Stay, My Heroine.

Chapter 1

It was funny how fate worked its magic though. I was forced into meeting Jae Joong and now I’m forced to be away from him. I would not even be able to look into those brown eyes of his anymore. His brown eyes had repeatedly told me that he loved me even when I doubt that I loved myself. Inside them, I could see Jae Joong’s soul, intertwined with mine. It was when I looked into Jae’s eyes that I knew…I’m not in this alone anymore. I’m neither walking alone, nor fighting alone; I was not living alone. Why? It was because with every step, Jae Joong walked with me. With every battle, he fought with me. We have each other and we lived for each other, never daring to imagine what we would have became if had we not met each other. We were one and killing one of us was like killing both.

I could still remember the day when I first looked into Jae’s warm brown eyes. I could still commit to the memory when I first saw the sparkle in Jae’s eyes and as I gazed into them and saw all the possibilities in our there-after.

“I don’t want to go,” I stated simply as my brother, Chang Min pouted and tugged on the hem of my sweater. I continued flipping through the magazine as I ignored Chang Min’s vexatious pleas. To be honest, he was starting to get on my nerves.

“Come on! I have a date and I can’t accompany Jae Joong anywhere. It’s just ONE day. Please, sis? Do your big brother a favor? Besides, Jae is really hot.” Chang Min looked up at me with those big, soulful eyes, and I purposely allow my heart to frost over. No! I could not lose this round! I prayed to God that I would not succumb to Chang Min’s request. Somehow, in the past, I had always lost and I didn’t have a good feeling about this one.

I stopped flipping through my magazine and sighed. I turned to look at my brother dead straight in the eye—which turned out to be a big mistake. I was staring straight into his big, brown pleading puppy eyes. “I don’t care if he’s hot or not,” I said sincerely, “But you, of all people, should know that I hate crowded, touristy places. Besides, I’m going to get a haircut that day.”

“You could get a haircut any day!” Chang Min cried, “Look, I really want to go on this date!”

“Look, I really don’t want to accompany your friend!” I snapped back. “You know how hard it is to book my stylist, May, at Alfangi? She has a waiting list almost as long as the list of girls that rejected you. And you would know first-hand how long that is.”

“Shut up!” Chang Min whined and then he nudged me, asking, “Are you really going to deprive your brother of his future happiness? You just said so yourself—I have a long list of girls who rejected me. FINALLY, there’s one who’s willing to go out with me. Are you seriously going to do this to me?”

“Oh please, you don’t have any ‘future’ in store with the girl. I saw her picture; she looks like Honey Lee or some other past Miss. Korea. You have no chance in hell.” I said as I continued flipping through my magazine. It was true. His date was a hot piece—almost beauty pageant beautiful. I’m not sure if Chang Min could handle someone so high maintenance.

“SIS!” Chang Min cried and finally…the feet stomping came. It was not a surprise for me though. To be honest, I was waiting for that part. “IT’S NOT FAIR!! IT’S JUST ONE DAY!! WHY DON’T YOU EVER DO A FAVOR FOR ME?”

I stopped flicking through the magazine. “What do I get in return?” I eyed my brother, the mischievous one. Although he was older than me by approximately a year or two, I felt like I should’ve been the elder sibling. I was the responsible one; the accountable one! I would reasonably argue while Chang Min would whine and stomp his feet to get his way.

“You get to spend a day with a hottie and also receive gratitude from your dear brother!”

“A hundred bucks and it’s a deal.” I said bluntly and I held out my hands in front of Chang Min. He grilled me, giving me the evil eye, but eventually handed over a Benjamin as I squealed in delight. “Okay, you’ve got yourself a deal, Chang Min!”

“You.” He pointed a finger at me threateningly. “You better do a good job. And no sexual harassment!”

I scoffed and rolled my eyes. “Shouldn’t you be telling your friend that instead?”

“You, baby sister, have no chance in hell.” Chang Min teased as he walked out of the living room, sticking his tongue out. He left the room victorious…once again.

-----

Kim Jae Joong. I sat on a bench awaiting the guy with the name Kim Jae Joong. I looked at my poster. It was done pretty poorly. I was rushing out of the house when I grabbed a piece of cardboard and scribbled his name with a sharpie before I grabbed my keys. I thought I was running late, but then the flight was delayed, so I there I was, sitting in the waiting area with an hour to kill.

I watched people scurry around the airport. John F. Kennedy airport was a colossal airport with international flights coming and leaving every minute. It was crazy and hectic, especially inside the airport where people are running around trying to catch their flights and pick up their luggage. Although it was rather entertaining to watch people run around like headless chickens, I was still bored. I started chipping away at my peach colored nail polish when suddenly someone plopped into the seat next to me.

