Boulevard of longing hopes

Chapter 4 – Boulevard of longing hopes
By: enchanted1312

The sound coming from the droplets of water dripping from the mouth of an old worn tap was deafening in the almost silent room. The curtains were drawn in, giving the room a dim effect except for a few rays of sunlight being able to penetrate through the green cloth.

It hurts when he tried to move, nobody would be able to describe the excruciating pain that he was feeling on the lower part of his body as detailed as he could right now. It was as though something sharp had entered his rosette in and out relentlessly, tearing his body apart without any mercy. He groaned when he tried to move, screamed when he made the first step and fall when he removed his hands from the bed.

Yes, it was one hell of a morning for a certain Park Yoochun.

“Shit.” He cursed as he leaned heavily against one of the tall bedposts, heaving a sigh as a sweat trickled down the side of his forehead.

Physical pain must have clouded his sense because only now did he realize that his hands were free from the chain that kept him grounded yesterday night. That bastard must had let his other hand free before he left. Pushing back the dark thoughts in his head, he began to get dressed, grabbing his articles of clothing that was spread on the dirty floor.

While buttoning up his white shirt, his eyes darted around the room just to stop at the dark crimson stain that was on the bedsheet. He didn’t expect to be surprised, not after what he had been through but the thought of his blood flowing out of his body because of a different reason other than mortal combat appeared too alien to him. And that’s when the bitter sense of revenge crawled up his throat.

“I’ll get you back, you son of a bitch.” He whispered as he walked towards the closed door, his left hand clutching the doorknob while the other pulling out the gun from its holster.

He didn’t expect anyone to be waiting for him. After all, he was sure the delinquent had enough common sense to leave if he didn’t want to witness hell breaking loose. But just as a precaution, it was better to be prepared than not to be. Yesterday’s lesson was too heavy a price for him to learn that all too well.

What he met outside the door brought a sinking feeling in his stomach as it churned. There was nothing heavier than to see the fallen figure lying on patches of old newspaper. “CHANGMIN!” He shouted as he grasped the cold body of his dearest partner and friend.

In the midst of trying to get over the shock of being rapped by the criminal he had been chasing, he had totally forgotten about his partner, the one that had chosen to go with him to the abandoned place to check Jaejoong’s inside information out. He felt his chest tightened as his hands reached for the phone inside his jacket.

It didn’t help that his fingers were trembling as they punched in a familiar hospital number for fallen soldiers.

It was sunny on a Monday’s afternoon. The clouds were whitish blue as birds chirped noisily along the sky lining, flying across the horizon. Inside a hospital’s north ward, silence was met; almost too quiet for one to think that there was anyone residing in it.

The machine beeped softly, too soft to signify the heartbeat of a particular man. The figure lying on the bed didn’t move an inch since he was admitted into the hospital with a large bump on the head and minor concussion. That was four days ago and still, no visible sign that the comatose person was anywhere near consciousness.

The heart of the figure standing by the window was dull, almost black and grey at the thought that the warded man might never see sunlight ever again. The responsibility was on him, he knew, to reinforce his investigations now that he was this close to catching his target but what importance would that be if he couldn’t save his subordinate’s life?

Whispers from the outside was starting to irritate him as his fingers laid on the window sill, tapping on it silently to a hum that he thought of just a few days ago. No, I need to see him now! The door burst open as he could hear the noises bustling outside of this four-wall ward, bringing the outside world in.

Was it just yesterday when he stopped coming home?

“Yoochun.” A voice panted, out of breath.

He didn’t turn around, knew well enough who the owner of the voice was. His eyes were trailing a golden retriever that was running all around the hospital’s garden; its cheery barking filled the afternoon’s air. “Get the hell out.” His voice croaked, a note lower than his usual voice as he licked his chapped lips.

“I’m sorry! I-”

He would give the world if he could just turn back time and refuse the other man’s intelligence on the delinquent’s whereabouts. He would give anything to see the younger man awake and talking rather than lying on the bed, as still as death.

“I don’t want any explanation.” He whispered as he slowly turned around, those orbs contained obvious pain. “I’ll give you three hours to pack your stuffs and get the hell out of my team. You are fired.”

“I DIDN’T KNOW THAT THINGS WOULD TURN OUT THIS WAY!” Kim Jaejoong cried out, obviously stunned by the other man’s sudden statement.

