Chapter 1

Good bye (A Sylvester Tribute)

I got the inspiration while watching the closing act. Man, I cried like hell!

----------

The pain that has once caught me came back. I knew what it meant. I knew my condition was getting worse. After so long why must the pain come back? I ignored the pain. I looked over my shoulder and saw Taufik. He was humming a tune I didn’t really catch. Then some one tapped my shoulder.

“Sly?” Olinda faced me. “You’re gonna rock the house down tonight. Don’t worry too much.”

“You too…” I managed to say.

“Arh? No la. I steady pom-pi-pi one. Hee~” She grinned.

I continued in my daze as she walked over to Taufik. Left alone in the corner, I just didn’t think I was going to fare well today. The performance today was as painful as the practices.

Being chosen for the finals, that was the greatest thing that has ever happened to me.

Days of practice, interviews and promo’s went on smoothly. With the number of pills that I take everyday,
I’m surprised that I still haven’t got addicted to them.

“What that you eating?” Taufik queried as he pointed to the blue pillbox I had in my hand.

“Vitamins.” I lied. It was hard for me to fabricate a lie. But he seemed to have taken it in.

It was just too good to last. The day for the Finals were here. Nervous and excited at the same time, I could hardly contain myself. The crowd was euphoric. Gurmit was mad.

“Hey, if I make it to Singapore Idol, I want you to sing with me.” Taufik smiled. “Hope you’ll do the same.”

“I will…” I smiled back. It wasn’t an answer. It was a promise.

The both of us performed. The 9 finalists performed too. And even Dick Lee performed, that was something new.

Finally it came to the climax of the show. The results. After a long silence, Gurmit finally revealed the winner.

“TAUFIK! YOU ARE THE FIRST SINGAPORE IDOL!!!” He yelled followed by the excited screams from the crowd. Taufik and pulled into a group hug. I could hear him muttering his prayers. These 10 seconds seemed like forever.

It was time for Taufik to close the show. “I dream.”

A small smile formed on my face as I watched how well Taufik connected with the audience. I was in a daze again. I didn’t realize Taufik walking towards me. Almost done with the chorused he mouthed. “Sing with me…”

I shot him a grateful smile as took it off from where Taufik left it. I looked into the crowd as the music flowed freely filling every dark corner of the stadium with tunes and tones of our own. With a gentle tap on the shoulder, Taufik took over.

The song ended with a beautiful serenade.

My dream came true.

A sudden pain came back. My visions blurred.

“Sly, Sly! Sly, are you all right!” A masculine voice called out for me. The sound of the chattering audience suddenly faded.

No. No… Death, I can’t leave now. Let me have my last few moments here.

I fell with a loud thump, collapsing into darkness.

It was al I wanted.

“Hold on!” Another voice rung in my reverie.

I had my timed. I had my life liven up to it’s fullest.

I left with no regrets.

The line went straight as the deafening tone rung in their ears. Taufik rushed up to the glass panels, smashing it hard.

“Taufik… please.” Olinda called out. “He’s gone.”

Taufik slowly slid down, falling on his knees. Memories all flashing through his mind. Six months created an unbreakable bond between all of us.

I gazed at them from the other end of the hallway. I knew they couldn’t see me but I still have to bid them the last good bye.

“Good bye…”
