Charlene became Edison’s biggest motivation. For her, he was willing to wake up early in the morning just to take Charlene to school without being late. There he walked out from his car, eyes closed by the power of the vivid sun including the fact that he wasn’t completely awoken. Charlene soon accompanied his side; together they neared the entrance of the school.
“I want to sleep.” Edison complained gripping, his fingers entangled between Charlene’s.
“Then you should sleep earlier. We have school. Come one.” Charlene said.
She pulled Edison along, forcing him to follow reluctantly. By the time they entered the school, Charlene let go of his hand consciously, “I don’t think we should tell anyone about this yet…” Charlene reasoned.
“Why not? I want to tell everybody that you are my girl though!” Edison cried.
Indeed Charlene had great reasons for it. Firstly she hated being teased by friends because she has a boyfriend and secondly many people in school were somehow collected to Charlene’s parents. She feared for her parents to find out, thinking to a rather exaggeration, they may even disown her.
Kenny and Steven soon approached them staring at them with a frown, “A girl and a boy that is always together… hmmm…” They were hinting to the fact that it seem like the two were a couple, which was in fact true.
Nobody yet knew that they were officially together, they were maybe a bit indistinct but they didn’t tend to realise.
Later on the day, school was over. In the locker area, Charlene crouched up to reach her book, whilst below her was Joey kneeling down packing her own things. Their bottom snuggled out revealing a curve.
Passing by was the well known pervert of their junior. His eyes twitched displaying a rather cheeky smirk. Slowly approaching them from behind, he took out his hand and pinched Charlene on the bottom.
“AH!” Charlene yelped immediately, she unexpected such a ruthless act from anyone.
Spinning around she was faced to face with the school pervert, “You… you … pervert!” She screamed frightened and disbelieved.
Her desire watching the smirk on his face, she wanted to punch him or even kill him. Her wish was granted when Edison approached the boy in fury. He witnessed the entire scene while heading towards Charlene.
With preparation Edison tackled the boy. He fell onto the floor. Apparently the boy had a rather petite figure, looking rather weak. He didn’t even fight back, like a girl he only screamed.
“You f*cken b*st*rd.” Edison shouted.
Despite that her wish was granted, she didn’t want Edison in trouble. She tried pulling Edison away along with Joey. Sense feeling of delight though deeply carved in her heart, this was like a test to prove that Edison cared.
They were in the centre of attention, surrounded by unfamiliar faces of students from all years, young to small they were there watching the fight chanting as it progress to even more violent.
“Stop this immediately Edison Chen!” A stern voice of a man said calmly, with his arms he pulled Edison away with real strength, he was powerful indeed being the physical education teacher.
“He freaken tried to molest Charlene!” Edison explained, breathing inwards, unsatisfied.
The perverted male was bruised all around consist of bleeding arm. He quickly stood up moving as far as possible from Edison, frightened by his action.
“I don’t care. You three must go to the senior coordinators office with me immediately.” He commanded indicating Edison, Charlene and the pervert.
Standing in front of the desk of the strict coordinator, the heat of the heater fanned at them. It was hot whilst the staffs wore one layer; the three students wore two or even more layers. Perspirations were forming, especially on the pervert that was frightened; his forehead clearly displayed a crystalline droplet of contaminated perspiration.
“So Charlene, you are the most innocent here. Is it true that he came and pinched you on the bottom?” The co-ordinator asked.
Hesitant to answer such a humiliating question, Charlene slowly nodded her head, “And then Edison you tackled Deep for her?” The coordinator continued to question.
“Missy, he was the one who did such a rude act. Why shouldn’t I tackle him?” Edison replied nonchalantly.
Half an hour past, the problem was solved with Deep’s parents contacted about it. Edison though was also punished for using violence, for two days, he will have to stay late at school to copy the school rules.
Outside the staff room of the teachers, Charlene and Edison stood there staring down the building at the school yard a few floors away. With their hands gripping the barrier, silence subsided in them. The feeling of guilty penetrated into Charlene. She was the cause for the two days detentions for Edison. Their relationship was less than a week and something already occurred testing them.
“Sorry. It’s my entire fault.” Charlene finally said softly, her hands patted Edison’s hand softly.
She thought Edison was upset with her. Luckily as his face was plastered with a sweet smile, it erased her heart’s worry. Bringing Charlene’s arm across, he spun her body slowly snuggling closely to her. They were there embraced comfortably, like all worries was lifted away from their body.
“Why sorry? I should do that. If I didn’t, I will be the one that’s apologizing.” He said softly.
Whistles of a teasing tune disturbed the peaceful silence. Their group of friends apparently hadn’t gone home yet and was there to see them. Approaching them, they saw the two hugging sweetly. They discovered from then that in fact there weren’t just friendship between the two.
“We were right.” Kenny said, with his five fingers spread out, his palm hitting Steven palm for that they guessed correctly.
Removing from their hugs, Charlene was reluctant to face them. Her cheeks flushed with redness. Especially that Joey was also there, and Joey never knew about it.
“No wonder Edison was all annoyed just then! You two didn’t even tell us about this relationship? What kind of friends are you two?” Joey asked, her lips pouted. Charlene expected that their reaction would be like that.
“It was Charlene’s idea.” Edison said with laughter, joyously, he was delighted that everybody knew. He never enjoyed hiding his relationship in the dark.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next day, Charlene took the bus home. Leaning by the window of the bus, her eyes wandered aimlessly outside spotting her reflection at all time, therefore a smile remained on her face because she didn’t enjoy witnessing herself having a grim expression.
