“Did you get my flowers and gift?” Andrew asked over the phone.
“Yes, they delivered this morning. Thanks for the necklace.” Sabrina said.
“Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. I will call you after the holidays.” He said softly.
Sabrina was praying that Andrew would change his mind and give her a surprise, but she knew it would not happen. The festival was his family time; he will not spend it with Sabrina. Or to say it correctly, he did not need Sabrina.
“I remember it’s your birthday soon after the new year. What do you want to do?” Sabrina asked. Since she had no hope in spending Christmas with Andrew, at least she can look forward to his birthday celebration.
“We can talk about that later.” Andrew was rushing home to get change. He had to attend a party with Kylie. There were several parties lining up for the coming week, with business people and his own friends. His schedule was packed until the new year.
“Hi Andrew.” Kylie greeted him.
“Sorry Kylie. I had to finish all the work. Wow, you’re almost ready to go!” He ran into the bedroom and saw Kylie all prepared for the party. She put on an elegant black evening gown, blemished with a set of pink pearl jewellery. She had an up-do on the hair and the make-up glowed on her beautiful face.
“No rush. We still have time.” She smiled.
Andrew gazed at her beauty, “Kylie you’re so lovely.” He softly hugged her face.
“Thanks.” She smiled sweetly and handed him the black suit set, “Here you go.”
“Thanks. Give me 30 minutes.” He ran into the bathroom.
Kylie was waiting for Andrew while checking in front of the mirror for final touch up. Suddenly, her cell phone rang. She saw the called ID and felt surprised. She walked out the bedroom and lowered her voice, “Hello…Wallace?”
“Hi Kylie.” Wallace said softly, “Am I disturbing you?”
“No that’s fine. What’s up?” She said casually.
“I bought a Christmas gift for you. I am at your door now. Are you ok to come out for a moment?” He said.
She was peeped to the bedroom and Andrew was still in the ensuite bathroom, “Hm…ok, I’ll come out now.”
When Wallace saw Kylie coming out, his eyes glowed, “You’re so pretty today!”
“Thanks.” Kylie smiled softly, “Andrew and I are going to a Christmas party tonight.”
“Oh.” Wallace steadily handed her a little wrapped gift, “Merry Christmas.”
“Thank you, Wallace.” Kylie waved it.
“Hm, why don’t you open it and see if you like it?” Wallace wanted to find a reason to make her stay for longer, even for a just a few more minutes.
“…then…ok.” Kylie opened it and found a pretty music box, “It’s very nice.” She smiled and liked it very much.
Wallace was glad.
“Hi?” Andrew’s voice suddenly sounded from behind.
Kylie turned around and saw Andrew looking at her, and then peeking at Wallace with curiousity. “Oh, Andrew. Let me introduce…this is Wallace.” She turned to Wallace, “Wallace, this is my husband Andrew.”
“Hi.” Andrew reached out his hand to Wallace.
“Nice to meet you, Mr. Ho.” Wallace was stunned with Andrew’s sudden appearance. Intuitively, he felt Andrew had disturbed his warm chat with Kylie. But at the same time, Wallace was embarrased on his fascination on Kylie deep inside his heart, and felt odd to meet Andrew.
“Have I seen you…somewhere before?” Andrew wondered. He found Wallace familiar.
“Maybe, Mr. Ho. I work at James Young & Co. You might have seen me at the law firm, or when I drop off documents at your office.” Wallace said.
“Oh? You work for James?” This law firm had been handling all the legal matters for Vooki since Mr. Paul Ho’s times, long before Andrew took over the business.
“Yes.” Wallace turned to Kylie, “And I am enrolled in the PCLL review class beginnig the new year. I am hoping to make it for the exam later in the year.”
“Good for you, Wallace! I’m sure you can do it this time!” Kylie felt happy for him.
Andrew sensed the close friendship between Kylie and Wallace. He felt uncomfortable with way Wallace looked at Kylie. He paced, “Excuse me, Wallace. Kylie and I are in a rush to the party.”
Wallace had no more excuse to stay for longer, “I’d better go now. Hm, Merry Christmas to you…two.”
“Merry Christmas.” The couple walked back into the house. Wallace sighed and left.
“You’ve known him for a long time?” Andrew asked as they climbed up the stairs.
“A few months.” Kylie played with the gift with her fingers.
“What is it?” Andrew looked at it.
“A music box. It’s a Christmas gift from Wallace.” Kylie showed it to Andrew.
“Cute.” Andrew praised, “You can put it on your piano.”
“Andrew, what do you think about…me getting a gift from another guy?” Kylie asked softly.
Please say you are jealous!
Andrew shrugged his shoulder, “Christmas gift is just a courtesy thing. It’s normal.”
Kylie bit her lips.
“Anything wrong?” Andrew stuck his head over.
“Nothing.” She whispered.
