only didn’t bother her deep slumber but made her fall into a deeper sleep, one that she never wanted to awake from.
“Edison,” she mumbled.
Suddenly something strong and forceful knocked her off the bed with just one push. Ruby laid on the floor face down, moaning in pain. She brought her face up and slowly opened them, to have a look around, but what she saw wasn’t an empty apartment, and it wasn’t Kenix, but pink, sloppy, wet tongue covered in doggy drool belonging to a rather large, bold and elegant looking golden retriever. The next thing she knew was something wet and smelly washed her sleepy face. Ruby let out a loud shriek, scaring the so called bold and brave creature to hide under the bed, covering its eyes with its two ears and paws.
Ruby wiped her face with her hand, “Ewwwwwwwwwww!” she cried. “LILY!”
The dog crawled even more under the bed.
“You got doggy drool all over me!” whined Ruby. “Now I smell like doggy breath! Not only that but you woke me up from the dream of the millennium!” she scolded.
The dog whimpered.
Ruby heard the dog whimper, she looked under the bed, “Okay, okay, I guess it was time for me to get up anyways,” she sighed, “Come out, I’m not angry anymore.”
But the dog wouldn’t come out.
“Lily come out right now,” demanded Ruby. Still it wouldn’t come. Ruby grabbed a plastic squeaky bone, “Come out of there, I have your favorite squeaky toy hostage, come out or else this squeaky toy of yours will be flying with the birds,” threatening to throw it out the window.
Lily came out from under the bed, and grabbed her squeaky toy from Ruby, and laid across the bed taking the entire thing up.
Ruby sat on the bed and petted Lily, “Oh so that’s why you woke me up, huh? You wanted to hog the bed all to yourself, so you pushed me off,” she accused. Lily rested her head on Ruby’s leg, “Pearl spoils you too much, doesn’t she? All you ever do at home is sleep in, and eat.”
Lily sat up jumped off the bed, and came back a few minutes later with a picture frame of Kenix in it, she handed it to Ruby.
Ruby looked at the picture frame, “So Pearl sent you up to wake me up, huh?” Ruby announced. Ruby patted Lily’s head and got up, to wash her face. When she was done she went to Kenix’s closet and pulled out one of her outfits. “Ooo…this would look pretty cute on me,” announced Ruby, holding up a blue summer’s dress, which displayed many different shades of blue. Ruby changed into the dress, that she borrowed from Kenix’s closet, and headed downstairs with Lily.
Kenix heard the door open, “My, my, my, look who finally decided to wake up,” announced Kenix looking up from the newspaper, when she saw Ruby she gasped, “Is that my brand new summer’s dress, that I still haven’t worn yet?” she exclaimed.
“Don’t I look cute in it?” Ruby asked as if nothing happened.
“Why are you wearing my dress?” Kenix asked.
“I’m just borrowing it for today,” replied Ruby, smiling cheekily at Kenix. “You’re not angry now are you?” Ruby asked pouting her lips.
Kenix sighed, “This is why I agreed that we all lived separately.”
Ruby hugged Kenix, “You’re the best, you know I’ve always seen you as my big sister,” announced Ruby.
“Oh please, Ruby, cut the sweet talk, what do you want now?” Kenix asked.
“Nothing, nothing at all,” replied Ruby. “I was just saying how much I love my big sister Kenix.”
“Uh-huh,” answered Kenix.
“And as big sister, you have a duty to make sure your little sisters are healthy, and have enough to eat…and so…” began Ruby.
“What do you want for brunch?” Kenix asked.
“I don’t know surprise me,” announced Ruby. “Anything you make tastes delicious.”
“Close your eyes, and hold out your hand,” said Kenix. Ruby did as told. Kenix smiled and slipped some cash in her hand, “There go buy yourself something to eat.”
“Aww…but I wanted to eat your cooking,” pouted Ruby. “You’re supposed to baby me, I’m suffering from depression right now.”
“You don’t look too depressed to me,” said Kenix.
Ruby slouched down and turned her smile into a frown, “No do I look depress?” Ruby asked.
“Yes,” laughed Kenix. She handed Ruby, Lily and her leash, “Since you’re going out walk Lily, will ya?”
