Monday was a great day for Charlene because Edison obviously didn’t attend school again; including that half of Edison’s group also didn’t, their group was less active and less annoying towards Charlene. It happened once again on Tuesday.
Although the new school year only started for less than a month, Missy Yeung began to suspect. Like a pattern, Edison was absent two or three times a week and normally Steven in the same form class was absent too.
“Does anyone know what is wrong with Edison and Steven? They are always absent.” Professor Yeung inquired.
Visibly everybody knew that they wagged school, it was what they did since the first year of high school. Nevertheless everybody knew better not to comment or expose the truth; it was like a rule that everybody mind their own business and doesn’t comment. Especially when it comes to Edison, nobody dared to offend him as there were too many people supporting him.
Everybody didn’t reply, only a few shrugs or the shake of the head. While Charlene glanced around the room, she was tempted to tell to get them in trouble. Stuttering as she speaks, she started of, “I know why it’s because –“
“It’s because they are sick.” Yumiko interrupted nudging Charlene strongly on her arm.
Charlene eyed her evilly, “If you tell the truth, you will get yourself in trouble.” Yumiko muttered.

That day after school Charlene went into ‘CitySuper!’ alone to purchase some junk food to be stored at home. Carrying her colorful backpack, she strolled into the food area, which was the ground floor. In her hand was also a red plastic grocery basket to store her groceries.
She skipped around storing all sorts of chips and candies in her basket capturing attention by her craziness, which didn’t bother her or she was just too oblivious of it.
Coincidentally Edison and his good friend Nicholas were also there. They walked around casually and purposely causing trouble to the customers or the staffs, yet nobody tend to complain, they were all rather afraid. Although it was a school day, the two only wore casual and baggy looking clothes… obviously they hadn’t attended school.
“Look, that’s Charlene.” Nicholas mentioned as they walked into the row that Charlene was in.
Just that mentioned, Edison’s eyes brightened with new excitement. He approached her silently and easily without her realizing and pulled her two little piggy tails taking off the two pink plastic ball hair ties.
“Ahh!” Charlene screeched and spun around knocking whoever was behind her by her elbow.
She was a bit slow and didn’t look directly in front of her, which was where Edison stood close by. Instead she was looking further away. Until she was about to turn back, she caught sight of Edison and Nicholas.
“What do you two want? Give me back my hair tie.” Charlene demanded.
Unexpectedly, Edison actually pulled out his hand offering back her hair tie. She stared at him for a long time and slowly reached her hand to obtain it. Just as she was about to touch it, Edison clapped his hands together and pulled away, “Say please.” He mimicked, in fact he was imitating Charlene because that was what she normally does to him.
“Please…” Charlene said softly, her cheeks flushed in annoyance.
“Good girl.” Edison mocked patting her on the head, she immediately pushed him away.
“Only useless people have that much time to do this stupid stuff.” Charlene said angrily.
He could only laugh at the comment and nonchalantly took a packet of chips on the shelves. He opened the packet offering some to Nicholas.
That time a staff walked passed, seizing the chance, Charlene attempted to disgrace Edison, “Excuse me sir. Look what they are doing. They are eating it without paying.” She said.
The staff stared at her bluntly, “So?” He questioned with a frown.
By the side, Edison and Nicholas continued to choke with laughter watching Charlene using so much effort to cause them trouble. It was hilarious because because she had no idea that Edison’s dad was the boss of the place.
“What do you mean so? He is considered as stealing by the law!” Charlene exclaimed.
“What are you talking about? His dad is the boss here.” The staff replied.
Defeated by the reply, she hadn’t recovered from the shock. She stood there like a statue, she was embarrassed and like she expected Edison will laugh at her and have something new to tease her about.
“Are you alright dear?” Edison asked as he laughed clinging his arm around Charlene’s shoulder again.
“Go away. You stink.” She pouted.

“How funny is that? Oh she must have been so embarrassed.” Steven said, along with Edison they began laughing while entering the classroom.
“Hell she was. Said that I stink afterwards.” Edison said rolling his eyes.
Today they were early for once, before the professor arrives. Most eyes in the classroom turned to them. They were obviously very popular, especially amongst the girls. If they were early, it normally meant harassment to Charlene.
The classroom as usual was a mess. Scrunched paper balls and paper planes flew across the room, the noise was unbelievably deafening.
“Good morning!” A girl greeted pleasantly becoming all intimate towards Edison.
“Looking good today Gloria.” Edison flirted back; the compliment gave Gloria confidence so she flapped her hair to show off.
They walked passed Gloria and emerged towards Charlene. Edison sat on the table that Charlene was leaning on. Steven stood by the side, “Hey sweetie.” He said.
He was annoying to her and he knew it, that was his aim, it was to annoy her. Charlene pulled her ear plug off and eyed him menacingly, “Yes? What do you want?” She asked coldly.
“Have you caught anybody stealing lately?” Edison asked and Steven laughed continuously.
“I also wondered how you know so much about the law.” Steven teased.
This time she had enough of their remarks and she was sick of it, she stood up immediately frightening Edison and Steven. Her expression soon displayed fury, it was scrunched up. Her eyes looked wet like she was about to cry, her mouth was pressed together sign of real anger. It scared them, tears was their weaknesses.
Steven and Edison eyed each other with regret, it wasn’t their first time to make girls cry and each time they do, it was frightening. Even if Charlene hadn’t shown tears, but her serious face was enough evidence of later tears.
Luckily Yu quickly reacted, snuggled closely to Charlene and comforted her pushing her to sit down. She roughly waved her hand to them to leave. Obediently, dominant by guilt they found their seat near the back.
“Edison, you made a girl cry again.” Steven whispered quietly.
“I didn’t know that she will be so serious.” Edison retorted glancing over to Charlene once in a while.
He took out a pen and naturally scribbled some words down on a piece tear paper. Without consideration, he already knew what to write, he expertise in it.

