Stay, My Heroine.

by SleepiiDreamer

Chapter 4

“Aw, come on,” Jae Joong whined as he trailed behind me on a path in Central Park, “I thought you looked rather cute in the other shirt. This one doesn’t suit you.”

I scoffed as I held on tighter to my bag, which held my other t-shirt. I had successfully located a stand and bought a t-shirt. Then, I went to change into it in a public bathroom. From the moment I’ve stepped out from the bathroom, Jae Joong had been whining and trying to convince me that the other shirt was better. To be honest, I liked my other shirt more too. I looked like a dorky tourist in a plain ‘I LOVE NY’ t-shirt. Shouldn’t it be vice versa? I was the tour guide here, yet I was the one sporting the ‘tourist’ clothing. What a shame.

“What are you talking about?” I quickened my pace and Jae Joong had to pick up his speed a little to catch up to me. “I like this shirt. I’ve always wanted an ‘I love NY’ t-shirt.” I lied.

“Hey, why are you running?” Jae Joong cried as he tried his best to match my pace. Realizing that I was practically running by now, I slowed down. My heart was drumming in my ears and my cheeks were flushed red; I could feel all the heat rushing up to my face. I turned to look at Jae Joong who was out of breath also. He panted and looked at me. “When had this become a race?” he asked.

“You’re so out of shape, Jae,” I teased, as he gasped, then stopped to rest; putting both of his hands on his knees and bending over to balance himself. “You can’t even run a few meters?”

“Hey! What are you talking about?! I have amazing upper body strength!” Jae Joong cried defensively, making his way towards me. He leaned in close to my face, as if challenging me. So close, as a matter of fact, that I could see the light brown specks in his eyes and count the number of beauty marks he had. “I could lift you up with one arm.”

I backed away from him a little and scoffed. “Right,” I said, walking away from me, waving my hands as if dismissing the issue. I was making my way down the path again when suddenly, in one swift movement; Jae Joong wrapped one arm around my waist and picked me up effortlessly.

I couldn’t help it. I was startled. I screamed. “WHAT THE HELL JAE JOONG!” I cried, “LET ME DOWN! LET ME DOWN!”

“You shouldn’t have doubted me. They don’t call me Youngwoong JaeJoong for nothing.” was all he said as he continued walking with me in his arms. I flailed my arms and thrashed around, trying my hardest to give him a hard time. At the same time, I continued screaming.

“What are you doing?! Let me down!” I cried, smacking him with no avail. His grip was still as tight as ever. “How ungentlemanly!”

“Quiet down before I throw you into the reservoir,” Jae Joong warned. I immediately shut up and quit thrashing around. In an instant, my feet touched the ground again and I let out a sigh of relief. My feet on the ground had never felt so good. I smoothed my shirt and patted my jeans. I looked at Jae Joong, narrowing my eyes. Then, letting out an ‘Hmph,’ I turned on my heels and continued down the never-ending path.

“Aw, come on,” Jae Joong said with a smile still playing on his lips, “You enjoyed it. Admit it.”

“Conceited jerk,” I said, “Not a hero at all.”

“You’re not a heroine either,” Jae Joong teased with a grin, and I wouldn’t disagree.

-----

After we finished strolling Central Park, I decided that I had to go to Soho to buy my friend, whose birthday was later on in the afternoon, a birthday present. So we hailed a taxi and in around twenty minutes, we were there.

“Jae Joong—think.” I demanded as we walked down the crowded streets, trying our best to dodge the tourists and the pedestrians. Nevertheless, I wasn’t able to dodge all the elbows and feet while Jae Joong was the one who effortlessly darted past all of that. I had to admit, he was rather gracious while I, on the other hand, was a total klutz. “What would a girl want for her nineteenth birthday?”

“Um,” he said softly, pondering. It was hard to hear from all the city sounds surrounding us. People were talking and laughing and cars were honking. New York City really had a lot going on. Miss a second or a beat, you miss out on a lot.

“Come on, be quick,” I demanded as I avoided yet another potential hazard. Well, everything’s a potential hazard for me to be quite honest. “I need to get her a present before six o clock this evening.”

Jae Joong grinned slyly and I just knew that a clever comment was going to come. And…I was not wrong. “Most girls your age would want me popping out of a giant cake.”

I stopped so abruptly that Jae Joong, who was behind me, almost collided into me. I turned around to face him, a bright smile on my face. “I’ll pay you to pop out of a cake naked!” I said enthusiastically. I was starting to grow attached to my idea. Not a bad idea at all—a male stripper!

“Are you telling me to sell myself?!” Jae Joong cried, appalled, with a mocked expression of shock on his face. “Half naked and you’ve got a deal!”

