“That’s fine. You don’t need to buy anything specifically for them.” Siu Wai’s eyes glowed as they walked by an ice-cream place, “Hey these ice-creams look really good!” She pulled him inside.
“You sit here. I’ll go get some.” Wilson asked, “What flavour do you want?”
“Hm…I want vanilla…on a waffle cone!” Siu Wai smiled and sat down.
“Sure, I’ll get two vanilla cones.” Wilson turned around.
“Wait…” Siu Wai stopped him, “Go get one cone and we’ll share.”
“Huh?” Wilson was surprised.
“Look at them!” Siu Wai whispered and pointed at a couple sitting next to them who were sharing one ice-cream cone together, “How sweet…we should try that too! I have one bite and you have another bite then I have one bite…”
“Hygiene problem…that’s kind of disgusting.” Wilson said monotonously.
Siu Wai frowned, “You don’t want to share with me. You said I’m disgusting.”
“No I didn’t mean that!” Wilson explained nervously, “Fine, I’ll go get one cone then.”
“Wow, yummy!” Siu Wai smiled, “I’ll eat first.” She snapped a big chunk of ice-cream, “Now it’s your turn!”
Wilson stared at the ice-cream, “Are you sure?”
“What do you think?” Siu Wai reached it to his mouth.
He reluctantly nibbled on it.
Siu Wai was happy and had another big bite.
After a while, Siu Wai seemed to lose her excitement and interest, “It’s not as fun and sweet as I thought.”
“Thank God.” Wilson whispered in his mind that Siu Wai was giving up on this game.
“I’m full.” Siu Wai leaned back.
“Let’s throw this away then.” Wilson stood up.
“I said I don’t want to eat, but you have to finish it.” Siu Wai dragged him down.
“What?!” Wilson opened his eyes widely and looked at this half-melted ice-cream cone which both of them had licked on.
“You always tell me not to waste food.” Siu Wai said.
“But this time is an exception…” Wilson faltered.
Siu Wai curled her lips. Wilson had no choice but to hold his breath and gobble the whole thing down.

Wilson walked along the corridor and saw Alex talking on the public phone. Alex waved at Wilson and continued with his conversation, “…Dad…I know I know…but it’s really more convenient to have a car. Yes…buses and trains get me around…I understand…but with a car I can go out at night to play, no, I mean I can go out to the main library in city center to study till later at night…please…still no? But dad…”
Wilson smiled and shook his head for his spoiled rich friend.

Siu Wai arranged Wilson and her family to have dim sum together at Chinatown. Early morning, Wilson went to the restaurant to get a table and be prepared. He drank his tea while wondering on what he should say later in front of her family.
Wilson peeked to the door and saw Siu Wai walking in with both her arms looped around a middle-aged couple. She found him and waved. He stood up as they approached the table.
“Hey.” Siu Wai greeted Wilson and turned to her parents, “Daddy, Mommy, this is Wilson.”
Wilson addressed them politely, “Uncle, Auntie.”
The couple showed a kind smile and nodded, “Nice to meet you, Wilson.”
“Daddy, Mommy, have a seat.” Siu Wai settled down her parents and sat down beside Wilson. Clever Siu Wai sneaked her hand underneath the table and slightly pulled Wilson’s sleeve.
He got the hint and picked up the tea pot immediately, “Uncle, Auntie, please have some tea.” He poured tea into their cups.
“Thanks.” Siu Wai’s mother, Mrs. Ching, nodded to him.
“Wilson, go get some dim sum for us.” Siu Wai ordered. Wilson did as instructed.
While Wilson was gone, Siu Wai whispered to her parents, “What do you two think about him?”
“It’s too soon to say.” Mr. Ching said.
After a while, Wilson came back with a hand full of food. He placed them on the table. “Uncle, Auntie, I wasn’t sure what you two would like to eat. I got a bit of everything.” He moved a dish in front of Siu Wai, “Here’s your favourite shrimp dumpling.”
They started eating. Siu Wai smiled happily and picked up a dumpling.
“Yuck. Why’s there parsley inside?” Siu Wai frowned and threw the food down in her bowl.
“Siu Wai.” Mr. Ching reminded his spoiled daughter of proper manner, especially in front of an outsider.
Mrs. Ching was about to take the dumpling from her bowl and finished it for her as usual. At this time, Wilson said to Siu Wai, “Eat it and don’t waste food. It’s not something bad or poisonous that you can’t put in your mouth. Food is food.”
Siu Wai whined, “I hate parsley. It’s gross.”
Wilson comforted her, “I’ve said it many times. You’re a grown-up and can’t pick out only the stuffs you like to eat. That’s very impolite.”
“Fine!” To her parents’ very surprise, Siu Wai curled her lips and picked up the dumpling. She pinned her nose and gulped it down.
The couple were amazed and thought it was a miracle.
The meal was taken pleasantly. Siu Wai’s parents had heard from their daughter about the background of Wilson. In the chit-chatting, they did not touch his family and asked him rather casual questions like his school life and hobbies. Wilson replied them politely with short and simple answers. He was not used to speaking too much about himself in front of other people. Frankly, he did not have much to talk about anyway.
Wilson paid for the bill and Siu Wai said to her parents, “I’m going to the beach with Wilson and won’t be back for dinner. Bye!”
“Good-bye Uncle, Auntie.” Wilson said farewell and left with Siu Wai.
On their way home, Mr. and Mrs. Ching commented on this little boyfriend of their daughter.
“That Wilson is ok. What do you think?” Mrs. Ching asked.
“An ordinary guy, maybe he’s just one of the closer friends of Siu Wai. We don’t have to take it that seriously.” Mr. Ching said coldly.
“I don’t think so. It’s different from the other little boys she went out with in the past. Siu Wai seems to be very serious this time. This is the first time she actually wants us to meet the guy. This Wilson is the first guy she ever addresses to us as a boyfriend.” Mrs. Ching thought, “Why? Daddy, you don’t like him?”
Mr. Ching made no comment.
“He’s very mature. I think he can take care of our picky and spoiled daughter.” Mrs. Ching recalled about the parsley dumplings, “Maybe he can even teach her for us.”
“Siu Wai is still little. We can teach her.” Mr. Ching frowned.
“Hey daddy, I know why you aren’t happy!” Mrs. Ching laughed, “You don’t like Siu Wai’s boyfriend because you think he’ll take her away from us! You look like one of those jealous father-in-laws!”
Mr. Ching laughed on how well his wife understood him, “Yes I’m a little unhappy to accept the truth that our only daughter has really grown up. But at the same time I’m glad there’s someone by her side who loves her as much as we do.”
“Wilson is a good guy, but just too quiet and dull.” Mrs. Ching turned to her husband.
“He’s subtle but very smart. You can tell that he knows exactly what he’s doing and his plans for the future. He’s not dull; he’s just extremely cautious on what he says and how he behaves in front of other people.” Mr. Ching read Wilson very carefully at the meal.
Mrs. Ching sighed, “Maybe it’s his background that caused him to be careful and alert. But as long as he’s a good guy and treats Siu Wai well, I wouldn’t concern too much about other things. Let’s wait and see.”