“You don’t know? Heck Jaejoong, you don’t know?” Disbelief traced those orbs as he moved away from the window and towards the other man. “In just one night, you cost me my whole life-” He choked when he looked at the lifeless man lying on the bed. “My right-hand man was in this state, comatose, and you have the nerve to tell me that you don’t know? That’s not a good enough answer for me to explain the situation to my supervisors, my subordinates, my team and Changmin’s parents. You need to go.”

Helplessness evaded Jaejoong’s face as his mouth opened. “This is not happening.”

“It is, Officer Jaejoong because you want to know why?” He waited for the other man to look back at him, to gaze firmly into the other man’s eyes. “Because in my line of work, I can’t afford to make mistakes like this. Every single decision I make could cost someone else’s life, someone’s future. I can’t risk that, not even if it means I could get a dangerous criminal into my jail cell.”

“I don’t mean to.”

“But it happened.” He forced out. And in the end, those words win as Jaejoong’s shoulders slumped forward, looking defeated.

Yes, in the end, this was what mattered. This-

A movement to his left stopped his thoughts. “Hyung-” A soft voice. “Don’t.”

It took Yoochun three full days to ensure that everything was going smoothly and for Changmin’s discharge to be as comfortable as possible. Everything was ready and in an hour, the young man was back in his bedroom with pillows supporting his injured head.

“Wow, this is awkward.” Changmin finally spoke, breaking the unsettled silence that surrounded the room.

Yoochun merely grunted, all the while watching the man standing across him. “I’m not the one who begs not to let Kim go.”

Kim Jaejoong shifted uncomfortably as he looked at Yoochun. He didn’t know how he could get this lucky, to get a second chance after nearly killing two of the deputy commissioner’s team members. “Thank you.”

“Not so soon.” Yoochun muttered. “I did let you stay but I didn’t say that you are still in the team.”

Changmin shook his head, knowing how stubborn the older man could be if he really wanted to. Every one of them knew that Jaejoong was still inside the team, was still one of them. It was supported by the very fact that Kim Jaejoong was right here, in this very room. “To more pressing matters, my surveillance team has informed me that Hazeid are moving out. To be more specific, to another country.” He reached out to open the top left drawer of his bedside table, taking out two folders. “They are moving their base out of United States and to South Korean though we are still unsure of the exact location of the new operation in the said country. Our agents had seen the gang members moving parts of their operation machines into one of their many private jets.” Changmin continued, pulling out a few pieces of paper and giving them to both Yoochun and Jaejoong.

“Can’t we catch them while they are moving?” Jaejoong asked as he looked at a few pictures taken at Incheon Airport. “They might be vulnerable since their operations are divided.”

“That’s what we thought at first but unfortunately, they happen to live up to their name of being a formidable foe. Their securities around their territories, you name it, clubs, alleys, restaurants, stores are a lot tighter. We couldn’t even use the information gathered on tapping into their phone lines, not when they are using codes to interact. They are going all out in this move.” Changmin replied.

Yoochun frowned. “It looks expensive.”

Changmin nodded. “It is and that’s our main advantage. They wouldn’t waste that much money and resources just because they are moving to another country which means they are carrying this out simple and swift. Very swift.”

“What about the leader and his two main sidekicks? Where are they?” Yoochun asked, still flipping through the folder.

“Keita is already on the first plane bound to South Korea. I’m guessing that he would be the one in charge of organizing their new base. And according to my calculations, he would arrive in 3 hours time, enough for us to make a plan on the possibility of ambushing them when they are still within our reach.” Changmin took a glance at the clock hanging on the wall. “We are still trying to figure out what the other two are doing. My take would be Yunho being stationed here till the last moment when everything’s done. He would be one of those people who would be moving out last since he was the one who held the main information for their base right here. He would need more time to close their important and main operations lines before he himself move off to their new base. As for the leader, he’s nowhere to be found.”

“An Asian country?” Yoochun sighed as his mind began to sort out the new information in his head. “What the hell are they thinking? They never work in an Asian country before.” He whispered, more to himself than the others.

Jaejoong finally closed his file as he looked at his leader. “This is one big move. It’s expected of Hazied after being in the Western countries for twenty years. They would never stay long, not when the base could be attacked anytime. It’s not safe, I guessed for them.” Jaejoong commented.

Yoochun didn’t answer just because he knew that the other man’s comment was right. Kim Junsu was no fool, no way was he going to continue his operation when he was this close to being caught. Turning to Changmin, he catch the other man’s attention. “Are you going to get on your feet in a week time?”