“Would you dress in drag?” Well, did it really matter? He already looked like a girl.

“NO!”

“Gosh, you ruin all the fun. Tsk, then you’re no good,” I said as I turned around and continued walking down the busy street. I looked up at the store I’ve stopped in front of. “You know what? I’ll go get her a Marc Jacobs bag and call it a day.”

“That sounds a lot more appealing to me,” Jae Joong said with a nod and then followed me into the designer store.

-----

“Happy birthday!” I cried as I shoved the neatly wrapped present (due to the work of the fabulous cashier at Marc Jacobs) into my friend, Rena’s awaiting arms. I kissed her lightly on the cheek.

“Thank you!” She said, her face flushed red from all the excitement. “I’m so glad you can make it! And of course, the present is a bonus. You really shouldn’t have.” She set my present on the table along with the numerous wrapped presents the others have given her.

“It’s nothing special,” I said, “I initially had a male stripper hired but he refused the offer once he realized that I wanted him to dress in drag.” I giggled when Jae Joong’s appalled expression came to mind. After touring Central Park and Soho, we returned home. I told him to entertain himself (or, option two, call Chang Min and hang out) as I attend the party. When I had left the house, I assumed he was taking a shower considering I didn’t see him. Or maybe it was because I was rushing out of the house due to the fact that I was late and I didn’t catch a glimpse of him.

“Aw, darn it,” she said jokingly, “I was really counting on you to get a stripper. That would’ve been the life of the party, for sure.”

“I’m not sure if your boyfriend would appreciate it,” I said as I saw Raymond making his way through the crowd towards us. His eyes lit up when he saw Rena and my heart flipped for her. How I envied Rena, who had someone who loved her so much. I wondered when I would have my own ‘Raymond,’ my own boyfriend—my own love. I wondered how it felt like to have someone adore you so much where just the sight of you could make their heart skip a beat and make their day.

“Hey darling,” he greeted her with a kiss and I looked on, slightly envious of their relationship. “How is it so far?”

“Boring,” she said, placing a hand on his chest and kissed him on the jaw, “Well, that’s until you showed up.”

I coughed. “I’m still here guys! Is it me or is it a bit cold in here?” I teased as the two of them turned red. “At least wait till I’m gone before you guys start getting all mushy.”

“I’m sorry,” Rena said, apologizing. Raymond nodded in unison, but they never let go of each others hands and the expression of adoration never left their eyes.

“Okay, enjoy yourselves,” I said as I slipped into the dense crowd, “I’m going to get some punch.” I slipped in between groups and people until I couldn’t see Rena and Raymond anymore. It was kind of lonely, being the single one. While everyone else was so consumed in their boyfriend and love lives, I was left feeling happy for them. But at the same time, I was also envious. There were not as much ‘girl’s night out’ anymore and there were less phone calls. They were too preoccupied with love and I couldn’t blame them. They deserved the happiness they have earned. I guess I just haven’t earned it yet.

The louder the music blasted, the heavier the crowd became. Sighing, I poured a drink for myself. Why had I decided to come? It wasn’t even like I enjoyed going to clubs. It was the same old clichés in these kinds of places. A desperate guy would make a move and offer to buy a drink for you. By the end of the night, he couldn’t even say the words, “Let’s go to my apartment,” before retching and throwing his guts up.

“Hello,” said a voice and I turned around to see a guy saunter up to me, as if on cue. “My name is—”

Before he could finish his sentence, however, my phone vibrated and rang. I was never so grateful for a phone call in my life. “Excuse me,” I said with a broad smile on my face as I grabbed my phone from out of my Coach bag, “I have to take a call.”

I walked away from Desperate Guy #1 and made my way outside to the garden, somewhere quiet, to take my phone call. When I looked at the screen, I was surprised to see that it was a new number, yet the numbers were vaguely familiar to me. I frowned as I racked my brain for answers. (917) 934-06—wait. What? That made no sense. That was my number! I hit the “Accept” button and put my ear to the phone. “Hello?”

A husky, yet very alluring voice breathed my name on the other line. It sent chills down my spine. “Yoo Chun?” I asked. I was sure I sounded very confused.

Yoo Chun, I’m positively sure that it’s Yoo Chun, chuckled. “Yes,” he said, “It’s Yoo Chun. I’m afraid that we have managed to switch phones during our brief encounter this afternoon.”

I was speechless. How the hell did this happen? And then I remembered. The bus driver braked. The bus halted to an abrupt stop. Jae Joong yanking my arm to prevent me from falling. My phone falling onto the floor…alongside Yoo Chun’s. Augh. “Oh gosh,” I said, smacking my head with the palm of my hand. “The bus…”

“So… when can I see you again?”