“Oh fine,” sighed Ruby. “I take a few days off to spend some quality time with my dear friend Kenix, but instead, she won’t feed me, and makes me walk the dog, what an inconsiderate friend.
Kenix looked at the bag Ruby was holding, “What’s in the bag?” she asked.
“Nothing really, just my dirty clothes from yesterday, I was planning to give it to you to wash for me,” announced Ruby.
“I don’t think so missy, do it yourself,” said Kenix.
Ruby nodded, “Don’t expect me back soon! I’m going to dognap Lily for the entire day,” declared Ruby, leaving the boutique.
Kenix shook her head, “That girl gets stranger everyday, one day she’s all sad and depressed, the next she’s all giddy and hyper,” she mumbled to herself.
Ruby left the boutique and pulled out her cell phone, she called her car’s computer, “Meet me at the corner of Main and Willow Tree,” announced Ruby.
“Voice check confirmed, will arrive in 5 minutes,” announced the car.
Ruby hung up her cell phone, she looked at Lily, “When was the last time we took you on a mission?” Ruby asked.
Lily just looked at Ruby confused.
“We’re going on a secret mission now, just me and you, okay?” Ruby asked.
Lily laid on her stomach by Ruby’s feet and covered her eyes.
“I’ll buy you McDonalds’,” announced Ruby.
Lily jumped up, and stood in sick’em mode.
Ruby laughed, “The only way to get you to co-operate is to bribe you with food.”
In five minutes the red convertible pulled up by the sidewalk. Both Ruby and Lily got into the car.

~Unique Law Firm~
“Cindy is Jessica in yet?” Louis asked.
“No, Miss Hsuan isn’t in yet,” answered Cindy, who was a secretary.
“Did she call in sick or anything? Is it the traffic?” Louis asked.
“Nope, no word from her yet,” replied Cindy.
Louis stared at the clock hanging on the wall, the hands seemed like it was moving in slow motion, not even a minute passed, he asked Cindy again, “No this isn’t good, look up Jessica’s file, and give me her address, I’ll go over there personally to check on her,” he announced.
At that moment they heard a loud bang, sounding like someone walked into the glass door. Louis and Cindy went out to see what happened, they came out and saw Jessica sitting on the floor, one hand rubbing her forehead while the other rubbed her back.
“Jessica?” Louis asked, looking at her. She was wearing a gray, business skirt suit today, her hair was tied neatly in a bun, and she had her sun glasses on.
Jessica looked up and saw Louis, “What the hell was that!” she exclaimed. “Whoa! Is it just me or did the foreigner become even more foreign? Why is everything so dark?” Jessica asked unaware of the fact that she had her sunglasses on.
Louis smiled, and walked over to her lending her his hand, to help her up.
Jessica smacked his hand away, “I don’t need your help,” she said, jumping up to her feet she started walking again, and once again banged into the glass door. “What the hell!” she exclaimed, touching the glass in front of her. “How the heck do I get inside? How did you get out?” she asked Louis.
Louis laughed, he walked up close to her, he was merely millimeters away from her, he brought his hands up to her chin and made her look up.
Jessica was afraid that he was trying to kiss her, “Louis Koo, I swear if you come an inch closer to me I swear I’ll sue your pants off!” declared Jessica.
Louis chuckled in amusement, “I don’t need an inch, just a millimeter and our bodies are right against each other,” he laughed. “And besides if you wanted my pants off, you don’t need to sue me for it, just ask,” he teased. He brought his face right next to hers, and smiled at her prevertedly.
“HEY!” exclaimed Jessica, too scared to move now.
Louis couldn’t help but crack up right in front of her face. “Cute, really cute,” he laughed. Her pulled her glasses off her face, with his right hand. “Here you go, hoped I brightened up your day,” he laughed handing her, her sun glasses, then walking away. He stopped at the glass door, turned to look at her, “The door knob is right here,” he said opening the door for her.
Jessica walked through the door, stopping beside Louis to stick her tongue out at him.
Louis was behind the glass and pretended to kiss her.
Jessica made a disgusted face and left.
Louis followed Jessica into her office and laid down on her couch.
“Do you mind?” she asked.
“Nope, not at all, I can stay here and keep you company all day,” he answered, putting his hands behind his head.
