Chapter 49

Poor Little Monster

“Ms. Lee, I am sorry to tell you that your son has contracted leukemia?” Dr. Wu announced sadly.

I froze when I heard the word ‘leukemia.’ “Dr. Wu, are you serious? Jaejae is only 4 years old. How could it be possible for him to contract this disease at such a young age?” I held tightly onto the sleeve of the doctor.

“From his DNA, we found out that he inherited the leukemia genes and that’s nothing we can do about it. The only thing that we can do is to find a donor for him as soon as possible.” Every word sounds so piercing till I could feel blood lingered down my ears. I could feel my heart shattering in my fragile body. I walked to the hospital garden for a night walk.

“Ms. Lee, Ms. Lee, Ms. Lee.” Dr. Wu kept calling Snowflake but she was so sad to the point whereby no words can enter her ears. Dr. Wu shook his head and gave Snowflake some space to think and walked into other wards.

I walked along the dark path around the lake and I shivered in the cold of the night. My soul cried out in devastation. After my grandfather passed away two years ago, I pinned all my hopes on my sweet little monster and now they are all gone. Why is God so cruel to me?

I looked up to the beautiful sky filled with stars. “Are you telling me to have new hopes even if all my hopes are dashed?” I spoke to my maker in silent prayer. My frail body and heart are tired and entirely crushed.

These wonderful four years that I spent with little monster were splendid and fantastic. He is so cute, bright and understanding but a little silly at certain point of time. He does not only look like Jaejoong, some of his actions are totally the same as him too. Sometimes I wonder whether they met before. How could a child learn from his father without meeting him?

The phone in my pocket vibrated. I took it from my pocket and accepted the call. “Mimi… Mimi…” A soft childish cry floated into my ears. “Jaejae… Is that you?”
I asked him tenderly.

“Mimi… Jaejae is scared. Jaejae wants Mimi…” My heart twitched at his frail wretched voice.

“Mimi is coming… Wait for Mimi… Ok?” I quickened my pace towards his ward. Within 2 minutes, I dashed towards his side.

“My sweetie pie, don’t cry. Mimi is here.” I pulled him into my arms and wiped his tears.

“Mimi… Jaejae had a dream just now. I saw my favourite singer Jaejoong carrying and playing with me. Mimi… isn’t Jaejae lucky?” His dull tearful eyes sparkled like diamonds when he mentioned Jaejoong’s name.

My heart pounded wildly at Jaejoong’s name. After so many years, just a mere mention of his name still has effects upon me. “I never told him who his father was but never expected him to be such a faithful fan of his father.” I stroked him lightly.

“Really… That’s awesome… Do you want to see him?” I patted him lightly on his butt as I patted him to sleep.

He quickly pulled away from me. “Really…. Mimi is going to bring Jaejae to see Jaejoong Hyung?” He looks brightly into my eyes.

I wanted to laugh when he said ‘Jaejoong Hyung’, I wonder what he will react if he knows that Jaejoong is his father. I restrained myself from laughing and calmed down the excitement that is going explode.

“Yes… Yes… He is ajusshi and not hyung… He is old enough to be your father.” I sniggered at my little monster. “No… No… He is my Hyung.” Jaejae started to sing ‘Hug’ and started jumping on my lap.

Suddenly, someone knocked at the door. “I’m Dr. Wu, can I come in?” I invited Dr. Wu in and Jaejae jumped into his embrace.

“Dr. Wu, when are you going to ask Jaejae’s Mimi out?” Jaejae asked playfully and played with Dr. Wu’s tie. My cheeks were burning red as I was so embarrassed at Jaejae’s question.

Dr. Wu is a great catch but there still someone whom I can never forget and move on. “Stop being naughty, come to Mimi.” I quickly retrieved Jaejae from Dr. Wu without eye contact. I didn’t know how to face him because I know that he has been taking care of me since I gave birth to Jaejae.

“It’s alright. I will be bringing you and your Mimi to South Korea tomorrow.” I froze at Dr. Wu’s words and I turned to him blankly.

