“Hm.” Siu Wai mumbled as she was brushing her teeth. She closed her eyes and mechanically moved her tooth brush.
Wilson turned around. Then she heard some watery sound.
“Ahhhh!” Siu Wai screamed with bubbles in the mouth, “When I am brushing my teeth, you don’t come in and pee behind me!”
“Siu Wai I really need to go.” Wilson cannot help it.
“You’re disgusting! Finish quick and go away!” Siu Wai paced him, “Shhhh…”
“Wait…wait…I ain’t done yet…still dripping…” Wilson rushed and pulled up his pyjamas pants. He scrambled out to the living room and curled his lips, “What a sassy girl…”
Suddenly Siu Wai called roughly from the bathroom, “Wilson Fong, come back and flush your toilet! I ain’t doing it for you! And have you washed your hands yet?”
Wilson ran back in as commanded.

“We haven’t had tea together for a long time.” Siu Wai looked across the table.
Ron put down his coffee and smiled, “Yes. Ever since I changed to another team, I have fewer chances to work with you. My team mostly deals with movie companies. Currently I am working on a project with the filming of a new movie. I will be going to Europe soon to assist with the productions.”
“Wow.” Siu Wai was amazed, “So you have lots of chances to meet movie stars?”
“Work is work. I treat everyone the same, no matter if they are famous celebrities or normal people on the street.” Ron chuckled, “But if you want, I can get autographs for you!”
“Thanks.” Siu Wai appreciated it. It was also a pleasure to chat with Ron. This was why when they bumped into each other on the street, Siu Wai invited Ron for tea at a coffee shop nearby.
Ron looked out the windows of the coffee shop. The sky was dark and gloomy today. Recently, weather was not very stable and had been cloudy and rainy all the times.
Siu Wai picked up her cup and had a sip of coffee. Ron noticed the ring on her middle finger, “I heard you and Wilson are engaged.”
“Yes, a couple months ago. We didn’t have any party…just a family dinner.” Siu Wai smiled sweetly and touched her ring.
Ron asked softly, “So when is the wedding?”
“Not so soon. Wilson and I decided to engage first. We will get married a few years later.” Siu Wai said.
“Congrats. I really feel happy for you, that you can find your beloved one.” Ron said graciously, “I can see Wilson really loves you. Though I’ve lost, I still wish you two from my heart.”
“Thanks Ron.” Siu Wai nodded, but did not how to react to the last line of his words. Frankly, throughout these years, she knew Ron liked her, but she always doubt on his sincerity. Even Ron himself admitted to Siu Wai after offering to her, that he still had other dates. In her mind, Ron was a playboy who would not settle down.
“No matter what, I hope we are friends forever.” Ron asked.
“Of course we are friends forever.” Siu Wai never denied that. She enjoyed having a friend like Ron, an ordinary friend, “We have phone numbers of each other. We will for sure keep in touch.”
“Promise!” Ron pointed at far, “Sorry Siu Wai, my girlfriend is here already. We are going for a dinner. I have to go now. I still have to go home and get changed. It’s my first time meeting her parents.”
Siu Wai was surprised, “You…are meeting her parents?” Doing that indicated a serious relationship, and Siu Wai did not believe Ron would ever pursue it.
“Can’t imagine me doing that?” Ron giggled, “Frankly, even though we only met and dated for only 3 months, our relationship progress very quickly. This is very unusual comparing to my past girlfriends. This time, I don’t mind seeing her parents, because I am serious. I am willing to offer a commitment. She is still young…only 21 years old and studying in college. But we both feel that we’ve found the right person. We understand how each other think and feel, as if we’ve met for a long time. We are planning to get married next year after she graduates.” A sweet smile glowed on his face.
Siu Wai was absolutely stunned. She and Ron looked across the coffee shop and saw a young girl with short hair and in t-shirt and jeans, standing by the door. She was rolling her eyes to scan around while fiddling with her fingers. As the girl found them looking at her, she showed a big sweet smile and waved at Ron happily.
