Chapter 1

Because of A Pencil

I can feel the covers being removed from the top of my body. I shivered, hugging myself.

“Get up ______!! You’ll be late for your first day of being a junior!!” shouted my older brother Ryeowook.

“No! I don’t want to go to school!” I cried.

“Then I’ll just have to show everyone the pictures of you sleeping!” he threatened while shaking his camera in the air.

“Omo! Let me see!” I tried to snatch the camera from his hands but I had no such luck.

“Fine! I’ll get up, no thanks to you,” I murmured as I got up and brushed my teeth. I can hear Ryeowook laughing down the hallway. Since I was too tired to pick out something nice to wear, I just slid on a long T Shirt and leggings with heels.

I got dressed and ate breakfast quickly, I was already too late. I grabbed my bag and hurried over to the car. Ryeowook drove me to school everyday since with our mom dropping us off and saying ‘goodbye honey!’ it’s kind of embarrassing to us. We both go to SJ High with Ryeowook now being a senior and I’m going into 11th grade. We’re not too rich, just slightly wealthy. We’re not popular either, just middle class at school.

After Ryeowook parked the car, I got out and looked for Sooyoung. I took out my phone to see a text message.

Meet me at the big tree! ^^

-Sooyoung <3

I looked around campus to find Sooyoung eating a last minute breakfast snack under the big tree of the school.

“It’s amazing how you can eat so much and stay skinny,” I replied as I sat down next to her.

“It’s my nature, food loves me, and I love food,” she replied while biting another piece of her biscuit. We then started chatting about our summer and what we did until we were cut short by a sudden voice booming across campus.

“YAH! Move it will you?” Sooyoung and I looked up to find the Lee brothers picking on another student.

“Ugh, it’s those Lee jerks again,” she said as she glared at them.

“They really have nothing better to do than bully people,” I said as I watched the scene.

“YAH! I said move!” Eunhyuk said as he pushed the student out of his way.

“Just because they’re rich they’re the rulers of the school. Eunhyuk’s not even his real name! It’s Hyukjae!” Sooyoung exclaimed as she watched them strut.

“Moreover, all the girls go gaga over them. I seriously don’t know how,” I said as I ripped off a piece of Sooyoung’s biscuit.

RING!!!

“Time for class!” we said in excitement. The first day of school, the thrill that it brings; never gets old.

-----------------------------------------------------------

I took my seat next to Sooyoung as algebra class started. The teacher was about to begin when the door suddenly flew open.

“Donghae, you’re late,” the teacher strictly said. Sure, even the teachers knew who he was since he was the star of the soccer team. Instead of giving an answer or excuse to why he was late, he just tapped on the soccer ball he was holding and smiled. So that’s how he gets away with class?

“It seems as if all the seats have been assigned young man,” the teacher started. I looked over to my right. An empty seat! I knew what was going to happen next.

“Oh! There’s an empty seat next to the lady in gray! That will be your assigned seat,” she said enthusiastically.

“Ok,” Donghae said as he walked down the aisle and plopped into his seat next to me. He dropped his bag on the floor and winked over at a girl across the room. He then paid attention to the first lesson. We were basically just writing down the rules of the classroom and things. Donghae ruffled through his bag and his pockets. I suddenly felt a tap on my shoulder. I looked over to find a flustered Donghae.

“Do you have a pencil?” he asked me.

“Yes,” I said as I continued writing.

“Well?”

“What?!”

“Can I borrow the pencil?” I sighed and took out a pencil for him to use.

“Happy?” I asked him.

“No.” I looked over at him.

“This pencil has hearts on it!” he said as he threw the pencil on my desk. “Give me another one.”

“No! That was my only one left!” I replied as I put the pencil back in my bag.

“No it isn’t, I can see like 10 in your bag!”

“Ahem.” I looked up to find the teacher standing above us. “Is something wrong?” she asked us.

“She won’t give me a pencil to use!”

“I gave him one but he didn’t want it!”

“She had like 10 in her bag and won’t give one to me!”

“He should have his own supplies!”

“QUIET!!” she screamed. We shut our mouths. “I hate to do this on the first day but I’m going to have to give both of you detention for interrupting the class.”

“WHAT?!!” we both shrieked.