“What are you doing in here? Get out!” declared Jessica.
“That’s not very nice,” he said. “Ask me politely.”
“Get out please!” announced Jessica grinding her teeth together.
“Thanks for the offer, but I rather stay in here,” replied Louis.
“What do you want from me?” exclaimed Jessica, ready to pull out all her hair.
“Don’t get upset, it’ll give you wrinkles,” warned Louis.
Jessica closed her eyes and took a deep breath, “What would you like Mr. Koo?” she asked as politely as possible.
Louis looked at her and grinned, “That’s more like it,” he said. He sat up, and patted the seat next to him. “Come sit,” he said.
Jessica sat down beside him cautiously. Louis placed his right arm behind her on the couch. Jessica stared at his arm. “So…” he began.
“So what?” Jessica asked.
“This is a regarding to your lateness Miss Hsuan,” said Louis trying to sound professional. “Why were you late?” Louis asked.
Jessica looked at him unbelievably, “Because I over slept,” she said trying to smile.
“And why did that happen?” Louis asked.
“I got home late last night,” answered Jessica.
“Why? Who were you with? Were you on a date?” Louis questioned.
“What does my personal life have anything to do with you?” Jessica asked.
“I’m your boss I demand to know where were you last night. You come in late, meaning you can’t get your work accomplished in time, meaning you do poorly, and if you do poorly the firm will lose face,” announced Louis, in a stern, and serious face. “Now tell me!”
Jessica looked at him and started cracking up inside, “Yes I was with a guy, I real cute guy, we had dinner under the stars, and had a little too much wine, and you know,” she fibbed.
Louis’ expression became blank, he pointed at her, wanting to say something, but nothing came out. He stood up and left her office.
Jessica just watched him leave, she shrugged her shoulders and started doing her work.
All of a sudden Louis runs back into the room, “YOU WERE WITH A GUY! HOW COULD YOU BE WITH A GUY! WHAT KIND OF GUY? HOW LONG HAVE YOU KNOWN HIM? IS HE GOOD LOOKING? BETTER THAN ME? WHY WOULD YOU GO OUT WITH HIM RATHER THAN ME?” exclaimed Louis, angerily.
“Whoa, cool your jets Sparky, I was just kidding before, you saw me last night at the pub with my friends, we went out to celebrate our reunion, and I stayed out a little too late, so I woke up a little late,” she explained. “I don’t even know why I’m explaining this to you. Do you mind? I have work to do, or else the firm will lose face remember?” she reminded him.
Louis remembered he saw her last night and she was with a bunch of girls, he smiled and started laughing, he shook his finger at her, “You’re funny, real funny,” he laughed leaving her office and closing the door.
“Freak,” mumbled Jessica only loud enough so she could her herself.

Ruby parked her convertible by the beach, a few blocks away from the CIA building, she had changed into jeans and a white sleeveless shirt, that she had in the bag she was holding earlier. She opened the trunk to her car and pulled out a brief case, there were many high tech things in there. She took a tiny microphone and camera and stuck them onto Lily’s collar.
Ruby put on a microphone so she can communicate with Lily. She pulled out her utility belt which consist of many little gadgets that couldn’t be counted. There were things like pepper spray, smoke bombs, a mini hand held computer that was used to copy and download information and etc…
Ruby walked Lily down the streets to the CIA building. “Lily listen to me, only take action on my call, understand?” Ruby asked. “Now go,” said Ruby.
Lily ran into the building. Ruby stood across the street looking at her watch, out of the corner of her eye she saw Gillian walk into the building, at the same time she saw Andy Lau leave the building, she started his stopwatch. She ran behind the building, climbed up the fire escape, she climbed through the window and was on the sixth floor, she hid herself in a large crowd of CIA agents, who were all heading for lunch. She got into the elevator, with a group of people. It went down to the main floor, while in the crowd of people, Ruby managed to take someone’s pass. When everyone cleared out there were only one other person left on the elevator. Ruby looked at the person, and saw Gillian, Ruby immediately turned away so she wouldn’t be able to recognized her.
She heard Gillian use her phone.
“Hello Xin Ru? Where are you? Are you home or not? I’ve been looking for you, can you please call me when you hear this message,” Gillian hung up her phone, and looked around and saw Ruby. “You new here, I don’t think I’ve ever seen you around before,” she said.