“I’m getting myself a bicycle tomorrow.” Changmin winked, telling the other man that he was up and ready to fight.

“Here’s what we are going to do, listen carefully.” Yoochun voiced out, his voice serious. “Changmin, your team and you will be moving out to South Korea by next week. When you are there, you will contact the local Police Commissioner, or whoever that mattered. We have jurisdiction in South Korea, even if we don’t, we are moving in anyway.”

“That might take a few days.” Changmin analyzed.

Yoochun nodded. “I need as much information as you could get on the new base. It would be useful to plan our next step.”

Changmin hesitated. “What if there’s some difficulty? What if some of them refused this new order?”

Yoochun knew what the other meant. Moving to another country, not knowing when or how they could end this case was a big risk, especially for those who had families here but what choice does he has? “We can never do much if we are here and they are there. We need to move on with the enemy, they are already a step ahead of us. We need to do this.”

Jaejoong frowned. “It’s not as easy as you think.”

A sigh as Yoochun turned to the other man. “The stars on the uniform that you are wearing right now, they are beautiful aren’t they? You are given those stars for a reason, Officer Kim, and that is the country believes in you. You represent honour, great honour to the forces of this country. But with it, comes great responsibility. When a single member comes into my team, they are ready to die for this country. A week should be sufficient for them to choose because to choose is one’s way to determine the future. In the end, it’s your choice, to hold on or to let go of those stars on that blue uniform. And if you decide to let go, you are not fit to be in my team. It’s as simple as that.”

“I will tell them tomorrow.” Changmin replied after a moment of silence.

“Good. Your role will be like Keita-” Yoochun said without thinking twice.

“I’m not like him.” Changmin suddenly voiced out.

“Mr. Shim Changmin, I suggest that if you want to continue being my right-hand officer, you would keep your personal feelings aside. You know what the hell I meant and I expect no excuse for that stupid comment you have just made.” Yoochun glared as his subordinate sharply.

“I’m sorry sir.” He replied dutifully.

“Apology accepted. You would be like Keita, having to be the first to move to Korea, getting the first hands-on on how the local police force worked. By the time I reached the country itself, your team should know what our enemy are doing and how far do we have to go to catch Hazeid. Whatever the price, get your team ready.” Yoochun spoke with much clarity before turning to Jaejoong. “Officer Kim, you would be in charge of closing all of our files, moving them out of the States in full confidentially. I expect our weapons to be transported with care as well as our high-tech machineries. Do me a report on a daily basis. A week should be sufficient for you to complete the task.”

Jaejoong nodded. “Then I will be moving to South Korea?”

“No.”

“No?” The two subordinates looked confused at their leader’s statement.

“Officer Kim will have the honour to go undercover.” Yoochun smiled.

“Undercover-r?” Jaejoong spluttered.

“Oh don’t look so surprised Kim, I knew you have completed a few undercover jobs yourself.” He replied. “You will go undercover to check on a few things for me and please dye your hair back to black. Blond would attract too much unwanted attention.” Yoochun shot him a look.

“They would know about Jaejoong, why not send me instead?” Changmin asked.

“Jung Yunho joined Hazied only a year ago, and judging from Junsu’s profile, he wouldn’t tell Yunho all about Jaejoong and his beloved family.” Yoochun explained. “And I don’t need you to get all touchy with him, Kim. I just want you to find out whether it is true they are moving out. If they are building another new base instead of moving into a new base, then you will remain right here. But until you can assure me that, your status on whether you will continue to stay or to move out will remain undecided. So are you ready to take the job?”

“As I ever am.” Jaejoong replied with confidence.

“Well then, meeting adjourned, all the thanks to Changmin.” He stood up.

“Where are you going in the meanwhile?” Jaejoong suddenly shot up the question and Changmin looked up too.

“I’m going to take a visit to Singapore.” He replied shortly.

Changmin smiled. “Give Yoohwan a hug from me.”

“We will meet again in a week. And guys please try not to disappoint me.” He winked as he walked out of the room, his phone already ringing, telling him that an air-ticket to Singapore had already been booked.

It’s going to be a sunny ride.

I changed a lot in this chapter, if that is, you guys still remember what’s the original piece was. But I guessed the change was inevitable and this chapter was a lot more serious and contained much more technical stuff. Separating them is vital. hehe.

Comments are loved.
