LONDON
The cold temperature and foggy weather was irritating. Ka Ying put down her apron and said good-bye to her boss and other coworkers at the restaurant.
“Ying, so today is your last day working here.” Her coworker asked.
“Yes. I’m going to miss you all! It’s been a pleasure working here.” Ka Ying smiled.
“Good luck on your final exams! Come back and I’ll treat you with our fish and chips!” Her boss called.
“Thank you Mr. Smith! I certainly will!” Ka Ying waved at them and stepped out the door. She had been with this part-time job for the past two years. Her boss and coworkers were nice and kind. She would definitely miss them.
Ka Ying walked pacely to the bus stop to catch the bus back to her apartment. Her final exams were coming up and she had to concentrate on her ultimate studying. After passing them successfully, she would be graduating from her college.
The bus had not arrived. Ka Ying took out her notes from her bag and started reading. She had to make good use of her time. Suddenly, a car passed by and stopped in front of her.
The guy in the car whistled to her, “Beautiful lady! Do you want to catch a ride from me?”
Ka Ying looked up and was horrified. She tucked her book into her bag and quickly walked away.
“Hey…don’t go away…” He hopped out of the car and tried to catch her arm.
“Stop it, Alex.” She stayed away from him, “Why are you in London? I told you I’m having my final exams and you don’t come and bother me! I really need to study.”
“I am on my way to Switzerland and I decided to pass by London and just stay here for a couple days to see you!” Alex smiled sweetly.
“You…” Ka Ying was annoyed, “Sorry but I won’t have time to play around with you now.”
“Sweet heart,” He begged, “You can study later. You can spend some time with me, can’t you?”
“No!” Ka Ying stated firmly, “You say the same thing every time! One time you were here, you made me go to Italy with you and I had to skip one whole week of class! Last time, you passed by London and stayed for only two days. I said I had a big test the next day and didn’t really study yet. You bugged me to have dinner with you and promised to let me go afterwards. But that night we ended up…” She bit her lips, “I didn’t study and did so bad on the test! I only got 61% and barely passed!”
“Come on, 61 is good enough…”Alex comforted her.
“It was all your faults!” She hit him.
“Alright, alright, it was all my faults.” Alex agitated her, “Just spend a little time with me this time, ok?”
Ka Ying’s heart softened; she was actually happy to see him, “Now what do you want?”
“Just have dinner with me tonight, and I promise I’ll let you go afterwards…” He used the same excuse again.
Ka Ying was scared, “No I won’t fall into your trap again this time!”
“Ka Ying…” Alex would not give up.
“And by the way,” Ka Ying warned him, “If I don’t pass the exams and can’t graduate, that means I will have to stay in London for longer and won’t go back to Hong Kong.”
Alex freaked out, “But remember our Valentine’s Day…”
Ka Ying tucked out her tongue and made a funny face at him; she learnt this from Alex, “You are right! Two months later, on February 14th, you can still go to the church by yourself with the minister, the guests, the flowers…everything!” She ran away, “But there will be no bride!”
“Please don’t do that to me, Mrs. Yiu to-be…” Alex pleaded as he chased after her.

SYDNEY
While it was the cold and wet winter in London, Sydney was enjoying a hot and sunny summer.
Siu Wai sat in front of the cashier counter, preparing an order list to be faxed over to the coffee bean wholesaler later. A few teenagers in casual wear and back-packs had finished their iced coffees and walked up to the cashier to pay their bills. They asked Siu Wai politely, “We are tourists and we want to know how to get to this place.” They showed her a tourist guide book and pointed at a picture.
“Oh! You three want to go wind-surfing?” Siu Wai gave them clear direction, “This is an excellent place! I haven’t been there for a very long time, but I believe it’s still one of the best places for water sports. You can go there by bus…”
“Wow, you know that place so well! You must love wind-surfing! What other good and fun activities can we have around this area?” The teenagers were excited.
“There are lots of thrilling activities you can do here!” Siu Wai flipped through their tourist guide book and gave a lot of good suggestions.
The teenagers were amazed by Siu Wai’s expertise in these sports, “You must love these sports, don’t you? Do you go often?”
Siu Wai calmly shook her head, “No, I can’t play those things now.”
“Why?” The teenagers asked with curiosity.
Siu Wai slowly stood up. She smiled and pointed at her big belly.
The teenagers understood and laughed. They thanked and wished her good luck as they walked out of the café.
“Excuse me!” A customer called from a table. The business was busy today and the small place was packed with customers.
“Yes!” Siu Wai answered from the cashier counter.
The customer said, “I’ve spilled some coffee on the table. Could you please clean this up?”
“Sure. I’m coming.” Siu Wai took a cloth and was about to walk out to the table.
“Wait! I’ll clean that up!” Wilson called as he ran out from the kitchen. He patted Siu Wai and said nervously, “You stay comfortably at the cashier counter and let me do all the work, ok?”
“Come on, you don’t have to be as nervous as this!” She smiled sweetly, “It’s only 6 months and I’m doing fine! I’m bored staying there the whole day!”
“If you’re bored, grab yourself another slice of cake.” Wilson wiped the table for the customer while talking to Siu Wai.
“Every time I say bored, you’ll feed me with cakes.” She curled her lips, “If I continue to eat like this, I can never go wind-surfing or sky-diving again…” She suddenly paused and uttered, “Ouch.”
“What happened?” Wilson panicked and approached her.
Siu Wai smiled sweetly and put her hand on her belly, “She just kicked me.”
“You must be too happy to hear mommy talking about wind-surfing and sky-diving!” Wilson gestured her belly and talked softly to their unborn daughter, “You are as naughty as mommy!”
“Oh you don’t say that to her!” Siu Wai complained.
“Oops.” Wilson scratched his head and patted her belly, “Sorry it was daddy’s fault. You’re a good girl. Be good and don’t hurt mommy, ok?”
Siu Wai bursted out her laughs, “It’s good that she likes those sports! Then later, we three in the family can go to play together!”
“Huh? No thanks!” Wilson was frightened by her idea. He was never fond of these freaky activities. The reality was that he would be scared to death.
“Hey, baby.” Siu Wai whispered to her belly, “Mommy promise to bring you to sky-diving when you grow up, ok? It’s a secret between you and me. Shhhh! Don’t tell daddy about it…”
The little one seemed to hear and respond to her mother. Siu Wai felt her kicking again. It was so amazing and Siu Wai giggled to herself.
Wilson turned back to her, “What is that mysterious giggle about?”
“Nothing!” Siu Wai blinked to him. It was a joy that only a mother would understand.
“Today is so busy.” Wilson walked back and forth serving customers, “Too bad both our part-time helpers can’t come to work at the same time! I hope it’s just a coincidence and they are coming back.”
“Who would want to leave?” Siu Wai was not really scolding him, “You pay them so much!”
“It’s hard enough for them to work and study at the same time. I’ve gone through this and I understand how difficult it is.” Wilson smiled calmly, “If I pay them a little more, then they can live with only one part-time job. They can spend more time to study and rest.”
Siu Wai grasped her husband’s hand. She took out a tissue paper and softly wiped the sweat on his face. They smiled at each other with sweetness in their eyes.
Wilson peeked outside the door and saw a group of tourists approaching, “Wow there are more customers coming in! Get prepared!” He waved and greeted them cheerfully, “Welcome to our café!”
