Chapter 19

Wilson read the reports scattered on his desk while listening to the new business plans from his assistants.

“The real estate development market in Hong Kong is nearly saturated. Right now everyone is looking towards the market in China. Recently we’ve done some research and contacted some potential investors. They’re interested in developing a new industrial area in Guangdong Province and are looking for partners. We know their targets are development companies from Hong Kong because they believe more in our professionalism, good quality and experience.” His assistant handed a report to Wilson.

Wilson was very interested. It seemed to be a very attractive business.

His assistant continued, “If we can cooperate with them, we will for sure make big money out of it. We don’t need to wait and beg for contracts from those big developers this time. The Chinese businessmen give money, and we do our work from the beginning to the end. Then the big profits go into our pocket. Another good thing is because the industrial area is not far from Hong Kong. With the convenient transportation now we can easily go there in a few hours. This way we can for sure monitor the work really well. We hardly have to stay overnight and so our operations in Hong Kong are not affected by a lot.”

“Arrange a meeting time. I want to have a chat with them.” Wilson smiled.

Ka Ying opened the door and walked into the house. Wilson sat on the sofa with a TV remote in his hand. He was flipping channels impatiently.

“Where have you been? It’s almost 10pm! I called you many times but you didn’t answer the phone.” Wilson complained as soon as he saw Ka Ying.

“Sorry I had to work overtime,” Ka Ying sat on the sofa. She was very tired, “I was in the warehouse all day and I left my phone at my desk in the office. I was so busy and forgot to give you a call that I’ll be home late tonight.”

“I don’t understand why you’re staying in that company. That job is long hours and stressful but you aren’t making a lot from it.” Wilson said.

“It’s not easy to find another job. It’s going to be as stressful and long hours anyway.” Ka Ying leaned on the sofa.

Wilson said coldly, “Just quit that job. I want to see you in the house when I come home everyday after work.”

Ka Ying looked at him, not totally understood if that was a loving request or a complaint, “I need to work because I still need to support my family and pay for my brother’s tuitions. Ka Fai still has two more years of university to finish.”

“It’s not that much money, is it? I will give you allowance every month and you can do whatever you want with that money. Go ahead and give your mom or your brother. I don’t care.” Wilson sounded uncaring.

“Wilson I’m not using your money.” Although they were living together, Ka Ying still wanted to leave some independency especially when it involved her beloved family.

“You are afraid of rumours? Who dares to say anything? It’s just between you and me and it’s none of other people’s business.” What he said was true.

Ka Ying thought for a moment. She hated her current job anyway. Maybe she would quit the job and rested some time first. She can deal with the money issue with Wilson later.

“Ok, it’s confirmed! You go and resign tomorrow.” Wilson stood up, “I haven’t had dinner yet and I’m starving. You must be hungry too! Let’s go out and eat.”

Ka Ying did not want to move. She was very tired, “Wilson I’m very tired and I just want to take a shower and go to bed now. Sorry but can you either stay home and make some noodles or go out and eat by yourself?”

Wilson did not respond. He opened the door and stood there still, starring at Ka Ying.

Ka Ying understood what that meant. She sighed and reluctantly got up and went out with him.

*************************
This day, Ka Ying went back home to visit her mother and brother. She gave some allowance to her brother Ka Fai.

“Wow, sister! Why is it so much this month?! Thanks a lot!” Ka Fai went back to his room happily.

Ka Ying gave another stack of bills to her mother, “Mom, this is for you.”

Mrs. Wong slightly counted the bills, “I called your office a few days ago and realized that you’ve quitted. Where does this money come from? I’m fine and don’t use up your savings.”

“No, I didn’t use my savings…” Ka Ying hesitated.

“This is Wilson’s money?” Mrs. Wong raised her voice, “I’m not using it. You give it back to him!”

Ka Ying did not know what to do.

“What does that mean? You aren’t working and he’s supporting us all? If he’s your husband and I would feel happy about it. But not in this case.” Mrs. Wong did not like Wilson at all.

“Mom…I’m only taking a break now. I’ll look for another job later and I’m only ‘borrowing’ his money for now. Besides, he wanted me to quit the job because he’s concerned that I’m too tired and stressful.” She tried to convince her mother to accept the money, and Wilson.

“Ok, I guess I have no choice but to believe what you say.” Mrs. Wong was still not happy. “Here are your letters.” She lost her temper and walked away.

Ka Ying opened her letters; they were all credit card statements etc. She was planning to update the address soon. Suddenly, she saw a letter from an orphanage charity fund:

“Dear Miss Wong: We thank you for your generous donation of $50,000 to our orphanage. And on behalf of our children, we want to express our sincere appreciation…”

She was confused: when did she make such a donation?
