Chapter 9

Their smiles frozed.

Sabrina was anxious, but feeling that Wallace’s hand tightly grabbed on hers, she took a deep breath and nodded to the guests in the room.

All the chatting and laughter turned into deadly silence. The atmosphere became uneasily tensed.

Mr. and Mrs. Ku obviously heard about Sabrina and her mess with Andrew. Even though Kylie hardly said anything about her in front of them, they had seen pictures and news from pulp magazines. This was their first time seeing Sabrina in person. It was too surprising and shocked; instantly they could not even figure out what was happening.

Andrew’s face turned red then green then pale. He was absolutely stunned to see Sabrina once again. It was totally out of his expectation to see her. More, it was totally out of his expectation that she was with Wallace!

Sabrina is now…Wallace’s girlfriend???!!!

Kylie just stood like a statute and stared at Sabrina.

“…what’s…what’s going on here?” Mr. Ku broke the ice.

Wallace looked at them, “This is Sabrina, my girlfriend.”

Mrs. Ku almost fainted at the spot.

“…how…why…??!!” Andrew faltered and peeked at Kylie, who had no expression on her face. He panicked and worried on what Kylie was thinking at this moment.

Wallace expected such reactions from them. He was prepared, “Sabrina, this is Mr. and Mrs. Ku…Louisa’s parents. They always take care of me.” He tried to ease up the tension in the air.

“Mr. Ku, Mrs. Ku.” Sabrina greeted politely.

The couple looked at each other and did not know how to respond.

Wallace and Sabrina turned to Andrew. “Hi Andrew. Long time no see. How are you doing?” Sabrina smiled softly. Before she came in, her mind dangled on what would happen when she saw Andrew again. But now, her mind was relieved. She no longer felt anything; no more love, and no more pain. Yes, because someone else had fully occupied her heart now.

“…hi…wow…surprise…a very big…surprise…”” Andrew sweated. He wanted to slap himself to see if it was a dream or not. He still could not believe it. Sabrina had changed a lot. She used to have long, curly luring hairstyle, wore very heavy makeup and exaggerated brand names fashion. Now, in front of Andrew was a young girl with simple short hairstyle, wearing a very casual wool blouse and jeans.

Sabrina looked at Kylie and said graciously, “Mrs. Ho.”

Kylie looked away and did not say a word.

“Hey Sabrina.” Wallace gave a casual chuckle, “You haven’t met this little one before. This is Anson.”

“So cute.” Sabrina smiled and bent down, “Hi Anson.”

Anson sat on the chair and looked at her with curiosity.

Sabrina tried to shake his little hand. Kylie instantly pulled Anson back, as if he was attacked by a violent bacteria.

Anson did not know what was happening. He was happy to see Uncle Wallace and reached out to him. Kylie carried Anson up and tightly hugged him. It was obvious that she was keeping his son away from Sabrina, and anyone who had anything to do with her, even including Wallace.

Wallace felt bad.

“…let’s get the server and start dinner.” Mr. and Mrs. Ku took the first move.

“Yes. Everyone must be hungry! Let’s start dinner!” Wallace thankfully looked at his ex in-laws.

They settled down at the dinner table. Wallace sat down on Sabrina’s right. Mrs. Ku purposely took the seat on Sabrina’s left. This seemed to be the best arrangement.

“Sabrina, see what you want to eat.” Wallace handed her the menu.

“Anything is fine.” She smiled sweetly.

The people at the table just watched them.

The dinner went by smoothly, but quietly. The gentle Ku’s couple casually chatted with Sabrina to ease up the atmosphere as much as possible. Wallace was set apart with his sweetheart Anson. Across the table, once in a while Wallace gestured and made faces at Anson. Anson was enjoying his private dinner box of porridge and fruits. He giggled back at Uncle Wallace and showed him his yummy food.

Andrew squeezed out some tense and ugly smiles, while keeping his eyes on and off his wife. Kylie was absolutely wordless during the meal. She only dropped down her head to eat and took care of Anson on the side.

The server placed a bowl of dessert red bean soup on the table.

Mr. and Mrs. Ku helped to serve. Wallace thought it was now the right time, “Tonight, I have one important thing to announce.”

Sabrina grasped Wallace’s hand.

“Sabrina and I are getting married next month.” Wallace said.

Mr. and Mrs. Ku dropped their spoons. It was too much for them to take tonight; hopefully they would not get a heart attack.

Andrew’s mouth turned into an ‘o’ shape.

“..hm…congrats.” The only response the Ku’s couple could have, “…have you told your ma and pa?”

“..yes…wow…wow…” Andrew followed, “Congrats.”

“Thank you.” Wallace and Sabrina said together.

Kylie always had the best manner and would not throw temper in front of so many people. However, the colour on her face turned more horrible. She stood up, “Excuse me. I need to go to the washroom.” She left the room.

Andrew did not stop her. She had held on for too long and probably craved for a break.

Kylie splashed some water on her face and felt a little cool down. She took a deep breath and turned off the tap. She grabbed a paper towel and slowly wiped her face. She stared at herself in the mirror.

The reflection showed another girl walking in.

