“As expected. We have to get used the new environment, new people, new language etc. and of course it’ll be difficult.” Wilson felt the same, but he had confidence to overcome.
Alex lay on the bed and stared at the ceiling, bored.
“Why are you suddenly quiet? Missing your little girlfriend in Hong Kong? Did you call her?” Wilson asked while still having his eyes down at his textbook.
“We broke up before I left. I forgot to tell you.” Alex replied casually as if nothing happened.
“Why?” Wilson turned to him.
Alex shrugged his shoulder, “Just don’t feel like being together. Besides, I was leaving for Sydney. Overseas…we wouldn’t keep it for long anyway.” He hummed a pop song, “For my studies, for my ambitious aspiration…we have to put down our love…”
Wilson smiled and shook his head. He had not heard of the song before. His life was always too occupied with studying and working. He had no time for any entertainment which almost every young person of his age would take it for granted.
“Don’t worry. I don’t feel a thing now. I’m only nineteen and there’s lots of opportunity out there!” Alex smiled, fascinating on the new girls he had been seeing on campus during the past few days. He asked Wilson, “Why did you bring that antique all the way from Hong Kong to Australia?” He pointed at a box underneath Wilson’s desk.
“You mean my typewriter? It’s new and I just bought it before I came. Look, it’s electronic…” Wilson tried to show it to Alex.
“Come on, we’ve just stepped into the 1990s now. We have to try new tech. I want to get a computer.” Alex planned.
“Computer?” Wilson opened his eyes widely.
“What’s wrong with that? I have a computer at home too.” Alex said coldly.
“But it’s very expensive. I don’t know about your Civic Engineering faculty but for us in Business, we only need to type out reports etc and a typewriter will do.” Wilson certainly had not thought of getting such a luxury thing, “Besides, if we really need it for our homework, we can always use the computer lab at school. You don’t need to buy one.”
“Maybe.” Alex had obviously not considered any issues of money and usefulness. He only wanted to buy a computer because he wanted a computer.
Wilson sighed but did not say anything. Their extreme backgrounds often made them unable to communicate in the same language.
"I will sleep here tonight. Tomorrow is Saturday and we’ve no class. We can chat till late at night.” Alex suggested.
“Huh?” Wilson was planning of studying and not chatting until late tonight.
Alex mumbled a few other things and began to quiet down. Wilson turned around and found Alex’s eyes closed and he was lying still on the bed. Wilson grabbed the quilt from his bed and softly covered it on Alex. He turned off the room light, leaving only the desk lamp on. Watching Alex sleeping soundly, Wilson smiled. Wilson had no sibling and ever since he made good friends with Alex, he always treated Alex like his younger brother.
He went back to his desk for his studying. The room was very quite and calm. Wilson concentrated on reading the book and did not realize time passing by. After a while, he picked up his can of pop drink and had a sip.
“Wilson, are you gay?”
Wilson choked by the sudden sound from behind and also the question itself.
“Alex I thought you were sleeping! And what did you say?” Wilson spun his chair.
“I doubt if you are interested in girls at all. Ever since I know you, I never hear you saying that you like a girl or something.” Alex turned his body sideway towards Wilson, and wrapped himself inside the quilt with only his head sticking out.
“No kidding. You know I have no time for those things…” Wilson chuckled at Alex’s unexpected question on him.
“All you know is study study study and work work work.” Alex said, “You’ll soon become a monk.”
Wilson had no comment on that.
“Guess what? I found out who did it to you that day.” Alex suddenly changed topic. He must be dozing and was about to fall asleep again.
“What are you talking about?” Wilson was confused.
“Orientation Day…the girl who poured water on you….we haven’t seen her around after that day.” Alex lowered his voice.
The image of that girl popped up in Wilson’s head. At the same time, he had a blurry feeling inside of him. He felt odd but did not understand why.
“I found out from Mike…” Alex yawned.
“Who’s Mike?” Wilson asked.
“Lily’s friend.” Alex closed his eyes to one narrow line.
“And who’s Lily?” Wilson asked again.
“Gosh you don’t know anybody here at our residence. You are quarantined…” Alex murmured.
Wilson did not understand what Alex was telling him, “Now what are you trying to say? Please do it in one complete sentence.”
“That girl doesn’t live here at our residence but her friend Pauline does and that day the girl came over with Pauline to join the torturing games because she’s naughty and likes to make fun of people.” Alex answered in one shot and fell right into his dreams.

Wilson was busy flipping through the reference book at the library. The book was very useful but it could not be borrowed to outside. For the past few days, he was unable to find it on the shelf, possibly used by someone else every time. Therefore, today since he had the luck to find it, he had to make good use of the time and tried to read as much as he could.
“Hey?” A girl’s voice rose and a head stuck towards Wilson. He tilted his head and looked. The girl’s face was so close and it scared him a little.
It was her.
“It’s really you! I recognize you…the guy in slow motion and got all wet.” The girl whispered. She was still wearing t-shirt and jeans today.
Wilson gave her a polite but cold smile in return. Then he returned to his reading. After a short while, he slightly rolled his eyes and peeked. She was still there gazing at him.
“…Why are you still here? Why are you watching me like this?” He felt uneasy.
The girl spoke in Chinese with a little local accent, “You must be first-year student too…since you were in the newbies game? What faculty are you in? Are you from Hong Kong?” Curiosity showed in her eyes.
Wilson went back to his book and did not look at her, “Sorry this is the library and I need to read quietly. You are disturbing me.”
The girl curled her lips. She mumbled to herself as she walked away, “Why being so cool? Weird guy…”
