Chapter 9

Uncomfortable

I had always admired my Father. The way he was respected by his employees & how he handled any & every situation with ease & care made me aspire to be like him when I grew up. But lying in my bed at 2am thinking about my Mother who collapsed in my arms, I felt angry, fooled & betrayed. Angry because he managed to live a third life separate from Work & Home , fooled because I thought I knew my own father and betrayed because of the fact he walked out on his family for one person.
Eventually my thoughts led me to drift off in to a deep sleep.

Yunho woke up to his cell phone ringing. Squinting his eyes he ferreted around his bed for the device. “Hello?”
“Yo Hyung! where are you? we’re at the beach waiting for you” It was Jiyong.
“Why are you waiting for me? it’s too early man. I thought we were gonna play at 1 this afternoon.”
He heard Jiyong snigger over the phone “Dude it’s almost half 1 already now get rid of the chick in your bed and bring your ass here man, there’s plenty of good meat down here as well I’ll hook you up”
“Sorry I’m busy. I can’t come down man, I’ll catch you tomorrow or something. I got some stuff I need to sort out”
“Aww that’s too bad, I was looking forward to kicking your ass in volley as well.” Jiyong laughed
“As if you could eat-ass” I replied jokingly.
As soon as I hung up the thoughts I fell asleep to had returned. I got out of bed and went to check on my Mother. I slipped in to her room which was empty. Wandering downstairs I found her cooking in the main Kitchen. I watched her pull a tray out of the oven, something I normally wouldn’t bother doing. She caught me staring and smiled faintly. “Good afternoon you”
“Hey Mum” I said kissing her cheek “What’s all this for?” I asked pointing at the food spread out on the dinning table
“Your Sister is coming over with the children, we’re going to have a late lunch”
“Mum does Hyori… know?.. about Dad I mean” She smiled again. I wished she’d stop smiling like everything was normal.
“No she doesn’t honey.. but I’m going to tell her when she gets here..I didn’t want to tell her over the phone” she said while tossing a salad. “Oh, okay so when are they coming?” I asked
“She should be here any minute.” she paused and faced me “Yunho when she arrives I want you to take the twins upstairs so I can tell her & Jihoon, okay?” I picked a cherry tomato out of the bowl and ate it.
“Arasso Omma” I opened the fridge and grabbed an Up n Go. I leaned on the bench & watched her set the plates and cutlery. “Mum tell me the truth when I ask you this.. how are you feeling?” She stopped and faced me again.
“I don’t really want to answer your question Son.. but I guess the right words for how I’m feeling now are… heart broken”

Hyori and the family arrived in the next 5 minutes. Yunho opened the door and planted a kiss on his elder sisters cheek “Heyo Sis, Hey Hyung” Hyori smiled and ushered her twin sons through the door “Hey bro. Where’s Mum?”
“She’s in the Front dinning room” I replied. I looked at my 4 year old nephews Jaein & Jaeha who were fiddling with the hallway plant “Hey monkeys’ wassup?”
Jihoon my brother in law came through the door last “Hey Bro” he said shaking my hand before heading after his wife.
The twins looked up at me “Uncle we’re not monkeys! we’re beans!” said Jaein the younger twin who was just an inch shorter than Jaeha. Jaeha agreed “Yeah Uncle don’t you know that? we’re human beans” he said proudly.
I grinned at them “I think you mean Human Beings you doofuses”
Jaein frowned “No uncle! Janghoon from my kindy says it’s human beans!”
I rolled my eyes and grabbed each of their hands. “Yeah well you can tell your friend Janghoon on Monday that he’s full of beans and that your Uncle Yunho said so. Now come on let’s go play spyro upstairs in uncles room”
Jaeha & Jaeins’ faces beamed “Spyro? yay!!!!!!!!!!!”
“Kids” I muttered under my breath.

After 20 minutes of Spyro, Yunho led the boys downstairs to eat. Upon entering Yunho caught on to the tense atmosphere. Hyori sat quietly with a stern look. Jihoon watched her expression and rubbed her back gently. It was obvious his mother had been crying; her eyes were now red and a little swollen. The twins ran and greeted their Grandmother “Halmoni anyounghaseyo!!” they shouted in unison. She smiled and covered them in hugs & kisses.

While they chatted away I pulled out a chair & sat next to my Sister. “Noona are you okay?” I asked. She faced me & frowned. “No I’m not Yunho.. How could he do this to Mum..to us..to his grandchildren?” she said angrily “Never in my life have I been so disappointed in someone” she said rubbing her temples. Jihoon ran his fingers through his hair.
“Honey just stop thinking about it & eat. You can confront your Father when he comes to get his stuff, but for now the one that’s hurting most is your Mum & I don’t think she wants you to say anything when the boys are in here”
She paused and thought “You’re right honey.. I just can’t make her unhappier than she already is”.
I was surprised at how well balanced my Sister & her Husband were. They were always straight up & understanding of each other, which was probably the reason they were so compatible.

I barely touched my plate when I got up in the middle of lunch. I stretched & pushed my chair in.
“Where are you going Yunho?”
“I’m going for a drive, I’m not really hungry” I said dumping my full plate of food on the countertop “I’ll see you later Ma”
I turned to my Sister “Noona I’ll see you whenever okay?” She replied with a nod.
“Sure thing Bro.. take care on the roads. We probably won’t be here when you get back”
“Always do Sis. Catch you later Hyungnim, bye monkeys” The twins looked up from their plates
“Bye Uncle Yunho!”

The weather was fine; not too sunny & not to dim. Perfect for cruising. Yunho started the engine of his Ford GTP and pulled out on to the main road. Finger drumming on the steering wheel he thought about where he could go. He wanted to be alone.
“I need to think” he murmmured to himself. Whenever he needed to sit down & think about something serious he would always grab a coffee and sink into non-exsistance in a corner booth at starbucks. Too bad he couldn’t do that when that annoying girl works there. “Pfft who cares if she works there?.. what the hell am I so worried about?” Yunho realised he had spoken to himself twice in 2 minutes. Shit.. I need a good coffee.
Starbucks it is.