“Mrs. Ho.” Sabrina called softly.

Kylie turned around and wanted to walk away.

“Mrs. Ho.” Sabrina stopped her, “I know you don’t want to see me. I have done a lot of wrongs in the past. You must hate me to death.”

Kylie finally stood still and looked at her.

“But I must say this to you tonight. It’s struck in my mind for a long time.” Sabrina said sincerely, “I am sorry. I am very sorry.”

Kylie did not answer.

“Please accept my apology. It’s from my heart.” Sabrina dropped down her head.

“There’s only the two of us in here! Stop acting in front me!” Kylie abruptly raised her hand and slapped heavily on Sabrina’s face.

Sabrina was shocked by this sudden act, though she somewhat expected it. She put her palm over her burning cheek and kept her head down. She deserved it.

“Why are you popping out again? Can’t you just disappear and leave us alone?!” Kylie blew up and yelled.

Sabrina felt guilty and did not dare to look up at Kylie.

“Your plan on Andrew failed! What are you doing to Wallace now? What are you trying to get from him? You wicked evil woman! Wallace is naïve enough to trust you! But I know your cheap tricks!” Kylie scolded fiercely.

“No…I really love Wallace. I really do!” This was the only thing Sabrina could not be mistaken. She grabbed Kylie’s arms.

Kylie swung her away, “Your lies don’t work on me! You’re dragging onto Wallace as your life saver! When you find your other targets you’ll dump him! No you don’t love him at all! You don’t even know what love is about! For God’s sake, let go of innocent Wallace and don’t hurt him!”

Sabrina was speechless but did not argue back. She knew no matter how she explained herself, Kylie would not believe it.

“I don’t want to see you when I go back outside.” Kylie walked into a stall and slammed shut the door.

Sabrina silently walked away.

“Hey?” Wallace realized Sabrina looked odd when she returned to the room, “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.” Sabrina squeezed out a bitter smile.

“Why is your face red and bumpy?” Wallace noticed it and touched her cheek.

She shook her head.

“I’ve paid the bill already.” Wallace of course was treating the dinner, “Andrew will drive mom and dad home…”

“Why are you still hanging around?!” Kylie’s voice scolded from behind.

It shocked everyone.

Sabrina bit her lips.

“Kylie, what’s happening?” Wallace was stunned. He held Sabrina’s shoulder.

“Good for you! You do look a lot like a soft little lamb! No wonder Wallace believes in you!” Kylie pointed at Sabrina’s nose, “Come on, whine to Wallace! You must be good at that! Why don’t you tell him? What don’t tell him I hit you?”

“What?! Kylie you hit Sabrina?” Wallace jumped up.

“Kylie!” Andrew panicked and tried to grasp his wife.

“I never hit someone in my life! You are the first one!” Kylie glared at Sabrina.

A tear rolled down on Sabrina’s face.

The Ku’s couple ran over to hold onto Kylie. They had never seen such fierceness in Kylie’s eyes. But they understood, because they knew how deeply Kylie was hurt by Sabrina. It seemed to be over, but now seeing Sabrina showing up in front of her, and to the worst sticking with Wallace, it once again lit up the fire in Kylie’s heart.

Kylie was not a saint; she ultimately needed to vent out her anger. She was agitated and turned to Wallace, “She’s just fooling you! She just flirts on men! Don’t trust her!”

Sabrina trembled in Wallace’s hug. He was furious, “Kylie! Do you know what you’re talking about?! Stop insulting Sabrina! She…”

“No…Wallace…” Sabrina stopped Wallace. No one else needed to know about her past and true feelings in her heart. No one else, except Wallace.

“Let’s go home first!” Andrew raised his voice and tried to drag Kylie away.

“Whoa! Whoa!” Anson’s crying broke the fight.

“…Anson…” The little one caught all the attention. Everyone immediately checked up on him.

“Whoa! Whoa!” Anson was frightened by the adults’ argument. Even though he was so young, he could feel the battle going on. It made him very uncomfortable.

“Come to mommy…” Kylie carried up Anson and cuddled him softly.

“Kylie…” The Ku’s couple patted her caringly.

Tears formed in Kylie’s eyes. Her voice trembled but remained her last courtesy, “…Godmother and Godfather…sorry…I can’t accompany you home tonight. I’ll call you a couple days later. Take care.” She grabbed her handbag and Anson’s nursery bag, and rushed out the room with her son tightly in her hug.

“Wallace, please take Godmother and Godfather home.” Andrew quickly followed behind Kylie. Before he paced out the door, he turned around and gave a glance at Sabrina.

“Nanny, please take Anson to bath.” Kylie put Anson in nanny’s arms and walked upstairs.

“Kylie.” Andrew tailgated into their bedroom.

Kylie did not say a word. She grasped her pyjamas and went into the bathroom.

Andrew sighed and followed her in.

“I’m very tired. I don’t want to talk.” Kylie slid off her clothes and walked into the shower. The hot water splashed on her head and seemed to wash away her clumsy thoughts, at least for this short moment.

Andrew watched his wife through the steam. He was the one who caused the trouble at the first place. He did not know what else to say. He just wanted to stay by her side now.