“I found a donor that miraculously matches Jaejae. I was told that I need to contact the person personally in order to see if he is willing to help us. I am sure Jaejae will be fine, don’t worry too much.” Dr. Wu patted lightly on my shoulder and took Jaejae from me.

“You need some rest and pack your luggage. Leave Jaejae to me. I pick you up outside your house tomorrow. I will bring Jaejae with me too.” He smiled to me with assurance.

“Thank you so much for your help. I don’t know how I should repay you. You have been helping us so much.” I smiled as I packed Jaejae’s stuff.

“Just go out with me.” He chuckled. I was totally shocked at his question as he never touched upon such a sensitive topic before.

I saw a hint of sorrow in his eyes when I couldn’t reply him. “I was just kidding with you. Don’t take it seriously.” He smiled back at me lightly.

“Don’t worry about it.” He patted lightly on my head and walked out of the ward.

“May I speak to Kim Jaejoong?” Dr. Wu asked.

“I’m Jaejoong here. Who are you?” Jaejoong asked rudely.

“I’m Dr. Wu here calling from Severance Hospital.” Dr. Wu replied.

“Oh I see. What can I help you?” Jaejoong retorted boorishly.

“I have a 4 years-old patient who is suffering from leukemia. He needs your blood urgently, can you please help him?” Dr. Wu asked hopefully.

“Are you crazy? Why should I help him? I am not God!!! I couldn’t even save myself why are you asking for my help? I am a very busy person, please stop calling me.” Jaejoong threw his phone across the room angrily and went into his room.

“Mr. Kim, Mr. Kim, Mr. Kim!!! Are you there?” The line went dead.

“May I speak to Kim Heechul?” Dr. Wu asked.

“This is he. May I help you?” Heechul asked.

“Oh I see. I’m Dr. Wu calling from Severance Hospital. Currently, I have a 4 years-old patient who is waiting for bone marrow transplant. I called your brother but he refused. I found out that he donated his bone marrow to you so I thought of asking your help to persuade him to donate his bone marrow. We came to Korea after we got to know that there’s a donor here. Since he donated before, we thought he will be willing to donate again but we got rejected. The little boy is smart and adorable. I really hope that you can bring him to the hospital to see the boy. I am sure he will be willing to help after meeting the boy.” Dr. Wu tried to persuade Heechul.

“Oh I see. If he is unwilling, can I help?” Heechul asked hopefully.

“I read your file before and found out that you have low blood pressure. I don’t think you are a suitable candidate. You are still recovering period and it is not advisable for you to donate your bone marrow. Your brother is healthier than you so it is much more suitable for him to donate. I am thankful for your suggestion but I can’t risk your life in exchange for that boy.” Dr. Wu explained in details as he hopes that Heechul will understand. Even if he was grateful for Heechul’s suggestion but it is his duty to safe lives and not harm them. He loves Jaejae dearly but he couldn’t risk another person’s life just to save someone he loves. He can’t be selfish but impartial.

“Oh I see. I understand what you mean. I will try my best but I can’t guarantee that he will agree. I hope I will be able to help the boy. Can I have your number so that I can call you back later?” Heechul tried not to give Dr. Wu any false hope.

“Sure. I understand. Thank you so much for your help. My number is 010-3277-8052. You can just send me a message if you can’t reach me. I will get back to you as soon as possible.

“That’s alright. Thank you. I hope that I will be able to bring you good news.” Heechul said hopefully.

“Me too. Thank you. I hope to hear from you soon. Goodbye.” Dr. Wu replied happily.

“You’re welcome. Goodbye.” Heechul ended the call and walked into Sunhye’s room.

“I need your help. There is a 4 years-old kid who needs Jaejoong’s bone marrow and the doctor hoped that we can help him. Let’s persuade Jaejoong to donate or the child is going to die.” Heechul said sadly.

“That Jaejoong… I FEEL LIKE SLAPPING HIM… He is such a JERK?” Sunhye stormed out of her room and entered Jaejoong’s room.

Jaejoong was lying on his bed and Sunhye tried to kick him awake. “Oppa… Oppa… Wake up… Can you get a life?” Sunhye yelled at him angrily.