He gathered the piece of paper by his fist and casually scrunched it together. The ball of paper soon landed on Charlene’s head dropping onto the ground.
Surprised by the paper because the professor just entered the room, she slowly took it from the ground, by then the class were silent after their greetings. Everybody sat down but they were still fidgeting with their own business.
She gently and quiet tear open the paper, it became a rather dented paper, the outcome of the scrunch ball. Unfortunately the professor saw and seized the paper off her hand before she even read it.
“What’s this? Love note?” The professor questioned. Her tone was harsh and irritated.
From afar Edison watched in humiliation hoping that she won’t read it out to the class. He was wrong however because the professor began to announced the note in mocking tone although she was confused by the slangs used.
By the time the note was in establishment, the entire class laughed in amusement at the overly exaggerated sweetness of Edison’s words. Even Charlene laughed along, she laughed because Edison was humiliated and laughed at Edison’s weakness along with Edison’s words that he would use to flirt with girls.
Professor Yeung upset Edison, he leaned his head onto his arm cursing her softly, he was thinking of a way to revenge on the teacher.

Recess arrived, students rushed in and out from the cafeteria to purchase food. Some even sat down onto the table, yet it was rather empty since it wasn’t lunch time.
Holding a container of ‘Vita Soya Milk’, Charlene sipped through the straw as she walked out to the two door exit along with Joey.
“Oh no Joey! Let’s wag school, I am not looking forward to the next few lectures, I don’t have any free period today and plus I don’t want to see Edison, I have a few lessons with him later on.” Charlene complained.
Laughing at her complaints, Joey agreed. They went to their locker by the hallway and took the items they required to take home. Soon they were down the school yard; slowly they rustled behind a dozen of bushes. Behind it was a huge wall, something was special was that one wall had some sharp carving of steps for students to reach the top and jump down.
“Why do we have to go through this way? Last year we just jump out the exit.” Charlene cried.
“After Edison and Nicholas got caught later last year, everybody is much stricter now. They all watch carefully there.” Joey explained.
Confused by what she was meant to do, Joey swiftly ran, stepping on the sharp carved steps and landed to the top, immediately jumped down. Joey was no longer in sight. Hesitated, Charlene stood their, her legs weakening by the height, she was afraid of height since young. Breathing in a few air of wisdom, she jogged to the steps and tried climbing up; she failed by the lack of confidence.
Once again she tried, this time she ran faster and held tightly taking each steps carefully. Her feeling was like rock climbing, even more dangerous because there were nothing to tie her. She reached the top, to ensure her not to fall she quickly landed at the top, without warning she slipped falling down, there were no balance in her, she was falling from the head.
The gravity was pulling her down. She screamed terribly, her heart almost leaped out, any second she could fall to the concrete ground, she didn’t want to imagine the consequences that will take place, she was afraid and she was falling in mid air.
She felt herself touching end, unlike the solid ground, it was strong and firm. Slowly opening her eyes, her head was against something soft like human skin that she was in contact with.
Eyebrows turned to a frown, her head tilted eye to eye with Edison. His expression was in pain, mouth opened almost yelling out in pain.
In fact Charlene landed successfully onto Edison, she was now on top of him. Both their arms spread apart, heads pressing against each other.
Joey immediately rushed over to help them up. She dragged Charlene up and brushed the dirt off her clothing, “Are you hurt?” She asked in concern.
On the other hand, Edison had to get up himself whilst Nicholas only stood aside in laughter, “This is fate.” He said.
Edison’s legs stiffened and his muscles ached in pain. But the playful him was in fact laughing because it was Charlene, something new to tease her about.
“You are so damn heavy.” Edison stated, he wasn’t standing up straight after being collided by another human being.
The statement was ignored. Charlene stared at Joey for an explanation of why her boyfriend and Edison was there, “I didn’t know they were wagging as well… I didn’t arrange this.” Joey said innocently.
At least Charlene successfully hurt Edison, an accidental revenge
Neglecting Charlene, Nicholas held Joey’s hand and pulled her as they walked to a fast food store, “Joey, I don’t want to go with them…” Charlene pleaded, sadly Joey was already too far away and the only person that heard it was Edison who smirked at her.