The car halted by the red light, beside the bus was a silver convertible that also stopped. The convertible’s ceiling was opened clearly showing the passengers inside. What attracted her attention was her mother that was on the passenger seat with a male driver, who Charlene addressed as ‘Uncle’. The shocking reality that hit her was her mother leaning over to the male kissing him briefly on the cheek. Then their hands were locked together waiting for the light to change colour.
Every noise was blocked away from her. Like she became death and she couldn’t sight anything but the scenes of what she witnessed. Her heart beat fastened realising the truth. It hurts and she didn’t want to face it. How could she ever face the fact that her mum was with another man?
Arriving home, her mum was already home reading a novel on the couch. She had already changed into her pyjamas.
“You’re home.” She said sweetly.
“Did you go anywhere today?” Charlene asked testing her.
“Uh – no. Stayed home the entire day reading novels and watching television.” Her mum replied, which was words of deceiving.
“Mum, are you and dad really going to divorce? Don’t you two even love each other?” Charlene cried.
“Honey, I think it’s time for me to tell you something. You are still young and believe in the words of true love and that love lasts for an eternity. But it’s time for me to tell you that it doesn’t. True that your dad and I once thought we were deeply in love, we married and had you. But as times passes, we just realises how incompatible we are together. Instead of dragging our happiness away, we might as well divorce because we know we can’t live with each other for the rest of our lives.” Her mum spoke softly.
Those words were meant to be words of confrontation including a touch of comfort and apology. But Charlene couldn’t feel it, she shake her head unbelievably, “Don’t lie to me. It’s because of another man isn’t it? I saw you and uncle in a car together just then! You kissed him!” Charlene shouted.
Tears threatened to slip from her eyes. Fear was in her, she wanted her parents to stay together as a complete family. She didn’t want to stay with one for a month and the other for another month. She hated that plan, which may become her future. She hopes that her mum may deny it or give an explanation, instead her mum only sat there shocked without any reply.
“I hate you!” She shouted running out the house along with her school bag.
She became lost in her own City of Hong Kong. Noway was she going home facing her parents. They hurt her lots. Barrier and hatred was growing from within. She hated them for moving on so quickly. She was really lost and alone.
Luckily when the time she needed it, Edison rang up and came to pick her up knowing she had been crying.
The silent ride leaded her to Edison’s house, which she never expected, “Where is this place?” She asked quietly gazing at the western style mansion with its private yard.
“My house. Since you don’t want to go home for the night so I figure that my house is the best place to go.” Edison explained, seeing the horror of Charlene he quickly laughed, “My house is big. There are two empty rooms.”
Entering the massive house, Charlene scanned around facing some extremely expensive antiques and expensive technologies. She rarely had been to a house as big as this. Sliding his arm around Charlene’s waist, Edison led her to the lounge where he was faced with his step mum and another girl that was sitting on the sofa.
“Theresa?” He greeted to the young girl, approximately the same age as Charlene as she nodded with a sweet smile.
Her hair was the length to her shoulder. The bottom layer was red whilst the top layer was brown. Her eyes were rather small but held great chemistry.
“My niece just came back from America.” His step mother informed eying Charlene unpleasantly.
Edison ignored her words, instead faced the servant, “Maria, please set a bedroom my friend here. She’s stay here for tonight.” Edison ordered.
“There’s only one spare room and there’s no bed since Theresa is here.” His step mum interfered with a hideous smirk.
“Edison, don’t worry about it.” Charlene whispered to his ear. She could feel the tension between the two. It was rather uncomfortable standing there. That family she thought was very odd, the house was big but it wasn’t warm.
“What do you mean by don’t worry? You can sleep in my room tonight.” He said hoarsely dragging Charlene along with her up the stairs as Theresa eyed their shadows disappearing.
Entering Edison’s room, it gave an impression of a miniature house. It had everything from the bathroom to the entertainment technologies and the sofa. It was completely huge, adding up; it was bigger than her lounge.
Edison came back in handing her a set of pyjamas that he borrowed from Theresa and she went into the bathroom for a warm shower, “Don’t peek!” Charlene warned.
“Don’t worry I will.” Edison joked.
That night, the two of them completed their homework on the bed together. Sometimes with trouble, they asked each other. Obviously though it was normally Charlene that knew most of the answer.
“I know! Since the holiday is coming up and after it, it’s the exams. You can become my tutor until the exam and I’ll pay you back 100 dollars an hours [HK money].” Edison said.
“Are you trying to pay me money so I can spend some time with you?” Charlene joked.
On the bed, he sat up with leg crossed and snuggled his face inward to Charlene’s neck, “Just taking the advantage that I have a nerdy girlfriend.” He teased, receiving a hit on the chest in return.
“Since you are so cool and I am such a nerd. I should leave.” Charlene excused and like expected Edison held her back apologizing heaps pleading her not to leave.
That night, they hardly exited the room. Either they were studying or watching the television. Knowing that Charlene was depressed, Edison never bothered to ask about it. It wasn’t because he didn’t care. In contrast it was because he cared too much. If Charlene really wanted to tell him, she would of already. Curiosity was never his nature.
“Why don’t you ask me why I cried?” Charlene suddenly blurted out.
“I don’t want to force you to tell me anything. If you really wanted to tell me then I will listen and if not I won’t be nosy.” He replied, the answer was very satisfying to Charlene because she lived her life with similar principle and attitudes. Maybe she thought it was one reason of why they matched.