“Go away!!! Get out of my room!!! I am tired and drunk. I don’t want to talk to you now.” Jaejoong yelled at his nosey sister and threw his pillow at her.

“You better stop your nonsense or I swear that you are going to be sorry.” Sunhye warned angrily as anger started building within her.

“I SAID GET OUT OF MY ROOM.” Jaejoong yelled in frustration and threw another pillow at his super annoying sister.

“You are going to regret soon! Heechul, come and help me.” Sunhye yelled for her second elder brother.

Heechul ran into the room and helped Sunhye to drag Jaejoong into the shower room. Sunhye turned on the shower and sprayed at Jaejoong. “Can you get a life? Snowflake is not going to come back.” Sunhye got so angry with Jaejoong because she knew the truth but she couldn’t bring herself to tell Jaejoong the harsh truth, and she also promised Snowflake that she will never tell Jaejoong the truth as Snowflake threatened her with her life.

“It’s none of your business. Stay out of my life.” Jaejoong tried to stand up but kept falling because the floor was too slippery.

“Your business is mine. I am going to butt into your life as long as you are my brother.” Sunhye yelled at her brother angrily. She understands his pains because she knows that if she and Junsu in their plight, she would prefer death. Even though she felt this way; she couldn’t give up on her brother. This brother of hers had suffered so much but never got anything rewarding in return.

She looked at her brother sadly and held his hands. “I understand it is hard for you. After 5 long years, you got to forget about her and start a new life. You can’t live your entire life this way.” She stroked his hands lightly.

Tears uncontrollably rolled down his eyes, he never cried a single tear after a year of fruitless search for his beloved. He was touched by his sister’s love and he decided to change his life for his family.

Sunhye embraced her frail miserable brother. “I believe God has a plan for you. Just be patient and wait. Maybe God has a better plan for both of you.” Sunhye stroked her brother’s hair lightly.

Jaejoong nodded and embraced his sister. “Thanks, Sunny!” He thanked his sister for her unconditional love.

Sunhye pulled them apart. “Can you go with me to the hospital tomorrow? I need you to meet someone.” She asked and hoped that he will agree.

“Sure.” Jaejoong agreed. “That’s great. You better take a shower and get some sleep. I will see you tomorrow at 10 am.” Sunhye got out of Jaejoong’s bathroom.

“Just wake me up tomorrow.” Jaejoong closed his bathroom door and took off his clothes.

Sunhye walked out of Jaejoong’s room and closed his door. She went back into her room as she pondered how Snowflake is doing now. She lost contact with Snowflake after Snowflake sent her first and last email. She reopened the email that Snowflake sent.

Dear Sunhye,

Thank you for sending me news about Jaejoong. I am really grateful because I was really worried about him. You must be very mad at me for forsaking Jaejoong or even hate me. I am very sorry to leave him, I swear from the bottom of my heart that I didn’t want to leave him but I couldn’t.

You are right about the pictures; they are just some pictures which I took with a friend here. I just want Jaejoong to forget about me and move on. I beg you please don’t tell him about this. If you tell him about this and he found me, you will never see me again.

I hid a grave secret from him and I decided never to let him know. I don’t want to put this burden on him because I want him to leave a carefree life. I hope that he will forget the past and move on.

I want you to know that I couldn’t betray my parents; I couldn’t help myself from hating your grandfather and mine. They put me into such a plight whereby I couldn’t continue to ignore and continue to be with Jaejoong. I can’t tell you the secret but this is what I can tell you. I will love your brother forever even if he might find someone better than me, I will be happy for him. Please don’t tell him this, just tell him to forget about me.

I am not angry with you for blaming me betraying your brother. I wanted to kill myself too but I couldn’t. I need to stay live for those who are alive because of me. This is my first and last email to you. I will cancel this account after I sent this email and I am going to leave New York tonight. I don’t think we will meet again. Take care and I want to thank you for your concern. All the best to you and Junsu… I know you had a crush on him for a long time… Continue to hold on him and I hope you will never end up like Jaejoong and I.

Warmest regards,
Snowflake
