Chapter 9

Rollin' Good Times Part 2 (Daphne Tribute)

“How can you not tell me something so important?! Do you know how embarrassed I was just now?” Daphne hollered over the phone. Olinda just sheepishly laughed.

Christopher peeked in. “Is everything all right?” Beverly looked pretty clueless in his arms too.

“Yes. Every. Thing. Is. All. Right.” Daphne tried to calm herself down.

“Okay…” Christopher left. After the footsteps became silent Daphne continued.

“You’re evil you know that…”

“Aiya… My cousin very cute right.” Olinda chuckled. “Guess what. He’s available.”

“Olinda!”

“Okay! Okay! I’m sorry la. I thought it wasn’t important. Okay okay… I’ll pay you another 30 bucks okay. Please don’t leave… I suck at baby sitting.”

“Okay. I won’t but what if he-“

“Aiya, Christopher so innocent. He won’t do anything to you one la.”

Daphne shook her head. “All right. I’m staying for the sake of the kids. I bet Chris doesn’t know a single thing about children.”

[Christopher]

“I bet Christopher doesn’t know a single thing about children.”

I exchanged looks with Sylvester and Taufik, okay. An evil glint in our eyes. We have telepathic powers. They could read my mind. I knew we had the same sentiments.

I peeked at Daphne, who was looking rather tired and upset about Olinda not telling her about my existence. My gaze diverted to Sylvester and Taufik.

“We’re going to have a little bit of fun…”

I swore. Even Beverly was giggling.

“Here’s the plan.”

--------

Later that night,

While the boys were in the living room occupying the playstation, Daphne was upstairs feeding Beverly. The rain tip-tapped gently against the windowpanes.

“Hey, now?” Sylvester eagerly asked.

Christopher shook his head. “Nope… not now.”

“WAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!” A loud wail sounded.

“Okay, that’s the cue. Go now!” Christopher chuckled as Taufik and Sylvester ran upstairs. With that he proceeded to disappear from the living room.

“Beverly… why did you suddenly cry? Are you all right? Are you sick?” Daphne mentally slapped herself for not paying attention when Christopher showed her around the house earlier that afternoon. Where’s the thermometer? She approached the stairs and saw Sylvester and Taufik.

“Daffy Jie jie… I’m hungry.” Sylvester looked up at Daphne.

“But you just had dinner half an hour ago.”

Taufik chuckled. “He didn’t! He threw it away!”

“Sylvester!” Daphne’s brows creased. “How could you play with your food.”

“I like what.” Sylvester acted smug. “If you don’t want to cook okay. I’ll go find Christopher-kor to buy me supper.”

Sylvester walked away.

“Hey! Wait for me!” Taufik trotted behind. In Daphne’s arm Beverly continued crying.

“Please… stop crying…” Daphne pleaded. “Pleasee…”

Beverly stopped for a moment. Before Daphne could sigh in relief, she started wailing even louder.

Daphne walked down wanting to rest on the couch. “Hush now…” She rocked bev. “Want me to tell you a story?”

Beverly didn’t stop. Daphne was beginning to worry now.

“Christopher! Christopher! Where’s the thermometer. I think Beverly is sick!” She hollered.

No reply.

“Sylvester! Taufik!” She called again.

No reply.

“Oh no.” she thought to herself.

This mansion was big. She quickly rushed into the kitchen, searching for the first aid box. As soon as she saw the thermometer in the cabinet, Beverly stopped crying. She was now sound asleep in her arms. Daphne had a puzzled look.

“Oh well. I should be putting her back at the cott then.”

After putting Beverly in the cot. She suddenly thought about Sylvester.

“I’d better fix something for him to eat.” She thought to herself. After spending a few minutes in the kitchen, she laid some sausages on the table.

“Sylvester!” She called out. “Supper’s ready!”

The mansion suddenly seemed so quiet. She was getting scared. She tried searching around for the two toddlers. She peeked behind every door in search for them, only to find Christopher sleeping in his room.

“Hey…” Daphne slightly shook him. “Wake up…”

“Huh?” Christopher groggily looked at her.

“Have you see Sylvester and Taufik?”

“I thought they were with you.” Christopher feigned ignorance.

“Oh no.” Daphne panicked. “I’ve searched the whole mansion. I can’t see them anywhere!”

Christopher rubbed salt into the wound. “Oh no… You lost him! It’s raining outside, where can he go?”

Daphne anxiously looked at Christopher. Just then, Taufik ran in.

“Daffy! Christopher! Sylvester’s missing!!!”

Daphne nearly collapsed hearing Taufik’s words. While she was busy hallucinating about the worst, Christopher winked at Taufik.

“What happened?” Christopher asked.

Taufik sniffled. “We were playing hide-and-seek and then I just couldn’t find him. When I walked out, I saw this.” Taufik held up a blue watch.

“It’s Sylvester’s! My mum got him that for his birthday last birthday.” Christopher hollered.

“Oh my God… Sylvester!” She dashed out of the house. “SYLVESTER!” The gates were open. She collapsed on her knees, the rain falling, drenching her body.

Christopher gazed at her from behind. Something just made him walk out of the house, an umbrella above his head. He stood to shield Daphne from the rain. Daphne didn’t stop crying. Christopher knelt down, feeling guilty about what he has done.

Daphne eyed him. Her hands suddenly flung her arms around his neck, crying like it was the end of the world. Just then, laughter’s sounded.

“Hey! We did a great job!” Sylvester appeared standing beside Taufik at the door.

Daphne froze. Her eyes fixed on Sylvester who was well and dry. She pulled away from Chris, her face now clearly shown fury.

“It was only a-“

“YOU JERK!” Daphne pushed him away running back in.

“Daphne!” Christopher chased after her. Only to be greeted with a loud slam of the door. “I’m sorry!” He shouted.

“Horrr…” Sylvester and Taufik chorused. “You’re in trouble.”

Christopher swallowed a thick lump in his throat. “Oops.”

That night Christopher could sleep. Guilt was getting the better of him and he just didn’t know why. He thought about that time Daphne suddenly wrapped her arms around him, and he could help but smile. Daphne really cared for the kids, Christopher could clearly see that. He cursed himself for being such a jerk to scare Daphne like that.

For not, he just hoped Daphne would forgive him the next morning.

“Kor,” Sylvester pulled Christopher’s jacket sleeve. “It’s already 10am… Daffy jie not yet wake up.”

Christopher rubbed his chin. “Let’s go check on her okay?”

Christopher walked up as he stood in front of Daphne’s room door. He slightly knocked. “Daphne?”

He received no reply. “I know you’re still angry with me but at least come down and have your breakfast.”

“Yeah… we made toast for you!” Taufik chirped.

“Daffy-jie, don’t be angry with us…” Sylvester whimpered.

Taufik eyed him weirdly. “Wey, why you cry?!”

Sylvester wailed. “Daffy-jie don’t want to open the door!”

Christopher knocked some more. “Daphne? Can you hear me? I’m going to bash down the door.”

Christopher held on the door knob. It wasn’t locked. He twisted it and peeked.

“DAPHNE!”