Ruby disguised her voice, making it squeaking, she looked at the ground, “I’ve been here for two months, I’ve never seen you around either. You’re new, aren’t you?” she asked.
Gillian nodded.
The elevator stopped, “Here’s my stop, I’m leaving,” said Gillian.
“Bye take care,” Ruby whispered. “Don’t worry about your friend too much.”
Gillian smiled and got off the elevator.
Ruby let the elevator close, then immediately opened it, she stepped out of the elevator, and made sure Gillian was gone. She heard two people yelling at each other. Nosiness being her biggest character trait, she went to see what was going on.
Gillian entered the office at about 11:15, she looked tired and worried.
Edison immediately ran up to her and held her by her shoulders and started shaking her, “Please! I’m begging you, tell me where she is,” he said with hints of tears in his eyes.
Gillian shook her head, she pushed him away and sat down.
“Please, Gillian, I need to talk to her, I need to tell her I love her, that I’m sorry, I need her in my life,” announced Edison.
Gillian just laid her head on the table, as if staring out into space.
“GILLIAN TELL ME!” exclaimed Edison. “TELL ME WHERE XIN RU IS!”
“WILL YOU SHUT UP AND LET ME THINK?” exclaimed Gillian. “IF I KNEW WHERE XIN RU IS I WOULDN’T BE HERE TALKING TO YOU, I’D BE WITH HER!”
“What do you mean, if you knew where she was? Where’s my Xin Ru?” Edison asked.
“She didn’t come home last night, I waited for her in front of her door all night, but she didn’t come home,” replied Gillian.
“Maybe she stayed at her friend’s house,” answered Edison, trying to convince himself that she was alright.
“She has no other friends other than me, well none that I know of,” explained Gillian.
“Does she have a cell? Did you call it?” Edison asked.
“At least 1000 times last night,” answered Gillian.
“Give me her number,” declared Edison.
“You’re still thinking about wooing her at a time like this?” Gillian exclaimed.
“No,” answered Edison, “Well yes, but I know how to find her.”
“How?” Gillian asked.
“We can use the computer and locate her phone, or at least hear her conversations,” replied Edison, turning on the computer, and starting to type. “What’s her number?” he asked.
“416 789 5486,” answered Gillian.
Edison typed in the number and pressed enter, “Good, now it needs a few minutes to find her signal,” he announced.
They both sat there quietly.
Ruby quickly turned off her cell phone.
“What did you do to her?” Gillian asked. “If anything happens to her I swear I’ll…”
“Nothing’s going to happen to her, she’s going to be fine, she’s going to be fine,” he repeated. He was even more worried than Gillian.
“Do you really love her?” Gillian asked.
Edison nodded.
“What did you do to her though? Why does she have to hide her true self from everyone, why isn’t she going home? She’s never disappeared for an entire night before,” replied Gillian.
Edison felt guilty, it was all his fault that Xin Ru is missing. He thought of something, “Maybe she went to work,” he announced.
Gillian picked up the phone and dialed Ruby’s work number.
Jimmy picked up. “Hidy hoe,” he announced in his usual cheery tone.
“Who are you calling a hoe?” Gillian asked. “Who is this, who in there right mind would answer the telephone at work like that?”
“I…I…uhh…this is co-executive Jimmy Lin,” he answered with a hint of embarrassment in his voice.
“Oh, hi Mr. Lin,” said Gillian, who also felt embarrassed for saying that to him. “I’m Agent Gillian Chung.”
“Xin Ru’s friend,” answered Jimmy.
“Yes,” replied Gillian. “Mr. Lin…I…”
“Call me Jimmy,” he insisted.
“Alright Jimmy,” said Gillian, “I was wondering if Xin Ru was there.”
“No, sorry can’t help you there, she won’t be back until Monday,” answered Jimmy.
”Did Xin Ru, call you to tell you this?” Gillian asked.
“Umm…no she didn’t but she clearly announced it yesterday,” answered Jimmy. “Agent Chung, is there something wrong?” he asked.
“Call me Gill or Gillian,” replied Gillian. “The truth is Xin Ru didn’t come home last night, and she won’t pick up her phone, I was wondering, if she’s contacted you or not.”
