1993, EnSung High School

The room was silent saved for the noise that the old fan was making above them. On the chalkboard at the front of the classroom were some alphabets written in white; ‘Detention’, undeniably clear from one glance. And today, on 17th September 1993, only two boys were found in the detention room.

They sat opposite of each other, giving sufficient angle view for either one of them to stare at the other.

“Stop trying to act like a hero.” The boy with the brunette hair spoke, breaking whatever considerable silence left in the room. His shirt had some blotches of dirt on it while his school blue tie was long lost during the tussle he had just a few hours ago. The paper pad in front of him was filled with doodles, showing non-sensible things. His name was Furuya Keita, an exchange student from Japan.

“I hate bullies.” The boy opposite him replied simply, eyes still on the book in front of him. The condition of this boy was a definite opposite to Keita. His uniform was still as white as it could be even when he had just escaped from a fight.

Keita snorted upon hearing the response. Was this kid a big joke or what? “And who would love to punch a bunch of them early in the morning with no one around but the victim? One advice, do your heroic acts when there’s actually someone that care about you doing these kinds of rescue missions.”

“You could hit them.” The other boy muttered, unaffected by the sarcastic comment. “I see the way you move when you are avoiding those punches. You could fight but you didn’t. Why?”

Keita was surprised that someone as obnoxious as the boy sitting across him could realize that. His avoidance moves are always so fast that most people didn’t realize that he’s actually dodging any offensive attacks. “I see no use in fighting.”

“But if you don’t fight then how would it stop? It will only happen again and again.”

An audible sigh from Keita. “I fight, I win and then what? Should I rejoice for hitting a few immature high school kids? I don’t use my strength or skill for that kind of violence. It will only make me one of them if I hit back.”

The other boy could only nod his head. “I admire your principles. But don’t you know? Humans are such bizarre creatures and sometimes, violence is the only way to tame them.”

“Then wouldn’t I be considered an animal too if I resort to violence?” Keita attacked back smoothly.

“Not really. Some might see violence as a weapon to carve future humanity.”

“And you are one of them.”

The eyes were cold as he looked at Keita. “It’s easy to be misunderstood.”

“It’s easy to be proven wrong.”

Silence before a smile broke out on the handsome face. “Ahh, then I’ll be waiting for that day to happen. A world where futurists aren’t right and mankind would prove them and everyone else wrong.”

And a mutual connection was formed.

Life was just full of surprises, Junsu thought as he calmly watched his left-hand man walked through the glass doors. What more could he say? Getting betrayed shouldn’t hurt this much. He had regarded Keita as a younger brother, even brought the younger man into his home, mingled with his family members (not that he have many but still, number doesn’t show everything).

Junsu’s gun was on the cocktail table in front of him, glinting in the bright-lit room. If he was to pick it up, aim it at his target and press the trigger, it might just reduce the bitterness he was currently feeling deep inside. But it wouldn’t solve the problem, that he knew. Besides, Kazuya will expect that of him; to lose control and pull the trigger. Since when did Kim Junsu become so predictable? “It’s an interesting revelation. Is there more?”

“Come on, there’s no need to act cool now. You are betrayed by one of your most trusted men.” Kazuya taunted, wanting to see any reaction from the man sitting across him but Junsu remained blank-face. “There’s no need to hide anything.”

Junsu sat in silence for a few minutes, thinking. Only when he realized that the room had gone deathly quiet did he emitted a small chuckle. “The both of you are good actors. So what had happened that day when Keita was raped by you? Was it an act too?” Junsu directed the question to the man standing at the corner of the room.

“You had been gone for the whole three months and I couldn’t trace you anywhere on the map. But then I stumbled across one of Yunho’s receiver and realized that the car you were using had a tracking device on it. You were coming back that night, probably to give me a surprise visit just like you always do. That’s when the both of us decided to stage it.” Keita’s voice was like a serpent wrapping its lean long body around Junsu’s neck, making it harder for the leader of Hazied to breathe.

Kazuya smiled, his face half-hidden in the shadows at the corner of the room. “You know that I have always liked a big dramatic entrance and beating Yoochun into a pulp just wouldn’t do it. So I tagged up with Keita to give you a warm welcome.”

Junsu didn’t stand to punch Kazuya in the face when the other man carelessly mentioned Yoochun’s name. Did the bastard even know how close Yoochun was to death? “What’s the purpose of the rape? I come, I rescued and you left. There’s nothing that you could gain from it.”

“Oh that’s when you are wrong, my friend. When you were busy helping your dear brother, I’m busy intercepting all of Yunho’s emails which led me to a few easy access to some of the forbidden secrets of Hazied. Remember how easily I could enter Yunho’s club? You are too careless Su-ah, too careless to let me be here and do whatever I want.” Kazuya replied menacingly.

“Good job then.” Junsu spoke. “But you see, Hazied has been around for two decades now, more than enough to stand strong after this one little bump. Losing one of my advisors wouldn’t cost me much.” Junsu shrugged his shoulders. “But you on the other hand, a small slip-up could cost you a limb. I would be careful if I were you.”

“I will, don’t you worry about that. And you are quite forgetting that I have spend five years of my life envisioning this very meeting but I have to take my leave now. The main play is about to begin, I wouldn’t want to miss it.” Kazuya replied before standing up to walk towards the door. “Have a nice talk, it’s best to resolve the resentments before either one of you decide to kill each other.” And with that, the door shut close.

And now there were two.

2003, Furuya Apartment 123

Keita knew that the man beside him wasn’t very please with his answer but what else could he say? He couldn’t very well agree with the outrageous idea. Yes, he does have a insight on special weaponries since his father was a former agent of a force called AWF (Automatic Weapon Force) but that doesn’t mean that he would want to enter a team majoring in that idea.

