Chapter 2

“…Wallace?” Sabrina softly called him.

“…oh yes.” Wallace woke up and asked, ““Sabrina, are you thirsty?” Want water? Juice? I’ll go get some.”

Sabrina nodded, “…water please. Thanks.”

“Be back soon.” Wallace walked away to the little café.

Sabrina watched the buds of the vegetables. They were growing. And inside Sabrina’s heart, something was also growing. She knew it.

She tried to suppress this feeling.

“Here you go.” Wallace came back with two bottles of water. He handed her one, “Got to drink more water. Even though the weather is cool, it’s easy to dehydrate under the sun.”

“Thanks.” She had a sip.

They sat down side-by-side on the ground and had a rest.

“It’s nice to have two people working at the farm together.” Wallace looked at the growing plants and tittered casually, “We can help each other out and chat. It’s a lot quicker and more fun to buddy up. Hm, I just realize it.”

“Wallace, thank you for making friends with me.” Sabrina bit her lips.

Wallace looked at her.

“You…really don’t need to purposely spend time with me. I mean…if you are busy, you’ve got some other stuffs to do…you don’t have to stay with me.” Sabrina whispered, “I’m ok.”

“You mean I’ve been bugging you. You’re asking me to leave you alone.” Wallace slightly frowned.

“No…” Sabrina panicked. She did not want Wallace to mistaken it. She did not want to lose such a great friend. But… “Wallace, I didn’t mean that.”

“Alright, maybe I’m such an annoying person. You don’t want to be friend with me.” He said dully.

“Please don’t say that, Wallace! I…” Sabrina did not know what to do.

Wallace suddenly bursted out a chuckle.

Sabrina sighed and giggled back. Wallace was only faking; he was not mad.

“I understand, Sabrina. I understand what you are thinking.” Wallace said, “You think I purposely come to visit you all the times, because I’m afraid that you are bored, you are lonely, you need accompany.”

Sabrina dropped down her head. Indeed. She did not want to anyone to pity her.

“Sabrina, how about this way? I am the one who’s bored and needs accompany. You are spending time with me as my buddy.” Wallace said graciously. Even though he was saying so to comfort Sabrina, his words were somewhat true.

“Wallace, I…” Sabrina was touched.

“Come on. Sun is going down!” Wallace cheered her, “Let’s hurry up and finish the fertilizing! Otherwise, I will bring over some human organic fertilizers…”

“What are human organic fertilizers?” Sabrina wondered.

Wallace laughed mysteriously but did not answer her.

“Tell me…”

Two months later

Inside the baby room, Wallace was holding and cuddling Anson.

Anson sat on Wallace’s lap. He leaned over and opened his little mouth.

“You sure eat a lot.” Wallace tittered and fed him with another scoop of baby food.

Anson munched with his two teeth and played with the duckie stuffed toy in his hands.

“Hm.” Wallace sighed and looked up to the ceiling, “Anson, do you know? Uncle Wallace has been sleepless lately.”

Anson shook the duckie.

“…how should I say it?” Wallace continued, “Every night when I close my eyes, I…start thinking about…her. In the last few days, even when I am working in the office, some little things can make me think of her.”

Anson reached over for more baby food.

“It’s fate. Something might not seem possible. But when it happens, it happens.” Wallace did not realize Anson’s struggles and kept talking, “What should I do now?”

Anson obviously only cared about his yummy. Seeing that Uncle Wallace had no reaction, he flicked his legs and dipped his tiny finger inside the jar.

Wallace looked confused.

Anson looked confused too. He licked and patted his dirty hand on Wallace’s face.

“Tell me, baby. Should I go with my heart?” Wallace finally remembered about Anson’s food and scooped some into his mouth.

Anson was happy and concentrated on his toy again.

At the door

“Is Wallace ok?” Kylie peeked inside the baby room, “What’s he mumbling on?”

“Yeah…something wrong with him. He is heart-to-heart talking with a 9-month old.” Andrew stuck his head over and whispered.

Wallace and Sabrina walked side-by-side along the beach.

Sabrina sneezed.

“It’s cold today.” Wallace immediately took off his jacket and put it on Sabrina.

“…thanks.” Even such small caring act touched Sabrina. She tried to shake away her thoughts.

He softly wrapped the jacket around her.

“But the fresh air is very nice.” Sabrina said.

“You should come out more often. Even a short walk is good for your health.” Wallace smiled and gazed at her.

She tipped down her head and shivered. She was still a bit cold.

Wallace softly grasped her hand, “Hope…you will feel warmer this way.”

She did not resist, but still had her head down.

At least she did not swing his hand away. Wallace was happy on the first move.

They continued to stroll along the beach.

Wallace’s hand was soft and warm, giving a very comfortable and secured feeling to Sabrina. At this moment, she wished he could hold her hand like this forever.

She did not say a word though.

“Why don’t we sit over there? It’s less windy.” Wallace pointed at a bench.

She nodded.

Wallace gazed at Sabrina. He tenderly caressed her face and hair.

Sabrina uttered softly and soaked into his touch.

“Sabrina.” Wallace suggested, “Why don’t you move out of the convent? Let’s find you a place close to my home. I can take care of you.”

“Wallace, I…” His words were heart-rendering, but she hesitated.

“Hm?” He smiled sweetly.

She looked into his eyes. Her finger tips reached over and stroked his face.

Wallace whispered, “Sabrina, can I hold you?”

Sabrina softly leaned on him.

He wrapped his arms around her.

Sabrina listened to the calm heartbeat of Wallace. The feeling is so pure and natural, Sabrina thought. Wallace hugs her, only because, he simply wants to hug her. No other intention; no other motive.

Wallace squeezed her tighter.

She sighed and closed her eyes. Suddenly, she felt very, very tired. She wanted to rest. She wanted to settle down. She wanted to…stay in this comfortable hug forever…maybe…maybe not…

She felt his soft moisture lips approaching her. He pecked and nibbled lightly…her ear lope, her nose, her chin, and to her lips.