Jimmy sighed, “I’m sorry Gill, she didn’t.”
“Oh,” answered Gillian, with no hope in her voice.
“What’s wrong?” he asked. “Is there something wrong? You don’t sound too hot.”
“It’s Xin Ru,” began Gillian, “She didn’t come home at all last night.”
“She didn’t?” Jimmy asked. “Where do you think she went?”
“I don’t know,” replied Gillian.
The search on the computer completed, the result was nothing, “Her battery must be dead!” announced Edison. “We can’t find her.”
“I need to go now, goodbye Jimmy,” Gillian said hanging up the phone.
“Gill…” but she already hung up. Jimmy sat down and thought about Xin Ru for a second. He was worried but not too worried. “She’s a big girl, I think she’s just hiding out for a while, beautiful girls do strange and mysterious things,” he said to himself. He got back to work, keeping himself busy.
Edison and Gillian were both worried, but no one was as worried as Edison.
Gillian studied Edison’s reactions, “He must really love her, to be this anxious and worried, but if a guy actually loved a girl that much, then how can he bring himself to hurting her?” she asked herself. “What did he do to her? Why did Xin Ru hate him so much?”
Ruby stared at Edison he looked so worried, he was a mess it broke her heart.
“Edison go wash your face,” Gillian said, “I’ll continue calling Xin Ru,” said Gillian.
Edison got up and left for the bathroom.
Ruby was in deep thought thinking about Edison, until someone bumped into her, she looked up and saw Edison. He didn’t look at her, he was too busy thinking about his beloved Xin Ru, he was too worried.
She heard Edison mumble a “Sorry, my bad,” then left.
“It’s okay,” replied Ruby, walking away.
Edison stopped, he somehow recognized her voice, he turned around and she was gone.
Ruby hid in a storage closet she spoke into her collar, “Lily seek’em now,” announced Ruby. She heard barking from outside, and knew Lily was running amuck on the sixteenth floor causing trouble. Ruby took this opportunity to run into Andy Lau’s office where all the evidence found yesterday was found. She looked in all the drawers and finally found the hologram; she copied the hologram onto her miniature hand held computer. All of a sudden she heard nothing, meaning Lily was caught. Outside she heard people greeting Andy Lau. As soon as the download was completed she crawled in the air vent above her head, dropping the hologram on the desk.
Andy entered and immediately noticed the hologram out of place, he called in his team into the room. Ruby was stuck, she was trapped, she couldn’t get out.
“Who was in here!” announced Andy.
No one said anything.
“What happened here?” Andy asked.
“There was a dog running amuck,” answered Gillian.
“Did anyone see anyone suspicious?” Andy asked.
Edison’s facial expression changed.
“Chen?” Andy asked. “Did you see someone, who shouldn’t have been here?”
“No…no sir…I was hallucinating,” replied Edison. “I…I bumped into a wall and got brain damaged,” he fibbed.
Andy glared at him.
“Sorry sir,” said Edison, saluting his captain.
Ruby giggled softly, as she saw Edison saluting Andy Lau.
“Close off all exits in this building without my permission no one leaves!” ordered Andy. “We have an intruder in the building.”
Ruby was stuck in the building for hours before she could’ve gotten free of the air vent.

~Kenix~
It was a slow day at , “Just For You,” so for some unusual reason Kenix had fallen asleep. Since the girls had stayed out so late the previous day.
Kenix was awaken by a loud knocking sound. “WHAT! WHERE’S THE FIRE!” exclaimed Kenix.
“Excuse me, I’d like to buy this bouquet if roses,” said a man in his late twenties.
Kenix sat up and yawned, “Ya, umm…$150,” said Kenix.
“That’s it?” he asked.
Kenix nodded, “Special for you today,” she announced, rubbing her eyes.
He smiled, “Here since you’re so nice, I’ll give you one,” he said, taking a rose out of the bouquet and putting it in her hair. “If you’re so tired, then close your boutique and get some rest, someone can easily rob you blind,” he teased.
Kenix nodded, “Uh huh, whatever, good bye come again soon.”
He paid for the roses, and left the store smiling, “Interesting girl,” he said to himself.