“I have soccer practice!”

“My parents will kill me!” but the teacher did not want to argue.

For the rest of the class, Donghae and I just silently glared at each other. I knew he was a jerk and the strange thing was that I’m in detention because of a pencil! I rubbed my temples and prayed for this class to be over.

-----------------------------------------------------------

As soon as algebra class ended, I walked off to my next class that is, until a hand caught my wrist. I turned around to see Donghae.

“What do you want?”

“Tell the teacher that the incident was none of my business.”

“Why?”

“Because I have soccer practice after school, I can’t afford to miss it.”

“Well, the reason why we’re in this mess is all because of you! Stupid, why won’t you just take the damn heart pencil,” I murmured.

“YAH! No one messes with Lee Donghae!”

“Well, I’m not lying to the teacher when it was obviously your fault moreover; I just messed with you Lee Jerk-hae.” I left, not giving a chance for Donghae to respond to my comeback. However, no one and I mean no one messes with the Lee brothers and I just did, right? Well, I don’t know what’s coming for me but I don’t want to know.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Lunch time came and I sat down next to Sooyoung and Taeyeon with my lunch. I pulled my cookie out from its bag and bit on it angrily.

“Saw what happened in algebra, wasn’t so good,” Sooyoung said as she ate.

“What happened?” asked Taeyeon.

“Donghae wanted to borrow a pencil and I gave him one with hearts and he didn’t like it and yeah, the argument started from there. We have detention after school today,” I explained.

“Wait, Donghae; from the Lee brothers?” Taeyeon questioned.

I nodded and continued. “And guess what? After class he asked me to tell the teacher that the incident wasn’t his fault when it obviously was. Plus, he gets to go to class late because of soccer practice.”

“That’s what money can do to you,” Taeyeon replied. “But you’ve got to admit, Donghae’s actually pretty good looking.”

“Good looking? You mean all time smexy,” Sooyoung added.

I sighed. I couldn’t care less about him. In my eyes, he was just an annoying jerk who likes to pick on people and gets what he wants.

Donghae’s POV:

I sat at my usual table with Eunhyuk and Sungmin. I intentionally glared at the pencil girl from across the cafeteria. Sure, I didn’t even know her name but that wasn’t going to stop me from calling her pencil girl since I didn’t know what else to call her.

“That big a*s girl; got me detention for the day,” I murmured.

“So you’re not going to soccer practice?” Eunhyuk asked.

“Guess not, since I have something else to do after school,” I answered.

“Calm down man, you’ve got detention before, right?” Sungmin asked me calmly.

“Well, that was when I either chewed gum in class, ran around school, no hall pass, or any of those small things. I never got detention from a pencil! Nonetheless, detention from a girl who doesn’t obey my every word; going to kill her later,” I exclaimed.

“Too harsh, too harsh, you’d better sleep with her soon so she can obey you quickly. Rather then punishing her by threatening, am I right?” I’ve got to admit, Sungmin’s comebacks are always good but I’m NEVER going to sleep with her!

“Plus, it’s the first of day of us being juniors, give her some slack,” Sungmin finished. I decided to shrug it off and finished my food.

After I finished half of my soda, I walked out to throw it away. Suddenly, I bumped into someone and the soda spilled all over the floor. I looked up to see pencil girl with her mouth open.

“You bi*ch look what you did!” I shouted in her face.

“Me? You’re the one who bumped into me first you a*shole!” she answered as loudly as me.

“Clean it up!”

“No, you do it Lee Jerk-hae!”

“YAH! Pencil girl!”

“My name is _____! FYI, get your facts straight Jerk-hae.” And with that, she walked away, leaving me with spilled soda.

“Donghae, clean that up,” said a lunch lady as she handed me a rag.

“But-what the-ugh-fine!” I said as my temper rose. I knelt down and quickly cleaned up the spilled soda. I scrunched up my face and mumbled, “Is this your idea of a trick? Sungmin, for once, I’m not going to listen to you. ______, I’ll definitely get back at you because no one messes with Lee Donghae.”

-----------------------------------------------------------

After school, I waited by the gates of the school for ______. When I spotted her, a few girls lured her to the inside of the gym. They locked her in with the lights off.

