Chapter 1

Entry 1: Night Shadows

It was a cold January night. People, garbed in fancy cocktail dresses and expensive suits flock up the lavish mansion. It was not strange though, to see men and women from the upper bracket of society intermingle tonight. It was after all Kim Jaejoong’s 24th birthday celebration; and only the best were invited.

Bomi’s pov

I could see him sipping champagne from his tall glass. His seductive eyes sparkled with gaiety. It was obvious that he was enjoying the company of the men he was having conversations with. I recognized them from Jaejoong’s elite golf club association. I could hear his laughter echo from where I was standing, which was the farthest, opposite corner of the grand ballroom.

If only he would look at me in the same way.

If only he would look at me as if I too was someone important. Someone valuable.

I heaved a deep sigh, feeling another wave of emptiness inside my heart. Like the glittering diamonds on my wedding band, our marriage appears beautiful and perfect on the outside, but cold and jaded on the inside.

Out of nowhere, I heard my name being called. I raised my head and instantly put up a fake front. I smiled as if I was having a great time. I smiled as if I was happy being Mrs. Jaejoong Kim.

I saw one of the special guests come my way. The ever-so-charming, Park Yoochun, Jaejoong’s childhood pal and college roommate. He also happens to be my older brother.

“Oppa, do you need anything?” I walked towards him.

He and I grew up close, but ever since the wedding took place I started to put a distance between us. I knew that he would be able to sense if I was having any problems. I don’t want to jeopardize his relationship with Jaejoong. I have committed enough “crimes” as it is to last me a lifetime, and I wouldn’t want to add breaking up a solid friendship on my list.

“Am I not allowed to approach my baby sister for a small chit-chat?” Yoochun smiled. “I just want to tell you that I’m leaving for Japan tomorrow morning. I may be gone for months. Dad wants me to deal with the visiting land developers.”

“Really?” I bit my lip, feeling slightly worried. “Then I guess, you won’t be able to stay for the birthday toast.” I felt sad. I don’t want my brother gone for long.

The thought of him just within reach gives me a deep sense of security. As long as he’s around Jaejoong would control his temper; meaning less beating, less bruises.

“Oppa, can’t you just ask someone from your department to handle it for you?”

“I’m sorry, pet, it’s dad’s orders.” He hugged and patted me on the back.

“Ouch!” I softly cried out.

Yoochun held me away from him, giving me a concerned look. “Why did you yelp? Are you hurt or something?” I remained silent. He quickly turned me around, making me face the wall, and pushed the neckline of my emerald conservative gown down.

He gasped, “What happened to you? How did you get this?” He traced the big, dark purple bruise under my shoulder blades.

I winced.

“Is something the matter, Yoochun?” A cold, velvety voice suddenly whispered. Some of the guests nearby were starting to look at our direction. I automatically stiffened and broke free from my brother’s gentle grasp. I turned and met my husband’s subtle but threatening gaze.

I gulped.