“Is she pretty?” Ron smiled.
“She…” Siu Wai could not keep her eyes off the girl.
The girl ran over and hugged Ron’s face. She greeted Siu Wai, “Hi.” She was warm and friendly.
“My girlfriend Ella.” Ron introduced, “This is Siu Wai.”
“Ron said you’re his good friend from school!” Ella titled her head with an innocent expression.
“Yes we are.” Siu Wai faltered.
“We have to go now.” Ron took out his wallet.
“Let me treat you.” Siu Wai offered.
“Thanks then. Talk to you later.” Ron stood up and held his girlfriend’s hand. They said goodbye and left. Ron tapped Ella’s nose tip while she giggled and bounced up and down to complain.
Siu Wai was left behind in the coffee shop, feeling amazed. The girl looked familiar…because she looked like Siu Wai…a 20 year-old Siu Wai! Her appearance, her expressions…it was so similar to how Siu Wai was like when she was 20, when Ron first met her in class. Siu Wai peeked out the windows, and she saw Ron slightly turning back and stole a tender smile towards the coffee shop. It was quick, but Siu Wai caught it. Siu Wai did not know what that meant. Why did Ron find a girlfriend so similar to Siu Wai herself? Was it because he simply liked girls of that type, or…he loved Siu Wai so much with a true heart, that he had to find a replacement of her?
*********************************************
“Why so quiet?” Wilson asked Siu Wai caringly.
“…hm…nothing.” Siu Wai decided not to tell Wilson about her meeting Ron and his girlfriend yesterday. It was not anything important anyway.
“But you look mysterious.” Wilson asked again.
Siu Wai blinked, “Girl’s secret.” After thinking over it last night, Siu Wai convinced herself to believe the second reason: Ron really loved Siu Wai. She would rather think that way, and enjoyed this blissful feeling of once being admired. At least many years from now, she could still remember this charm when she was young. This is how girls cheat themselves, Siu Wai thought.
Wilson smiled and let go of her. The other people began to arrive at the restaurant.
“Big boss Alex…can we swap? I work day and night and look how worn out I am…” Mike pointed at his puffy eyes.
“I am jealous with Keith and Pauline! They can still enjoy the nice sunshine in Sydney, while we are stuck in the concrete forest in Hong Kong.” Alex chuckled.
Keith and Pauline both laughed, “Hey we still need to go to work everyday! It’s not like we can sit at the beach, doing nothing!” They stayed in Australia after graduation.
“What a coincidence that you two take vacation and come to Hong Kong at the same time.” Wilson wondered, “Keith can show Aussi Pauline around!”
“It’s not a coincidence…hm…” Keith looked at Pauline and slowly picked up her hand, “We are…”
“Whoa!” Their friends were surprised that they were dating suddenly.
“When did it start?” Siu Wai raised her voice, “Pauline you never told me about it! Last time I was on the phone with you but you didn’t mention a word! Alright, what kind of friend are you…” She and Pauline were longtime friends since high school.
“We just began a couple months ago.” Pauline smiled shyly, “I guess it’s all fate. Keith and I know each other since university…with you all. After graduation, we both work in the CBD area and sometimes meet up for lunch or something…just ordinary friends. Then we go out more often…dinner…shopping…movies. Somehow the feeling starts developing…after all these years as friends…suddenly we begin to find that we both like each other.”
Keith just sat there and listened. A sweet smile glowed on his face.
Alex heaved, “Unbelievable.”
“Hey.” Mike had a suggestion, “There’s a long weekend coming up. Why don’t we go on a little trip to cheer for Keith and Pauline, and as belated celebration for Wilson and Siu Wai’s engagement? I’m sure we all need a little break from work!”
“Sure!” They all agreed immediately.
***********************************
“Make a shoulder check. Now your left turn signal…” Alex instructed Wilson.