I tried hard to look away, but I was momentarily struck by his appealing feminine features. He looked at me, the ends of his mouth curling upwards to form a smile. “Hello.”

I blushed for his beauty was overwhelming. “H-hello…” I said, stuttering. No way. There’s no way that such a girly guy could make me stutter.

“Are you waiting for someone?” He asked, eyeing my home-made cardboard sign and I wished that I would’ve decorated it or something. It looked horrendous.

“Yes.” I said and I felt like such an idiot. The man was trying to make conversation and all I could do was award his hard work with one worded answers.

“Kim Jae Joong.” He said, reading my sign. He looked up at me, his brown eyes dancing. “Boyfriend?”

I shook my head. Hell no. “He’s my brother’s classmate. My brother has a date so he couldn’t make it.” ‘Congratulations,’ I thought to myself, ‘You’ve spoken more than three words!’

The stranger nodded understandingly. “My name is Micky Park Yoo Chun,” He said with a small smile, “but you can call me Yoo Chun.”

I nodded and I was about to tell him my name when a woman came up to us. She had short hair, cut to a small bob-like pixie cut with huge sunglasses on. Her small pink lips were pursed as she dragged her luggage towards us. To my surprise, she came up and started talking to me. “Hi. I’m terribly sorry that the flight was late.” She said panting. “I ran here…I thought you left.”

“Um, what?” I asked, visibly confused and Yoo Chun beside me chucked. Was this woman in her right mind? “I think you’ve got the wrong person. I don’t know you.”

The woman pointed to my sign. “Kim Jae Joong, right?” she said, “That’s me.”

“But you see, Jae Joong is a masculine name—”

“And you’re correct.” The woman said and took off her sunglasses and then I gasped. ‘She’ was not a she after all. Definitely not a she—but a he! He was the most gorgeous man I have ever seen and, I have to admit, he was even more beautiful than the stranger that sat next to me! He had beautiful brown eyes and a small, delicate nose. His thin, pursed lips were a tint of rosy pink. He did look like a girl, I had to admit, but he had a certain masculinity that I had missed when he first came up to me. His jaw line, for example, should’ve given it away. Then, there was his perfectly toned body that could easily be mistaken for a flat-chested girl, but if one looked closely, it was flawlessly molded and toned to perfection.

“Somehow, I didn’t believe Chang Min when he said his sister was ugly. I’m glad I didn’t listen to him. You’re far from the definition of ‘ugly.’” He smiled at me and I blushed. How the hell did he have that kind of effect on me? Chang Min had said that Jae Joong was a hottie, but I had underestimated Chang Min. Jae Joong was mesmerizing.

“Um, thanks…” I said, intimidated by his beauty. Then Jae Joong settled his gaze at Yoo Chun, who was beside me.

“Oh, let me introduce…this is Micky Park Yoo Chun and Yoo Chun, this is Kim Jae Joong.” I watched as the two attractive men shook hands.

Jae Joong asked how we met, using my name in his question and Yoo Chun answered, his gaze on me the whole time, “I met her just now. We were having a great conversation.” Maybe it was just me, but I felt like that sentence was incomplete. It was as if Yoo Chun wanted to add ‘before you came along,’ right after that statement.

“Okay, well, we should get going” Jae Joong said, grabbing his luggage, “Where is the car?”

“Oh, um, the parking lot,” I said as I stood up and helped Jae Joong with his luggage. As Jae Joong turn to leave the waiting area, I turned around and gave Micky a small smile. “It was nice meeting you, Yoo Chun.”

“It is nice meeting you too,” Yoo Chun said, then handed me a small card. “Here’s my business card. If you want to, call me. I’m a graphic designer, and I think I need more creative people on my team.” He eyed my poster and gave me a handsome smile as I blush. I knew he was teasing me about my ‘creativity.’

“Of course,” I said and bid farewell, then ran to catch up to Jae Joong whom I was quickly losing to the throng of people in the airport. I felt my cheeks heat up in embarrassment. ‘Way to really leave an impression,’ I scolded myself silently, ‘He must think you’re a fool.’

I heard Jae Joong call out my name. “Hurry up!” He said, waiting for me at the stoplight, a grin on his handsome, porcelain face and I shook away my embarrassment and walked a little bit faster to catch up with Jae. After all, a deal’s a deal right? I have pocketed the Benjamin; therefore, I must keep my part of deal. Besides, spending a day or two with Kim Jae Joong doesn’t seem THAT bad. I significantly remembered that I had not gone to Alfangi that day and I did not get my haircut until a few months later.
