“Yo.” Alex greeted. He peeked into Wilson’s room and saw his roommate reading quietly at his desk. Alex whispered, “Better not disturb him. Let’s go to my room.”
“Ok.” Wilson stepped out from his room and gently closed the door. “It’s getting late at night. Is your roommate sleeping already?” They took the elevator up to the fourth floor.
Alex shrugged his shoulder, “He moved out today. He told our residence office that he can’t continue to live in the same room with me.”
Wilson opened his eyes widely, “What did you do to him? Did you climb over to his bed in the middle of the night?!”
“You go to hell!” Alex laughed and hit Wilson’s arm, “He complained that I’ve got too much stuffs and there’s no space left for him.”
“But a while ago when I visited your room, it wasn’t that bad…yet.” Wilson was curious.
Alex opened his door, “You come in and have a look yourself.”
Wilson walked in and yelled, “Oh my god! Look how packed your room is! It’s just full of your stuffs! There’s a computer, stereo, mini TV, a LD player, new book shelves, all these snacks, junk everywhere, piles of clothes that overflowed your closet…” He searched through the mess, “And what is this? A mini fridge?!”
“I know I’ve got a lot of stuffs, but I can’t help it. Everything seems useful. I kept buying and buying and they end up stacking up in my room.” Alex swiped his clothes off a chair to the floor, “Have a seat, Wilson.”
“No wonder your roommate asked for a different room. I’m glad that I didn’t apply to share a room with you at the first place.” Wilson shook his head, “Even though you have a lot of things, you can at least organize them more and clean up your room! Do you do your laundry at all? Man, you should have brought your maid along with you to Australia.” Wilson opened the mini fridge to get a drink but horribly found a sock inside. He threw it out, “Yuck!”
“If no one is moving in, I don’t care. I will pay for the other half of the rent and occupy the entire room.” Alex leaned on his bed, “Come on Wilson. Stop throwing my things around. Just let them sit there as is.” He suggested, “Or how about if you stay here one day and clean it all up for me?”
“Pay me.” Wilson sat down, “Then I’ll clean your room for you.”
“I’m just joking! Michelle promised to come over and do some clean up for me. I just have to find a way to get her in here. Maybe she’ll go in the girls’ side of our dorm first, and then she can sneak over.” Alex lowered his voice, “If our keeper sees a girl in my room, I’m toasted.”
“Yes, get your girlfriend to clean up this landfill for you.” Wilson agreed. Just as he was talking about girls, the face of Siu Wai popped up in his head again. He bewildered.
Alex waved in front of his face, “Wilson, are you ok? What are you thinking?”
Wilson hesitated, “Alex, I want to you ask you a question. Hm…the girl we met at Orientation party…she…hm…we met this afternoon.”
“So? What about it?” Alex asked casually.
“Siu Wai…her name is Siu Wai. She…hm…and I…hm…” Wilson faltered.
“Wait… you look suspicious.” Alex approached him with excitement, “Did something happen?”
“Nothing! How should I say it? I don’t know.” Wilson was confused.
Alex looked at Wilson, “You like her, huh?”
Wilson looked down to his feet and frowned. He was not sure if what he was feeling now was so-called affection, but he had been thinking about her and was keen to see her again.
“There’s nothing wrong with that.” Alex said, “Go woo her.”
“But Alex, you know about my background, and what I’m facing with now.” Wilson sounded concerned, “I don’t want to begin and pursue with any…relationship. I’m afraid and I don’t have any confidence.”
“I’ve said it numerous times, Wilson.” Alex turned serious, “Don’t let your background and your past to become your barrier. You have confidence to chase for your dream and study aboard despite of any hardships, why can’t you have the courage to get together with a girl? And besides, it’s not like you have to marry her right now. Just making friend…how difficult and complicated could that be?”
Wilson thought deeply.
“You punch your calculator everyday to count your money.” Alex smiled, “But don’t even try to do that for you and the girl. You won’t get an answer. You can’t count anything out of it.” He tapped his shoulder, “Just go with your heart. I’ll always support you.”

Wilson and Siu Wai finished lunch together at the student building’s cafeteria, and decided to have a walk. They ambled to the quite side of the campus. Wilson put both his hands at his pockets, and left a little gap between him and Siu Wai, as usual.
“Leaves have fallen off and scattered all over the campus. The trees are almost bared now.” Siu Wai began the conversation.
“Weather is turning chilly these days. Is it going to be winter soon?” Wilson asked.
“Now is only the end of May. Weather will be cooler during winter, around July and August.” Siu Wai said softly.
“I see.” Wilson muttered. Then the two of them became quiet again. They had been meeting each other on campus for lunches and studying together, and went out for several times. But every time Siu Wai was the proactive one, doing all the talking and making all the suggestions. Wilson never spoke much. Siu Wai felt he always had a lot of things stuck in his heart.
They walked under a big tree. Siu Wai halted her steps and gently leaned her back on the trunk. Wilson did the same by her side.
“Wilson, why are you always so quiet? You always look anxious and uneasy.” Siu Wai finally asked this answer which had stuck in her mind for a while.
“I’m ok.” Wilson replied uncaringly. He tried to change topic, “…Your little scooter is very nice. It’s quite comfortable too.”
“Of course! It's new. My dad got it for me as a gift to my admission to university. I’d been begging him for so long, and finally mommy convinced him.” Siu Wai smiled proudly, “I am their only daughter and they love me.”
Wilson smiled, “How nice.”
Siu Wai asked unintentionally, “Your daddy loves you too, does he?”
He hesitated but decided he should not hide it from her, “My dad passed away long time ago. I have very little memory of him.”
“Oh I’m sorry.” Siu Was apologized, “How about your mom? She must be sad to have lost your dad. And you’re now in Australia to study. She’ll be very lonely by herself in Hong Kong. She misses you a lot.”
“My mom had also passed away already. She left when I was fifteen.” Wilson dropped his head.