Wilson had been taking a few driving lessons. This smart guy picked up really quickly and will have his road test soon. This day, Alex lent his car to Wilson and practised with him.
“Wilson, I have an idea.” Alex suddenly said.
“What?” Wilson grabbed tight to the steering wheel and concentrated on his driving.
“When you’re having your road test,” Alex suggested, “I will drive and tailgate you from behind. That way, I can escort you and prevent any stupid car from threatening your driving. For sure you will pass your road test.”
“Please don’t.” Wilson freaked out, because if Alex’s car was at his back, it was actually the biggest threat already.
*********************************
The young people stood at the lobby of the hotel. Alex ran back from the check-in counter and started distributing room keys. They would be staying in Macau in the next three days as a short trip.
“Wilson and Siu Wai, me and Shirley, Keith and Pauline, Mike and his girlfriend Vinci…” Alex counted, “Here is the key for Maggie and Patrick.” Siu Wai’s roommate and her boyfriend came along too. They took the key and thanked.
“And this is for…” Alex forgot the name.
“…Nancy.” Maggie reminded. Nancy was her younger sister. She came with her boyfriend as well.
“Here you go.” Alex handed over the key and gave her a polite smile.
“Thanks Alex.” Nancy nodded and grabbed the key.
All the couples went back to their rooms to settle down. Half hour later, they would gather at the lobby again to go out and play around.
*************************************
After one whole day of playing around, all the people were tired and hot. After dinner, they rushed back to their rooms to take a shower and go to bed.
Alex leaped over to Shirley’s bed and hugged her from behind, “Honey, I…”
Shirley spun around with a white muddy face.
“Whoa!” Alex jumped up.
“I am doing this overnight whitening mask. The sun was strong today.” Shirley mumbled, “Forget about the dirty things in your head. Don’t bug me.”
“Do you think that’s the only thing in my head?” Alex was upset, “I just want to chat serious things with you! You’re my girlfriend but you never bother to listen and understand me!”
“Well my mask is a serious thing too!” Shirley did not want to argue, “You’re weird these days…throwing temper on nothing.”
Alex left the room.
Someone knocked. Siu Wai opened the door, “Alex? Come in. Wilson is taking a shower.”
Alex walked in and sat down quietly on a bed. He watched Siu Wai laying out her neat souvenirs on the other single bed.
Suddenly, Wilson called from the bathroom, “Siu Wai! I forgot my shampoo! Can you bring it in?”
Siu Wai found one from her bagpack and took it to the bathroom. She sneaked in and shut the door. Alex heard their conversation inside.
“This is not the one. Siu Wai, I have my own in my bag. It’s the on-sale one we bought at the supermarket last week.”
“I told you not to use that one! It’s cheap and makes you lose hair! I ain’t staying with a bald guy. Listen, this one is much better for you.”
“At least let me finish that one first. Don’t want to waste it…”
“Use this one!”
“Alright alright…wait…it smells funny…”
“Nice huh? It’s strawberry flavour.”
“Strawberry?! I am a guy and having a strawberry head is a bit…Siu Wai can I not use it?”
“No.”
Alex felt there was no place for him here. He stood up and walked to the door. At this time, Siu Wai came out, “Alex, you want to chat with Wilson? He won’t take long.”
“No…that’s fine. Goodnight.” Alex dropped down his head and left.
Soon Wilson was done. He jumped into his bed, “Whew! Tired!”
“It’s my turn.” Siu Wai took out her towel and clean clothes, “You sleep first.”
“I want a goodnight kiss.” Wilson pulled up his quilt and perked his lips.
Siu Wai smiled and dropped a light kiss on his lips. She gazed at him and softly stroked his hair.
“Hm…so comfortable…” Wilson dozed.
Siu Wai recalled, “By the way, Alex came in, but left. Maybe he was looking for you.”
“It’s getting late at night. I’ll talk to him tomorrow.” Wilson did not want to move.
“But it seems like there’s something wrong with him. He looks unhappy.” Siu Wai tapped Wilson, “You’re his friend! You should care about him.”