Andrew looked into the mirror to fix his hair. He spoke in casual tone, “But by the way, next time if you’re meeting Wallace, can you let me know first? I’d love to join.”
Kylie lit a soft sweet smile on her face. She was guessing on what was in Andrew’s head.
That night, Andrew and Kylie had a fun and warm time together at the party.
Sabrina went to a disco and mingled with a bunch of so-called friends, dancing, drinking, smoking, laughing, screaming, until dawn arrived.
Wallace stayed home, had a light dinner, took care of his plants, read a book…just like a regular quiet night, alone by himself throughout the Eve.
**************************************
Andrew’s mother, Mrs. Belinda Ho, used to tease all the times that if Andrew were to ‘run faster’ insider her tummy, he would have rushed to come out and become a new year baby, and that Mrs. Ho could make herself famous and seen on TV as having the first newborn of the year.
Today was the third of January, also the birthday of Andrew. It was still the New Year holiday long weekend. His younger sister Linda, who was busy travelling in Japan during her Christmas holiday off school in Canada, paced back home to Hong Kong to celebrate the new year with her family, as well as her brother Andrew’s birthday. Their eldest brother Kevin had moved out after getting married. This day, Kevin, his wife Nadia, and their young son Jacky were also going back to the mansion later in the day for the family gathering.
It had been a long time since the family had such warm re-union. Everything was actually arranged by Kylie. She hoped to give Andrew a special birthday, and took the chance to fill the gap with his parents and siblings, which he had been longing for.
Early morning, Kylie began to set up for today’s party. She was busy at the kitchen with the servants. Andrew went to his study and shut the door. He dialled his cell phone, “Still in bed?” Usually this time of the day, she would still be sleeping deadly.
“No, I got up early today.” Sabrina said softly, “Hm, happy birthday, Andrew.”
“Thanks.” He appreciated it.
Sabrina sounded anticipating, “Are we going out tonight? What would you like to eat? Just tell me what time…”
“Actually,” He interrupted, “I want to tell you that we’re having a family thing at home today. My siblings are all coming over. I can’t just sneak away. They’re holding a birthday party for me.”
“You promised to have the celebration with me.” Sabrina was disappointed, “Are you still coming over? I’ve got stuffs prepared for you.”
Andrew’s heart softened with her pity voice. He still wanted to see her, “I’m coming later in the day, probably in the evening.”
Sabrina smiled and hung up the phone. She paced to get started.

“Woohoo! Go! Go! Jump!” Linda was excited and shook the remote of at the video game.
Little Jacky stared at the TV with his fingers fiddling at his remote. He srunched his face, “You’re too slow! I don’t want to play with you anymore.”
“No I can do it! Look!” Linda begged, “Stay.”
“What’s up, you two little kids?” Andrew heard the argument and walked over.
“Nothing.” Linda rolled her eyes and shook her head, “We’re having fun.”
“Auntie Linda is dumb.” Jacky said.
All the adults heard the comment and laughed. Linda whined.
Andrew poked Linda’s forehead, “If I were your future patient, I wouldn’t want to see such a dentist.”
“You wait and see! I’m graduating next year!” Linda raised her head proudly.
Jacky threw down the remote and ran to the dining room to join his parents, “Mommy, anything to eat?” His eyes stayed at the dishes of snacks on the table.
“Try these cheese balls. Auntie Kylie made them.” Jacky’s mother, Nadia, offered.
“Wow. They’re good!” Jacky munched and nodded happily.
“So what do you say?” His father, Kevin, asked.
Jacky turned to Kylie, who was setting up some other dishes with a maid. “Thank you, Auntie Kylie.”
“You’re welcome! Thanks for being my testing guinny pigs. This is the first time I’m making them.” Kylie smiled.
Jacky saw Linda approaching, and passed a cheeseball to her. Linda turned away and pretended to be still angry with his comment. Jacky got a bit scared and whispered, “Have one, Linda.” He lifted his feet and sweetly put a cheeseball to her mouth.
Linda happily snapped it and tapped his head. He tapped her head (but not tall enough) too. They became good friends again. How childish.
Andrew showed a thumb-up to Kylie and her cheeks turned red. She was so cute!
“Andrew is lucky that he can enjoy such delicious food all the times.” Kevin smiled and peeped at his wife.
Nadia was embarrased, “I feel guilty. I can’t even fry an egg.”
“Nadia you’re a successful career woman.” Kylie praised her sister-in-law, who was a PR manager at a five-star hotel, “Unlike me. I’m just an ordinary teacher…don’t have much achivements. I just have more spare time on doing these cooking and housework trivial things.” Kylie was humble.
“I can tell. Andrew’s starting to have a belly.” Kevin teased.
Little Jacky poked his finger on his uncle’s belly to feel it. Andrew shrunk and bursted out a giggle with the itchiness.
“Andrew you’re scared of being tickled?” Kylie chuckled and asked.