“You know how much I hate cops. Even though you are my best friend, it isn’t a good enough reason for me to enter something that I totally hate.” Keita muttered as he continued wiping the wide selections of guns that he had on the oak desk.

The other man pouted, not satisfied after hearing the excuse from Keita. “You will learn something new if you join. You should have seen the different kinds of weapons that my brother had brought home.”

Keita raised his eyebrows. “How could a police officer brings home special weapons? They could only hold onto their normal semi-automatic guns from what I have known.”

“Semi-automatic? Shouldn’t it be fully-automatic?”

Keita could only shake his head in amusement. “See, you didn’t even know how to distinguish the different types of guns and you want to go around boasting that your brother is a damn cop.” Keita rolled his eyes in irritation. Sometimes he couldn’t help but wonder if the other man was just an idiotic genius. It wasn’t a secret to know that the man across him had a best friend (which was him) that knew everything about weapons and a brother that was in a special team (similar to SWAT) but still knew nothing about guns and such.

Silence as the other man sighed. “Then would you do it for me?”

“Does your brother need me that much? There are loads of people specializing in this other than me. I’m sure they are more than willing to join your brother’s elite team.”

“They are not you.” The other man whispered, looking down to stare at his fingers when his voice cracked a little bit. “This mission is going to be big; I could see it in his eyes. He’s worried about me. That day, I found out that he had taken a life insurance on himself, stating me as the benefactor. It’s like he’s preparing for a war or something.”

“A life insurance? Heck, you could be rich if something did happen to him.”

A smack. “You are so insensitive sometimes. You know, if you are in it, maybe I might worry less.”

“Hmm…” Keita thought as he frowned. “Shouldn’t you worry more since I’m going to be in it too?”

“Maybe.”

“I’ll take that as a compliment.”

“So?”

“Let me think about it first. It’s a huge step for me.”

A nod. “Alright but make it fast. There’s not much time left.”

And never would Keita have thought that his best friend didn’t have that much time to start with.

He didn’t know about it, at least not straight away.

He was too busy taking care of his shops at a few districts that day. Too busy to check the dozens of messages on his voicemails. Only when he was on the way back home did he managed to answer the call from his best friend’s brother.

“Yoohwan slipped into a coma.”

And somehow it chilled everything that made his heart beat as his grip on the steering wheel tightened.

“Are you happy now?” Junsu didn’t waste any time as he directed the question to the man standing by the door.

Keita didn’t show any expression as he met Junsu’s anger with a calm face. “I wish I could. I wish I’m could be a little bit happier at the thought of putting a dent on your protective mask.”

“So it’s worth it then.”

Keita snorted. “More than you would ever know.”

“Which side are you on? Park or Kazuya?”

“Neither.” Keita replied as he paced around the room, his fingers twitching. “Park Yoohwan, remember him? An innocent passer-by that’s caught in between a cross-fire that you once had been involved in? You know, the sad thing is, no matter how many flaws Yoohwan has, he didn’t deserve to be thrown over the balcony. It was unbelievable, how a leader of a strong group could be that low. It’s a good thing that Kazuya was there to record the whole incident or I would never believed that you are just another one of those scum. I wonder why you are always so full of yourself when your pride is in the dump.”

“It’s an incident.”

“And still your oh-so-precious brother is alive while my best friend is the one trying to fight for his life! THAT’S NOT FAIR, YOU SON OF A BITCH!” Keita shouted and within a flash, he pulled out a gun from behind his back. “I waited for this moment, this moment where I could peel every layer that you have. To see the ugly side of you underneath it all.”

Junsu sat in silence despite the obvious threat in front of him. “Shoot me then.”

“Why? You die and that’s it. There’s never really a solution when it comes to guns and violence. Yoohwan would deny it of course but he’s not here. He’s not here because of you.”

“And do you think your best friend would be happy with this? That his best friend has joined the other side and had been going against his brother for so long?”

Keita could only smile. “It’s never about Yoochun or justice or gang or fucking guns. You are the only one who thinks it is. It’s amazing how you could have the nerve to fall in love with the brother of the one you had put in a coma. I would have snickered and tell the whole world if Yoochun didn’t do the same stupid mistake too. Fuck, the both of you are so messed up.”

“Stop it.”

Keita could only smirk when he heard the note of warning in Junsu’s voice. “Why? You don’t like it when I talk ill of your lover?”

“You have done what you come here to do. I prefer you leave here without another word.”

Keita didn’t retort, knew better than to agitate the other man. “I’m leaving.”

“One question though.” Junsu’s voice stopped the other on his tracks. “What about all those crimes that you have committed?”

“Oh don’t you know?” Keita glanced over his shoulder. “All those stuffs that I have been doing so far are illegal. I take absolute care whenever I’m on Hazeid’s business. You don’t know about that, do you? You just took my word for it.”

“Clever.”

“I don’t need your approval on what I have done so far.” Keita hissed. “And yes, even if I did overstep my boundaries, Kazuya is there to help me. After all, he’s the Police Commissioner of the Tokyo Police Headquarters. Now if you would excuse me, I need to go.” And just when he reached the door, he turned around once again. “Why don’t you visit Yunho? I found out that he’s such a surprise.”

And with that, two became one.

Keita’s involvement in Hazied and why he’s on the bad guy’s side were all revealed in this chapter and marked one of the most important revelations in this fiction itself. And to mix and match a few occurrences that have happened in the last chapters just made Keita’s real identity a little bit more solid. ^.^