“Siu Wai I am really sleepy.” Wilson tried to hide inside the quilt.
Siu Wai frowned.
“Fine, I’ll go check on him now.” Wilson reluctantly got up, “You care so much about Alex and I am jealous.”
“Come on, good boy.” Siu Wai giggled.
“I want something in return.” Wilson leaned over.
“Ok, what do you want?” Siu Wai laughed on his silly look, “Want one of the souvenirs I bought today?”
“You don’t go to bed yet.” Wilson had a mischievous grin, “When I come back, I want…” He whispered some words over her ears.
Siu Wai scrunched her face and kicked him out the door, “I thought you are tired.”
“…some part of my body is active…”
Wilson found Alex sitting by himself at the pub beside the lobby.
“I went to your room and didn’t see you. I guess you must be here.” Wilson sat down beside him, “Shirley complained you threw temper at her.”
Alex sighed and picked up his beer.
Wilson ordered a beer also. They drank quietly together. Wilson noticed Alex was a bit strange. Finally he said, “Sorry Alex. I know last time I had nasty attitude to you because I wasn’t in a good mood. I know recently we haven’t been chitty chatty. Here, I am available to listen.”
There was a two minute silence.
Suddenly Alex opened his mouth, “Wilson I am jealous of you.”
“What?” Wilson chuckled and found it amazing, “What’s so good with me that make you jealous of? You don’t lack anything in life…you have everything.”
“I don’t know how to say it…for example…” Alex thought, “I envy you…that you will go to the supermarket with your girlfriend and shop for shampoo together.”
“What are you talking about?” Wilson was amused, “What’s so special about that?”
Alex bit his lips, “You and Siu Wai are a perfect match. You two are working towards the same goal. You two can share your feelings, and do these little things together. They may be extremely usual everyday life grocery shopping, but it’s actually very…happy and blissful. Frankly, Shirley and I never shopped for household products together, and I know we will never do that.”
“Don’t scare me.” Wilson opened his eyes widely, “You and Shirley have been together for over two years. That’s the longest time in your love history! I thought you two are fairly stable and might end up getting married. You…have slept with her already.”
“What’s wrong with that? We are all mature adults.” The alcohol made Alex relax and speak freely, “In the past, I was little and did not understand. But now, I find it is an essential part of a love relationship. It is normal! You sleep with Siu Wai too.”
“It’s because I have firm plans to marry Siu Wai.” Wilson slapped his chest, “I am a guy, and I take the responsibility. I am her first man, you know.”
“I don’t know if I should call you a conservative, or a real man.” Alex rolled up his eyes, “We can’t predict the future, so treasure the present time is more important. If I am in love with a girl, I will do it with her. We enjoy being together, no matter what will happen next. We can never plan too much ahead of time.”
“You can’t have this attitude, Alex.” Wilson slightly scolded, “You can’t keep flirting and switching girlfriends. You’re a grown-up now and need to consider more.”
“I did try, Wilson.” Alex spoke from his heart, “Maybe you don’t believe it, but in my every past relationship, I was true to each girlfriend. I loved each of them, and I tried to pursue long term commitment to each of them.”
Wilson was surprised.
“I don’t know why none of them works out.” Alex dropped down his head, “At one point, I really thought, and hoped to settle down with Shirley. But now...I begin to realize again…she is not the one.” He and Shirley seemed to come to an end.
Wilson slightly patted Alex’s shoulder to comfort him. Yes, indeed Wilson felt himself to be very lucky to have Siu Wai. That was the only thing he had over Alex.
“In the future, will I ever meet a girl who will give me a feeling that…she is the one?” Alex asked sadly.
“You will. I am sure you will.” Wilson patted his head. He truly hoped this little brother can find his right partner in life that he was yearning for.
Alex perked up and raised his mug of beer, “Wish me luck. Cheers, Wilson Fong.”
Wilson tossed, “Cheers, Alex Yiu.”
