Prologue – The price of indiscretion
By: enchanted1312

He’s here.

Even if Yoochun couldn’t see him, his instinct could easily tell him what he needed to know. After what appeared to be six hours of waiting in vain, his sixth sense finally kicked in like an animal sniffing for its prey (he tried not to lean too much on his instincts or emotions but some circumstance just called for it).

The club that he had set up an undercover operation in was bustling with its usual noise and people. It was hidden in the red light district, away from prying eyes and was an ideal place to exchange or make illegal transactions in its dim surroundings. And that was just the outside parameter of the club itself, he silently noted. Upon arrival, save for a few disco balls hanging proudly on the ceiling, everything else appeared pretty eluded.

No wonder the tip-off said that they would be here. It’s the perfect place for something as dark as themselves.

He touched his gun, safely tucked away between his stomach and abdomen, patiently hiding in the shadows as he waited for any obvious signal.

His eyes were like a leopard, searching for its food as they scanned the crowd.

Something just wasn’t right.

It hit him later than usual and he frowned. His partner shifted uncomfortably beside him as he touched his gun for the second time that night. Nothing was ever good once he touched his gun for more than once in a minute, well, that was what he had told the others who confided in him (this one assumption was based on real-life experience).

“Get ready, close in on my say.” He whispered to his mini-microphone hidden in the inner lining of his collar.

“Copy that, sir!” The three other sub leaders replied immediately.

Then it came. The first shot rang through the club, vibrating onto the walls within seconds. Screams, shouts and red. And he couldn’t help but felt nostalgic. Technology and such, scientist thought of ways to try to make Earth a better place to live in by inventing all these gadgets but to him, it was just the catalyst to an end. How could humans, as selfish as they could get, be entrusted with the power that could change the way the world goes? It just sounded so crazy and unpractical.

And this was the result when these kinds of privileges were misused.

“Go, go, go!” He shouted as he moved like a wild cat, unbuckling his gun from its holster.

He scanned his target, his only target since he had been promoted to the highest rank possible for a Korean like him in an English country, as chaos revolved around him. He wasn’t distracted, not at all, as he forced his body through the panic crowd.

“Target at sight.” The microphone replied and that’s when he saw the person he had been waiting for all along.

The target was just like him, moving anxiously through the crowd, probably trying to exit the club. But it was hard, especially when the crowd was as crazy as this and moving. And it wasn’t working because the target only ended up being pushed closer towards him. His sense became two times sharper now when he was just two meters away from him. He could see his target now; felt him so near that he could vaguely imagine his hands around the other man’s neck.

A shot was all it took. A damn shot.

“OFFICER DOWN, I REPEAT, OFFICER DOWN!” The microphone screamed and he cursed as he turned around, distracted.

It proved to be the biggest mistake for the night because the next moment when he turned back around, he was gone. He cursed from hell to heaven and back again. Not wanting to believe that the six hours had harboured no fruit, he scanned the crowd once again, his eyes darting around furiously just to come dead-end with the same result.

His target had escaped once again.

“We need an ambulance, I repeat, we need an ambulance. An officer is down!" He muttered angrily into his main walking-talkie, hearing the officer on the other line confirming that one was on its way.

The club was empty now. Tables and chairs were overturned; pieces of bottles and glasses were all over the floor. It was a big mess, one that he wouldn’t like to be in after such failure. “Sir, the target escaped.” Changmin, his right-hand officer, said as he stood beside him, assessing the damage their failed operation had cost them.

“I know that." He gritted softly. "Clean up this mess. I want a report on my desk by the next morning on why the target escaped when we both decided that the plan was as perfect as hell.” He whispered, his voice dangerously low.

“Sir-” Changmin stopped him when he was about to walk away. “You said you wanted to meet the new member after this operation.”

“Did he read the red file?” He raised his eyebrows. The red file consisted of every possible rules and guidelines for someone to be on his team, one file that he had put up painstakingly and prove to be a helping guide for someone new.

“Sir, yes sir!” Changmin confirmed.

“Then he should fare well.” He concluded. “How’s his performance tonight?”

There was a moment of hesitation, an action that he didn’t take very well. “He’s the one that shot one of our officers down.”