“______ are you regretting it now?” I asked through the intercom.

“Who are you? What are trying to say?” she asked as she looked around the gym.

“Kill the alarm!”

===========================================================

_______’s POV:

“Kill the alarm!”

I looked around and soon felt a wet drop on the tip of my nose. Suddenly, I heard the fire alarm ring and mountains of sprinkling water fell from the ceiling! The water didn’t seem to end, it kept sprinkling and by the time it stopped, there were puddles on the gym floor and I was soaking wet. I ran to doors of the gym but found it locked.

“What do you want?!” I screamed.

“Payback,” the voice boomed.

“Lee Donghae…” I whispered under my breathe.

“YAH! What do you think you’re doing Lee Jerk-hae?!” I yelled.

“Oh? So you do know who I am.” He paused. “Time for the tomatoes!”

“Tomatoes?” suddenly, I felt a splat on my face and I found it to be a ripe tomato. I quickly curled up into a ball and protected myself from the tomatoes that were flying towards me. I felt it splat on me, one by one, hurting and bruising my body. I felt cold already from the showers of water and now I feel bruised from the tomatoes. This was definitely the worst day of my life. When I felt like it was over, I stood up. The lights turned on and standing coolly in a corner was Donghae.

“Learned your lesson?” he asked me with an evil chuckle.

“No, I’m cold and bruised, no thanks to you!” I yelled in his face as I stormed out of the gym. To my surprise, it opened and I walked out of it. I went in the restroom only to find a distressed me.

“And I still have detention to go to,” I murmured to myself. My hair was already dry but I stunk more than a rotten tomato. I slid on a jacket from my backpack and walked to the algebra classroom.

“Hopefully, the teacher doesn’t complain about my wardrobe,” I said to myself. I opened the door to find Donghae already seated and the teacher at her desk.

“I’m here for detention,” I said wearily.

“Just sit somewhere in the room,” she commanded. I obeyed and took a seat in the far corner of the classroom. I laid my head down and sneezed. *cough* *cough* *sneeze*

‘Great, I’m getting a cold,’ I thought as I glared at Donghae. He just smiled and read his damn book.

I was mad, mad that I looked like a wreck and that Donghae had the upper hand over me. I don’t like to lose and plus, I still have to ask Ryeowook for a ride home after this! Who knows where he was. I closed my eyes and took a nap. Soon, I can lie down on my nice comfortable bed, and forget about all this nonsense.

-----------------------------------------------------------

______, _______, _____! I felt myself shake and I felt so cold. I opened my eyes to see Donghae.

“What do you want?” I said grumpily.

“Yah, detention’s over, it’s getting late you should go home,” he advised. I was too tired to argue so I just nodded and grabbed my things. I didn’t have the energy to walk home so I called Ryeowook to pick me up. Unfortunately, he was busy and I couldn’t get to him through phone.

“How will I get home?” I asked myself. To be honest, I’ve never taken a public bus because I’ve never needed to but now, I guess I do. I made my way to the bus stop when I felt a tug on my jacket hood.

“Do you want a ride home?” Donghae asked.

“No thanks, I think I can wait for the bus,” I answered him rudely. I really didn’t need anymore pranks from this guy.

As I was walking, I suddenly collapsed to the ground. I tried to pick myself up but I was too weak and it was so cold.

“Aish, you’re getting weak and it’s getting late, come on,” Donghae ushered me to his car and I obeyed. I was too tired to think. Throughout the whole car ride, all I could think about was getting into my bed and sleep, sleep like there’s no tomorrow. I felt as cold as ice, I couldn’t talk, I was too weak.

===========================================================

Donghae’s POV:

As I drove home, I looked over to see _____ snoozing away. I stopped by a curb and took a look in her bag. I pulled out her schedule to find her address neatly typed on the front line. As I continued driving, I couldn’t help but feel guilty. Maybe I should’ve listened to Sungmin and Eunhyuk after all. I stopped by her house and had no other choice but to carry her bridal style to the front porch. I set her down and woke her up.

“Get in your house, your parents will be worried,” I said to her. She nodded and stepped inside. I tiredly drove myself home but to open the door to find my parent’s happy faces….too happy faces.

“Um…what’s going on?”
