Edison stood by the door of the apartment tapping his foot impatiently. His hair was spiked up like usual but looking neater. Wearing a black stylish tuxedo, it was rather long like a coat. The white shirt underneath was hung out loosely and on his neck hung a small and loose black tie. The warm breeze of the early evening blew softly on his hair and clothes.

The door opened and Charlene appeared with struggling attempt to balance on her high heels. Her hair was styled tightly hanging a few strands of fringe and the rest of her hair just spiked out messily in a good way. Underneath was a pure white dress with a halter neck and the bottom part blooms out akin to a flower. A plain dress it was but the affect was great, she looked rather angelic if only she didn’t pout.

“My feet hurt.” She whined stalking out stiffly. Her feet were slipped into a high heel sandal, the toes very low and the ankle high up supported by the stiff heels. For someone that doesn’t have experience would reckon it was difficult to walk on or even just stand on.

The warm weather was an advantage for her, no requirement for a jacket to mess her beautiful dress.

Edison grinned widely at Charlene wearing a formal dress. The hilarious thing was she still looks like a little girl. Unexpectedly he powerfully pulled Charlene till that she was standing beside him. With one arm orbit around her waist, he secured her balance as they stalked to his car.

Once again, Charlene felt security and reliability. Edison tends to always have that ability to spread this much importance to Charlene. Perhaps that was why she held a strong belief that they will be able to go to Italy together and study there, she also believe in a great future between them now.

The car drove to a parking lot by the shore. Yes that was correct, the ball wasn’t held in any particular ballroom but a cruise, which will sail around Hong Kong harbour while the students enjoy their time in there.

They proceeded towards the shoreline where the cruise was waiting. Many people was outside, some began entering already. Their presence caused a few people’s stare, mainly because Edison was with Charlene again, rather intimate as well. Even their close friends were confused.

Despite that Edison rather stay outside before the cruise actually starts leaving, instead for the sake of Charlene, he insisted to go inside with Charlene so that she could sit down because her feet was in major pain.

Inside the cruise, it was huge. It was decorated with fancy creamy items to add in a feeling of sophistication. The cruise was practically empty with only some waiters preparing the food. Some soft romantic music was playing in the background. The lighting was bright and sophisticated expressing some flavour

“I’m hungry, let’s start eating.” Charlene suggested eyeing the delicious food, her tongue hanging out in desire.

“Please no.” Edison pleaded, how embarrassing would it be for her to pig out when it the ball hadn’t even commenced, yet that was what he liked about her.

He ruffled his large hand into his pant pocket and finally took out a colourful wrapped lolly, one of Charlene’s favourite. Once Charlene saw, it brought back liveliness on her face as she immediately tore open the wrapper and placed it into her dry mouth. For awhile hunger was her little worry.

The ball didn’t officially start until the presence of everybody. It was delayed a little behind. Almost immediately, the cruise started moving departing from the shore to the further sea.

The warming up of the ball was some soft chatting and some brave people being the first to be dancing. Most people were drinking some cocktail while going through the buffet choosing food to occupy their stomach.

The two enthusiastic childlike couple was Edison and Charlene dominating over the food area scooping everything in their plates creating a commotion. Nobody bothered about them since it was a night of hype for them. It was something for them to remember in the future, because it was the last year of high school for them, almost an ending to one cycle of their life.

“Let’s try this.” Edison suggested spooning some unique looking pasta on both of their plates.

They proceeded to the round table that their friends already occupied and sat down savouring the delicious meals. Slowly people just stopped eating and arrive to the dance floor for a dance. Really even though the cruise was floating, they could barely feel it.

“Ate enough yet? Let’s dance.” Edison indicated eying so many people departing from their seats.

“My feet hurt. I don’t want to dance.” Charlene whined. No way will she step onto the dance floor, which she would believe was deliberately embarrassing herself because she never enjoyed dancing and always tripping over. Everybody will certainly laugh at her.

Without warning, Edison seized Charlene’s arm once he had the chance. Still chewing, Edison powerfully pulled her up completely towing her body to collide onto his. Charlene struggled to sit down again but Edison grip was far too strong pulling her to the dance floor.

He led her to a series of dance moves. She made attempt to leave but still couldn’t, especially with her shoes. She was easily moved by Edison due to her poor balance. The active Edison towed Charlene around the dance floor. The music was slow, Edison moved Charlene in a simple ballroom dancing, however a faster and more rhythmic action. It was like a parody of ballroom dances.

When Charlene warmed up, she really enjoyed it because it was quite funny and exciting with Edison’s silly behaviour.

He swayed her to one side and another; they were so clumsy that they persistently collided onto everybody else.

The tempo became faster as it goes on. Charlene laughed. The fun and the excitement that Edison provided her will never stop, it was persistent. That maybe was why she can never let him go.

The fun caused laughter to be released by Charlene’s mouth. Her childish laughter was a key to Edison’s open smile. For the sake of picking on Charlene again, he sped up even more fooling Charlene like she had lost control. It was mean but hilarious at the same time. As she laughed she hollered for Edison to stop.

The music paused; Edison at last released his grip. He laughed holding his stomach and grasping for air.

“You idiot, you were moving me like a doll.” She complained and slapped him softly, she had to admit that she enjoyed it.