His eyes flickered upon hearing the information. “Tell me, Mr. Shim, is our new member blind?”

“No sir!”

He nodded his head. “Then I guess we are one member short from tomorrow onwards, aren’t we?”

“But sir, once a police officer gets out of your team, it’s almost impossible for him or her to join other forces.” Changmin tried to retort.

“Almost is not the same as impossible which means, there’s still hope. Besides, he takes the risk when he enters this team, didn’t he?” He replied with much sarcasm. “Only elites stay in my team, Mr. Shim and an elite do not shoot their own member no matter how big or small their mistake is!”

“But-t…”

“I know you are my best friend but when it comes to work, I’m your leader and you are my subordinate.” He replied coldly. “I prefer my subordinate to follow my orders instead of trying to change them.”

But just when Changmin was about to intervene (it’s a good thing that they were best friends indeed), a man interrupted their conversation. “It’s my mistake. I was distracted.”

The leader of the undercover operation turned around, towards the direction of the voice as he observed the new face. “You are the one who shoots one of my people down. Congratulations, you are the first in my team to ever do that and do me a favour, will you? Don’t tell anyone that it’s me who brings you into my team.” He leaned forward, mockingly whispered to the calm face. “Or they would think that I’m a retarded leader too. I still want my job, you know.” He winked.

“It’s my mistake, sir!” The man stood straight but still, there was this aura of coolness around him.

“No need to be formal, the mission is over. Thanks to you, we are all able to go home early tonight.” He replied snidely, ignoring the confession.

"I beg to differ. The reason to why this mission is over is not only because of me but you play a part in it too, sir." Jaejoong said calmly. “You are distracted too. You are the only one that could get close enough to the target but when I shouted that an officer is down, you turned.”

He took a step forward. “And who are you to say that to me? You are nothing but an officer. I have nothing to prove or say to you. Now if the both of you could excuse me-”

“The reason to why I was distracted-” Jaejoong shouted, not wanting to give up at all. “-was because the target is my brother!”

That one sentence threw him off-guard as he slowly turned around. He walked towards Officer Jaejoong and he admired the other man for not backing away. A fearless soldier is always welcomed by him.

“Repeat.” He muttered dangerously.

“That man, the one you have been trying to catch is my brother.” JaeJoong replied coldly.

“And did you shoot your partner down just to make a distraction?” He questioned his charge.

“I’m a cop.” He answered simply and maybe that’s the only main reason to why the leader even bothered to look amused.

“And tell me, Office Kim, knowing all this, how could I even trust you with future operations?”

“I am a cop. He is a criminal.”

The leader nodded, apparently satisfied with the simple yet specific answer. “Report to me tomorrow at eight in the morning.” He replied curtly.

“Did you give me a second chance just because I said that Kim Junsu is my brother?” JaeJoong replied and the leader stopped in his tracks.

“Maybe.” He turned around halfway, smiling as he looked up into the light. "Maybe I did. Maybe the reason to why this conversation is still continuing is because of your persuasiveness to suck up to me. It’s your choice to be there at eight tomorrow, Officer JaeJoong. If you are not there by 8.01, then I take it you are not in my team anymore.” And with that, he turned towards the door once again.

“I’LL BE THERE!” JaeJoong shouted.

“And so he will.” He said softly to himself, mentally thinking of what the future would hold for him and the rest of the team, especially now that the target had known the cops were after him. Fuck fate but he will never dream of backing down. Not now, not later.

And when he exited the club, standing at the doorway, hands in his pockets, he abruptly stopped.

He was watching.

He straightened his back, his face blank. The club was near a night market bustling with people. There was no way he could risk an open fire unless he wants the police commissioner hot on his trail, especially not after tonight’s failure. And he knew the other man wouldn’t risk it too, not when there were too many witnesses and too little cover. It’s just not his style.

It wasn’t the time to catch Kim Junsu just yet.

“I will get you someday, Kim. Be sure that I will.” He whispered into the cold night.

And with a grim face, the Deputy Police Commissioner of the United States, Park Yoochun walked into the busy crowd, blending into the seas of faces as the moon continued to shine its gleam.

On the other side of the road, the figure moved from his spot and into the dark alley with a smile on his lips.

“Park Yoochun.” His lips spoke as darkness swallowed him.
