Chapter 29

The next morning, Wilson heard some noise in the tent and woke up. He saw Alex sneaking in suspiciously.

“It’s morning already? What are you doing?” Wilson rubbed his eyes as he felt Alex’s hand in his sleeping bag.

Alex dragged Wilson’s sleeping bag and tried to look inside, “You put your clothes back on…?”

“Shhhhh!” Wilson peeked at Siu Wai who was still in her deep sleep. He lowered his voice, “You almost got me into trouble last night!”

“What do you mean?” Alex wondered, “Did you...use it last night?”

“No I…”

“Oh my god!” Alex almost screamed and Wilson quickly covered up his mouth. He slowly released his hand and Alex continued, “You idiot! Oh poor Siu Wai. It’s about time for me to help thinking of a name for my godson or goddaughter.”

“Gosh, what I mean is, nothing happened last night.” Wilson rolled up his eyes, “We chatted, and I told her bedtime stories.”

“Adult bedtime…stories.” Alex still had dirty thoughts, “You told her, then you two acted it out together.”

“No! Pure bedtime stories, fairy tales etc.” Wilson said.

“Last night was such a good chance, and you wasted it on telling kids stories.” Alex was disappointed, “You are unbelievable.”

“That’s ok. Siu Wai doesn’t want to. And, I’m kind of scared too. I guess it’s not the best time yet.” Wilson mumbled.

“Alright! Forget about it for now. Let’s wake her up now.” Alex suggested.

“Yes, Shirley is waiting long for us.” Wilson noticed Shirley standing outside the tent, breathing in the morning fresh air.

“I’ll go tell her to wait for a little longer. You wake up your girlfriend now. How can she still be sleeping while we’re so noisy?” Alex stood up and walked out. Wilson looked out the tent and saw Alex wrapping his hand over her waist. He softly whispered to Shirley and she sweetly giggled back. Her cheek had a charming natural redness and her eyes seemed glowing. She and Alex look much intimate and sweet comparing to yesterday, Wilson wondered. He can blurrily guess what had happened between them last night..

Wilson crawled over to Siu Wai and slightly tapped her, “Siu Wai, wake up.”

Siu Wai uttered and tried to hide into her sleeping bag to continue with good sleep.

“Come on, it’s morning and we got to leave now.”

“Don’t bug me. I need to sleep.” Siu Wai mumbled and was annoyed. She struggled to get rid of whoever that was bothering her.

“Siu Wai…” He leaned his head forward to her.

“Get lost!” Suddenly, Siu Wai gave a punch out. It went right on Wilson’s nose.

“Do you want to take this CD also? It’s quite good.” Siu Wai asked Wilson as they were looking at her CD collections in her room. They did not feel like going anywhere outside today, so he came over to her place in the afternoon and will stay to have dinner with her parents tonight.

“Sure.” Wilson wanted to borrow some music CDs that Siu Wai had highly recommended. He looked around her room and picked up a photo frame on her bookshelf, “Every time I look at this picture, I want to laugh.” Of course he had seen it many many times. He came to visit very often and Siu Wai had almost shown him every little thing in her house especially her pretty room.

Siu Wai chuckled, “Stop teasing me. I was only two! That was the chubbiest time of me.”

“You were actually really cute.” Wilson smiled and scanned at other pictures sitting on the bookshelf, all witnessing Siu Wai from little to grown-up.

Suddenly, they heard from arguments through the window. They looked out and saw her parents in the backyard, having some conflicts. They rushed downstairs immediately and went out to the backyard to check.

“I don’t see the problem. I can do it.” Mr. Ching took out a ladder from the storage.

“I said no! Why can’t you just listen? You’ll hurt yourself!” Mrs. Ching raised her voice and tried to stop him.

Siu Wai asked, “Daddy and Mommy, what’s wrong?”

“Ask your dad.” Mrs. Ching frowned, “He insists to climb up to the roof to fix those nailing. He hurt his back a couple days ago. If he moves up and down again, he might get hurt badly! I told him to not do it but he won’t listen.”

Obviously Siu Wai had inherited from her father the stubborn temper and would not take advices. Mr. Ching comforted his wife, “My back is doing fine now! Don’t think I’m THAT old. I got to fix those nailing before winter comes or some of the tiles might crack.”

“No!”

“Come on, don’t make a big deal. It’s only the little area above ground-floor den, like 10 feet high. I always work there and it’s no problem. I promise that I won’t go UP THERE to the second-floor’s roof, ok?” Mr. Ching still would not give up.

“Call someone here to do it.” Mrs. Ching would not let go either.

“Pay people to come and pound a few nails? How much are they charging?” Mr. Ching opened his eyes widely, “No way. It’s an easy job and we can do it ourselves.”

“Siu Wai will do it then.” Mrs. Ching turned to her daughter, “Siu Wai, go help your dad.”

“Ok. Let me go and put on my runners. I will slide down the roof with these sandals.” She walked into the house.

Wilson followed her, “Are you really climbing up to do the nailing?”

“Of course.” Siu Wai went to the shoe shelf, “I always help daddy to do these little repairs at the house. Can’t get mommy to climb up there! She’ll roll down like a meatball.”

“Siu Wai, you don’t make that kind of comments about your mom.”

She stuck out her tongue, “Just kidding.” She was actually caring about her mother more than a teasing.

“You guys should get someone to help.”

“Who else will do it? I have no siblings.” Siu Wai chuckled, “Daddy and Mommy should have put more effort into making some more Siu Ming or Siu Keung etc. to help out with housework.”

“It’s dangerous for a girl to work up at the roof.” Wilson was concerned.

Siu Wai complained, “Hey, discrimination here!” Suddenly, she lowered her voice and whispered, “Tell you a secret. I can run on the roof, like they do in TV ancient series. I wear all black and come out at night to steal from the rich and deliver the money to the poor.”

Wilson laughed, “Silly girl!”

They walked back to the yard. Siu Wai picked up the tools, “Now where’s the nailing?” She stepped on the ladder. Wilson stared at her.

“Wait! Siu Wai.” He suddenly called.

“Yup.” She turned her head back.

“You stay here. Uncle, Auntie, I can go up there to do the nailing.” Wilson suggested.

The couple was a bit surprised. Of course they were hoping that Wilson could help out, but was not sure to actually ask. Wilson had been with Siu Wai for three years and his relationship with her parents was developing well, and still the couple felt odd to ask for Wilson’s help unless he offered it himself.

“Are you sure?” Siu Wai wondered.

“No problem.” Wilson smiled. Standing there were two middle-aged, one young girl and one young guy. Who should go up and work at the roof? Besides, Wilson really wanted to help them out.

“Thanks so much then, Wilson.” Mr. and Mrs. Ching said.

Wilson took the tools and went up the ladder. Mr. Ching instructed him for the areas that needed repairs.

“I see the nailing loosen up at that corner…” Mr. Ching pointed.

Wilson held onto the hammer, “Here? Should I pound this nail too...”

Siu Wai looked at the two of them. She was always a clever daughter and knew her parents so well. Unlike her mother who liked Wilson almost right at the beginning, her father kind of felt jealous and this and that about Wilson for these years. Of course he was not against of Wilson, but Siu Wai always felt there was a gap between her father and Wilson. Maybe it just took longer for men to really get along with each other. Siu Wai wondered: it looks quite good now. She was happy about that.