Soon people started to orb around others, switching partners. So suddenly Edison was pulled away by somebody else and there stood Steven in front of Charlene waiting for her.

“I don’t want to dance anymore.” Charlene excused.

Her foot was hurting like hell. She suspected that there were some blisters growing on it because it was extraordinary painful and uncomfortable. Eying the others happily dancing, she heaved a sigh. She was bored now…

Feeling some slight cold breeze blowing on her bare skin, it was getting late, the temperature was cooling down. She turned around and realised it was from the doorway to the veranda. She had never been on such a fancy cruise, so it was interesting to admire the view of Hong Kong whereas the cruise was moving.

She stood by the edge with her head tilted up; closing her eyes she absorbed the nature’s breeze and the sound of splashing water. The cruise was beautiful with complex facility. The serene scene was like the time in Shanghai. However when it struck her mind, she jumped a little remembering the fall into the water and the death of her twin brother.

Looking downwards, she shivered even more. It felt like the temperature was dropping to negative Celsius. She stared at the water rippling and the distortion of her face, if she continues to stare with concentration, she may fall into a world of the past.

Fortunately a jacket was covered over her shoulder interfering her from thinking further. Her body felt a lot warmer and her body wasn’t shivering as much. Charlene shakes her head to wake herself up and turned around finding Edison standing there with only the white shirt and tie.

“Seem like somebody only likes to dance with me.” Edison teased.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The cruise was back to shore. People walked out onto the deck in the night sky. The above were fading stars sparkling like crystals and the moon glowing. The excitement wasn’t yet over for they still have an after party in a restaurant nearby.
“Let’s have a walk on the beach.” Charlene suggested to Edison, the sandy area wasn’t far away, Edison agreed.
Still carrying Edison’s coat, they stepped through the deep sandy beach with difficulty. Each step, they imprinted a mark as their heels dug onto the soft sand. Charlene halted to a located and bent down to take of her shoes, she felt the danger of twisting her ankle standing on the sand with high heel.
“Much more comfortable.”
They approached the water area where small waves of water trembled on the sand blowing back out like a forever pattern. Charlene holding her shoes stood by the water feeling the cold water touching her flesh, giggling every time it touches.
“I remember last time you took me to the beach and you were telling me about you and your dad’s relationship. That time you were so sad.” Charlene recorded.
Edison softly kicked some above Charlene’s ankle, he laughed softly, “Oh yeah I still remember. Why did I take you anyways?” He questioned scratching his head.
“You poo, you don’t even know then how am I suppose to know?” Charlene questioned.
So unexpectedly, not even Edison realise his action, he hugged Charlene tightly. He missed the warmth she spread out and the sentiment that only someone he truly like could give to him.
“What’s wrong?” Charlene questioned chuckling softly at the sudden force.
When they were finally having some fun, Edison’s mobile rang. He answered it while Charlene remained silent.
“Hello, Stephy? Oh crap. Sorry, I’ll be here soon. I forgot.” He hung and spun to Charlene feeling guilty.
“You have to go? Don’t worry about me. I’ll go to the after party myself. Don’t keep Stephy waiting.” Charlene said forcing a generous smile, but one thing she was quite certain was that for now nothing was more important than Stephy for Edison, even if it was because of pity. Even if she understood him, she still couldn’t suppress the little amount of disappointment.
In the darkness alone, she walked to the bright restaurant located on the concrete path, not far away to the after party. She was now by herself.
Edison waved to her and walked away to his car. He didn’t really want to leave Charlene but he knew his priority for now, Stephy was first. Not who he loves first but she was still first because he pitied her. He was grateful that Charlene was that generous and he continue to tell himself that, suffering for now, in the future they can be in Italy together without regrets or guilt.
He arrived to the road of Stephy’s apartment complex. She already stood there waiting plastered on her face was a cheerful and patient smile. She was wearing a formal dress in order to match with Edison’s formal wear.
“Sorry to keep you waiting.” Edison apologized sincerely when Stephy entered the car.
“That’s alright. I’m glad that you are still willing to take me out this late.” She said giggling.
“Where’s your coat?” She asked randomly.
“Oh, gave I to Charlene coz she looked cold.” He revealed and then laughed nervously realising who he was talking to.
Stephy shrugged, she knew so well that she was no longer the one that was in Edison’s heart, “Where are we going?” She asked.
“I was thinking of Desert House.” Edison said.
“Really? Do you remember that place was the first time we met?” She said giggling happily.
“Yeah. That time you were so energetic and we had a fight too I remember. You almost wanted to slap me.” He said laughing hilariously.
They arrived to the little restaurant accompanied by other shops. The restaurant was quite miniature yet very cutely decorated.
The two realised nothing really had changed, the decorations, the renovations and the people too. Edison hadn’t been back there after the departure of Stephy and this time coming back, the past really came back to them.
“Can we please sit on that table?” Edison requested pointing to the one in the corner; it was the table they normally sat on.
“Nothing really changed here but I guess many people around me changed a lot like you. I don’t know whether if it’s only towards me or not but you are so different now. You are so much more caring. Did Charlene really affect you that much?” She indicated with a small smile sipping some cold drinks.
“I don’t know… are you angry at me though that I didn’t wait for you?”
“Nope, I would be if I wasn’t dying but I am not because if you did wait for me then I will feel very guilty for shattering your wait since I am going to die anyways.”
