“Ka Fai is studying at the library and tonight’s dinner will just be you and I.” Mrs. Wong brought out a few dishes of food and sat down.
“His A-Level exams are coming up and hopefully he’ll do well.” Ka Ying was very caring of her younger brother. He was always serious about his study, wishing to enter university after finishing secondary school this year.
“Of course I always hope that he can enter university. But if he can’t get grants or scholarships, your load will be even heavier than now.” Mrs. Wong was concerning about her daughter having to support the family.
Ka Ying did not think it was an issue, “If he likes it and is able to get more education, no matter how expensive it is, I’ll still support him. I only finished secondary school but I hope to see Ka Fai getting his degree one day.”
“But you also have to start thinking more about yourself. You’ve done too much for the family already. Ka Ying, it’s time for you to look for a boyfriend. I am really looking forward for someone who can take a good care of you.”
“Mom, I haven’t thought about those things…”Ka Ying dropped her head and gobbled down her rice.
After dinner, Ka Ying went back to her room and started searching through her closet. She had never been to a clubhouse before, and was not sure what to wear as considered proper. Most importantly, she was expecting to see Wilson again tomorrow. This was what really strangling her nerves. She wanted to choose her best outfit which would, at least, catch a bit of his attention on her. Thinking about this, she cannot stop herself from putting up a sweet smile. But at the same time she was afraid that if he ignored her, she will be very disappointed. Ka Ying did not know how to handle this dangling feeling in her heart. “Help!” She jumped into her bed and covered her head with the blanket.

It was the first time that Ka Ying ever went to such a high-class clubhouse. From yesterday’s self-introduction, she already found out that Alex came from a wealthy family. Even the car that Alex drove today to pick up Ka Ying was probably worth the same as her old apartment. Her family was certainly not what you called poverty. Besides, Ka Ying was always a simple pleasant girl who, was certainly keen on making a living, but was never being materialistic. But right now, situating in this environment with a rich-and-handsome young man accompanying on the side, Ka Ying did feel like Cinderella. It was like to dream to her. More of a dream to her was that when she and Alex entered the restaurant, Wilson was already waiting at the table. Ka Ying felt her steps becoming lighter and lighter as they approached the table and sat across from Wilson.
“Good job Alex! With such small chance, you can actually meet again and get to know her!” Wilson stretched his right hand over the table, “Wilson Fong.”
“Wong Ka Ying.” Ka Ying shook hand with him. His hand was big and warm, she thought.
Wilson and Alex began to talk about some work matters. Ka Ying tried to avoid direct eye contact with Wilson. She raised up the menu and pretended reading it. After a while, she stole a look at Wilson. Coincidentally he was moving his head and found Ka Ying looking at him. He gave her a charming smile. It was killing.
“Ka Ying,” Alex gently asked, “The air-conditioning here is quite strong. If you’re cold you can put on my jacket.”
“I…” before Ka Ying finished her line a female voice interrupted, “Sorry for being late. My client was keeping us at the meeting!” Ka Ying turned around and saw a tall, young woman. Her formal but trendy business attire revealed that she must be a thriving career woman. She sat down at the empty seat beside Wilson and an alarm seemed to have rung inside Ka Ying.
“This is Wong Ka Ying, Alex’s new friend,” Wilson introduced, “This is Ching Siu Wai, my fiancee.”
"Wilson and Siu Wai are getting married in half a year." Alex added.
It was a harsh hit on Ka Ying’s heart. She had been thinking numerous times that an outstanding young man as Wilson will have many girlfriends. If he was a playboy, then at least Ka Ying could stay on his beside, hoping that one day he would be aware of her. Now that he actually had a stable relationship up to the point of marriage, the bubble dream of Ka Ying popped. She was a very traditional girl and she felt guilty to have such fascination on an about-to-married man. Her sensation and self-consciousness were definitely fighting against each other.
Throughout the dinner, Wilson, Siu Wai, and Alex enjoyed a very good time while Ka Ying did not have much appetite. Alex noticed that and so every fifteen minutes he asked if she was alright, and tried to do this and get that for her. Wilson and Siu Wai teased at Alex for being so caring which made Ka Ying even more uneasy. She apologized and went to the washroom. She did not want to face Wilson nor Alex. She starred at the mirror with her head totally blanked out.
“Ka Ying, are you ok? You’ve been here for a long time.” Siu Wai went into the washroom and checked on her. “You look a bit pale…and your hands are cold. Are you sick?”
“No I am fine. Thank you.” Ka Ying tried to avoid eye contact with Siu Wai. She did not want her eyes to reveal to Siu Wai the truth that “I am not feeling well because I like your fiance and I'm jealous.”
Siu Wai thought she knew why Ka Ying was hiding from them. “Sorry we should not be teasing at you and Alex. You must feel uncomfortable with that. Um…this must be your first time dating, right?” Siu Wai gave her a warm smile and slightly tapped her hand, “Don’t worry. Alex is childish and sometimes quite annoying, but he is definitely a good guy. I’m sure you two can get along and he’ll treat you very well.”
“Thanks for that. I am alright.” Ka Ying pretended that Siu Wai’s assumption was correct and that she had effectively comfort her. “Let’s go back out. Here’s definitely not a pleasant place to stay at! Alex and I have to rush for the movie.”

When Alex and Ka Ying stepped out from the theatre, he suggested to go to the harbour walk and Ka Ying had no comment. Alex noticed that Ka Ying had been extremely quite tonight. His rich experience with girls told him that Ka Ying must have something struck in her mind. He stood by her side, hoping to be able to catch a clue from her face. “Ka Ying, what do you think about that movie? The girl finally lost the guy and he ended up marrying another woman…” A soar feeling instantly rose up Ka Ying’s nose. Tears started falling down her big beautiful eyes.
“Ka Ying…what happened? That movie wasn’t that emotional. Why are you crying? I apologize if I said something wrong and it hurt you.…” Alex panicked.
Ka Ying cannot control herself and her emotion finally collapsed. Alex held her and she cried vigorously on his shoulder. Alex seemed to understand vaguely who was happening.
